Why Zambia?
• One of the highest proportions of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS
• No formalized social protection programs
• Food insecure households hosting orphans are at risk to lose livelihoods
• Children may be forced to utilize negative coping strategies e.g. crime, sex work

How were orphans taken care of before?
• Traditionally orphans in Africa have always been absorbed into the extended family network.
Cause and Effect -
• Growing economic crisis and effects of AIDS has affected the social fiber of family structure of orphans absorption making it an increasing burden for families to take care of surviving children
• By supporting families financially through community based orphan care programs it encourages orphans to be absorbed by grandmothers and relatives.
CBOC’s better than orphanages
• Community based orphan care more advantageous than institutionalized orphanages
• Africa is more geared to an extended family structure
• Holistic approach• Retains cultural heritage and traditions • Keeps families together• Psychologically better
for the children after
suffering the loss
of their parents
