Well, I remember, how many times, I started to whine, when I had to go

to bed. My goodness! Still being as happy as a sand boy, I only got one thing in mind. Stay up, syat up ...! My eyes became already quadrangular because of terrible tiredness, but, I didn't care!

Adults’ life at night must be really mysterious - and, we kids shouldn't be with them any time! Tears, screaming, up to six or seven times getting up, running to the living room, where "they" are still gathering together and enjoy ... !.

Every night - yes, but the most has been the so-called "siesta", actually just another interruption of games and fun. During these times, at my life's second half, I am happy having the chance to take a nap - especially during weekends.

While being still young (!), we actually don't need a bed. The bed is just only useful to cry out our “lovesicknesses” - and later, to share again with a loved one.

And then? Time came; we shared our bed with someone - whole days and nights under the same blanket. Better don't get up any more?

Everything "important" happened in the bed: love-nights, endless telephone calls, full of life and weary of life-books, intimate breakfasts…

Then, the bed suddenly changed. It became a simple floor mattress while getting a massage to cure the terrible back pain. I also remember an extendible couch and all those

stupid ceremonious contraptions such as "futon" or "waterbed"…

And then? Here we are in our special health bed with body friendly mattress and adjustable bed construction. Hey, if I only could lie down earlier...! And then? We are in our luxurious unit, called bed, and we can't fall asleep because all thoughts of the day harass, bother and haunt us! We roll from one side to another and start counting stupid sheep: 898, 899, 900, 901 - sleep NA LANG! Or continue counting…

Sometimes I envy Leonardo da Vinci (Italian painter, scholar and technician, 1452-1519), who only needed 15 minutes sleep (but every four hours!). On the other hand, German physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) needed to sleep 12 full hours daily being able - as he said - to think and probably change the world.

Yes, if we become sick and had to stay in bed, we might start hating it - no wonder! And our death-bed might become one of the wonderful clouds in heaven…

Our attitude regarding our bed changes from time to time, but the bed remains what it is: a bed! A bed in every apartment, in every house, in every hotel room or in every guest room in a house.

Everything, even the world may change, but there will be always a bed, which lures and tempts, waits and threatens. Our bed - a flight and escape castle, a safe and secure place.

If I only would have known this at the age of 5 or 6 or so...!

WORDS AND NOTESDEBBIE CABAGUE

THE BIG LEAP

July 1-6, 2014 | The Cagayan de Oro TIMES 5LifeStyle Views

If you’ve ever peered out over the edge of a cliff, you’ve felt the fear. Choosing must often

requires a leap of faith. The must road raises questions that are scary and big often times, without an easy answer in sight. Now, Elle Luna shares about some fears and what we ought to do with them.

Money, it can be a bridge to the freedom of exploring Musts. And it often doesn’t require much. But it does require determination.

Money can be used to buy you a day, a week, month of time to work on a Must, which may amount to nothing. Or it can be used to buy a sweater, a suit, a car — the value of which is obvious and low risk.

Of course, the best way to make money is to figure out what you love and then give yourself to it.

Because the people who consistently choose must over should find a way to make it work, and, once they take the leap, they find it’s easier to make money doing what they love than they ever imagined.

Time, finding our calling doesn’t mean we need to quit our jobs. And it also doesn’t mean we need to book a one-way ticket to a faraway magical land where there’s no cell service.

As someone who did both of those things, I know that it’s easy to pack a small bag, wave goodbye, and push the eject button for a while. But the

return, the re-entry phase, can be absolutely brutal.

The harder road, trickier, and more sustainable, is to make shifts every day within our existing reality. To integrate, not obliterate.

For Sheryl Sandberg, Lean In was a tiny yet growing piece

of her heart for years until it exploded into the world — all the while she was still running one of the world’s biggest companies and raising two children. Weaving our

Must into our existing reality is about co-designing small opportunities with our teams. It’s about setting aside quiet time to be alone with our thoughts, and then actually following through. It’s about doing one small thing, anything, to honor our personal truth — today. But while money and schedules are the reasons cited most often for not making the leap, the real reason is something deeper and far scarier.

While Must comes from somewhere deep inside of us,

a beautiful truth that calls to us from within, Should comes from somewhere external, a place that’s equally important and powerful. Should comes from the place we call home, the people we love, the world we’ve created—the people, places, and things that define us.

It is here, standing at the cliff’s edge, peering down below, hearing the siren’s call, that we feel the terrifying prospect of abandonment, failure, and humiliation. And this is the exact moment when people decide against taking the leap — to avoid that great unknown, that transformative place where nothing is written, nothing is guaranteed, and everything is possible.

As advised by Elle, I thought of my fears and wrote each down. My worst-case-scenario list.

Line by line I went through each of them and realized that though they are only in my mind, these fears are the biggest hindrance in my must road.

I believe that this is the point where my “big leap of Faith “comes in. God has been with me all throughout my difficulties ever since I understood what hardship is and yet I still remain doubtful if I will be able to handle the rest of this must road.

It is only by His grace that I am able to process this road that I have actually been taking.

Elle’s vision of the white room is her exploration while mine has been my music room, my band, my students. Now it’s time to move forward so that sooner my bigger vision will be on hand.

“And the more I live my lifeThe lesser I questionAll the things I just can’t seeRight in front of my eyesSo I take that leap of faithAnd learn a few lessonsTime showed me thatWhat you give is what you get”

~ Danny Gokey

MATTERS OF THE ART

I have suddenly had this thing for collecting original artworks. They are not

yet the works of the masters that cost a life and a limb but nevertheless

I am starting to acquire works by equally wonderful Mindanao visual artists. They are not just to put colors on my otherwise boring walls but as an investment.

Art in all forms always have a soft spot in my heart and by starting a collection of artworks it gives another sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Each piece that I have now has a back story to tell and a personal connection.

They were made by artist friends whom I have known for years and are of great awe with their artistry and ingenuity.

More than the strokes, the

textures and colors and the emotions the pieces invoke, I am enthralled by the passion, patience and dedication they put into their artwork and I respect them tremendously for that.

Being an artist in the Philippines is indeed not an easy career path to take.

Majority of the populace do not get to understand why artworks have to be pricey when they are just pieces of materials put together, mounted and then framed.

Actually, it is not just the materials that we have to consider but the vision, the emotions and the heat and soul poured in to create exquisite modern day treasures.

Every time we bring an artwork home, we bring with us a portion of the artist.

They have given something

of themselves for us to bring – a pocket of stories behind each canvas, each line and each splatter of colors.

The artworks that I have now are just the beginning of my newfound love for the visual arts.

I used to adore painting and ‘obras’ in exhibits, museums and from personal collections this time around, I am beginning to build my own treasure trove.

I am not yet stopping for I have just begun.

In the years to come, when time, chance and resources permit, I will get hold of a few pieces more and then perhaps

I will take one step further by creating pieces of my own.

This is to satisfy the yearnings of my soul and fill the hunger of my heart for art.

A year and a half ago, we started this local blog with a vision of reaching out to Kagay-anons in Northern Mindanao and around the world, bringing them

together in good news and progress updates. A vision of bridging the gap of Kagay-anons living overseas, making them feel at like they never left home, in ever article we write. A vision of painting a beautiful Cagayan de Oro to the world, so we can bring the world to Cagayan de Oro.

Today, we have reached a new milestone in our dream. Our first million views proves that we are not alone in this dream, that the vision which drives us is met with readers who truly appreciate what we do. Today we have validated that we did the right thing.

To our readers, thank you is not enough. So we promise to tread onwards, to improve and bring more new things for you. We promise to raise Cagayan de Oro’s flag. We promise to bring good news to you, everyday.

also an interesting sight for those who wanted to feel old traditions. There are a lot of fun ways to showcasing these points of interests in CDO and we feel that the I Heart campaign will further reinforce the advocacy and promote Cagayan de Oro as a great tourist destination.

The campaign is initially launched at the Limketkai Center branch, featuring some of the very proud Kagay-anons with the likes of Irene Aserios, Joji Ferrer,

Nicole Abas-Datayan, Chingkee Te, Gil Macaibay III, Maxine Monasterio, Desiree Lim, Jeminah Ferrer, Kyle Jennerman, Nadine Legaspi, Awi Chaves, Francis Velasquez, RB Banaag, among the first batch of proud Kagay-anons. Watch out for the unveiling of these personalities in Centrio Mall this July.

Watch out for the opening of their upcoming branch in Centrio Mall.

Ms CDO Beauties on a Tribute Rafting AdventureEven before the tragic white water

rafting incident that took place couple of weeks back, the annual

candidates' river rafting adventure was already planned way ahead as their adventure appreciation tour.

But it took the organizers- JCI Bai Lawanen, various consultations with the local officials and city tourism council head Dotty Pabayo- who are in unison to say that the event should not be cancelled but preparations should be thought really well.

Ms. CDO Chair Gean T. Cesar and Vice Chair Gigi Go, took the initiative to call the parents of each candidate to

ask for their go signal-surprisingly all said yes as long as safety precautions are in place and strengthened. City Mayor Oscar Moreno on the other hand said, although the candidates have parental consent- he wants to make sure that the rafting outfitters will provide substantial number of river guides to go with the group.

Great White Water Rafting and Kagay Journey talked about the safer route that the candidates will take and assured that additional river guides will come along.

Photographers Kim Zaldivar and Phillip Vallespin with videographer Robert Gunayan from Parasat Cable

TV joined the candidates to capture the thrill and excitement the candidates experienced- braving the sudden rain, strong current and their fears.

Promote CDO President Ralph Paguio expressed that this river rafting event done by candidates- proves that rafting is still the most exciting adventure event in the City but emphasizing on the importance of the community's vigilance in calling for stricter safety measures.

The event was also held in loving memory of Aizza Mae Calipusan Balbin- whose adventurous spirit lives on in the hearts of Kagay-anons.

The candidates of Miss Cagayan de Oro 2014 had a blast last Saturday with Cagayan de Oro’s white water rafting adventure. These ladies couldn’t contain their excitement.

To ensure safety, the ladies went through the briefing. They were so attentive.

Oro these days has its many life-changing considerations that Filinvest Land Inc. chooses to answer with urgency.

The One Oasis CDO, the very first mid-rise condo development of Filinvest in Cagayan de Oro City, is set for an early completion, which means an early delivery date to homeowners to as early as mid-year of 2015.

“Completion and delivery dates are top considerations of Filinvest Land, which sets our project apart from the rest with a 5-year lag time,” notes Ms Ara Solidum, FLI Area General Manager for North Mindanao.

Filinvest brings its expertise in mid-rise residential development to Cagayan de Oro City and while achieving such vision is no mean feat, Filinvest, through its Oasis Communities, is able to provide deserving homeowners quality resort-themed developments. When I was twelve years old, during my school summer break, I enrolled in a basic

chef ’s course. I can remember putting on my double-breasted jacket and toque, memorizing new cooking terms, and listening to the instructions from a fascinating chef who introduced me and other wide-eyed students to the smells and flavours of cooking. Today, the glass doors where I stirred my first minestrone soup open for me again.

This haven is La Vetta. It is an exquisite restaurant and wine bar offering French Mediterranean Cuisine. And the inspiring man in the kitchen is Carsten Radke, La Vetta’s Executive Chef and owner, who now, minus his chef ’s whites, sits down to talk with me about his career and business.

Q: Please share with us some of the important points about your life story.

Chef Carsten: I am born in Berlin; I had my culinary studies in Berlin. I left Berlin very young and then travelled and worked around the world as a chef. And then at 2005, I came to the Philippines where I met my wife, got married and now, we have three children.

Q: Aside from the culinary arts, what are your other interests?

Chef Carsten: When I was young I played soccer a lot, and I went cycling - even professional cycling; mountain biking and a lot of snowboarding during winter. Over fourteen years, I did snowboarding. And then later in the

Philippines I started playing golf because it became too hot for the other sports. Seriously, no soccer anymore, everything became too dangerous and too hot. Golf is acceptable. [laughs]

Q: When you go out to eat, what do you look for in a restaurant?

Chef Carsten: I look really for the quality of the food. It has to have life inside. And I mean it has to have different flavours and aromas and a nice presentation. It has to have correct cooking methods, meaning the chef should know what he’s doing; the meat should be tender and juicy and not over-cooked, for example. When I spend a lot of money I look also look at the ambiance. For example, just recently, we’ve been to Hong Kong and

An Interview with Chef Carsten RadkeSpecialty of the Week:

we ate in this very small ugly place but the food was stunning. You know what I mean? [laughs] No ambiance at all but the food was amazing.

Q: What is your favourite dish to eat and what is your favourite dish to prepare?

Chef Carsten: My favourite dish to eat changes always, Angela. It’s always a phase, I have a phase where I like to eat sweet things for maybe, three weeks. Kind of in small cravings for sweets - so I create dishes in that direction, I eat a little of my own food from that. And then after that, it’s done! We’re all satisfied and after that I start having a craving for pasta dishes or maybe pizza. It depends really, there’s no favourite dishes existing for me because my whole life is about food. So it’s kind of always available in different directions but I always have a certain period of around you can say, two weeks, three weeks where I crave for certain flavours in my dish. And my own food, what I like to eat a lot is a lamb racks.

Q: Out of your restaurant’s menu, what do you recommend always to clients? Why?

Chef Carsten: It depends on what kind of customers we have. Plenty of Filipino guests are very happy with our steaks because they are cooked perfect, and they are very tender and juicy. This is good for foreign guests who are more exposed to different

kinds of international cuisine and Mediterranean food.

Q: What Filipino dish do you think can make it to the international restaurants? Why?

Chef Carsten: Very difficult question, [laughs] I cook for my family at home, I cook for them adobo. Maybe not in a one hundred percent authentic way but I made some minor adjustments regarding Mediterranean food. I believe the adobo dish and maybe the kinilaw has some potential, and you can implant it on an international restaurant.

Q: Any plans for the future? Any message to those who want to pursue a career in food service?

Chef Carsten: It’s a tough business. Days can sometimes become very long, it’s maybe a little difficult to socialize because you are working on holidays like Christmas and New Year but you have to be aware of that before you start your culinary career, which something I think is hard. Because for example, there’s a lot of cooking on TV, like Master Chef and Hell’s Kitchen, and cooking became a big run, very popular, but it just shows the glamour side which is less than one percent. So people are just seeing it from the TV and thinking they want to do it, but the way to get there, it’s a long way, and sometimes it gets very tough and hard.

Q: La Vetta is Italian, and it means

the summit or the peak. What do you think makes La Vetta stand out from other restaurants?

Chef Carsten: The way La Vetta prepares its food, meaning the way everything gets cooked. We have very fresh dishes because we use many different herbs… and things you want prepared gets prepared only in that moment you order. There’s nothing in the food warmer. I think that’s a very big difference from all the other restaurants.

And true to its claim, this fine dining destination at Rosario Strip, Limketkai Center continues to whip up gourmet meals for its clientele. And with an Executive Chef who also trains young visionary soon-to-be-chefs, La Vetta never fails to impress food lovers – I should know, for I stayed a little longer with my family, and enjoyed my favourite from the menu. Scallops with bacon strips, anyone?

Italpinas Euroasian Design and Eco-Development Corporation (ITPI), an Italian-Filipino company

that designs and develops sustainable properties all over the country, has recently celebrated its win at the 2014-2015 Asia Pacific Property Awards in Kuala Lumpur by holding a celebratory dinner at the function hall of Primavera Residences last June 28. Primavera Residences is ITPI’s flagship project in Cagayan de Oro. It is the first eco-friendly condo complex in the city.

The celebration was held to honor ITPI’s stakeholders, as well as the city of Cagayan de Oro for their support.

Primavera Residences’ remarkable design, as well as its energy-saving features, are what helped cinch its Best Mixed-Use Development in the Philippines award at the Asia Pacific Property Awards - an achievement that ITPI partly attributes to their shareholders.

“Our recent achievement does not only recognize our project, but our partners and stakeholders as well. Without their support, we could not have won the award,” said ITPI chief executive officer, Arch. Romolo V. Nati.

Nati recounted the difficulty in starting the project, but noted that it was worth it.

“When we were constructing Primavera Residences, it was a risk, especially considering that ours is the first condominium development in

Cagayan de Oro, but definitely we can say that our risk really paid off,” Nati shared.

Nati explained that they chose to set up Primavera Residences in Cagayan de Oro because of the city’s potential for business growth and natural beauty.

“We think that it’s about time that the real estate market serves areas such as Cagayan de Oro. We chose this city because there’s so much to fall in love with. You have thriving businesses here with some multinational companies setting up shop, but it still retains its clean environment,” he added.

The dinner celebration also honored the city of Cagayan de Oro, most particularly Mayor Oscar Moreno, for supporting the project every step of the way. Mayor Moreno, the guest of honor at the celebratory dinner, commended ITPI for their forward-thinking drive to invest in the city.

“Primavera Residences has made a mark in Cagayan de Oro’s urban landscape. Their recent win has really put our city on the map,” observed Mayor Moreno.

“We are fortunate to have been receiving strong support from the local government, particularly from Mayor Moreno, and all the stakeholders. And we are proud to say that they are our partners and strong allies in our advocacy on the sustainability of the environment,” said ITPI chairman Dr. Jose P. Leviste, Jr.

Dr. Leviste stated that he hopes the

win will not only push ITPI to even greater success, but also help the city they invested in achieve its goals of sustainability and greater economic success.

“We want to share our victory with the people of Cagayan de Oro, because we believe they are an integral part of our success and together we can work hand-in-hand to help make the city an economic hub in Northern Mindanao," Leviste said.

Among those honored at the celebratory dinner were Primavera Residences’ stakeholders including its bank partners, brokers, local government units, and media partners.

Primavera Residences is a twin-tower, ten-story mixed-use development located in the Uptown Cagayan de Oro. It incorporates passive green design features like cantilevered edges that provide shade and minimize the amount of direct sunlight that hits its windows and an inner courtyard that acts as a funnel pushing warm air out through the roof and letting cool air flow naturally. These passive cooling features allow residents of the building to lessen their aircon use, thus resulting in reduced energy consumption.
