Dear Friends in Christ,
Many people wonder about what happens to the loved ones we
have lost in death. Every time we recite the Apostles' Creed, we share
the church's teaching about those who have fallen into the arms of our
loving God. In the Creed we confess that we believe in the
“communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting." These are the amazing promises that
our loving Father makes to all who are baptized into the death and res-
urrection of Jesus Christ. I am always intrigued and comforted by the
confession that we believe in the “Communion of Saints." Especially
since we are celebrating All Saints' Sunday in November, it is im-
portant to be clear about this.
First of all, where are those who have died in faith. Yes, their
bodies and ashes are buried in the ground, or perhaps held in a mauso-
leum, or the ashes scattered in God's good creation. But there is more
to it than that. Jesus, in the gospel of St. John 10:27-28, says this: "My
sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them
eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of
my hand.”
It is clear from this passage the Jesus holds tightly to his chil-
dren even in death. The closest place that we can be to Jesus in this
life is when we receive his body and blood with the bread and wine of
the Holy Communion. It follows then, that the closest we can be to the
baptized dead is in the sharing of the Holy Communion meal. This is
what we call the Communion of Saints. This is where the church mili-
tant, the baptized who are still fighting the good fight of faith on this
earth, and the church triumphant, those who have died in Christ, meet.
As Lutheran Pastor, Brerthold von Schenck wrote in his book The
Presence (c. 1945), “At the altar we have fellowship with our risen
and ascended Lord. But there is also a fellowship with all the mem-
bers of the church. At the altar we join hands not only with the great
saints in heaven, but also with all our loved ones who have passed
within the veil, our faithful departed.”
The altar puts us in touch with the reality of the Communion
of Saints, and can provide a great source of love and joy for those who
are grieving. We must learn to lead one another in our grief to the al-
tar to receive the real presence of our Lord and come as close as we
can to our dear ones. It is true that we will some day meet our loved
ones again in the new heaven and new earth that Jesus will create. The

Nave Renewal Update
We have received bids from two local contractors for our Nave Re-
newal project. Gray Builders and Zartman have both provided bids.
Both have come in higher than our budget permits. Rolf Rohn, our
Liturgical Designer has met with Drew Potts and Pastor Roux and
has been asked to review the bids and to revise our plans so we
have an affordable project that will meet our needs. As always, if
you have any questions, please ask Pastor Roux or Drew Potts,
Chairman of the Nave Renewal Committee.
one place that we can touch that new creation is in the Holy Com-
munion. This is why we sing in the liturgy, “Therefore with angels
and archangels and all the company of heaven."
The early Church knew this truth, and the celebration of the
Holy Communion in the first centuries was linked very closely to the
joyous victory that Jesus had over death in his resurrection. Although
we today may have grown up with an understanding of Holy Com-
munion as penitential and individual, the early church would not have
recognized that posture. The early church gathered around the altar
table as the Eucharistic prayer was lifted to God. Standing together
everyone would lift up their hands in praise to God. John Chrysostom
(c. 349-407), an early Church Father, described it this way: “When
the whole people together with the priestly assembly stands with
hands outstretched, at the awe-inspiring sacrifice, how can we fail to
please God by praying for the dead."
May we be people who learn to cherish our time at the altar,
close to our Lord Jesus Christ and close to the Communion of Saints.
Yours In Christ,
Pastor Roux

All Saints’ Sunday
All Saints Sunday is a special celebration set apart to honor Christian
friends and family members who, during the past year, have passed
from this life and sleep in Christ, awaiting the resurrection on the last
day. During the month of October we invite you to write the names
of these saints in the “Book of Resurrection and New Life” located
by the baptismal font. On All Saints’ Sunday, November 3rd, we will
remember them in prayer and as we receive the Sacrament of Holy
Communion.

Coasters
Using ceramic tiles, book pages, and a few layers of decoupage glue and varnish, you can create beautiful coasters. It’s fun to upcycle old book pages into meaningful gifts or holiday-themed decorations like coasters for hot or cold beverages. Learn how to make your own coasters: http://www.cardstore.com/blog/diy-photo-coasters/ Bookmarks
Using your favorite book pages, fold them into a rectangular shape and add ribbon. To make them more durable, you can laminate the bookmarks before adding the ribbon. Craft Stick Puzzle
For this easy craft, all you need is craft sticks, scissors, and glue. This is a great activity for younger kids. Kids will have hours of fun putting together these puzzles. Bonus: this activity helps with developing fine motor skills and can be a great teaching tool too. Learn how to make your own craft stick puzzle: https://www.skiptomylou.org/diy-craft-stick-puzzles-by-better-in-bulk/ Table Runner
You can make an adorable table runner from old book pages by taping the pages together and using an edge-puncher to create a decorative border. To ensure the table runner is a sturdy, you may want to lacquer the book pages so it’s not too fragile. This would be great to use for literary themed parties or celebrations. Illustrated picture book pages would also make a great runner for on top of a child’s dresser. Learn how to make your own table runner: https://thistlekeylane.com/diy-book-page-table-runner/ Envelopes
When giving gift cards or cash as a present, it’s fun to use unique envelopes. This is a great idea for books that have missing or torn pages that can’t be donated. Learn how to make your own envelope: https://www.wikihow.com/Make-an-Envelope

LIBRARY NOTES
“There have never been, nor are there now, too many good books.”
~~ Martin Luther
Recycling Old and Worn Picture Books
If you’re a diehard bookworm, the thought of throwing away old books probably makes you cringe. Whenever some of your beloved picture books start getting worn out, you can upcycle them into things you’ll use. This way, you still get to keep your treasured books and make good use out of them. By using recycled and reusable materials, affordable craft supplies, and a glue gun, you can turn books into so many different items — including jewelry, furniture, décor, and more. Old and worn out picture books don’t have to be relegated to your recycle bin. Try some of these book craft ideas instead or come up with your own! Greeting Cards
Simply tear out old book pages and turn them into greeting cards that you can use for all types of occasions — birthdays, graduations, and more. Fold a book page in half and glue a blank piece of paper inside. Write your message on the blank paper and gift it! These homemade cards are usually a hit at children’s birthday parties. Pinwheels
Your kids will love making and playing with pinwheels made from old book pages. Use lollipop sticks, wooden sticks, or wire to attach your folded book pages. Give them a spin and watch them twirl! Learn how to make your own pinwheels: https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pinwheel

make with pumpkin? Think of the pies, the cookies, and
the pumpkin breads, all so very yummy and they all require
cans of pumpkin. Let us think of our neighbor’s holiday
meal and bring cans and cans of pumpkin to make these
wonderful desserts during November. Bring any size can
