Principal’s CommentKia ora, Tēnā tātou katoa parents, caregivers, students and friends of the school.

Another week gone, another week closer to the senior practice exams. These begin on Monday and I wish our senior students all the best for these. Hopefully the amount of revision that some have undertaken will be rewarded in results. I would encourage students to make the best use of the study time they are given during the week. It is never too late to learn a few extra facts or practise some skills that might just allow you to answer given questions with more confidence.

A reminder that Monday is a teacher only day for all students not involved in examinations. This frees teachers up to be engaged in professional development around writing and literacy across the curriculum. Facilitators both from and outside of the city are coming to assist staff in this process as well as sharing some of the great teaching as inquiry projects that staff have been involved in this year.

Outstanding Success:The school congratulates Kasib Murdoch-McKeich (Year 13) who has won a place on the New Zealand Youth Olympics Boxing Team. Kasib recently competed in Taipei, Taiwan and gained a silver medal. This resulted in Kasib gaining a position on the NZ team. He will travel to Argentina later this year and will represent NZ in the 60kg Youth Male Class. This is indeed the highest honour possible and an outstanding achievement.

Launch out into the deepFamous television evangelist Dr Robert Schuller’s hobbies include raising koi fish. Asked why some grow big while others stay small, he replied, “If a koi lives in a small tank it will never grow longer than 5 of six centimetres. In a larger pond they can grow up to 25 centimetres long – in ponds the size of mine they’ll grow up to 45 centimetres long – but if they live in a huge lake where they can swim and stretch, they can grow up to a metre long. The size of the pond determines the size of the fish. Similarly, little ideas in

little-thinking minds produce little achievements. But little ideas embraced by big-thinking minds produce enormous achievements.”

So where do we fit into this picture, students, staff, management, parents? How big are we prepared to think? Clearly some students are thinking big and some of the recent successes, such as the one described before or those you find on the billboards at the front of the school, demonstrate that.

Edison had to install electric lights for free in an office building before anyone even came to look at them. The first sewing machine invented was destroyed by a mob in France. Morse waited ten years before the world showed any interest in his telegraph. And when the idea of travelling by railroad was introduced, people scoffed because it was widely believed that travelling at 50 kph stopped blood circulation in the human body.

Ronald E Osborn said, “Undertake something difficult; it will do you some good. Unless you try something beyond what you have already mastered, you’ll never grow.” You attain in direct proportion to what you attempt; Launch out into the deep.”

When I first arrived here at KVC, to a certain extent it was with some degree of comfort. I thought, having been in management for 16 years, I would have all the bases covered. Then came the challenge of trying to market a school in a city where the population of students available was in decline. Never before had I been involved in an exercise of this kind, so you could say I was trying something I had not mastered. It would seem that this marketing has seen some success. Likewise, we introduced change and some said it would never work. Well it has and today we reap the benefits of this.

As mentioned, senior students are about to sit exams. In many cases the results will reflect the effort put in. The challenge for the next 3 months is to step out and to try and go beyond what you have already achieved.

Brathwaite Centre News

Student of the week: Brett Horgan – for independent participation at Sport Otago.

It’s been a very busy week at the Brathwaite Centre with production practices in full swing. Students and staff are very busy preparing props, music, costumes and song and dance. It was our first time walking through the

script on stage in the school hall working on lines, songs and stage environment. We are looking forward to working with some KVC teaching staff, mainstream students and of course the wonderful Brathwaite Centre staff!

It was marvellous to see our fantastic students dress up in famous characters from books for the Mufti day to fundraise for the school Library. It was one of the best turn out of costumes from ‘Where’s Wally’ to ‘Willie Wonka.”

In Wednesday Science students watched very interesting experiments with chemical reactions. The Foods group tried out a new recipe for macaroni cheese.

We said farewell to Miss O’Loan this week and welcomed Mr McMillan to the Centre.

Chrysalis

Imagine life as a chrysalis You begin within a shell Transparent and hollow

And slowly you grow To fill that shimmering prison When you grow big enough Your booming voice shakes

The cage and you ask Why you are trapped within the chrysalis

Outside you see webs of gossamer Dreams and things you think

You’ll never touch Oceans of stardust You’ll never drink in

But one day You notice something

You are growing so much The cage is breaking around you

Crumbling like glass Pouring away like sand

The chrysalis can’t contain One such as you anymore

The glowing world, so alive Has so much to say to you

You’re ready You’re of age

You thought you were scared You thought you couldn’t make it

But you grow And keep growing

And you fill the oceansWith your life

And when you pass When your dreams

Are fulfilled When your time is up

Not frittered away Spent meaningfully You will look back

At the start of your life At the little bits of the chrysalis

Left within your satisfaction And you will laugh

Because you made it You made it

3rd place Oscar Tobeck

A story for you, love

You are a pain in the neck, you make me wish I didn’t have to check

Let’s shove all of your pent up anger onto paper, scattered with ink flecks

Lets then burn that paper and hope it won’t be rememberedAs a memory of what could’ve helped us shelter

There’s a storm rolling in love, let’s head to my deskI’ll hold you close and forget you, as you lay your

head on my shoulder to restAnd sweat will be running down my face as I

scribble out nonsense rhymes Chicken scratch that’ll never make sense when it’s time

Let’s rip out my anxiety and lay it on the page, Let’s watch as it trembles and burns with my rage

And let’s laugh at the missed opportunities and misguided gestures

Let me think up repeated patterns of nonsense in scribbled letters

I will grip at my hair, and him? That boy? He’ll only stare at the strands as they fall to the floor

And then he’ll be a man and he’ll just slam the doorBecause he has changed in almost every way but you see

He still won’t care for meTake all my screw ups, my endless muck ups,

make them unrealExtend them into something that makes people laugh,

they don’t feelDraw fantastical beasts that could never exist,

could never be somethingAnd toss all of the scrapped ideas for pain

on to these innocent drawingsAnd now there’s my mother, confused as to

how she managed to raise this child,How did she raise this child

This angry, listless, nervous, self deprecating kidThe supposedly apathetic creature makes a

whole world in his headTo escape the reality of the things his

hands are doingNot just gripping a pen

2018 WriteNow Poetry competition for Dunedin secondary school students

Writing SuccessTwo of our students had success in the WriteNow Poetry competition for Dunedin Secondary students. Last week we celebrated Jacob Cone’s first equal placing for his poem “ Chrysalis”. Oscar Tobeck from year 11 was placed third in the senior section; Oscar’s poem was titled “A story for you, love”. Congratulations to Jacob and Oscar on their success.

Page 4: Kaikorai Valley College Newsletter · 8/24/2018  · Take all my screw ups, my endless muck ups, make them unreal Extend them into something that makes people laugh, they don’t

Not just gripping a penI don’t want to be real

I don’t need to existI try not to write but my

hands always persistGet up

Wake upThey don’t need you

But you need youBack to the desk

Back to you leaning on my shoulder loveI lay my legs across your lap, lean my back against the

uncomfortable intricate patterns that some factory thought would make an aesthetically pleasing surrounding

And I’ll pull back from the frame and wince as the wooden flowers leave imprints on my shoulders

It’s wrong, it’s not pleasing, it leaves my head pounding

You are a pain in the neck, i didn’t want to checkYour anger has torn my page,

I couldn’t type something that complex outI have to burn the paper, I have to burn the paper

It wasn’t for shelterI’ll stay cold

Music NotesJunior College - ‘Rolling Thunder’Last Friday, our Year 9 and 10s had a taster of our Junior College rock band, ‘Rolling Thunder’. The band has been busy practising both their musicianship and stage craft before they perform at the 2018 Bandquest, which will be held this year on Tuesday 28 August at the King’s and Queen’s Performing Arts Centre. Starting at 6.00pm.

Shortage of KVC KiltsDue to an increase in our roll, we are experiencing an extreme shortage of kilts available for our new students. If you do have a kilt at home that is not being used, we would be most grateful for any donations or if you prefer, sell it via our second hand uniform shop. Contact Kim Dasler on 027 488 5280 or call the school on 453 6035 or email [email protected], or simply drop it off to the main office, with your name and contact details and the amount you would like for the sale of the kilt. Many thanks.

Career Moves

Defensive Driving Course - There is an AA Defensive Driving Course being held at school for Year 12 and 13 students who have had their learner licence for a minimum of three months. The course is being run for the last four weeks of the term each Tuesday afternoon. Students are also required to complete homework and an In-Car session. They must attend all sessions and bring a car along to complete the practical drive. The cost of the course is only $10 due to the generous sponsorship of the Otago Motor Club Trust and STAR funding. This is a great opportunity and a Defensive Driving course takes six months off achieving a Full Licence. Students who would like to take advantage of this opportunity need to sign up in the Careers Office or in the Ridley Room or email Mrs Beagley.

STAR Term 3 Holiday Courses – If you have a Year 12 or 13 student who is needing extra credits this is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable qualifications to add to their CV’s while gaining extra credits. These holiday courses are popular with all Dunedin schools and places fill up fast. If your son or daughter would like to attend one of these courses please encourage them to collect an enrolment form from the Careers Office sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. Senior Assessment Week: Monday 27 - Friday 31 AugustStudents in years 11, 12, and 13 have been emailed the assessment week timetable. A copy is in below. Please look over this with your son/daughter so you are aware of the times when he/she is expected at school during assessment week.

• Year 11, 12 and 13 students are only required at school when they have an assessment scheduled. Otherwise they are on study leave and expected to be at home studying.

• Year 11, 12 and 13 students must stay for the entire time of their assessment session. For some students this will mean a late finish in the afternoon.

• Year 11, 12 and 13 students may wear appropriate mufti for the week.Senior students should be revising for their practice exams and assessments. For students sitting practice external examinations, they will only get useful feedback from their exams if they have revised and given their best effort. Those students sitting internal assessments need to take the opportunity to achieve the maximum number of credits possible. A reminder the Year 7, 8, 9, and 10 students will continue with their school as normal during assessment week, with the exception of the Teacher Only Day on Monday 27 August.

Kasib Murdoch has recently returned from the Taipei City Cup, an international boxing event with 11 other competing countries. Kasib fought in the 60 kg Youth Male and came home with the silver. He has also now been chosen to represent NZ at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in October. He will be our only male competing in boxing along with one female. This is such an exciting opportunity and we wish Kasib the very best of luck. The KVC Senior A Netball Team will be competing in the South Island Secondary Schools’ Tournament from September 3-6. It will be held in Dunedin this year, which is always a bonus as we don’t have to fundraise for a trip out of town. The girls have been training hard and are looking forward to the competition.Results7&8 Hockey - Friday August 17 - McMillan Hockey TurfKVC (1) vs Tahuna B (3)Basketball - Friday August 17Snr A Boys won by default vs OBHS Buffalos

McDonald’s Receipts’ PromotionOur Parent Group have asked that if families happen to buy at McDonald’s that they keep their receipts, collect them up and drop them into the drop box at the school office, which will be organised by the Parent Group. The reason for this is that McDonald’s is having a promotion that when all of the receipts

are returned to McDonald’s they are added up and then the school receives back 20% of the total in McDonald’s vouchers. These, then would be used for prizes in school raffles and quiz nights etc.

Junior Club of Origin SeriesSeptember 8th, 15th & 22nd

U15 and U17 age groups (subject to interest and playing numbers)

The aim of this series is to give players who are now attending secondary school a chance to returnto where it all started, play with old team mates and get back in contact with their Junior Rugby Club!

Please circulate this information to players, coaches, managers over the next month. Expressions of interest from clubs will be called for in late July early August.

Our Year 7 and 8s have been busy this week with the start of the Rugby League 9s competition which is running weekly on a Tuesday for 5 weeks. The Sassenachs Rugby one day tournament was held on Wednesday at Bishopscourt. KVC entered two girls’ 10s teams and a 15 a side boys’ team. We struggled for size against the bigger Intermediates, however the players had a lot of fun and scored some good tries. We were lucky to have our marquee set up to shelter from the cold wind and intermittent rain.
