The Worship of God
Cultivating A Thankful Heart
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. - Colossians 3:15
Pastor Warren Wiersbe tells the story about a ministerial student named Edward Spencer. He lived in Evanston, Illinois, and was part of a lifesaving squad on the banks of Lake Michigan.
One night, a ship went aground on the lake and Spencer was called into action. Again and again he waded into the frigid waters to rescue 17 passengers. And, in the process, the sub-zero temperatures left his health permanently damaged.
Many years later at Spencer’s funeral, it was mentioned that he had saved 17 lives that night, and was left disabled in the process. Someone mentioned, “Those passengers must have been so grateful.” To which a family member responded, "As a matter of fact, not one of them ever thanked him.”
Thankfulness seems to be a lost quality. Many people don’t see the value in stopping to acknowledge the kindness of others -- or of God, who sent His only Son to die for our sins.
Learn to be thankful. Focus on what you have. When you complain, you focus on what you don’t have. Take the time to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness to others, and to God.
Prayer Challenge
Pray and ask God to give you a heart of thankfulness for everything you’ve been given. It's likely to be a long list.
Questions for Thought Why do you think so many people forget to express thankfulness? What might a stronger attitude of thankfulness look like in your life? How might it change your life?

MISSIONS AT ST. JAMES “In Christ, we are a new creation…” 2 Corinthians 5:17
The St. James Mission Committee is undergoing a transformation. Dave Himmelsbach is retiring after 15 years of dedicated and outstanding service, and he deserves a huge “Thank You” from all of us. Bill and Valerie Hinesley have agreed to co-lead the Mission Committee, but want each of you to know that it will take more than just two people to fill Dave’s shoes!
Have you felt a tug on your heart from the words of the Great Commission (Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:19)? Then this is your chance to serve! Join Bill and Valerie on the Mission Committee that will work to support our mission teams. Church members of all ages and experience are welcome to become part of this group. An organizational meeting will be held on Sunday, February 25th following the 11:00 am service in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring your own sandwich—chips and drinks will be provided. Please let Bill and Valerie know if you plan to attend. For more information, contact Bill and Valerie at 706-765-4444 or at [email protected].
Please note: There will be a meeting of the Building Committee this Sunday, February 11th, at 4:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall.
