TRANSCRIPT
The worship drama, “Witnesses” will be performed at Immanuel on
Sunday, April 26 at 9:30 A.M. during the worship service. The one-man play
features professional actor and speaker, Jonathan P. Swenson.
In this dramatic performance, Swenson portrays eight different
characters (historical and imagined) as each responds to Jesus. Through the
eyes of these characters, both comic and serious, the audience is challenged
to see Jesus from fresh perspectives. You won’t want to miss it.
THE IMMANUEL INFORMER
April 2015
MISSION STATEMENT Building Strong Relationships in Christ,
And Making Him Known to All.
Dear Friends,
We’re glad the days are
finally getting warmer after a
long and cold winter. The
weather has caused some of our
members not to be able to get
out each week for worship these
past months. We hope all of the
Immanuel family will make an effort during the coming
weeks and months to be a part of our weekly gatherings. We
have a very special month ahead.
On Sunday, April 5 we celebrate the Lord’s resurrection
with our Sunrise Service at 7:00am and our Festival Service
at 9:30am. The youth will service the traditional Easter
Breakfast from 8:00-9:00am.
On Sunday, April 12 we will welcome to our service
Trevor Rubenstein, the Executive Director of “Good News
for Israel,” a wonderful organization headquartered in
Minneapolis, that reaches out with the Gospel of Christ to
Jews in Israel and America. Several others from that
organization will share at our adult class that day.
On Sunday, April 19 we look forward to hearing from our
six confirmands as they share from the pulpit and the altar
railing concerning their commitment to Christ. Let’s support
these young people with our attendance that day. They have
some wonderful things to share with us.
On Sunday, April 26 we will enjoy having Paraphrase
Theatre’s Jonathan Swenson perform during the worship
service a one man drama dealing with the various witnesses
to Christ’s ministry, death and resurrection. You will
certainly be blessed by his presentation. More information
can be found on the color poster in this newsletter.
You won’t want to miss any of these special services. May
God speak to us in new ways as we faithfully gather to
worship Him.

Special Invitation
The family of Sierra Tate would like to
invite you to join us Sunday, April 19th for
refreshments in the Social Hall following the
worship service.
Sierra wants to celebrate her confirmation with the
entire congregation and thank you for the part you have
played in her Spiritual Growth over the past 15 years.
(Note: Since the winter weather kept many members from worship during the first part of the year,
would you consider an extra gift during the Easter season?)
Confirmation Sunday - April 19
The following ninth graders will
affirm their faith in Christ at the 9:30
A.M. worship service on Sunday,
April 19: Eryn Delahoussaye, Riley
Holmgren, Graham Nicholson, Claire Petzenhauser,
Sierra Tate, and Luke Wyatt. Please remember these
young people in your prayers and support them with
your presence at the service that day.
Note: The worship service on April 19 will
remain at 9:30 A.M. Sunday School and Adult
classes will meet as usual at 8:30 A.M.
Adult Class in the Social Hall
On Sunday, April 12 we will hear from several
people from Minneapolis who have just returned
from a trip to the Holy Land where they did
evangelical work among the general population. It
will be exciting to hear their stories. The trip was
sponsored by “Good News for Israel.” The
executive director of this organization will preach
at our worship service that Sunday.
April 19 – May 3 we will discuss the first
episodes of A.D., the new 12 week TV series
covering the events of the book of Acts that will be
seen on NBC each Sunday evening beginning
Easter Sunday. Clips from the episodes will be
shown. You won’t want to miss these sessions.
Everyone is welcome.
Study guides for the entire series can be
purchased for $8.00 in the narthex or in the church
office. For more information about this TV series
turn to the color poster in this newsletter.
You and Me Forever: Marriage in
Light of Eternity
This adult education series resumes
Sunday, April 12th at 8:30 a.m. in the
Cornerstone Room and runs through
May 3. Based on the book from best-
selling author Francis Chan and Lisa
Chan, this Bible study series
challenges you to view your marriage like never
before. The inspiring videos help us dive deeper
into the content of the book, exploring themes like:
A jealous God asks us to pursue Him first and
most. Then life makes sense, and everything
falls into its proper place.
Love, laughter, and intimacy were all created to
be enjoyed. So there is a way to love family
deeply without ignoring heaven.
It all comes down to our focus. Jesus was right.
We have it all backwards. The way to have a great
marriage is by not focusing on marriage.
Visit www.youandmeforever.org to watch
previous episodes you missed, order the book, or
download a free copy of the book if you can’t
afford it.
The End of Lent
Here we are through Lent, God.
It’s Easter…
But that’s not how I act.
I act as if —- “Well, that’s over for another year!”
God, help me to rejoice and be glad;
To feel the reality and wonder of the resurrection
with my whole being;
To be able to mean “Hallelujah!”
as I mean my shouts of joy
when I discover a truth and
really understand it,
when work I’ve done is praised and appreciated.
May the reality of Easter awaken this depth of feeling
and meaning
in all my life,
so I can look at life —
and shout
“Hooray!”

Rescheduled Young Adults Dinner Out
On Saturday, April 11th, the Young Adults are
heading out for dinner together in Ames. We’ll talk
about ways we can more intentionally follow Jesus
in the everyday stuff of life. Need childcare? Some
of our teens and adults will have pizza, games, and
activities for your kids in Immanuel’s nursery and
chapel from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Donations will go toward this
summer’s youth mission trip to
Indianapolis!
Please RSVP to Pastor Kurt at
[email protected] to find out
where we’re going and to let us
know how many to expect.
Sunday School News
Easter is on April 5th and we will NOT have Sunday
school that day.
The Kingdom Kids ( 3 year old - 1st grade) will start the
lesson, Growing for Jesus, on April 12. The lessons in this
series will help children learn that they need to grow both
physically and spiritually so they can do the work of God.
The Young Disciples (2nd - 6th) will have a speaker on
April 12 who will be talking about Sportsmanship. The
next two Sundays, April 19 and 26 will be devoted to
practicing for the end of the year program on May 3. Please
have your children present at the practices. If your child
will not be able to attend the May 3rd program please e-
mail Lisa at [email protected] and let her know.
Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School will be June 8th-11th. Bible
School is a great way for the youth in our church and
community to experience God. The theme for the week is
"Transformed". "Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God's will is - His good,
pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2
Bible School will run from 9:00-2:00 for
kids entering 1st - 6th, and 9:00-11:30 for kids
3yrs – entering Kindergarten (preschool class pending if
we have a teacher volunteer). The enrollment form is
available online; please complete one for each child and
turn it in to the church office prior to the start of Day Camp
so we can have an accurate head count for the Riverside
team who will be leading. Kids in 1st-6th grade need to
bring a sack lunch and drink each day. A program featuring
the highlights of Bible School will be Thursday night, June
11th at 7 pm. Volunteers are always needed and very
helpful to make the week run smoothly! Current needs are
host families for Riverside staff, lunch providers for
Riverside staff, snack providers, class helpers, ice cream,
and registration day helpers. Please contact the church
office at 733.4972 if you can help!
We are looking forward to having a
number of individuals and families join
our congregation on Sunday, May 3. For
those who are presently a part of non-
Lutheran churches, we will have three
classes, at which time we will review the
basic elements of the Christian faith.
Those transferring from other Lutheran
churches will be asked to attend the last
class. Please let Pastor Anenson, Pastor
Jensen or the church office know if you
would like to join our faith community!
Piano Recital
The students of Milianna Carlson will
participate in a piano recital in the
Immanuel Chapel on Sunday, April 12 at
2 P.M. Everyone is welcome to attend.
April is Month of the Young Child &
Child Abuse Prevention Month
In 2014, LSI’s early childhood
programs made more than 14,900 home
visits to Iowa families with infants,
toddlers and preschoolers. These programs
help parents learn about child
development, parenting strategies and
community resources, and they can also
help reduce some of the risk factors that
may lead to child abuse or neglect, such as
critical stress. LSI often partners with
parents who grew up in unstable home
environments and desire to give their own
children a different quality of life. Your
support helps our youngest Iowans grow
up healthy and safe!
Upcoming Riverside programs
Mark your calendars for the upcoming
Riverside programs. Check Immanuel’s
narthex bulletin board or Riverside’s
website (www.RiversideLBC.org) for
more information. Register online or pick
up a registration form from the church
office.

News from the Coyles
Dear Praying Friends,
Ukraine has been a hot topic again in the media, due to
the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine. The conflict has
become a gaping wound for the country of Ukraine and its
people who have suffered so much. Because of the distance
from the actual fighting, we don’t feel threatened in a
military sense here outside of Odessa. However, the
pressures of the war and Ukraine’s crumbling economy, a
direct result of the ongoing instability, are distinctly felt.
We have appreciated your concern for us during this
difficult time for Ukraine as a nation. Yet for us and our
ministry, the political conflict seems like the tip of the
iceberg. It’s visible and easily identifiable, but beneath the
surface larger problems exist.
Challenges have come from without and within the
Bible School. Due to the political climate, relationships
with partners were strained. As the context for ministry
evolved, we realized that the full-time, residential model
for the Bible School was no longer sustainable or even
responsible. The school board had hopes of changing the
model to make it more accessible for Ukrainian young
people. Much to our surprise, the former Bible School
director resigned, introducing a new set of challenges for
the school. Andy has served as interim director since
January 1.
Due to the many serious and deep issues related to the
Bible School, as well as the departure of co-missionaries
Ole Magnus and Sasha Breivold this July, we sensed that
our time here was winding down. The past few months
have confirmed this direction. After much prayer, counsel,
and deliberation, we have decided to end our call and will
return to the US following graduation June 28.
This has been a difficult past year. As we process this
for ourselves, it is helpful to remember each face that God
has brought to us at the Bible School and other events. We
are thankful for those students whom we have seen God
change and renew by the power of his Word. Despite the
deep frustrations and disappointments of the past year and
a half, God has worked.
Please be in prayer for us as we continue to work
through these changes. There are so many things that need
to happen over the course of the next few months.
In His Love,
Andy, Monica, Moriah, Isaiah, Josiah and Levi
Note: Let us pray for the Coyle family during this difficult
time.
The Coyle Family
Sometimes It’s Hard to Ask for Help
We’re brought up to be strong, self-
sufficient, independent people. We tend to
think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of
weakness. So we try to keep our struggles
hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that’s
not God’s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one
another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of
Christ.” God wants us to care for others—and
allow others to care for us in our time of need.
If you’re sad or struggling inside, don’t
suffer alone. Ask for help. We’ve got a team of
Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care,
encourage, pray, and help you through a tough
time. (It’s confidential too!) Find out more
about Stephen Ministry by talking with one of
our Stephen Leaders: Pastor Anenson, Pastor
Kurt, or Gayle Tate.
Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!
As Holy Week approaches, our thoughts turn to the
people and events that played a vital role in the great
story of our redemption. Recruited by Christ himself and
the only disciple Jesus called “friend.” Judas Iscariot has
always been the villain, the one who inevitably prompts
the question, “How could he do that?” Tasca Lee, in her
book Iscariot, A Novel of Judas has written an insightful
look into the character of Judas as well as the culture and
events of the time. What was the motivation behind
Judas’s decision to give Jesus over to his enemies? Not
only will readers find themselves rethinking the life of
Judas Iscariot, but also asking “Would I have had the
faith and courage to be one of those early followers of
Christ?”
Readers of Lauraine Snelling’s “Red River” books
and subsequent series will want to continue on with the
Bjorkland family in To Everything a Season. The little
town of Blessing, North Dakota is experiencing growing
pains. As more people come to settle there, the town’s
two doctors, sisters-in-law Elizabeth and Astrid, and their
small hospital find themselves stretched thin. Help comes
when a nursing internship program is established with a
Chicago hospital and the first nursing students arrive, but
does Blessing have enough to offer professionally and
personally to keep the city girls there? This is another
enjoyable book in the multi-generational saga of the
Bjorkland family.
Kansas author Kim Vogel Sawyer chose an earlier
time in her own state’s history as the setting for her novel
A Hopeful Heart. Widowed rancher’s wife Hattie Wyatt
has seen a goodly number of young women arrive from
the East in search of husbands, only to find frustration
and disappointment due to a lack of understanding of the
necessary skills needed to survive as a rancher’s wife on
the Kansas prairie. Thus is born the Wyatt Herdsman
School of Barnett, Kansas. With the goal of teaching the
young ladies to be “somebody who know ranchin’ inside
an’ out,” Hattie has her work cut out for her with the
arrival of the first six girls. Tressa, the most unlikely
candidate to be successful, forms a special bond with
Hattie, but can she win over the most unlikely candidate
for marriage in the area? Adding a bit of intrigue in the
form of a cattle rustling mystery, Ms. Sawyer has written
a thoroughly enjoyable story.
Experience this season of promise by stopping in the
library. We promise you’ll find a great book to read!
Easter blessings to all.
Graduation Faith Stepping Stone Our high school seniors and
their families are nearing the end
of their last year together. Soon
God will send them off on new
adventures.
In our Graduation Faith
Stepping Stone, seniors and their
parents gather three times over the course of the
year for a meal and a chance to reflect on the
journey of their life together. They look back at
the blessings God has provided them in each
other. They work on setting things right with
each other in the present moment. They dream
together about the calling God is giving them in
their future. Our last Graduation Faith Stepping
Stone brunch will be held in the Cornerstone
Room after church on Sunday, April 12th.
Seniors, please call or email the church office to
let us know if you can come! Feel free to bring
other seniors and their families; just let us know
how many to plan for! If you’d like to honor our
seniors by helping with the meal or the
Graduation Stepping Stone, please talk to Pastor
Kurt. You can find out more about the Faith
Stepping Stones at www.faithink.com.
