RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “It Takes All Kinds”
Jews the world over celebrate Purim this month
by reading megillat Esther on the 14th day of Adar (the
evening of March 15th and the morning of the 16th this
year). The story of Esther teaches us several things about
identity, specifically about Jewish identity. There are two
modes of Jewish identification in the story, that of Esther
and that of her cousin (yes, cousin) Mordecai. Esther is
said to conceal the fact of her Jewishness when she
becomes the king’s favorite, and she does not reveal it
after she becomes queen. It seems that simply by not
stating her identity she is able to conceal who she is,
which suggests that Esther does not appear to be any
different from anyone else either in dress, behavior or
language. In short, Esther is an assimilated Jew.
Mordecai, on the other hand, is repeatedly called
‘Mordecai the Jew’ in the text, and when he refuses to
bow down to Haman, Haman immediately decides to kill
the Jews throughout the kingdom. Unlike Esther,
Mordecai’s Jewish identity is obvious to all who see him.
He does not hide it, nor do others show any confusion
over it.
By the story’s end, Esther and Mordecai have
together saved the Jewish people by revealing Esther’s
identity as a Jew to her Persian husband, the king. One
lesson we derive from these two different kinds of Jews,
one whose Judaism is private and the other for whom it is
public, is that there is great value in having a variety of
approaches to our identities as Jews. Had it not been for
Esther’s hidden Jewishness, the Jews of Persia may have
been destroyed. Had it not been for Mordecai, Esther may

“It Takes All Kinds” (continued)
never have felt compelled to either hide or, later, reveal
her identity. The story teaches us that the public and
the private Jew have a common bond and that each is
responsible to the other. In Hebrew the name for that
value is klal Yisrael, meaning the sum of all the
constituent parts of the Jewish community. Our shared
history and culture bind all of us to one another,
regardless of the form that our Jewishness takes. As in
the case of Mordecai and Esther, differences among us
as Jews can be a positive value: Each type has its role
to play in ensuring the continuity of the whole.
We see that dynamic in play in American
Jewish life. While the beliefs and practices of
Conservative Judaism sometimes differ from those of
the other modern movements, we all gain from those
differences. An emphasis on social action, on musical
innovation and the move toward egalitarian practice in
the Reform movement have had obvious and positive
influences on our own. And the adherence to traditional
prayer, serious text study and Jewish ritual in the
Orthodox world are ideals toward which we should also
strive. Our movement has also had a positive effect on
the other two, pulling the extremes back toward the
center.
And the relationship between Israeli and
diaspora Jews is also one of interdependence despite
difference. Without the financial and political support of
American Jews, Israel may have had a much harder
time of things over the years. And without a Jewish
state to create an all-encompassing culture for Jewish
living, most American Jews would have little access to
a life shaped by Jewish time, holidays, Hebrew
language and so on, not to mention the safe haven that
Israel provides for Jews threatened by anti-Semitism.
On Purim we celebrate the distinctiveness of
all kinds of Jewish life, whether we are a Mordecai or
an Esther, or any other type of Jew. Each needs the
other to survive and to thrive. On this holiday more
than any other, we should all drink to that.
Hag Purim same’akh.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
MISSION STATEMENT
Congregation Beth Judea is a
welcoming, egalitarian synagogue
whose mission is to create a warm
and inviting home that serves the
lifelong spiritual, educational and
fellowship needs of our members.
Consistent with the principles of the
Conservative Movement, we
embrace Torah and our responsibility
to serve and support the greater
Jewish community, the community at
large, the United States of America
and the State of Israel.
BOARD POSITIONS NOW AVAILABLE
The Board of Directors’ has provided approval to Debbie Kreisman
Dubin, President of Congregation Beth Judea (CBJ), to convene a
nominating committee. This committee has the responsibility to evaluate
and recommend candidates to fill all open board positions as of July 1,
2014. There are five positions available for at-large Board Members to
be of service for a three year term. In addition, there is a one year term
available to fill a Board vacancy.
Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for
service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for
guiding many aspects of our Congregational life, some of those including
oversight of our Professional Staff, budgeting, finance matters and
establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations – all while
serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board
Members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing
committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our
synagogue’s programs.
Why become a Board Member? A fair question to ask – with perhaps
rewards that you may never have expected to receive. This is an
opportunity to give back to your community, explore a ‘personal stretch’
in being of service, sharing with other members of our vibrant
organization, exploring other areas of interest that you may have never
considered before or, perhaps, even a vision of adding to a larger role of
leadership. Everyone has something to bring to the table – this is a
unique opportunity for you to consider taking action on.
Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following
questions to begin the process and assist the committee. Your response,
via email to Debbie Kreisman Dubin at [email protected] must
be submitted before Wednesday, March 19:
1. How long have you been a member of CBJ?
2. What, if any committees have you previously served on –
or are presently serving?
3. Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the
Board of Directors?
4. What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How
would you envision participating in pursuing that interest?
Sincerely,
Debbie Kreisman Dubin

A SPECIAL MESSAGE
“Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were? Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

A MESSAGE FROM EVAN AND MERLE RUMACK
Dear Beth Judea Friends,
Many, many thanks to Michael Gluck, Andrew Bauman, and the entire
Purim Masquerade committee for the wonderful honor of making us King
and Queen this year and for making the Purim Masquerade Ball so
memorable and beautiful.
Thank you also to the CBJ staff
and everyone who supported
this event with your time, your
creativity, your attendance, and
your tributes for the wonderful
ad book. We had so much fun
and are still euphoric! This was
an unforgettable experience,
and we are so very grateful to
everyone at Beth Judea - our

BE HAPPY, IT'S PURIM! When Adar arrives, we increase our joy.”
"החמשב ןיברמ רדא סנכנשמ"
Fascinating Festival Facts! The Book of Esther never once mentions G-d’s name. This final book of the Tanakh is the
only book in the Scriptures holding that distinction. So where was G-d? Between the lines and behind the scenes!
According to tradition, we are required to hear the Megillah each year. Have you been keeping up?
During the reading of the Megillah we interrupt with noise not only when Haman’s name is read, but when the names of his ten sons are read, too.
Speaking of the sons, we are supposed to read the verse of their hanging in one breath. An entire section of the Talmud is dedicated to the laws of Purim. What is the section
called? Fittingly, it’s called Megillah! Purim Activities for You: Try This Sephardic Tradition
Did you know that Sephardic Jews (traditionally from Africa, Spain and Portugal) have a special tradition for Purim? It is their custom to wrap pastry dough around a decorated hard-boiled egg to create the shape of a Purim character or an animal. After baking, these artistic creations, or Folares, are displayed with pride and eaten with delight.
Parashat Shekalim (Exodus 30:11–16) 11 G-d said to Moses: 12 When you count the Israelites, have each pay a fee … 13 a half-shekel as an offering to G-d. 14 Everyone twenty years or older will give this amount: 15 the rich will not pay more and the poor will not pay less than half a shekel when giving this offering. 16 Take the money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting …
Fascinating Facts: The Machatzit HaShekel (Half-Shekel)
Today we can’t fully practice the mitzvah of giving the half-shekel because the Temple does not exist. We remember the mitzvah, though , and every year read a special portion about it in the Torah.
Some people have an annual tradition of giving a “half-shekel” of the current local currency to the poor before or during the Fast of Esther. For example, in the United States, you might give a half a dollar, while in England, you might give one half-pound Sterling.
Some people give three half-shekels to charity on Erev Purim. Why three? Once for each time the word terumah (donation) appears in Exodus 30:11-16.

Striving to create the best learning experiences for our students, Beth Judea, Temple Chai and Beth Am are combining their 8th through 12th grade programs to create a community high school, Beyachad, which means “together”. We are redefining what it means to be a student in the Northwest Suburbs! By combining our resources, Beyachad enhances student’s learning opportunities with more diverse classes, taught by five clergy of the three synagogues, as well as other teachers. Our 8th graders, who will be part of Beyachad, will have a special 8th grade-only experience for the first two trimesters focusing on Israel (and getting our students ready for Ta’am Yisrael) and Middot (Jewish Values). They will join in with the 9th-12th Grade electives in the third trimester. The 12th graders will have a special Senior Seminar that will take place at that same time, so 8th graders and 12th graders won’t be in class together.
CLASS BREAKDOWN:
Sessions are Mondays from 6:30—8:30 pm

YOUTH
Page 20 The Word March 2014
Dear Beth Judea Family-
I was recently walking around our synagogue on a Shabbat morning. It was one of those times I was
constantly switching hats (youth director, dalet teacher, gimel teacher, and father) with my dalet
students leading the service upstairs, my gimel students having their gimel Shabbat service
downstairs, my USYers and Kadimaniks having a teen creative minyan in the youth lounge, and my
daughter in the back of the sanctuary with my mother singing along and waiting to kiss the Torah. It
was during all of this running around the synagogue trying to play multiple different roles that I
realized just how incredible our synagogue community is on a Shabbat morning. There truly is
something for everybody, with Gan Shabbat downstairs for all of our bet and younger students, gimel
Shabbat for the 5th graders, a teen minyan for the 6th through 12th graders, an interpretive minyan
being run upstairs in the conference room, and oh, of course, the main service in the sanctuary.
Every single person in this entire congregation can find a service that fits their comfort level. In finally
taking a chance to step back and see what was going on, I was able to see all the amazing groups as
one big community davening in ways that made each person feel whole. That being said, I
encourage each and every one of you to try one of the services that we have here on a Sabbath
morning. There really is something for everybody
This coming month of March is a very busy one for our youth groups. On March 9th, Kadima and
Kadinker children are going to be traveling to Enchanted Castle for an afternoon filled with arcades,
laser tag, go karts, bounce houses, and more. On the same day our USY group will be participating
in the USCJ annual concert. At the celebration of our youth concert at Beth Shalom in Northbrook, all
of our BJUSY board members will be honored along with the guests of honor, Suzi and David
Hakimian. All money from that concert will be going to help CHUSY region and will directly benefit all
of our youth. The rest of the month will consist of our annual Purim Carnival, a special kidnap of the
Megillah, a Quilt your Own Israel program complete with a celebration of our recent international
awards, and so much more.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PURIM CARNIVAL –
SISTERHOOD SOURCE
It was cold and snowy outside, but we dined and pampered ourselves in the warmth of each other’s company
in February.
Nosh-A-Night is a little like a mystery. You’re not sure who you will be with or what you will eat. Everyone
gets to mingle with new people and old friends and eat heartily. This year was fun for all. Thank you to
everyone who opened their homes to us and had to deal with all the slush. Thank you to Laura Zoller and
Darlene Bikshorn for planning this terrific evening.
Our 3rd Annual Vashti program was held on February 24th. It was a great night of pampering and shopping.
People who attended could receive everything from manicures to massages to Reike and Palm Reading;
plus, the opportunity to shop at over 20 vendors all in the same place. Thank you to Ellen Antman, Elizabeth
Ladin-Gross (we miss you) and their wonderful committee.
Our Book Club met to discuss Herman Wouk’s The Lawgiver. Next Book Club we will be reading two books:
Swimming Across the Hudson by Joshua Henkin and the Women’s League Oprah’s Book Club Selection, The
Purim Superhero by Elizabeth Kushner, a children’s book selected because of its ties to this year’s Women’s
League initiative, Mishpachah: The Modern Jewish Family. We hope you will join us on Wednesday April 23rd
to discuss both books.
We have two wonderful programs planned for you in March. First, on Sunday March 9th, from 2 to 4 pm is our
Annual Passover Wine Sale with Men’s Club. Once again, Tom Paulik from Binny’s Beverage Depot and Lee
Dresner from Royal Wines will discuss a variety of Passover wines thath we will get to sample and order in
time for Passover. Add a little nosh, great camaraderie, and you have the perfect Sunday afternoon. A special
Wine Tasting invitation is extended to the parents of our Hebrew school children. Kadinkers and Kadima will
be going to Enchanted Castle on March 9 from noon to 4pm. All children from 2nd to 8th grade are invited to
join them. As the students will go straight from Hebrew school and will be back when the Wine Tasting is
over; we hope you will take advantage of this unique situation and join us at 2 pm for our Wine Tasting event.
On Wednesday March 19th, our very own Rabbi Lifshitz will be discussing “A Jew in Israel.” Please join us for
what is sure to be a very special evening. This event is open to everyone.
Please remember, this is your Sisterhood. We try to plan a wide variety of programs in hopes that everyone
will find something they like. If you don’t see it, please feel free to contact me to discuss an activity that you
would enjoy at [email protected].

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . .
If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth,
engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about
it so that this milestone can be included in The Word.
If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would
like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be
said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the
Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of
assistance.
If there is a death in your family, we would like to know
about it so that we can offer our support, can share this
information with our congregation, and so that we can
add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this information.
Do not assume that someone else will have notified the

Aliyah in Our 60’s – March 2014 - Part 23
Winter weather in our Caesarea home is similar to spring in Chicagoland. We haven’t had the required rain this
year; however, there has been enough to make everything green and blossoming. We wish we could send
some of the warmth to our friends at Beth Judea as we know it has been a brutally cold winter.
Recently there has been a great deal of publicity for SodaStream. When we moved to Israel, our daughter
introduced us to this machine that makes carbonated water out of tap water. The bottles are reused, and the
cylinders are recyclable. We usually just drink it plain, but many flavors can be added to make it taste like
popular soda drinks. It is healthy and eliminates many of the plastic bottles polluting our environment. There
are several SodaStream manufacturing plants in the US, and it is becoming more popular.
Two years ago one of our Tiyulim (day trips) included a tour of the SodaStream factory near the West Bank
settlement of Ma’ale Adumim. The CEO of SodaStream , Daniel Birnbaum, is the son of our rabbi emeritus,
Rabbi Irving Birnbaum, who plans our Tiyulim . We toured the manufacturing plant where they make the
cylinders and the soda making machines. This is one of twenty-five such facilities worldwide. At the Ma'ale
Adumin location there are 1,300 employees, of which 450 are Palestinians, 400 are Israeli Arabs, and the
remainder are Israeli Jews. The company provides an on-site mosque for the Muslims and a synagogue for
Jewish employees. They work side by side and share a common dining area. Employees are provided with
transportation to work, meals in their cafeteria, and Palestinians usually make four times what they could get
paid elsewhere in the West Bank. Our tour was during Chanukah so we did our candle lighting and had latkes
and sufganyiot at the conclusion. The Chanukia holding the candles was constructed with SodaStream
cylinders. We were each given a gift of a SodaStream machine.

SodaStream Photo
Tu B'Shevat was a time to plant trees and flowers in front
of our congregation. Yes, in January it was about 60
degrees. That afternoon we had a Tu B'Shevat seder with
almost 40 attendees.
This year SodaStream purchased Super Bowl advertising for the second time.
They got a great deal of publicity before the Super Bowl. Fox News made them
delete the end of the ad because it had a slam against Coke and Pepsi. The
“most beautiful” woman in the world, Scarlett Johansson, was the star of the ad,
and she is our hero. Scarlett was a representative for the world organization,
Oxfam that condemned her for associating with a company that Oxfam claims
contributes to the “denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to
support.” Scarlett Johansson is Jewish. At first she remained silent but then she
responded by resigning as Oxfam’s global ambassador due to a “fundamental
difference of opinion”. She stood up for the Jewish state against a ferocious
international assault and did not cave in to those who call for a boycott of goods
from the West Bank settlements. Johansson chose SodaStream over Oxfam,
explaining that the company employs Palestinians who work alongside Israelis.
They have the same benefits as Israeli employees. World studies have shown
that the unemployment Palestinians in the West bank is almost twenty-three
percent and is even higher in Gaza. If companies such as SodaStream are not
allowed to operate and employ Palestinians – how does this help the
Palestinians?
Our congregation, Bet Israel Netanya, continues to struggle with finances and membership- sound familiar? As
president, Howie sits on the Bima for all services. Last Shabbat, as Howie looked out on the members and guests
present, he realized that five people are age 90 or older.
Our congregation has been sponsoring incredible concerts in our sanctuary. A member devised a method of
covering the ark and stained glass windows to convert it into an auditorium and it is part of our fund raising efforts.
Howie was very happy to have participated in the World Wide Wrap at your synagogue. Norm Kurtz, Marc Sender, Orin Rotman, and others set up a Skype hook up. Our congregational wi-fi has been a problem, so Howie was at our home. In the future, we will have another Skype with Norm Kurtz, to explain the program before we show the video recording. Next year, our congregation will participate even though there is an eight hour time difference. It was good to see and hear so many people at Beth Judea.
For Purim, a huge holiday here, we are having a Kabbalat Shabbat dinner followed by a Purim Spiel. We will do a non-instrumental musical parody based on the songs of "My Fair Lady". We will let you know how it goes. Of course, we also have the Megillah reading.

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page)
Our monthly Tiyul in January was to Zichron Yaakov. Some of the
great locations in and around Zichron Yaakov to visit are The Nili
House, wineries, Ramat HaNadiv (one of the oldest Alyiah
synagogues in Israel) and the museum of the First Alyiah. On this
particular occasion, we visited the First Alyiah Museum and Ohel
Yaakov Synagogue. Ohel Yaakov Synagogue is one of the first
synagogues of modern Israel and is 120 years old. Shumel
Friedman, the colorful shamash of the synagogue, has a restaurant
very near the synagogue. He allowed us into the synagogue and
explained it’s history. The synagogue was constructed when the
Turks were in control and a synagogue would have been forbidden;
if a building had a roof on it, it would be too late for it to be
disallowed. The settlers tricked the Turks by making them believe
they were building a grain barn. They put the roof on in 24 hours, and
when the Turks discovered it was a synagogue it was too late,
according to their law, to prevent it. They were allowed to keep it and
that is why from the outside it appeared to be a grain barn. Today,
the synagogue continues to hold services every day and Shabbat.
Shumel related funny a story of when Baron de Rothschild visited the synagogue for the first time. He had
buttoned his vest incorrectly. So the residents, upon noticing this, incorrectly buttoned their vests so as to not
embarrass him. Some one in our group said, “It was a good thing he didn’t have his pants zipper open!”.
The first Alyiah, consisting of Romanians, dates back to 1882. They were mostly traders who knew little about
farming and growing things. By coming to Palestine, they had lost their Romanian citizenship and had no other
place to go if Palestine did not work out. When things looked the bleakest, Baron de Rothschild stepped in to
financially assist the pioneers. He was not a philanthropist but a banker. However, the Baron was interested in the
redemption of Israel. Unfortunately, many of the people who were sent as the Baron's representatives to help the
pioneers were bullies and snobs. They didn't understand the Romanian peasants or how to live off the harsh
Middle East land. However, they knew how to live well in villas while the Romanians lived in tents and huts.
The land they were attempting to live on was sold to them by a wealthy Christian Arab who lived in Haifa. One of
the requirements of the settlers, if they accepted the financial help of the Baron, was to sign over their land to the
Baron. The Baron wanted the location named after his father Jacob. It had been called Zammerin, and the
pioneers agreed and changed the name Zichron Yaakov. Baron de Rothschild and his wife are buried in the
beautiful Ramat Ha Nadiv nature park and gardens near Zichron Yaakov. The Baron also wanted the original
settlers' area for vineyards and wine making facilities.
During this period, many of the Romanians died due to malaria. There are hundreds of children’s graves in the
old cemetery of Zichron Yaakov. The settlers also had arguments about using Hebrew, French or Yiddish as the
spoken language. Eventually, Hebrew prevailed as the daily spoken language. One method they used to
encourage Hebrew required individuals to put money into a fund if they spoke a language besides Hebrew. The
money collected from these mistakes was spent on purchasing learning books in Hebrew. We think this would be
a good idea for us - we would probably have enough books to start a library.
Eventually, the settlers were moved to an area that is now the lovely pedestrian mall location. It looks a bit like
Long Grove Village and is where we often have lunch. When Mitch and Ann Lerman and Kitty and Bruce Hoffman
were here we attended a street festival there It was Pesach and Mitch enjoyed a kosher for Pesach Mc Donald’s
hamburger!

We continue to be so happily amazed at our
grandson Erez's emotional growth. He has PDD
(mild autism) but has become almost a “normal”
five year old. He is talkative and converses in
Hebrew and English. When his father, Dani, was
in the States for ten days, Erez talked to him and
out of nowhere said:
which means to be strong and healthy. We wish
you the same, and have a wonderful Purim. We
hope all of you can spend Purim in Israel some
day, where everyone dresses in costumes
including waiters, waitresses, clerks in stores,
bank employees, post office workers, and hospital
employees.
Hag Samayach!
Today, Zichron Yaakov is a beautiful village with over 18,000 residents. Vineyards and the Carmel and Tishbi
wineries are found around the community. It has a diverse religious community with Haredim, Modern
Orthodox, and one Masorti (Conservative) and one Reform synagogue. About twenty percent of the population
residing in Zichron Yaakov today come from English speaking countries.

In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue
by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well.
We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing.
Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions
expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
