SCU Event Information
PRISON VISIT On Friday April 6, the Criminal Law Society and the North-ern California Innocence Project will be co-sponsoring a tour of Salinas Valley State Prison, a maximum security facility. The tour starts at 12 and the prison is a little over an hour away so we will leave campus around 10. We expect to return to campus around 6. There are limited spaces so please respond soon if you are interested. To sign up, simply take a clearance form from David Richter's folder in Bannan Lounge (in the 2L section). Fill out the form and place it back in his folder. First come, first serve. The form requests some potentially confidential information. If you have any concerns about this please contact David directly at [email protected] and alternative arrangements can be made. Forms have to be in by March 26, but space is limited so sooner is better. Once you fill out a clearance form, you will also need to complete a participant agree-ment form for the university. INTERESTED IN PUBLIC INTEREST LAW?
LCS is now accepting applications for its Public In-terest Career Coordinator positions
Number of positions: 2 Salary: $12.00/hr Hours: 10-15 hours/wk during the 2007-
08 academic year. Duties of the Position: Under the direction of the Assistant Dean and as a mem-ber of the Law Career Services team, each Coordinator develops public interest/public sector career resources and accomplishes the following, among other responsi-bilities: Design and implement appropriate career-related pro-
gramming. Organize and manage the annual Public Interest Career Fair.
Coordinate Santa Clara’s participation in Public Interest/Public Sector Day. Oversee the law school’s Pro Bono Recognition Program and Pro Bono Luncheon.
Advertise volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the Pro Bono Recognition Program. Maintain and dis-seminate current public interest/public sector career and fellowship information. Contribute to the PILCS website.
Advise students regarding resumes and cover letters for public interest/public sector jobs. Serve as the Law Career Services liaison with related departments.

AIPLEF AWARDS The school can nominate one student to compete for various national awards administered by the American Intellection Property Law Educa-tion Foundation, including the prestigious Jan Jancin Award with a cash prize of $5,000. ABA-BNA EXCELLENCE IN IP AWARDS The school can designate up to six students as winners of the ABA/BNA Award for Excellence in the Study of Intellectual Property Law, administered by the American Bar Association's Section of Intellectual Property Law and The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. NATHAN BURKAN COMPETITION This competition is open to any unpublished paper (less than 50 pages long) by a 2L, 3L or 4L on “any aspect of copyright law.” The school can select up to two winners to receive $600 and $250, respectively. HOW TO APPLY * To apply for the AIPLEF and ABA-BNA awards, submit your current resume and transcript to Prof. Eric Goldman (Bergin 206) by April 30th. * To apply for the Nathan Burkan competition, submit your paper to Prof. Eric Goldman (Bergin 206) by April 30th. As explained on the ASCAP website, the competition has very detailed rules about paper format and length. The paper you submit to Prof. Goldman must comply strictly with those rules. Mr. Leavitt represents health plans, health care providers and other business entities in a variety of liti-gation and regulatory matters involving managed care liability, commercial litigation, professional license revo-cation and employment law. He represents clients in both state and federal court, and before state and fed-eral regulatory and licensing agencies. Mr. Leavitt has tried more than 100 administrative and civil trials.
Mr. Leavitt’s prior experience includes being As-
sistant Chief Counsel with the California Department of Managed Health Care and a senior counsel with the California Department of Personnel Administration. While with the Department of Managed Health Care he supervised the Department’s regulatory and legislation units and defended the Department in litigation. Prior to working for the state of California, he spent six years with a civil litigation law firm doing labor and employ-ment law and civil rights litigation.
