This 1940s-inspired conceptual shoot is such a
feast for the eyes. We love every detail, including
the Coke bottles, flowers, and how the pretty
calligraphy tags adorned the whole place. One can
sit here for hours and not want the day to end.
“For Coca Cola lovers, we decided to create a
beverage station featuring Coke, Diet Coke and
Cherry Coke, and pair them with cherries, lemons
and lime to go with the picnic menu. For the main
table, we had a picnic-style table and chairs with
a green and white gingham runner. The beautiful
floral arrangements were placed in vintage tins.
“The typewriter was for the guests to leave love
notes to the newlyweds. The notes were put
into a vintage mailbox and mailed to the couple
after the wedding. As for the cake, everything,
from the vintage basket weave to the vintage
cake topper and cake itself, was a treat.”

On a chilly autumn day, at the edge of
Grose Valley in Blackheath, the scenery made
for a truly breathtaking backdrop for the perfect
wedding. The ceremony was held at Aggie Pines
Park, situated within Allview Escape. The décor
and all the details had been put together by
the bridal couple’s family and friends the day
before the wedding. Some of the guests had
even flown in from the Philippines to celebrate
with them and witness these two very special
individuals exchange personalised vows. The
bride confessed that she braved the cool
temperatures because she loved her gown too
much to have it covered up by a jacket.

Rustic chic“I’ve always loved peach and vintage so we just
played with both. We ended up with peach,
blush and grey as our colours. And then it all
became like, rustic chic, which was perfect for
the outdoor ceremony. To match the theme, we
had laser-cut invitations from Etsy.
“As a wedding planner myself, I wanted my
wedding to be nothing less than perfect. most
of our things were DIy, like the felt escort tags,
photobooth and confetti bags. We even bought
an Instax camera so guests could take home
Polaroid pictures of themselves, leaving another
copy for us.”

The wedding reception was held in a larger
house, and was cosy and fun with 40 guests.
Two of the couple’s closest friends played hosts
for the night. It was a day filled with love and
friendship. Simple, sweet and beautiful, exactly
how the newlyweds wanted it to be.

Paper Planes “We had a travel and nature theme, as our
whole relationship has been a long-distance
one. Jason lived in Sydney while I lived in Dubai.
I was a flight attendant and so I traveled a lot.
Jason would fly around to see me in the cities
where I had stopovers, meeting me whenever
and wherever he could.
“Our save-the-dates for the wedding were flight
boarding passes, wedding invitations were paper
planes, and favours were luggage tags that our
guests can actually use. We are also very earthy
and green people, and that’s why we chose the
colour green for our theme.”

regine and Joey had a garden wedding
decorated with coloured streamers and lovely
details. They are not your typical bridal couple
– these two, both of whom are from creative
industries, wanted to have a wedding their way.
And so they did.
Instead of regular bouquets, the bridesmaids
walked down the aisle with chalkboards bearing
messages the girls had written. It was like their
final warning to the groom!
The thoughtful couple even made the programme
and song sheets functional by printing them
onto hand-fans, just in case it got a bit humid in
the garden. But the weather was perfect and they
had a very simple yet heart-warming ceremony
before proceeding to dinner in the ballroom.

Regine is an executive producer while Joey is a creative director.
We love the little details from their wedding. But this video,
which was praised by many, deserves more attention. We
got the bride to tell us a bit about what transpired behind the
incredible photoshoot.
Where did you get the idea and inspiration for this pre-wedding
photoshoot? We only started thinking about it two months prior to
our wedding. One day, Joey came back with a concept of how he
wanted to do it. He started discussing it with Julian, a photographer
friend. Of course the idea has changed a little along the way since we
started.
How long did you take to prepare, draw and shoot this? Julian bought
a long roll of black canvas for the five scenes we initially planned,
and some chalk. Our outfits weren’t planned either. It was pretty
impromptu. Julian also printed some references and the boys drew
freehand. We ended up with only three scenes; it was more tiring than
we thought! We weren’t exactly laying flat on the ground. It felt like an
intense core workout!
How do you feel about the result? We both like it very much! Boyd,
another friend, compiled the final photos with the footage he shot
during the photoshoot. Neither of us saw the video until it was played
during our wedding reception. So it was equally surprising for us, and
we appreciate the result even more. But as much as we both love it,
we will never do it again [laughs].

He is a radio announcer,
TV host and actor,
while she is a hospital
pharmacist. For Bernard
and Jo Lin, their video
was an opportunity “to be
constantly reminded of the
values that keep us together
and the things we love about
each other”. Having dated for
3.5 years, this good-looking
couple knows their lives together
are only just beginning, so they
created this unique, sweet video
to carry them through the many,
many more years to come.
Who came up with the idea?
Bernard: We sat down with
our director a few times, going
through idea after idea. Then
one day, Jo Lin brought up the
first scene of (the TV series)
‘How I met your mother’, where
the main character talks to his
children about their mother. We
thought it was a brilliant idea!
The director felt it would be
more personal if we spoke to
ourselves instead.
How long did it take to shoot this?
B: It took us about two days to set
up and shoot this video. In it, you
will also see me recording some
of the clips that I send to Jo Lin
whenever I’m away.
Bernard, as an actor it must be
easy for you to be in front of the
camera, but what about you, Jo Lin?
B: I didn’t want to act in this video;
that was the hard part.
Jo Lin: I was just being myself in
most of the scenes. But it was a
challenge when I had to look into
the camera and speak to myself. I
felt really awkward.
How do you both feel about the
final result?
B: We’re happy with it. We will
make it a point to watch it on our
anniversaries. Perhaps we will make
our kids watch it too! [Laughs]
Tip! Find a director that you can
communicate with and who
understands both of you. Don’t
worry about entertaining or
impressing your guests. It’s your
video – make sure it speaks to you!

We love it when
photographers explore
new things, push
the boundaries of
photography and show us
the great possibilities that surround
us. This isn’t Avex’s first paper bridal
gown attempt; he did a similar project
in 2010. But this time, armed with
better skills and a beautiful venue,
the results were stunning!
How did the concept of a paper
bridal gown come about? Wedding
gowns have a seemingly magical
power to transform an ordinary
woman into the most gorgeous
bride. We wanted an avant-garde
and unique gown that would make
a bride stand out, something
whimsical, refreshing and different
from ordinary wedding gowns, and
that’s when we thought of using
paper as a medium.
Why newspapers? Newspapers
can be easily styled into different
shapes, and we love the wrinkled
texture they give when you crumple
them. When seen from afar,
newspapers exude a wonderfully
nostalgic feel. most importantly,

Real creativity is when someone
uses ordinary things to create
something extraordinary
they are cheap, environmentally
friendly and readily available.
How did you make this paper gown?
First, we had to carefully select our
newspapers, avoiding pages with
and tape. The next thing to do was
stapling the newspapers, piece by
piece, onto this base. Lastly, we
crumpled some of the pieces to
create more texture and also to make
it more 3D. The whole process took
around four hours.
How did your model put on
the gown? The gown was actually
designed as a two-piece. It has a
strapless, sleeveless bodice and a
tiered and trained skirt. She had to
put on the bodice before she stepped
into the base structure that was
the skirt.
What were the challenges of
making the gown and shooting it?
We underestimated the weight of
the newspapers. They actually get
really heavy when layered and bound
together. Our bodice tore because it
could not support the heavy bottom
piece, so we had to figure out ways
to patch it up and further strengthen
both the bodice and the skirt. As for
the shoot, the newspapers got a bit
rough and stiff, and the model had to
work with that. To prevent the dress
from falling apart, we had staples
on standby.
vivid colours as those would not
work well with the overall palette
we had in mind. Then, we made a
base for the gown with newspapers

What inspires your photography?
As cheesy as this may sound, love.
Love inspires my work. It’s not
just about the love between two
people, but also familial love,
friendship love, even people who
are passionate about what they do.
What are your other interests
besides photography? When I’m
not working, I like to workout. I lift
weights and do Crossfit, jog at the
park, do indoor climbing, and hike if
time permits. When the opportunity
arises, I also love to travel, be it
around malaysia or overseas. Being
away from Kuala Lumpur is the only
time I really take a break from work.
If you could live in any country in
the world for a month, where would
it be and why? I’d say New Zealand
for its great outdoors.
What’s a favourite photo of yours,
and why? There are quite a lot
actually. Here’s a recent one that
I particularly like – not only are the
newlyweds obviously joyful about
their union, but you can see that
their family members and close
friends are too. At the end of
the day, for me, a wedding is
a celebration not only between
two persons but also with their
loved ones.
“BE IN LOvE WITH YOUR LIFE, EvERY MINUTE OF IT”

What’s one thing every photographer
cannot do without? Coffee. Just
kidding… I think. Jokes aside, amongst
the many things that a photographer
needs in running a business, the one
thing that would be rather useful is
common sense. The common sense to
understand that it’s not only about taking
photos, to set the right expectations for
their clients, and to continue learning
and improving even though one has
been a photographer for years.
Describe yourself in three words.
Jovial, driven, positive.
