How did he propose?His parents had planned a graduation party in honor of Grant’s graduation from nursing school at their home. During the festivities, his tiny nieces came by me wearing decorated t-shirts. The first one had a shirt that read “Will you” and the second girl’s shirt said “Marry”. Actually, I was not paying attention and had to be told to read their shirts. I still didn’t get it, until Grant came in with a shirt that said “Me?” and a ring! I was totally surprised! Happily, I said “Yes!”.

Did you have a theme to your wedding?I wanted the wedding to have somewhat of a vintage feel to it. I used lots of lace accents, along with birdcages and hot pink rose petals. My Mom was so helpful in making many of the accent pieces and décor. The guys wore suspenders and bowties, too.

What kind of flowers did you carry?I found a bouquet on Pinterest that I loved and my florist did a wonderful job….it was exactly as I had hoped. It was a beautiful combination of hot pink roses, pink wax flowers, pink tulips, exotic white orchids and Italian greenery.

What song did you first dance to at the reception?The Way I Am by Ingrid Michealson. Grant and I thought the lyrics describe us perfectly. After our song, dancing evolved into some pretty crazy, fun stuff!

Any special memories that you have to share?After the wedding and later that night, Grant referred to me as his wife. At that moment, it was like, “Wow, this is all real. I have married the man of my dreams”.

To complement the couple’s dramatic color palette of black and pink, the bridesmaids

wore flowing black floor length gowns accented with rhinestone and chiffon belts.

Maddison chose a strapless bridal ball gown with many volumous layers trailing

behind to form a bouffant, tufted train. The fitted bodice of the gown had intricate

beading and imported lace detailing.

The flowers took many forms at this outdoor wedding. The choices were simple yet

stunning arrangements of hot pinks, creamy whites and soft pink roses with greenery

for accents. The bride’s bouquet was a gorgeous cluster of soft pink peonies, white

anemones and white roses.


The wedding and location seemed to be the perfect mix of natural elements and

traditional elements. The ceremony was held at a local vineyard where guests

gathered beneath a canopy of pines. The bride and groom walked a path strewn

with rose petals to take their vows. Yards and yards of sheer white fabric were

draped and tied back with tiny, hot pink buds and greenery to form an altar. A small,

vintage crystal chandelier added to the charm.

Guests adjourned to the covered reception area to enjoy an evening of cocktails

and dining. Tables were beautifully decorated in black and white tablecloths and

tall, elegant floral arrangements further added to the vintage, romantic ambiance.


The cake was an artistic design chosen by the bride and was adorned with flowers

reminiscent of the bridal bouquet.

Your lighting specialist can provide you with endless ways to create mood and ambiance. Seth Stevenson, of IES (innovative event solutions), is a lighting expert and has some ideas to help you make decisions and get the WOW factor you are looking to achieve. He suggests that you

consider lighting your wedding cake, centerpieces, ice sculptors and floral arrangements so they don’t fade away when the lights are dimmed. Computerized images and monograms on the dance floor are very popular and add interest and movement. Walls bathed in uplighting and lighted furniture cubes are also popular for color pizzazz and fun. Experienced lighting experts will also have knowledge about safety, such as voltage overload, proper extension cords, and walkway hazards. They also have expertise regarding candles and the fire safety knowledge that is necessary to protect you and your guests.

Christie Conyer, of Christie Conyer Photography, also appreciates all the special effects and color of specialty lighting. But, she suggests, you discuss the color choices with your photographer to avoid lighting choices that do not photograph well. Christie says that she can use filters to help color correct, but a photographer will appreciate being in the loop so they can be prepared.

Seth says that hiring a professional will ensure success. He says that “Brides want the WOW factor and that’s what a lighting specialist will deliver.”

Micheal and I selected a rustic cabin in the Carolinas as the setting for our small, intimate wedding with just our family and a few close friends. We did the entire wedding at the cabin and our guests stayed with us, so we planned everything ourselves. This was the most stressful part and it helped that we had tons of friends helping and I had everything really organized and planned out. Make lists, list, lists!!!

Since we had a destination wedding, I suggest you and your fiancé travel to the location to get a feel for it. Take this opportunity to find your wedding cake, caterer and find accommodations for your guests. Wrap up any loose ends to put your mind at ease.

One bit of advice I would pass along is to make the wedding represent you and your fiancé. It is awesome how amazing the day can be when you stay true to who you are and the type of style you want. We wanted it to be really laid back and relaxed but still incorporate a southern, rustic feel.

Also, use Pinterest to gather your ideas and create a wedding board. I pinned all of my favorite things from various magazines, blogs, websites, etc. to my board. It was a perfect way to see my theme come together!

My photographer, Amanda Zabrocki, is the most amazing wedding photographer. Your photographer is so important. Choose wisely.

Food at your reception can be full of fun and unusual choices. We went with a totally southern menu -- sweet potato salad, corn bread, shrimp and cheese grits, fried green tomatoes, chicken fingers -- all fun and delicious! We had a yummy lemonade specialty drink made with Sweet Tea vodka.

Our wedding was the best day of my life. It was perfect with our family and closest friends all around us for the wedding and the entire weekend.

Our wedding represented Michael and me and we were able to enjoy every minute of it. Our style wedding might not be for everyone, but it was perfect for us!
