Trump then said he had set his administration’s course toward a focus on tax reform. Given the complexities of the factions among the Republicans and quite different dynamics among Democrats, tax reform may prove even more nettlesome than health care reform. Just to cite one element, Trump campaigned hard against any change in Social Security and Medicare. Ryan and company have shown themselves just as dead set on raising retirement age and also on weakening Medicare. Well, at least, I now was thinking, they’ve put the health care debate on hold and the focus has shifted. Alas, no. Trump’s hard-right senior counselor, Stephen Bannon, he of the rumpled look, popped into the media spotlight with a rare public statement of his own. He said the White House was “not finished with health care” and would make another try. Within days Ryan, too, was touting the idea of another go at health care reform. He was joined in the media glare by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, one of the most fer- vent advocates of torpedoing Obamacare, which he, Trump, Ryan and other GOPers agree in calling “a disaster.” The problem with Ryan’s bill was, among other things, that it would have ultimately thrown 24 million Americans off of the health care protection they had achieved under Obama’s reform. And it would also have represented a huge tax break for the very rich - at the expense of Trump’s own white working-class voters and the poor. Spin as they might, Trump and Ryan could not sell that to the country as a positive. Another quick-fix GOP bill on health care? Not a chance. John Patrick Grace formerly covered healthcare for The Greensboro (N.C.) News and Record. He is now a book editor and publisher based in Huntington. U.S. His lack of friendliness and hospitality to Angela Merkel (refusing to shake her hand) was shameful diplomacy. Now, it appears that the president’s choice for the U.S. Supreme Court may be turned aside. Democrats are not anxious to approve a lifetime appointment to the court from a part-time, ineffectual and “unfit” - and possibly short-term - man in the Oval Office. Shall we mark time until the administration “implodes?” At this rate, I give the president six months before he is finished - resignation or impeachment. We need an independent, non-partisan special prosecutor with an investigative committee to subpoena the president and place him under oath to answer questions we have about his finances and his foreign entanglements. For him to lie under oath would be the final straw. Milt Hankins is a theologian, former pastor and local author. His website is columnistwithaview.com. FINANCING A FUNERALOne way to pay for a funeral is to prefund it with a “payable on death”account (or “Totten trust”) at a bank or credit union. With this account, the owner names a beneficiary, who inherits the funds of the accountwhen the account owner dies. These popular accounts provide a way toeffectively transfer money upon death without undergoing probate courtproceedings. There are also “pre-need” plans offered by funeral homes thatcan be used to lock in some or all of the cost of a funeral at current prices. In some cases, the consumer must purchase an insurance policy with thefuneral home named as beneficiary or the money must be held in a state-managed trust account.
