November is traditionally the month that we have set aside in this country to

give thanks for all the great things that this nation has brought us. We have

the opportunity to pursue the profession of our choice, live where we would

like to, travel about the country, and have a family of as many children as we can afford. Edu-

cation opportunities abound, hobbies of all different types exist and can be freely pursued. I

hope all of you have the opportunity to share with your family and friends at this time of the

year.

On the club side of this message the November and December general meetings are of great

importance. The club holds our nominations and election of officers for 2012. Please consider

taking a position in one of these positions. We can always use new ideas. We will need to have

nominations for President, Secretary and one board member.

WACOM is expanding in a variety of directions and will need more members to take over the

various activities. Bill NY9H has done a fantastic job of heading up the education committee.

With the addition of the general class, it offers our club members a path to enhance the enjoy-

ment of the hobby by upgrading their license class. That is just one example of how club mem-

bers are coming forward and helping the organization. This has been a very good year for the

club and with the additional membership we have been enjoying over the last several years I

can only see great things on the horizon for the club.

This was a great year for the PA QSO Contest that I will never forget; it started with an idea from Wiley

WD8W.

Wiley approached me and asked if we could put together again a RHOMBIC wire antenna at my QTH

for the event. I said sure, but this time with a little research we made some changes.

After 840 feet of wire 2 trees a 40Ft. pole and a Corner of my house for support a 300 OHM TERMINAT-

ING RESISTOR a 24 TO 1 BALUN. I have to say we all were impressed on how well it did. An amazing

antenna for the low bands and we worked all but 4 counties in Pennsylvania with only 100 watts usually

on the first call we were acknowledged.

Never let it be said that amateur radio operators are short on imagination .Thanks to WD8W I have be-

gun plans for a full time RHOMBIC at my QTH in the spring.

New antennas at the WA3WZR Amateur Radio Station

The vertical in the right side of the photo is my old reliable Joystick.

On the shed roof are my three new rotatable dipoles turned by an old CDE Ham II rotor On top of the stack is a 40m dipole I designed and am experimenting with.

The dipole in closest in the photo is a Mosley TW-31-XL for the WARC bands (30-17-12) The last one is a Mosley TA-31-M for 20-15-10m

I would like to thank club members Bud, (N3TIR), Bill (NY9H), Joe (WA3WMB) and Sue (KB3TAJ) and of course my wife Sue (non-ham) for helping with my new antennas!

As many of you know, I have lived in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota for the past seven years and am planning on finally

getting a station built in order to further open this highly sought state and grid square (DN-83) on both the HF and VHF bands.

Unfortunately, we also frequently get some serious thunderstorms in these parts which can dump large amounts of rain, golf ball-

sized hail, and create very dangerous lightning! This is obviously a threat that must always be taken into consideration when build-

ing an amateur radio station!

With that in mind, I designed a ‗Ham Radio Protection Panel‘ as a two stage lightning protection and filter board. Each antenna

and/or band will have two arrestors installed on it. This large panel is 24‖ x 24‖ in size. The primary arrestors are constant drain

ICE devices which provide a constant drain of any static charges that may build up on the antenna. It also possesses a gas tube

which will activate during periods of high static charges. In addition to the primary arrestor, I also installed a low cost secondary

arrestor as a backup device should the primary arrestor ever fail.

The HF/VHF filters have been installed to provide filtering of any out of band emissions that may cause interference to home

electronics. I feel it is important to maintain good relations with the neighborhood by filtering my transmissions. The board is also

equipped with rotor and remote switch protection. By combining everything on one panel it provides a single ground point and

places your arrestors close to your ground rods. This is very important provides a low resistance path to ground!

Grounding of the Panel will consist of three eight-foot ground rods with a radial system to add additional ground rods in a V

shape behind the three primary rods if necessary. The two end ground rods will have wide copper strap running from the panel to

the rod to provide a low impedance RF ground. The center rod will be grounded with 4/0 copper cable to provide a high current

DC ground should I take a direct hit to my station. In order to increase soil conductivity I have spread a fertilizer known as

―Ironite‖. In addition to the iron, it has a high content of many different trace minerals and is water soluble. It works better than

salt and greens the grass too! Try it around a ground mounted vertical and you most likely will not need radials [just frequent lawn

mowing! -ed.].

To make up for any insertion loss, I used high quality low loss UHF coax cable and N-connectors on the higher bands. This will

negate any loss from the additional arrestor. Please note that this panel is still under construction so the photos are not showing a

completed panel, refer to the diagram below for reference on the finished product.

Details of Ham Radio Panel 24’’x24’’

1. The top left side of the panel is the HF Radio circuit. It has an ICE 8KW primary arrestor followed by a lower cost Alpha-

Delta 2KW secondary arrestor. The filter is an ICE 8KW DC-30MHZ which can handle enough power to allow the use

of a linear amplifier. I will also be installing a 300W filter with a 30 MHZ cutoff at the input of the linier to attenuate any

spurious emissions prior to amplification. Then the 8KW filter on the panel will also attenuate any out of band signals

after amplification. I plan on running the HF output of my Kenwood TS-690 and Bandit 2000 Amplifier through this

circuit.

2. Below, is the 6 Meter circuit. It consists of an ICE 8KW Primary arrestor, followed by an Alpha Delta 2KW secondary

arrestor. It also incorporates a high power DC-54 MHz filter rated at 3 KW to reduce and out of band emissions. I de-

signed the panel for adding a linear amplifier in the future. It too will be filtered at both the input and output once I find

a 6 meter amp. Until then I will be running the 6 meter output of my TS-690 at 50 watts through this circuit. In addition,

I have 8 vintage 6 meter radios from Heathkit, Gonset, Clegg, and Knight to run on this circuit. Each vintage radio has

an additional 250W 6 meter band pass filter bolted on the back and attached to the radio output for additional attenua-

tion. Early 6 meter radios were known as TVI generators, so it is best to place a filter and bolt it directly to the radio.

3. This next circuit down is for my barebones Kenwood TS-680 HF/6meter radio. It will put out 100 watts of HF and 10 watts

on 6 meters. It consists of an ICE 8KW Primary Arrestor, followed by a low cost 400 watt MFJ secondary arrestor. The

filter is a 300 watt DC-54MHz filter and includes both HF and 6 meter band coverage.

4. The fourth circuit is for my CB radio (yes, I actually own one) - I it use occasionally to talk to a couple friends who are not

hams (honest!). It consists of an ICE 1KW Primary Arrestor, followed by a 400 watt MFJ secondary arrestor. The filter is

an ICE Bandpass Filter that will cut off everything above and below the CB band. I will be running a 1970‘s SBE radio

through this circuit at 4 watts AM or 12 watts SSB (Legal Limit) In addition ,I have some late 50‘s and early 60‘s Gonset,

Heathkit, Eico, and Hallicrafters CB radios that I am re-capping and I hope to have this vintage gear on the air soon.

5. In the bottom left corner you will see 4 ICE Rotor/ Switch protectors. These are spliced in along the control cable between

the control ―C‖ and the remote box ―B‖ as illustrated on the diagram. One is rated at 50 volts and will work with my 40

volt Rotor. The other 3 are rated at 20 volt for my Ameritron remote switch boxes. They use a 14vot control voltage and

should work out just fine.

6. On the right side of the panel are all my VHF/UHF circuits. The top right is for my 2 meter radio. It consists of an ICE

1KW primary arrestor, an MFJ secondary arrestor, and a 2 meter Bandpass Filter (MFJ arrestor and ICE Filter to be added

later) I will be running both modern SSB equipment and 3 vintage Gonset and Clegg AM radios through this circuit at 160

watts max. I have SSB/FM beams and omni‘s on this circuit.

7. The next one down is for my dual band 2m/440 FM radio. This will go through a Cuscraft Ringo for local FM communica-

tion. It also has an ICE 1 KW primary arrestor and a low cost 400 watt MFJ secondary arrestor (not attached yet)

8. The third one down of the right is for my future 220 FM radio. I decided to build my shack around the panel, which allows for

simple upgrades and additions. Just add a radio and antenna and I am ready to go. The only 220 radio I have is a 220 Gonset

AM rig from the 1960s (I have yet to make a contact or find anyone on 220 AM!). I also used a 1KW primary arrestor and

will have a 400 watt arrestor as a secondary device for this band.

9. The fourth one down on the right is for my 440 radio. I can run both FM and SSB on this band at 20 watts from my Yaesu FT

-857. It uses an ICE 1 KW primary arrestor, followed by an MFJ 400 watt secondary arrestor. The Ameritron remote

switch will allow me to select different antennas for the correct mode.

10. The fifth one down is for my GMRS base station (Callsign: WQKF423). It has an ICE 1KW arrestor, and will be followed by

the 400 watts MFJ secondary. Base stations are limited to 5 watts ERP output (50 watts mobile) on GMRS and a unity gain

antenna with a height restriction not to exceed 20 feet above the house. I use this to communicate with my wife to and from

work since she is not a ham. The nice thing about GMRS is once you get a license, family members can use it under your

license call and you do not have to be present. I guess you can call it a family license.

11. Finally, the last arrestor is for SWL/VLF/AM broadcast listening. I have many vintage radios from the 1920s through the

1960‘s that will use this receiving antenna. It uses an ICE primary arrestor and the MFJ secondary arrestor just like the TX

circuits.

I still have room to add two more circuits on the panel in the future if I need too. Before you start, let me say that the cost of building

this panel is over $1,600.00!! You need to weigh the cost of your equipment verses the cost of building a 2 stage panel. With over 32

radios, mostly vintage that I spent many months rebuilding, the benefits outweigh the cost.

When thinking about protecting your equipment, do not forget 3 other areas in your home to protect.

-Install a whole house surge protector on you main circuit breaker box where the surge enters your home. Also place a secondary

AC surge protector (plug-in type) on your equipment in the shack.

-Do not forget the telephone line. I have a Phone arrestor located in a box outside the house to prevent any surges from entering

the house and a secondary one inside the house.

-Entertainment equipment: stereos, TV, satellite systems need protected too. I built a 12x12 panel that has ICE arrestors on all

of the above equipment listed above. It is mounted in an enclosure outside.

I hope you find this information useful! If you need any information on where to obtain the same components to build your own

panel, drop me a line! 73, David—KD3RZ
