It’s hard to believe that the Alpha Delta State Convention is just a month away. Many hands are working diligently to make this convention and 75th Anniver-sary Celebration an incredible experience for all who attend. We are pleased to have Dr. Lace Marie Brogden, the Northwest Regional Director, as our international guest for the convention. The convention is April 12-14, at the Hilton Hotel at Easton in Columbus. Attending the state convention will be an opportunity for you to experience Delta Kappa Gamma be-yond the chapter level. Registration forms are available on the Alpha Delta State website, and in the January issue of The Voice. The Ohio State House Tour will take place Friday afternoon prior to the con- vention. Then the convention will begin with the Friday night reception, followed by the Executive Board meeting. Saturday will be filled with meetings, workshops, initia-tion of an honorary state member and chapter members, the Agora, the Info Fair, Gold Key awards, chapter photo display and the birthday luncheon. The evening will be extraordinary with our Presidents’ Banquet when chapter presidents are in the spot-light, and the state officers for the 2013-2015 biennium are installed. You will have the opportunity to greet the new officers following the banquet. Sunday morning we will gather for the Ceremony of Remembrance honoring our sisters who have passed away during the past year. Before heading home, members will be inspired by our own Charlotte Shrider at the Inspirational Breakfast. This convention will be incredible if YOU are there. Please bring your chapter members, enjoy marvelous fellowship, and make memories while we Honor Our Past and Build Our Future! Although the biennium is quickly coming to a close, there are still several great opportunities for Alpha Delta State members. On Monday, May 20, 2013, interested members will meet at the Ohio School Boards Association headquarters for Legisla-tive Day planned by Joyce St. Clair, Legislative Advocate. Members can also look forward to the First Capital Biennial Seminar June 18, 19, 20, 2013, in Chillicothe. Diana McFadden and Cathy Adams have planned an exceptional seminar including a variety of activities and sightseeing trips in Chillicothe, the first capital of Ohio. The Biennial Seminar is a time for great fun, fellowship, and learning! Please look for the information and registration forms for both the Biennial Seminar and Legislative Day in this issue of The Voice and on the Alpha Delta State website. Please let me or members of the state leadership team know how we can help and support both you and your chapter. We are always pleased to hear from our members, and are always willing to help or answer questions. My membership in ΔΚΓ is a very special because of the many remarkable members in Ohio. It is an honor to serve as your president. I look forward to seeing you in Columbus at the 75th Anniversary State Convention April 12-14, 2013! Fondly,

HONORING OUR PAST — BUILDING OUR FUTURE Dr. Norma Kirby, State President

Judge Hammond to be Alpha Delta State’s Newest Honorary Member

Those of you who attended the 2012 Al-pha Delta State Convention will remem-ber Judge Nancy D. Hammond who de-lighted us with her message at the birth-day luncheon. We not only enjoyed her humor, but also appreciated her support for educators, education and children. Judge Hammond so impressed members that she was nominated and approved for state honorary membership.

Judge Nancy Drake Hammond is a lifelong Ohio resident, born and reared in Lebanon. She earned her B.A. in history from Ohio University and her J.D. from the Ohio State University. She has been admitted to practice before the Ohio Bar, the United States District Court–Southern District of Ohio and the United States Supreme Court. Residing in Fayette County, Judge Hammond is married to Robert, a local attorney;; they have two grown sons both of whom are educators. Having served four terms as the Judge of the Probate and Juvenile Divi-sions of the Fayette County Court of Common Pleas, Judge Hammond current-ly serves as a Visiting Judge in the Fayette County Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile, Probate, General, and Domestic Relations Divisions. In addition to serving as a Judge, she was in private practice, worked on the Board of Arbitrators for Alcoa Alumi-num, has been an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton and Southern State General and Technical College, served as an Assistance Prosecutor in Xenia City and Green County, was a Public Defend-er in Green County, served on the Board of Veterans Appeals in Washington,

D.C., and was a staff attorney for the Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Judge Hammond is active in a num-ber of professional and civic organiza-tions: the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judg-es where she served as president, the Ohio Association of Probate Court Judg-es, and has served in many capacities for the Ohio Judicial Conference. In her community Judge Hammond is a member of the Chamber of Com-merce;; Altrusa International;; AAUW;; Grace United Methodist Church;; Adviso-ry Committee, Sinclair College;; Fayette County Commission on Aging Board;; and Family and Children First Counsel, past president. Judge Hammond is an advocate and true friend to education and a champion for educators. As juvenile judge, she worked closely with school personnel, and was instrumental in the organization and operation of the Fayette County Al-ternative School, a model for other alter-native schools in Ohio. The Initiation Ceremony for Judge Nancy D. Hammond will precede the Birthday Luncheon on Saturday, April 13, at the State Convention.

Charlotte Shrider

Members who attend the Sunday morning Inspirational Breakfast at the State Con-vention are in for a treat! Our own Char-lotte Shrider will be sharing her wit and wisdom as she brings us the inspirational message. Charlotte will remind us that as members of Delta Kappa Gamma we have first-class seats on regularly sched-uled flights into a mostly untouched realm of unlimited opportunities, refresh-ing perspectives, and wonderful friend-ships. After seventy-five years we have even more opportunities to soar together than ever before. All seats are window seats providing every member memories to last a lifetime! Charlotte and her husband are the proud parents of two lovely daughters and five delightful grandchildren. Charlotte is retiring at the end of this year after forty years of service with thirty-eight of those years in Northeastern Local Schools in Defiance County. Charlotte spent most of

her career as a first or second grade teach-er. The last eight years, she has been the intervention specialist for kindergarten and first grade. Among other extras, she has directed the Grandparents Day pro-gram for many years. She was also a pi-ano teacher for more than twenty years. After a hiatus from teaching piano, Char-lotte will resume giving lessons this com-ing fall. Charlotte serves as the organist and financial secretary at Malinta United Methodist Church, and also sings in the church choir. Many of you will recognize Charlotte from her work for Alpha Delta State. In Beta Zeta Chapter, Charlotte has been first vice-president and president and has chaired numerous committees. At the state level, Charlotte has been Music Representative, Nominations Committee member, chairman of the Professional Affairs Committee, Convention Coordi-nator, Biennial Seminar Coordinator,

Leadership Development Committee Chairman, and currently serves as the Gold Key Coordinator. Charlotte’s presentation is certain to be a highlight of the 75th Anniversary Celebration!

“Sandy” tormented the Northeastern States and left devastation in her wake. Many thanks to the Delta Kappa Gamma members who have offered support and have contributed to the Emergency Fund. When one of us is affected by life’s trau-mas, we are all affected. Our members have also rallied around Connecticut during its traumatic events. Sincere appreciation to those who have offered prayers and support to our members, our fellow colleagues, and most certainly the children and families in Newtown, Connecticut.

All registrants at the Spring Convention General Session will have the opportunity to vote on the dues increase recommended by the Finance Committee. Alpha Delta State has been unable to achieve a balanced budget for quite some time and the reserve funds are being eroded each fiscal year despite efforts to reduce expenses. Since the last dues increase in 1985, the buying power of the $7.00 State dues has been reduced by more than half and the ADS membership, the source of dues, has decreased by about 40 percent. It is the recommendation of the Finance Committee that State dues be raised from $7.00 to $10.00 for active members and from $3.00 to $5.00 for reserve members be-ginning with the Fall 2013 dues collection. This modest increase barely allows for a balanced budget. The Finance Committee and Treasurer have prepared two proposed 2013-2014 budgets, one for income and expenses if dues remain at the current level and one for the recommended dues increase. These two budgets are shown side by side along with actual budgets for the previous three fiscal years and have been mailed to your chapter presidents. It is the hope of the Finance Committee that you will give careful consideration to the needs of Alpha Delta State. None of us care to increase our personal expenditures and yet ADS needs additional funds in order to continue to be an effective State organ-ization assisting you in serving your Chapter needs. Finance Committee: Patricia Eshbaugh, Beta Psi;; Pam Feick, Alpha Delta;; Con-nie Fleming, Alpha Tau;; Annie Roegner, Beta Lambda;; and Meier Bauer, Gamma Phi, Chairman.

ADS Faced with Financial Needs

“One effective way to help members know that the chap-ter belongs to them and to help them keep their commit-ment is to invite members to give input on a chapter goal. Honor each woman – ask her for ideas.”

— Jane Meese on Strategic Action Planning

Members will head to Portland, Maine, July 24-27, 2013, for the Northeast Re-gional Conference to be held at the Holi-day Inn By the Bay. Maine Night, work-shops, speakers and a chorus of NE song-birds are just some of the featured high-lights. The biennium theme of Sharing Our Visions-Strengthening Our Society will be a focus of the conference. Members will share talents, hopes and dreams as they convene in the Northeast. Workshops will cover Society infor-mation, education and personal interests. Meet Ida LeClaire (aka Susan Poulin), a Maine humorist, and a featured keynote speaker. Other speakers include Sherene Henry, Susan Kuhn and Katie Snapp. Tours have been planned through the week, including the Botanical Gardens, Shaker Village, Culinary Trolley Tour, Wadsworth/Victoria Home, Freeport Shopping — the home of L.L. Bean, and a choice of Friday night entertainment. Come and renew friendships, explore this part of the world and enhance life-long learning experiences. Watch for registration information on the International website: www.dkg.org. Or perhaps you would like to visit a dif-ferent Regional Conference: Southeast in Orlando, FL, July 10-13;; Southwest in Branson, MI, July 17-20;; Northwest in Cheyenne, WY, July 31-August 3;; or Europe, in The Netherlands, August 7-10.

The Voice of Alpha Delta State Page 7 March 2013

From the time I began attending the Alpha Delta State conventions, I have enjoyed receiving the special favors. Over the years, I have collected many mementos from those conventions. I have also heard from some members who question whether the practice of giving favors is one we should continue. I want to share the following in-formation about favors, a time-honored tradition. A favor is a small gift given to the guests at an event as a gesture of thanks for their attendance, a memento of the occasion, or simply as an aid to frivolity. The first favors of note were documented in the 16th century, when bridal couples in England gave out love knots made of lace and ribbons. Favors were a way for the wedding cou-ple to thank their guests for attending their wedding and sharing in their celebration. The notion of wedding favors has continued throughout the centuries and has taken on different styles in cultures around the world. Favors have become popular for events other than weddings including our state convention, international conventions, regional conferences, and many special chapter meetings. Favors vary in price and durability in accordance with the desires and budget of the host or hostess. Guests may receive a simple and inexpensive favor that is a re-minder of the event. In some cases guests might receive a small "gift bag" containing several small favors or gifts. Favors are diverse and usually complement the theme or season of the event. A host or hostess may make or buy party favors for their event depending on budget, longevity of the favor, and available time. Party favors may also consist of short-lived items such as party hats, balloons, or noisemakers which help attendees celebrate, but which are not meant to be lasting souvenirs. In selecting favors for our conventions, we consider what most members might like, the cost and the usefulness of a possible favor. It is impossible to choose favors that suit everyone, and I have been told some are even thrown away. If you receive a favor that is not appropriate for you, please consider giving it to a member in your chapter for whom it is appropriate. Many of our members never have the opportunity to attend a state convention, and sharing a favor with them would be one way to make them feel a part of a state event. Another option is to leave an unwanted favor on the table. We generally sell extra favors at the Keepsake Shop to help us cover the cost. We make every effort to have fun, useful and reasonably priced favors our mem-bers will enjoy. I want the favors for the 2013 state convention to be a surprise, but I will tell you that some will be edible and some will be made by your fellow members. We hope you will enjoy everything about the 75th Anniversary Celebration includ-ing the favors at the Alpha Delta State convention. We are looking forward to seeing you April 12-14 at the Hilton at Easton! Dr. Norma Kirby, Alpha Delta State President

Diane Ingels, a 28 year member of Gam-ma Theta Chapter, has co-authored her first children’s book with her two sisters, Valerie Woebkenberg and Sylvia Hill. The book tells of a pine tree that leaves its woodland home at the invitation of an unexpected visitor who asks it to help grant a family’s Christmas wish. In so doing, the little tree begins an adventure of sharing and service that allows it to fulfill a long-held wish of its own. Origi-nally written in 1923 by an Indiana moth-er for her grandchildren, this heartwarm-ing holiday story has been adapted by the author’s great-granddaughters and beauti-fully illustrated by Elizabeth Guilford, another Indiana native. Now a new gener-ation can experience the warmth and wonder of this family’s timeless celebra-tion of God’s greatest gift. Published in late 2012, The Story the Little Christmas Tree Told, arrived just in time for holiday purchase by many of Diane’s fellow Gamma Theta sisters. The book is receiving great reviews and has already had a second printing. It is never too early to think ahead to gifts for Christmas 2013! If you are interested in a signed copy, please contact Diane Ingels via email at [email protected] with subject notation children’s book. Books are also available at www.amazon.com and www.buybooksontheweb.com.

Plan to Attend the Northeast Regional Conference The Delta Kappa Gamma Northeast Regional Conference will take place in Port-land, Maine, July 24-27, 2013. The Steering Committee is asking each state to par-ticipate. Please consider the following requests:

Encourage members to attend Watch for the DKG News to register for the Conference or register on-line Donate an item to the “Meet the Block” drawing Sign up to be part of the chorus Tour registration will be included in the DKG NEWS Members and chapters are encouraged to donate items for early career educa-tors;; the items will be collected at the luncheon and placed within the table arrangements (Items such as: rulers;; pencil packs;; eraser packs;; post it notes, boxes of staples;; boxes of paper clips;; pens;; sharpies;; paper punches;; scis-sors;; staple removers;; scotch tape;; masking tape;; expo white board markers;; white board erasers;; index cards;; glue sticks;; metal paper fasteners;; string or twine and push pins)

It would be fantastic to have a large delegation attend from Alpha Delta State!

While at the State Convention, be certain to visit the Scholarship Committee table at the Info Fair and register for the jewelry raffle. Fifteen lucky Alpha Delta State mem-bers will receive jewelry selections ranging from necklaces, earrings, and bracelets from K. and K. Interiors. However, there is a small catch. By accepting our gift, chap-ter members must help recruit five members of their own chapters to consider scholar-ship application. Why these numbers? Fifteen times five equals seventy-five—the convention’s magic number! Come check us out, learn more about scholarships, see which chapters have received past scholarships, view the jewelry and enter the raffle. Then, at Sunday’s breakfast, eagerly await for your name to be announced. Jewel-ry and scholarship packets will be distributed at that time. Dr. Lois Harkins, Scholarship Committee Chairman

Mania is defined as intense enthusiasm, interest, or desire;; a craze. The Communica-tions Committee came away from their rating session with a mania. It is evident many chapters have taken on the challenge of informing their members with newsletters that had attractive formatting, eye-appealing design, and correct Society information. The committee is offering a workshop at the state convention called “Newsletters, Meeting Notices, Notes?” We have invited a panel of experts from our own Alpha Delta chapters to answer questions about where they get their news, what production program do they use on their computer, how often do they publish, do they think a website will replace a newsletter, and other such burning matters. Come to learn and share. You will be able to ask your own questions of the panelists. For those who wish they had someone to ask questions about how to make a PDF, how to get rid of extra text boxes, how to do columns, how to add pictures in correct proportion, and other such topics, you may call on us by email to help answer your needs. Eileen McNally, webmaster, is a Mac user, and an expert on web pages ([email protected]), Ann Todd, editor, is a PC user, a business teacher, and a newsletter guru ([email protected]) and Sally Gillmore, committee chairman, is a Mac user and a former school librarian ([email protected]). Eileen and Sally produce their chapter newsletters. Also, we all own and use iPads. Let us help you. It is our greatest pleasure to see your newsletters improve, and we learn so much from you because we enjoy seeing your newsletter content. The Professional Affairs committee members have been in touch with this year’s re-cipients of the student teaching grants. Each committee member was given names of several recipients to contact and to let them know they were available to answer ques-tions and offer support. It is very rewarding to hear what they have to say about their student teaching experiences. In the meantime, the job of selecting next year’s recipients is quickly approaching. The new applications are coming in to meet the March 1 deadline. We received numer-ous calls this year from fellow sisters who inquired about these worthy grants. Our committee will review each application to select the students who are most worthy of our Esther Strickland Student Teaching Grants. We are hoping to announce ten grant recipients at the State Convention in April. Our committee will be seeking your gener-osity again at the luncheon for this deserving cause. Professional Affairs Committee: Barbara Ade, Gamma Pi;; Verlene DeWitt, Al-pha;; Jan Stewart, Omega;; Joyce St. Clair, Alpha Nu, Legislative Advocate;; and Sharyn Sibera, Beta Chi, Committee Chairman.

Esther Stickland’s Dream .. Coming True Again

The membership initiative, “Membership Madness” will conclude on April 13, 2013, at State Convention. Thank you to all members and chapters for working so hard to build the Society we care so much about. Some chapters initiated new members prior to convention and some will have new members initiated at State Convention. Everyone is invited to attend the initiation cere-mony which will be held prior to Birthday Luncheon on Saturday. Come and welcome these ladies into the Society. Thank you to the 88 chapters for submitting their chapter’s Necrology Report by the February 1, 2013, deadline. Your hard work is truly appreciated. Does your chapter have a membership action plan to help your chapter to continue to grow? Convention attendees will have two opportunities to learn more about devel-oping an action plan. During the first workshop session, the Membership Committee will present “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Membership and Then Some.” During the second workshop session, the Strategic Action Plan Committee will present “Strategic Action Planning–The Process.” Information will be shared at both workshops to help chapters develop a plan. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at State Convention on Sunday, April 14. Alpha Delta State members who have passed away since the 2012 conven-tion will be fondly remembered. Membership Committee: Linda Diltz, Beta Rho;; Karen Kern-Lazear, Gamma Phi;; Vicki Quinter, Beta Kappa;; Marilyn Slusser, Delta Kappa;; Emily Williams, Gamma Nu, Chairman.

The time is fast approaching for Alpha Delta State’s 75th Anniversary Celebration! The hospitals are eagerly awaiting the delivery of our many new children’s books. What have your chapter/members done to help us reach the goal of one thousand (1,000) books for our literacy project? We are asking that you help us, if possible, with your books by having them grouped into the following categories: Infants to Kindergarten, 1st to 3rd grade, 4th to 6th grade and young adult. There will be labeled tubs at the registration table to drop the books. Should a chapter choose to bring their books in boxes, please label the box-es or books in the same manner. We certainly appreciate your help in this area. Please visit our display in the Info Fair area. We hope to share books, pictures of the hospitals, and letters telling about the use of books in each hospital. The committee extends a special thank you to all members/chapters that have helped to make this a successful project for the 75th Anniversary.

By Jane Meese, Alpha Xi In December of 1988, I accepted an invitation for DKG membership from Gamma Mu Chapter and was encouraged to join by a dear friend in the chapter. For a few years, I was content to help with chapter operations and projects, meet women from nearby chapters and develop a new perspective of my peers and myself. When I moved to Logan and transferred to Alpha Xi, I needed to link with women in my new loca-tion—women I didn’t know. It was suggested that I become chapter treasurer because treasurers get to know everyone quickly. The days of expanding my participation had begun. I started going to state con-ventions because there are workshops for treasurers. Over time, I have met energetic and passionate women from all walks of education who direct operations for a few thousand members in Ohio (state personnel). I’ve met women who depend on financial help to advance their careers (scholarships);; who make time to share knowledge about their practices, leadership skills, technology skills, personal interests and DKG opera-tions (workshops);; and who step forward to arrange inspiring events (convention com-mittees) and interesting tours in Ohio’s cities (biennial seminar committees). I’ve met Ohio women who desire to study and travel overseas, and foreign women who seek to advance their studies and careers at Ohio universities (both A. Margaret Boyd recipi-ents). Budding educators appreciate our help with preparing for student teaching expe-riences (Strickland Grants). That’s just PART of the Ohio influence! Participation helped me value DKG opportunities for both myself and for other women. Just like the rest of us, Alpha Delta State personnel are volunteers and chapter members who support women at all levels of The Society. Unlike chapter personnel, they focus primarily on a few thousand members and interact with International. Alt-hough several things mentioned in the previous paragraph are supported by donations and interest income, someone has to administer those programs. Someone may have to drive somewhere, stay overnight, design and produce tons of handouts and electronic communications, make calls, plan and attend meetings and conventions, mail infor-mation and reports, visit chapters and otherwise make the DKG experience informa-tive, enjoyable and valuable for Ohio members. In the past two years, Alpha Delta State volunteers have made many budgetary cuts including some that support the work of state personnel. State officers, past presi-dents and chapter presidents approved those cuts. We made the cuts reluctantly, fear-ing that capable women may not be able to accept leadership positions at the state level because they need a little help with paying for getting our job done. Many organizations make the mistake of not asking for monies in a timely man-ner. No one wants to raise dues (or taxes) but, inevitably, reality hits. The economy falters, prices soar and, for a variety of reasons, membership declines. I’m sure many chapters have not increased their own dues for years. Are we in denial? And now—my pocket change story. Alpha Delta State is asking for a $3 dues increase to balance our majorly trimmed budget. When I remember my dues are help-ful for a few thousand other women in Ohio and beyond, I think I’d better come up with the money. I just checked the small bowl where I put coins when my purse gets too heavy. WAIT! There’s a tiny coin tray in my car. Taa Dah! I already have more than enough to cover a dues increase! By fall, I’ll be able to help someone else cover an increase, too. I’ve heard some chapters are having fundraisers to help members pay dues. They ROCK! We all do. Ask yourself “what’s in it for me?” Then consider, too, what your membership means to others. — J. Meese
