The Skinner Legacy Tour The Skinner Family are famed nearly as much for their philanthropic gifts as they are for business innovation and expertise in producing high quality silk and satin fabrics. In the tradition of late 19th century industrialists, much of the money the family made in business was returned to the community as donations to support the construction and development of various institutions—a chapel, a hospital, a city library, a gymnasium, a coffee house and even a state park. 

Join the curators of Wistariahurst and the Joseph Allen Skinner Museum for a jaunt around Holyoke and South Hadley to learn more about how their endeavors in industry and philanthropy overlapped. The program includes transportation and tours of various Skinner venues. Participants will get an insider tour of the Skinner Chapel of the United Congregational Church to see the beautiful stained glass windows and learn of the dedication of the chapel. The Joseph A. Skinner Museum 

will offer a tour of the eclectic collection featuring more than 6,000 objects and a special exhibition highlighting the collecting life of Joseph Skinner. The tour will include a stop at the Orchards, a former home of Joseph Skinner and his family in South Hadley. While in town, the group will also visit the Orchards Golf Course, host of the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open. Founding Director of the Donald Ross Society, Michael Fay, will present “20 Minutes with Donald Ross” dressed in plus‐fours, and refreshments can be enjoyed on the deck of the clubhouse. 

Join us for a day filled with interesting site visits and an enriched history about the Skinner Family Legacy. The Tour will take place on Saturday, June 30 from 12:30 to 4:15 p.m. Please call the museum to make a reservation. Tickets $30 per person, $25 for students and seniors 

Wistariahurst Landscape is Going Organic Last fall, the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) awarded grant funds to community organizations and municipal departments to support demonstrations of organic land care in public community spaces. Consultant Bernadette Giblin is collaborating with the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission to bring organic lawn projects to 5 Parks/Public spaces in western Massachusetts, and Wistariahurst Museum and the City of Holyoke are part of the project 

With the support of grant funding, Wistariahurst will have the opportunity to create and promote healthier communities by raising awareness and educating people about safer alternatives. The grant funds will provide Wistariahurst with financial support for organic materials, staff development/training for grounds crew, educational outreach and community workshops. The Community Program has fostered the development of unique partnerships around TURI among many diverse groups. These collaborative efforts have addressed toxics in and around schools, municipal buildings and operations, households, recreational activities, and small businesses.  

Wistariahurst already has an active garden educational program series and volunteer community gardeners who are invested in promoting best practices of gardening and landscape management.

David Poppie presents new works in: Strike, Dip and Draw May June Gallery Exhibition Local Artist David Poppie is represented by Pavel Zoubok Gallery in New 

York and the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His work 

has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He has been reviewed in 

the New York Times and has been featured in Sculpture Magazine. He lives 

and works in Easthampton, MA. 

David Poppie will be showing his latest work – collages built of matchbooks, paint sticks, and colored pencils in the Wistariahurst Gallery. In the past few years, Poppie has been working with different series characteristically focusing on one object‐ whether it is a used tea bag, match book, colored pencil, paint stick or bottle cap. By utilizing disposable objects and re‐contextualizing them into works of art, Poppie challenges us to reassess their value and to think about the disposable nature of our contemporary culture. 

In Strike, Dip and Draw each piece has a unique, defining “mark” within the pieces; from the anonymous strike of the used matchbook, the exposed pencil lead of the pencil, to the dipping of the paint stick into reclaimed paint. Each series projects multiple objects being placed together to form a composition. Strike, Dip and Draw is on view throughout the months of May and June 2012. Admission to the gallery $3 

In the Gallery: Paint Flowers! Contemporary Floral Painting/Nineteenth Century Roots

July-August Gallery Exhibition Opening Reception: Friday, July 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This summer, Holyoke‐based artist Nancy Howard will curate a show of contemporary watercolor and oil works inspired by 19th century painting in the Wistariahurst Gallery. Included in the show will be two paintings from the Museum collection and recent works from several Pioneer Valley artists, including Greg Stone, Caleb Colon, Martha Armstrong, Katy Schneider and Howard.  

During the late 19th century, the natural world became important for artists, thinkers and writers of post Civil War America. Plants and flowers were studied, collected, classified and catalogued from all over the globe. Flowers had long been a popular subject for painters and poets throughout the ages. With observations of flowers and still life, direct painting flourished, and combined with a free use of color and brush, linked works from the past to modern paintings today.  

Join us at Wistariahurst for the opening reception of Paint Flowers! On Friday, July 6 or visit the gallery on Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoons from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission to the gallery $3

Summer Lecture Series: History that Highlights Summertime Fun Monday evenings at 6 p.m. in the Carriage House.

This Summer Wistariahurst Museum will host a series of lectures and movies about local summertime activities.  These lectures will inspire you to get outside and learn about outdoor sites and activities you can take part in here in Holyoke or nearby. Speakers include, Jay Ducharme, speaking about Mountain Park Memories; Ellie Lobovits of The Trustees of Reservations will identify things to do outdoors in Holyoke; Matt Villamaino of the Dept of Conservation & Recreation will give us some history of Skinner Mountain and the Summit House; and Bob Schwobe will be on the big screen with the airing of his documentary productions about the Mount Tom Range. The lectures and movies will take place in the air‐conditioned Carriage House on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. during July. See event listings for exact dates. Suggested donation $5 

Viola da Gamba Historical Concert Performance Saturday, June 16 at 3:00 p.m. Joseph Maria Antonio is a professional musician who specializes  in historical performance. He will perform a concert that is an introduction to the viola da gamba and its versatility. The viola  da gamba is a beautiful instrument, developed in the mid‐late fifteenth‐century that is about the size of the cello, but with six strings and frets.  

Born to a Portugese family in Ludlow, MA, Joseph Maria Antonio’s passion for music led him to Seville, Spain where he studied flamenco guitar. He studied viola da gamba with Maestro Rami Alqhai for several years in Spain and has participated in many musical projects from chamber music to fado, playing in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Finland, Germany and the United States. 

Joseph Maria Antonio’s performance on June 17 will showcase the multi‐faceted abilities of the viola da gamba; sometimes being played like a violin, other times like a cello, a guitar or a lute. Music for the program will range from the mid to the late baroque; compositions written for the viola da gamba and the violoncello, with pieces from the French school (Marais and Forqueray) and German (Abel and Bach) as well as an addition of some fun Celtic pieces. Tickets $10/ $8 students & seniors 

Jack Kowal Swing Band Sunday, June 17 at 3:00 p.m. Come out for a swingin’ good time on Father’s Day! Bring your dad, a picnic and chairs or a blanket and sit out on the lawn to hear members of the  Jack Kowal Swing Band playing good music and having a great time!  

The band which has been playing together for almost 10 years, is bringing its big band sound to Holyoke! Founded by Jack Kowal and Rip Bourgignon, this group plays in the style of the old time jazz big bands. The nineteen‐piece band loves to play at local events and share their upbeat sound with the community, and they say their purpose is “not to make money, but to play good music and have fun doing so!” 

So have fun with them at Wistariahurst this summer! You’ll find yourself tapping your toes to their original arrangements, and dancing in your seat as they play scores by ensembles like the famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. Rain date Sunday, June 24 at 3 p.m. Free, donations accepted 

Holyoke Youth Strings Concert Thursday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. The Holyoke Summer Strings 2011 Program will present a Summer Concert on the lawn at Wistariahurst. There will be music in the air when the Strings Program performs an array of folk, classical and pop music in the charming atmosphere of the Wistariahurst gardens. The youth string ensemble, under the direction of Program Director, Jenifer Gelineau, involves students from E.N. White, Kelly, Morgan, Peck, Sullivan, and Holyoke High School. In the occurrence of rain, the concert will take place inside the Wistariahurst Music Room. Please bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Free, donations accepted 

Senior Concert Band of Western Mass Sunday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m. Spend a relaxing afternoon outside on the lawn at Wistariahurst listening to the Senior Concert Band of Western Mass. The band, which has just about every instrument but the violin, has forty members ranging from 62 to 90. Walter Gladwin is the director. They’ll be playing everything from show tunes to classics, a mix of marches, and a few patriotic songs. And the 90 year old band member? He’s the first trumpet! Bring a picnic lunch, a lawn chair or a blanket, and spend some time smelling the roses in the Wistariahurst gardens and listening to the wonderful sounds of the Senior Concert Band. Rain date Sunday, August 19 at 2p.m. Free, donations accepted

May & June Gallery Exhibition – Strike, Dip and Draw: Recent Works by David Poppie In the past few years artist David Poppie has been working with different series involving matchbooks, colored pencils, and paint stir sticks.  Each piece being shown has its unique, defining ʺmarkʺ within the pieces; from the anonymous strike of the used matchbook, the exposed pencil lead of the pencil, to the dipping of the paint stick into reclaimed paint. Each series projects multiple objects being placed together to form a composition. Admission to the gallery $3 

Sunday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m.  – Friends & Lovers: The Schumanns and Brahms The Chamber Music Society at Wistariahurst returns with a Mother’s Day program of romantic music by Robert and Clara Schumann and their intimate friend and colleague, Johannes Brahms. Selections will include some dazzling piano works from Clara’s early years, a vocal quartet piece by Robert, Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata in E‐flat major, and many more spectacular pieces. Regular admission $20. Mother’s Day special offer: Bring your mother for a discounted ticket of $10. Reservations suggested 

Monday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m. —The Great Lawrence Textile Strike of 1912: Why it Matters 100 Years Later The 1912 Great Lawrence Textile Strike, now often remembered as the “Bread and Roses Strike,” captured national attention as an immigrant and largely female workforce challenged the authority of the American Woolen Company and others to cut their wages and speed up their machines. Utilizing images, newspaper accounts, and Congressional testimony, Professor Robert Forrant will bring the strike to life and discuss why it still matters one hundred years later, especially in former mill cities like Holyoke, MA. Suggested donation $5

Saturday, June 2 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Victorian Game Day During Victorian times, as summer neared and the weather improved, game time was no longer restricted to the parlor. Young girls and boys flocked to parks, lawns and other outdoor spaces. The same goes for today! Join us for an invigorating afternoon playing Victorian lawn games such as Croquet, Badminton, The Game of Graces & Kite Flying. Families and kids of all ages are invited to take a step outside and back in time at Wistariahurst Museum! Event is FREE.  Rain or shine (games subject to change in the event of rain) 

Sunday, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. – Beethoven’s Wig Concert Beethoven once said, ʺIf my music had words itʹd be a lot more popular.ʺ His wish has come true!  Kids and families will enjoy the classical music they know with a new twist from Richard Perlmutter, the lead singer, writer, and performer of the 4‐time Grammy nominated group Beethovenʹs Wig. FREE 

Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m.  – Garden Talk: A Rose Primer Would you like roses for your garden? Master Gardener Mary Morse returns to help you discover a whole world of rose groups that thrive in our zone 5 climate. She will highlight floribundas, grandifloras, Rugosas, climbers, and more. Garden talks are a $5 donation to benefit the garden restoration at Wistariahurst

Sunday, June 17 at 3:00 p.m. – Celebrate Father’s Day with the Jack Kowal Swing Band Bring a picnic and chairs or a blanket and sit out on the lawn to hear members of the Jack Kowal Swing Band playing good music and having a great time! Directed by Mr. Rip Bourguignon, baritone saxophonist, the band plays its own arrangements as well as scores by other big‐band inspired groups. Join them for a high‐energy, swingin’ good time! Rain date Sunday, June 24 at 3pm. FREE, donations accepted

Monday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. – Summertime Fun Lecture Series: Mountain Park Memories Take a trip down memory lane on the 25th anniversary of the closing of Mountain Park. Lecturer Jay Ducharme worked at Mountain Park for over a decade and has spent much of his life preserving and sharing the history of the park. Join Ducharme for this talk featuring images and videos of the famed amusement park.  Suggested Donation $5 

Wednesday, July 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Young Ladies & Gentlemen: Kids’ Programming with the Holyoke Public Library Young ladies and gents are invited to Wistariahurst Museum for an hour of courteous activities! The event starts with a game of “Graces”, a reading of selected polite stories, followed by a quick lesson in table manners. Our hour ends with tea time on the lawn at Wistariahurst, in which all can display their gracefulness and manners. Event is rain or shine. Reservations suggested. FREE 

Monday, July 16 at 6:00 p.m. – Summertime Fun Lecture Series: 50 Things to Do Outdoors in Holyoke Join Ellie Lobovits, education coordinator of The Trustees of Reservations as she provides information about all of the amazing ways you can connect to nature right here in Holyoke. Want to get outside, but don’t know where to go? Want to learn about new hiking/biking trails? Want to explore the river but don’t know how to access it? You’ll leave this talk full of ideas for your next journey outdoors! Suggested Donation $5

Monday, July 30 at 6:00 p.m. – Summertime Fun Lecture Series: History of the Mount Tom Range and The Eagles Nest Come and learn about the history of Mount Tom Range, featuring many of its peoples, places and then the History of the Eyrie House Hotel and its Proprietor William Street. Both documentaries were produced and narrated by Robert Schwobe. Suggested Donation $5

Saturday, August 18 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. – Garden Workshop: Hypertufa Get ready to get your hands dirty! Master Gardener Deb Hamm will host this workshop on making mud‐pie‐like hypertufa, a unique and long‐lasting material that is a great way to add more container plants to your garden. Materials will be provided and all participants will go home with the planter they make. Pre‐registration is required as seating is limited. Fees for garden workshops benefit the garden restoration at Wistariahurst. Admission $20, including mold for pot 

The Annual Plant Sale at Wistariahurst Saturday, May 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Join the Wistariahurst Gardeners and the Western Massachusetts Master Gardeners at their annual plant sale on the west lawn. The gardeners will be sharing the bounty of their gardens with the gardening public. All plants will be for sale at $1 each & up.  

On sale you will find house plants, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees, various daylilies that will bloom all summer, and much, much more. We encourage you to bring your own wagons or carts to make carrying purchases more convenient.  

Master Gardeners will be on‐hand to conduct soil tests for $1 per sample and will be available to answer your gardening questions.  Free 

Yoga in the Gardens Saturdays: June 23, July 21 & August 11 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Join VegaYoga Movement & Arts on the lawn at Wistariahurst for three invigorating and refreshing yoga sessions amidst the historic gardens. This is the third summer we’ve offered  Yoga in the Gardens and we can assure you that you’ll be transported by the happiness and new self exploration felt after an hour of yoga! Embracing the ʺYoga for the Peopleʺ philosophy, VegaYoga & Movement Arts offers a wide range of trained teachers and a desire to make yoga accessible to everyone, reaching out to all members of the community. Yoga in the Gardens takes place on three summer Saturdays: June 23, July 21, and August 11 from 9 to 10am. Reservations encouraged. $13 per class / $30 for all three classes.

Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. – Those Blooming Hydrangeas This lecture from Master Gardener Mary Morse will provide an in‐depth look into the many varieties of hydrangeas. Learn when and how to prune, fertilize and cultivate this very popular shrub. Admission $5 donation 

Recent Acquisitions: The Magoon Collection of Papermaking History On April 30, Dave Magoon, brought to Wistariahurst Museum his collection of paper making history materials. Mr. Magoon, founder of University Products, Inc. of Holyoke, MA has been collecting items related to papermaking history since the 1960s when he was a paper salesman for the Brown Paper Company of Adams, MA. As he saw the once prosperous industry start to slow and move out of Massachusetts he realized the need to preserve through collecting the paper industry’s history. The collection of over 100 items includes paper sample books; advertisements and brochures; papermaking micrometers, gauges and scales; photographs; printed samples; instruction manuals and handbooks; unique tools like a lofting rod, dandy roller sleeves and a lithographic printing stone. Holyoke paper manufacturers represented include American Writing Paper, Parsons Paper Company, Newton Paper Co, and Chemical Paper Co, to name a few. Penni Martorell, museum curator and Holyoke city historian commented “This collection will help folks learn how Holyoke got its nickname “Paper City. And of course, all the items are housed in the finest archival materials, which will make processing the collection much easier.” The earliest item in the collection is an 1872 printed map of Massachusetts. Once the collection is accessioned and cataloged, a finding aid will be produced and the collection will be open for research use. 

WEEKEND SUMMERTIME GAMES & MUSIC Travel back in time at Wistariahurst Museum for a free weekend of fun for kids! Join us in 

the beautifully restored gardens of Wistariahurst to play games of yore on the lawn—

croquet, badminton and more! Return to Wistariahurst on Sunday to take in a free concert 

entitled “Beethoven’s Wig”, a whimsical take on well‐known classical favorites.  

Victorian Games Saturday, June 2 from 1 to 3:00 p.m. Wistariahurst is hosting an afternoon of old‐fashioned outdoor games on the lawn. Visitors of all ages are welcome to play a rousing game of croquet, volley the birdie with an invigorating match of badminton, soar kites as high as they’ll go, or keep your elegance intact with the Victorian favorite game “Graces”. Free 

Concert: Beethoven’s Wig Sunday, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. We welcome Richard Perlmutter into Belle Skinner’s Music Room. His music is a fabulous introduction to classical music for children of all ages. Perlmutter was inspired by Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and created silly lyrics for classical songs. This show is sure to make an enjoyable, toe‐tapping afternoon. Free 

Wistariahurst Museum Collaborates with the Holyoke Public Library to Bring Free Summer Programs to Youth

Wistariahurst Museum and the Holyoke Public Library have put together two FREE fantastic fun Summer programs! 

Stories and reading combined with related activities in gardening and manners will both entertain and make learning 

fun for children. Both programs will take place at Wistariahurst Museum. 

Young Ladies and Gentlemen July 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This program will feature readings of several books, including Fancy Nancy, all with the idea in mind to politely remind kids to mind their manners. The day will end with a tea party in the garden.

Books in Bloom! July 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Plant the seeds for imagination while touring Wistariahurst’s gardens. Books will feature garden related stories  and activities will include replanting and nurturing a flower. End the day in Victorian style with a rousing game of croquet on the lawn!

The Museum is open for guided tours every Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 12 – 4 p.m.. Historic House Tours are 

$7 general admission and $5 for students and seniors. The Gallery is open every Saturday, Sunday and Monday from  

12 – 4 p.m. During these hours, the Carriage House & Gift Shop is also open. Hours for Archive Research are Monday
