ONE NIGHT ONLY!

This time of year, it’s difficult to look out over the shores of Chautauqua Lake and not wish to be “out there.” The water beckons you, and the scenery is simply second-to-none. Could you think of a more relaxing way to while away the daytime hours, or watch an incredible sunset? So

what if the lawn gets a little longer, or the dishes sit in the sink for a few more hours – this is summer in Chautauqua County and we all know it’s not exactly the longest season of the year (or maybe it just seems that way). I just love sitting on the front porch of The Lenhart and rocking away the afternoon with a few “Dark and Stormies.” The flotilla of boats out of Bemus Point put on quite a show for those of us who are shoreline bound. Fishermen, water skiers, cruisers and party bargers all seem to be having such a great time. That’s the way it is with boaters – eat, drink and make merry. Take advantage of all Mother Nature has bestowed upon us, here in this most beautiful corner of NYS. Enjoy a tour on the water – you’ll be better for it! And don’t forget! The Villager’s September 9-16 trip to Tuscany with our

host, Romeo Innocenti is fast approaching. Romeo, the owner of the villa and our benevolent host for this trip, is a wonderful guy. He’s kind and very accommodating; just the kind of fellow you want in charge. We’ve planned a little “riunione” for all of you to meet Romeo in person at the Italian Fisherman Restaurant in Bemus Point July 18. Of course, we must show our guest how considerate our Villager fans can be, so we’ll have plenty of Tuscan food and wine to share. Call The Italian Fisherman today (386-7000) for your reservation to this wonderful evening and learn more about the upcoming trip September 9-16, 2011. The more, the merrier, so I’m extending a special invitation to all our loyal readers to come meet Romeo and get a taste of Tuscany. I’m very excited – can you tell? Until next week… JZ

St. James Summer Festival50th Annual Event this Weekend, July 8-10 Celebrates Heritage

By Meaghan O’RourkeSt. Bonaventure University

A Jamestown parish celebrates its 50th summer festival, St. James Fest, this week. The weekend-long festival will take place in the parking lot of St. James Parish at 27 Allen St. on July 8-10. “Since 2003, St. James Fest has proven to be a much-an-ticipated event in the city of Jamestown,” said Tom Franco, event chairman. “The parish-ioners have been working for months to prepare for this spec-tacular community event.” The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday with a cash bar and an Italian a la carte menu. The menu feature Muffaletta Paninis, meatball subs, Italian sand-wiches and Gaetano’s famous pasta salad. The Chautauqua Big Swing Band (formerly Germaine and Pappalardo) will perform from 7-9 p.m. for a “free-will donation” communi-ty dance. “The dance is free and

open to the community,” Franco said. “Any donations will ben-efit the Catholic Academy of the Holy Family School.” Saturday’s festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. with a Broadway show by the Lettieri’s, parish-ioners of St. James. It will also include Irish folksongs by Doc and Bill, the St. James Parish Italian Heritage Dancers with accordionist Joe Iuculano, and 4:30 p.m. mass. The day will close with the Caribbean sounds of the Kokomo Time Band, which is scheduled to begin its performance at 5:30 p.m. The celebration of mass at 8 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. kicks off Sunday’s events. The follow-ing schedule includes the Italian dancers, music by Joe Iuculano, and “Happy Days” with Ross and Chuck, parishioners. The raffle drawing should close the event at 5:30 p.m. “Of all the happenings,” Franco said, “the most impor-tant thing is the celebration of our Catholic mass. We invite

everyone to come together and join us in sharing our faith in the living Jesus Christ, our salva-tion.” Admission and parking to the event is free. Vendors will offer a variety of other Italian foods through-out the weekend including Fried Dough, Pepperoni balls, Arancini rice balls, eggplant Parmesan, pasta and meatballs, Italian sausage, Stromboli, piz-za, Cardooni, hot dogs and a full line of cold beverages will also be included on the menu. Franco said to honor Fr. Darrell Duffy and Deacon Mike Lennon, Irish corn beef sandwiches would also be offered. The church’s Altar and Rosary Society also prepared homemade Italian baked goods for the event. Call the parish at (716) 487-0125 with questions or for more information. “This event brings so many people togeth-er,” Franco said. “Come join us for a weekend of food, fun and fellowship.”

Jamestown” tent make up the Market Tent this year. “The ‘Made in Jamestown’ tent will have local artisans with many unique items to be found,” Sandy said. The traditional Kubb tournament will take place on Saturday afternoon to determine who is the best player. “Kubb is a lawn game where you throw batons to knock down the opponents blocks,” Sandy said. “Once you have completed that process you can toss your baton to knock down the King and be the winner.”

Two new sections have been added to the festival as well: one specifically for children and families and the other a tent for lectures. The family area will feature storytelling and Scandinavian crafts for children. The lecture tent will feature 16 lectures over the three days. Another rare-find is the genealogy area where people can bring information about their ancestors and look further into their family history. A genealogist from Sweden will be present as well as Karen Livsey from the Fenton History Center. The full entertainment, lecture and workshop schedules are available at www.scandinavianjamestown.

org under the “Program Lineup” tab near the top of the page. “Even in bad weather there is plenty of space to stay dry,” Sandy said. With plenty of huge tents Sandy knows that no matter what people can have a great time. The festival begins on Friday, July 15th from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. for $6 ($4 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.); Saturday, the 16th from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for $7 ($4 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.); and Sunday, the 17th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for just $3. “Everything in the festival is free unless you’re buying something,” Sandy said. neighbors by hauling their loads across the water as well. Within a few years there was so much traffic for Tom that he decided to turn it into a business, and in 1811 obtained the first license to run ferry service on the lake. The first ferries were log rafts, pulled along a rope by the pilot. Tom’s rates were 6 ½ cents for a pedestrian. 18 ¾ cents for a horse and rider and 37 ¾ cents for a wagon or carriage with oxen or horses. The rope was eventually replaced by a steel cable, and over the years various boats, with various types of propulsion plied the waters. In 1942 Chautauqua County took over operation of the ferry. In 1946 the county made major improvements to the ferry, enlarging the boat so it could carry up to nine automobiles. All this was fine until October 30th 1982 when the Chautauqua Lake Bridge officially opened, and the county decided to suspend operations. A group known as the Sea Lion Project Ltd. made the audacious decision to take over operation of the ferry, and

not only that, but not charge a fee for the service. Instead they rely on donations from riders, individuals, and businesses in the area. In spite of many challenges during the last 28 years this dedicated group has managed to keep the Bemus Point- Stow Ferry operating and in excellent shape. Now, on the 200th anniversary of not only the ferry but the founding of Chautauqua County it’s time to have a party. The celebration for the ferry begins on Friday July 8th with a re-dedication ceremony at Stow Landing. Just after the ceremony there will be a private wedding on the ferry, and once that ceremony is over the ferry will open for public rides. The Bemus Point Historical Society will be open from 1pm to 4pm, and in the evening will be a tour of the Bemus Point Cemetery. The tour will be sponsored by the Village Haunts of Bemus Point. Saturday things really get rolling with the Open invitation Curse-In at the Town of North Harmony Building on Old Bridge Road in Stow. Other events continue throughout the day including an Ice Cream Social at Lighthouse Park in Stow, and the Hotel Lenhart in Bemus Point. Music continues through the afternoon in Lighthouse Park, featuring

the group Jamestown Harmony Express, a mens a capella singing group. The cemetery tours will explore the Magnolia Cemetery. Saturday night the Bemus Bay Pops presents Mike Randall as Mark Twain, comedy from Sam Greisbaum, and music by The Ragtime Island Windjammers. The show is free thanks to a contribution from DFT Communications in Fredonia. On Sunday, at the Town of North Harmony Building there will be an open invitation Motorcycle Bike-N-Cruise, starting at 10:00am. The ferry will be open for rides most of the weekend starting Friday at about 11:00am and at 9:30am on Saturday and Sunday. There are precious few tourist ferries in operation in the country, and almost none that survive on donations alone. But, according to Betty Lou Cheney from the Sea Lion Project, “people have been very generous (with donations) because they like the idea of taking the ferry across the lake.” The ferry operates on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and is available for bicycle and equestrian groups that are restricted from using the bridge. For more information about the celebrations see their web site: sealionprojectltd.com.

tone for the afternoon,” Arnone continues, “We wanted to go with an island-type theme for the event so we wanted Mosaic Foundation because they fit with it perfectly. Although it’s not

included in the $10.00 ticket price, we will have a cook on sight preparing delicious jerk-chicken to compliment the afternoon’s theme. It’s just going to be a great celebration of summer.” The Southern Tier Brewing Company would like to remind all event-goers that designated drivers will be able to get into the even free of charge. Tickets are available online at www.

southerntierbrewing.com or in person at the brewpub itself located at 2072 Stoneman Circle in Lakewood. Pre-sale is encouraged in order to estimate the amount of chicken needed for the event. Come by and enjoy the summer fun with friends at the Southern Tier Brewing Company “Summerfest,” it promises to be a great afternoon anyone in the mood to celebrate.
