About the Falling Leaves Festival - In late 1975, members of various Salamanca fraternal and service organizations were concerned that civic pride was declining and decided to form a committee to rectify the situation, so Paul D. Formica, with his wife Sandra, formed a committee which was called the Salamanca Positive Action Committee (SPAC). The mission was to develop ideas to restore civic pride, improve the look of Main Street and attract new businesses to the area. One of the ideas the SPAC discussed was holding a festival in the fall, which became known as the Falling Leaves Festival.

After a two year stint in Ellicottville, the annual Literacy Volunteers Tour of Interesting Homes benefi t will move on to feature homes in Olean. The tour has been running annually for the past seven or eight years and each year presents homes in different parts of Cattaraugus County. The tour included homes in Ellicottville three years ago, but when the tour was over, so many local homeowners came forward to offer their homes for the tour, that the group decided to hold the tour in Ellicottville again last year. For this, the seventh year of the tour it moves back to Olean.“The Tour of Interesting Homes is a wonderful opportunity for area residents to enjoy viewing a wide array architectural, historical, and variety of homes,” says Renee Bizzaro, Executive Director of the Literacy Volunteers. “Our defi nition of interesting includes: architecturally, historically, design, and decorated,” Renee says. Of the twelve or so houses on the tour several will be completely open for tours, while at others the grounds may be open or certain sections of the house. “At least one portion of every home will be available to those who are participating,” Renee tells me. One of the intriguing homes on the tour is a restored Victorian, “much of the original charm is there, so architecturally it’s very interesting and inside

there’s a wonderful array of collectables and memorabilia from the homeowner.” The tour runs Saturday September 11th from 11am to 5pm. Tickets are available for $15 advance sale at the Olean Historical Society (The Bartlett House) and $20 the day of the event at the various homes. Registration begins at 10:30am the day of the tour. A descriptive booklet and map will be provided with the tickets. The Literacy Volunteers of Cattaraugus County was founded in 1969 to provided literacy services to adults in

the County. Tutors are paired up with an adult learner to help enhance their reading skills. Tutors provide skill in basic adult literacy, math skills, English as a second language and some computer skills. “The majority of our services are provided one on one, with a tutor working directly with a learner, biased on the learners needs.” Renee goes on, ‘We currently have about twenty individuals paired up.” For an opportunity to see unique houses and help some adults in the county improve their reading skills, mark your calender.

Seneca, owner of Raging Wolf Productions. “We’re excited to give MMA fans of this region the opportunity to meet legends.” The challenger for the main event, Elaina “Beef” Maxwell, has an extensive stand-up background. Her skills have been put to the test with recent fi ghts such as a fi ve-round war with champion Gina Carano and a three-round battle with world-contender Miesha Tate. Victorious in her last fi ght, Maxwell is ready for another title shot and a chance to improve her world ranking. “Because she [bantamweight champion Alexis Davis] is the hometown girl, I know I can’t win by decision,” said Maxwell. “So I’m ready to bring it.” Champion Alexis Davis is set to defend her title for the second time at Raging Wolf IX. MMA female in the world. If she can defeat Maxwell, Davis will defend her title against Tonya Evinger once again in November for Raging Wolf X. “With every new opponent, I learn how to improve myself,” Davis said. “I am always perfecting my game, and on August 28, I look forward to proving why I am the Raging Wolf Bantamweight Champion.” The winner of this battle will face off against Tonya “Triple Threat” Evinger on November 6 at Raging Wolf X. Evinger is banking on a rematch with Davis. “It’s diffi cult to make predictions in MMA, but I see Davis prevailing,” Evinger said. “I see ‘Evinger vs, Davis II’ in November, and this time I will have had enough notice to be in the best condition and put on an even better show – even though, win or lose, I always put on a good show. My goal

is that belt and to grow with Raging Wolf. I am impressed with their promotion of women in this sport as well as the rest of the matchups. With the way things are going, they should be contending with Bellator and Strikeforce in the near future.” Weigh-ins for all fi ghters will take place Friday, August 27 at 6 p.m. located in the lobby of the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. The event is free, and fans in attendance can get their pictures taken with their favorite fi ghters, the ERW Ring Girls, and the Hey Hey Knockout Girls. Rock’n Oldies Weekend

My name is Erica Walker. I am 35 years old.

To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.

I have most recently been attending Erie Community College in hopes of attaining my Registered Nursing degree. I have about another year before I complete it. However, I’ve decided to take a break from it while attending to my most recent illness. I am trying to be brave and stay healthy enough until I can receive a kidney transplant. Doctors say I’m fairly young to be diagnosed with CKD. I have been receiving dialysis treatments for about a year now. I worked at Interstate Baking Company for 10 years prior to the plant closing a few years back. They made Wonder Bread and Hostess products right here in Buffalo, NY. My boyfriend, Jim, and I have recently purchased and moved into our fi rst home. We’re very excited. Our plans are to marry and raise a family here in Cheektowaga. If you are blood type “A” and would like to be Erica’s living kidney donor, please call Jeanette Ostrom at 716-450-8958 or e-mail Erica at [email protected]
