DO APRIL SHOWERSBRING MAYFLOWERS?

The name April is rooted inthe Latin Aprilis which is derivedfrom the Latin word meaning “toopen” – a reference to theblossoming of flowers and trees,a common occurrencethroughout the month in the theUnited States.

We are blooming at Belmonttoo! With the longer days ourresidents are enjoying moreVitamin D and gardening on ourback patio. We are all set forEarth Day on April 22nd; comeget your hands in the dirt!

We offer over a dozeninstructor led classes per week. We’ve added three challengingworkout sessions with Jason, our dynamic fitness buff.

The best anaerobic exercise isswimming, and Patricia’s wateraerobic class is gainingmomentum. The combination of80 degree water temp andsunshine make it an idealworkout. Patricia keeps it funwith plenty of pool noodles foreveryone!

For those of you who missedour Mission tour ... no worries!Join us on our upcoming outingto Rancho Bernardo Winery. Webelieve the best way towelcome spring is to sip wineand gaze at the majestic localmountains. Cheers to fun inthe sun!

Jason keeps the crowd active andengaged while working on strength.

Resident Garden on back patio

Patricia leads class in the heated poolwhich is a great way to reduce pain inaching joints and muscles.

NURSE’S NOTEThis month starts off with

April Fools’ Day, a perfect wayto celebrate the National HumorMonth. Humor is defined as thequality that makes somethinglaughable or amusing.

We often hear that laughter isthe best medicine. It’s true:laughter is a strong medicine. Itdraws people together in waysthat trigger healthy physical andemotional changes in the body.Laughter strengthens yourimmune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protectsyou from the damaging effectsof stress.

Along with other healthawareness events we recognizethis month, Stress Awareness iscelebrated in the month of April.Stress is a normal psychologicaland physical reaction to thedemands of life. However, stresscan have negative effects suchas causing damages to your

health, relationships or quality oflife. Start practicing stressmanagement techniques today.

Many people benefit frompractices such as deepbreathing, maintaining a healthydiet, exercising regularly, andsimply by getting enough sleep.Take time for yourself—take abubble bath, go dancing, or goto a comedy show for somelaughs.

Humor is a wonderfulstress-reducer and antidote toupsets. It is clinically proven tobe effective in combating stress.Experts say a good laughrelaxes tense muscles, speedsmore oxygen into your systemand lowers your blood pressure. So tune into your favoritesitcom on television. Read afunny book. Call a friend andchuckle for a few minutes. Iteven helps to force a laugh oncein a while. You’ll find your stressmelting away almost instantly.

NEIGHBORHOODNEWS

One sunny morning I arrivedat my desk to see that it wasdecorated for spring. Sharon, one of our pals, placed a signthat read, “Don’t put all youreggs ... in one basket!”Delighted, I thought howappropriate to the work we doin the neighborhood and villagethat message is to us. Wecannot limit our options. Rigidityhas no place when it comes todementia. We must be able toprovide structure and routinewhile allowing us to be flexibleenough to meet our residentswhere they are at all times.Having an arsenal of differentapproaches under our beltsallows us to accomplish taskswhile preserving our resident’ssense of independence anddignity. It is important to retreatfrom an approach that does notwork before causing frustration, but also one may not desist toosoon to accomplish a goal. Ourstaff faces this decision severaltimes a day. When training newstaff, I am often asked, “How canI know?” It takes a deepconnection between the twopeople to understand thenuances of non-verbalcommunication. It also takesfailure. Though challenging, it ismore often than not one of themost beautiful exchangesbecause it comes from a placeof genuine desire to help.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDSHappy Easter! COF looks

forward to painting eggs, making cards, and towelbunnies. Particularly, Donna W.plans to join Sunday Bible study,as church has always been ahuge part of her life. Activitieslike this are interesting andtherapeutic. Enrichment leadersAmina R. and Noah S. take pridein bringing what they know tosupplement calendar activities inconjunction with residents’interests.

Stephen Hawking passedaway on March 14. AlbertEinstein’s birthday also fell onthis date. In C1, Amina facilitateda critical thinking discussion ofthis coincidence since both wererenowned physicists. Adding tothe discussion, Amina decidedto show the latest StephenHawking film “The Theory ofEverything.” It was a huge hitwith the residents who stayed towatch the entire film.

In C2, Noah has playedcomputer games with his group. On Pioneer Women Day, hebrought in a favorite childhoodgame The Oregon Trail.Residents were “virtual”pioneers as they traversed theGreat Plains buying supplies, exploring rock cliffs and, sadly, even experiencing diseases.Analytical and long-termmemory required, residentsmade decisions throughout thegame to level up and stay alive!

Village residents singing and dancingalong to live music.

Gene C. and Nancy C. get creativemixing colors.

Fran B. gets a hand with herpaper-mâché egg from Emily B.
