James’ NoteLast month, we celebrated our
Team Member Shining StarsAwards. Please join me incongratulating all our ShiningStars, recognized with an awardthis year (pg. 2 list). A quick noteto all of our Team Members:
I appreciate all the work you do,your tireless effort day in and dayout, and your caring nature. I’mhappy to know you and workalongside you to be the bestCommunity in Sr. Living. From thebottom of my heart, thank you!
The 2015 Employee of the Yearwas presented to Manny Suson,LVN. I met Manny over five yearsago, when I interviewed him for aPAL position. Manny was new tothe United States, an RN from thePhilippines, and eager to get hisfeet wet in Los Angeles.
Over the years, I have been soimpressed with Manny, providingcare to residents in theNeighborhood — such a strongleader as a PAL. Then, hetransitioned into the ActivityAssistant position, also in theNeighborhood. He was a fantasticActivity Leader — all the residentswere so engaged whenever Mannywas working.
THEN, Manny became an LVN,after passing the State Boards:N-CLEX.
Manny is respected by his peers
and is loved by all the residentsand family members. I sleep wellat night knowing Manny is at ‘thewheel.’ When there’s a blip inoperations in the evening andManny is working, I know it willbe handled well.
Thank you, Manny! Every jobyou have done at Belmont Villagehas been executed withprofessionalism, poise and withsuch great leadership. We arelucky to have you and I lookforward to the next adventure inyour career. ~ Sincerely, James

DRCS Health Hintsby Zara Khatchatrian
March is “Brain InjuryAwareness” month.
When we think or hear of abrain injury, we refer to it as eitherorganic, brain tissue or toxicchemical destruction, or physicaltrauma. There is another type ofbrain injury that is nowcommonly known to us, PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).We are faced by many morechallenges with the prevalenceand high incidences of PTSD.PTSD has been in existence formany years. It has been suggestedto be the results from anemotional response toenvironmental events withunderlying psychological trauma. We see more and more cases ofdiagnosed PTSD, especiallyamong combat soldiers, “Our
Vets” who came home from thewar. We have seniors in ourcommunity who were in WorldWar II, the Korean and VietnamWar. Most of them do not like totalk about the details of what theyhave experienced during the war. Some don’t like to talk about it atall. It’s emotionally disturbingto them.
PTSD presents the characteristicsymptoms of high anxiety, hypervigilance, irritability, difficult tocalm down, negativity, exaggerated reaction to stimuli, some become anti social ordifficulty with interpersonalrelationship. The trauma is socomplex and has resulted fromrepeated, prolonged exposure tomultiple forms of interpersonaltrauma, often under certaincircumstances where escape is notpossible. In order to understandthe complexity of PTSD, we needto know the different perspectiveof the disorder. We need moreHealthcare Professionals orProviders that will focus ontreating and assisting thoseindividuals, especially thosevictims of war. Challenges withPTSD has just begun for the newgeneration to come.
Please support our troops!
