THE THE THE

VILLAGE HERALDVILLAGE HERALDVILLAGE HERALD

The Magnificent Five June has been interesting and full of newness in our church. The Village

UMC has undergone rapid changes: new worship times, new pastors, and new

musicians. I am very excited to introduce to you “The Magnificent Five!” Well,

that is not the official name, but for now we will use it!

First is Daniel Taborda. He is originally from Colombia. He recently graduated

from Oklahoma City University with a Masters in Composition. He is proficient

in many brass instruments, as well as, piano. He is married to Aline originally

from Brazil.

Next is Mike Ragland our amazing drummer/percussionist. Mike is the Chief

Operating Officer at Sooner Medical Companies. I met Mike at Mayfair Heights

UMC. We played together at the church on occasion. Mike plays with different

bands and has recorded original material. He is married to Debbie. Daniel and

Mike are dear friends with whom I enjoyed playing. When I knew we would be

needing musicians for The Village UMC, I immediately contacted Daniel and

Mike. I am very grateful that they said yes!

Now, I am happy to say that I have met two new friends: Judy Horne and Virgil

Brian. You know them well, but I am getting to know them better and they are

a lot of fun to be around! Judy Horne is the Materials Coordinator at Nestle

Purina PetCare Company. She is our keyboardist. Judy has such a passion for

music and our church that is contagious. Virgil Brian is the latest member of

the band. After our first Sunday, Virgil approached Mike, then Elaine remem-

bered he had played at Redemption Church and asked if he played the bass.

He does! We immediately jumped at the opportunity and invited him to play

with us. He has been playing with us and he has added so much to the band’s

sound. Stay tuned: we will be hiring a lead vocalist too.

I feel very fortunate to be able to play with them and to be part of the band. I

enjoy playing the guitar, and it is great to play alongside talented musicians.

God indeed provided when we were in need and sent amazing gifts to our

church. I pray that every Sunday you feel God’s presence through us playing for

the Lord. We enjoy playing together and most importantly, we feel honored to

lead the congregation in worship.

Howdy partners!

Something new is on the horizon; Family Fun Day! Our one-day Vacation Bible School will be

held on Saturday, July 8th, from 10:00am-1:00pm, followed by a cookout with parents!

This will be a western-themed event called “Outlaws of the Kingdom;” so put on your western

wear, invite some friends and come ready for a day of fun.

We're looking for volunteers for our Rotation instructors and Shepherds. Rotation instructors

will teach a Bible lesson and lead a craft. The Shepherds will guide the children to their rota-

tions. We need 3 rotation instructors and 3 more "Shepherds." If you are available and willing

to help (or know anyone who would), please contact me.

We also need grocery-size brown sacks. If you can donate a couple of those, please bring them to

the church before Saturday the 8th.

It will be a rootin'- scootin' time!

Please join us in welcoming Daniel Taborda who has joined the VUMC staff serving as Choir Director!

You may have seen Daniel in the past few weeks as he is also the pianist/saxophonist in the Village Praise

Team in the 11:00 a.m. Sunday service. Composer/Conductor Taborda has a bachelor’s degree in music

composition from Universidad EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia. In 2014, he began studying at OCU to earn a

master’s degree in music composition. In 2015, his field of study expanded to include a double master’s

degree in conducting, and he accomplished his double degree in both areas just this year.

Daniel plays guitar, piano, organ and saxophone, and is now adding flute to this list! Please check out his

website, www.DanielTaborda.com, to read more about this amazing young man. Along with all of this musical

talent, Daniel has a sincere desire to serve and an easy smile. It is all a winning combination, and we are

pleased to have Daniel and his wife, Aline, join us at VUMC!

We also are happy to welcome Jeremy Davis as our new Youth Ministries Coordinator!

Jeremy has just completed his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern Christian University and will soon begin

work on his master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma.

Jeremy has two young daughters who are the joys of his life and will be attending VUMC with him. Interestingly,

Jeremy was a member of the VUMC youth group in the early ‘90’s and has memories of watching the Super

Bowl in the youth room downstairs! He is enthusiastic, warm and friendly, and eager to invest in the lives of

our youth. Please take a moment, introduce yourself to Jeremy, and welcome him to VUMC!

Lighthouse Kidz MusiCamp

MusiCamp is right around the corner! For 2 weeks each summer, children and youth entering grades 2-8 can

have a fun, inspirational experience in music theater at VUMC.

This summer’s musical will be In the Image by Mark Burrows. Quoting Mr. Burrows, “In the Image features a

group of children who have just experienced the story of the Creation. And now they’re starting to wonder

what it really means to be created in the image of God. Through humorous, earnest exploration, the children

discover that being created in the image of God isn’t about physical appearance.”

MusicCamp will be July 10-21, Monday-Friday, 9 to noon, and the performance will be Saturday, July 22, at

1:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Brochures with more details are at the lobby desk, or contact Martha Pendleton at

405-474-4781 or [email protected] . Children and youth don’t have to be members at VUMC to participate;

so let Martha know of neighbors or friends who would like to attend.

A variety of items are needed to make this camp a success. Take a look at the list below and see what you can

bring! There’s a box in the lobby outside of Julie’s office for your donations.

We need the following:

Plastic containers, bottles, hoses

Wooden spoons

Neckties

Fabric

Landscape pictures

Large pictures of people

Recycled materials or “found” objects for musical instruments

Puppets for our “Creation Parade”

It’s not too late to sign up for this 2 week camp; but time is short, so don’t delay.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our Nursery needs rotating volunteers on Sunday mornings in July. Hours are

8:45 a.m.—12:30 p.m. We also have an immediate opening for paid Child Care

Workers to provide care for kids birth - 5 years (occasionally older) on Sunday

mornings and Wednesday nights (about 5 hours per week). Child care workers must

be over 18 years of age with a clear background check. Please consider helping us

take care of the youngest members of our church family. Call the church office to

volunteer or to get more information about the Child Care Worker position.

We still need help filling our vacancies on the Village Connections team. Currently, only 2 dedicated

ladies reach out to our members who need a personal touch from our church. It is so important that none

of these members are overlooked, yet our committee membership is very small and there is almost more

than we can successfully handle. If you feel led to help with this very rewarding service or have questions,

please contact Julie at [email protected] or call 405-751-8116.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the soundboard and Pro-Presenter slide presentation during

worship services on Sundays. Don’t let this intimidate you—training will be provided! Please contact

Peggy Clifton at [email protected] if you could help in any way.

We desperately need a bus driver on Sunday mornings to pick up some of our members who can no

longer drive themselves. Would you please prayerfully consider volunteering for this very meaningful

service? Also, you may not want to drive the bus, but could you help someone who wants to come but

needs a ride? There are several members of our congregation that would love to be here but need

transportation. Contact Julie at [email protected] or 405-751-8116 if you are willing to help.

Village Café needs some temporary help on the 2nd or 3rd Wednesdays of July and August, from

4:30 p.m. until around 7:00 p.m. No experience necessary!! Please volunteer and help us maintain

this important service to our neighbors during the summer months. Contact Julie if you will help at

405-751-8116.

UMW Leadership Meeting

UMW Prime Timers

Our July luncheon will be Thursday, July 13, at Noon.

Everyone is welcome to come! We each bring a dish

to share, whether homemade or not, and we catch up

on what’s happening in the life of the church and in

the lives of each other. After lunch, it’s not unusual

for a card game to break out!

Please plan to join us this month. If nothing else,

you’re guaranteed to have a delicious lunch!

Report from Youth Force

As the fire alarm went off in Methodist hall at OCU on Wednesday morning during Youth

Force week, the sponsors sat outside waiting to see how many of their youth would imme-

diately wake up and come outside! Not all nine churches participating made it outside, but

it was the best alarm test EVER to get everyone awake at the halfway point; the hardest

work day of the week for Youth Force.

All of our youth and adults worked together cutting, trimming and manhandling trees much bigger than

they were, and also working on land that contained poison ivy, heavy metal and steel, trucks, and large farm

equipment. It was a team effort to be remembered.

One of our own youth in God Squad G helped acquire and then celebrate the life of Gillbert the goldfish, the

official Youth Force fish! See his celebration of life at Gillbert Gray Gibbson on his instagram. The Squad gave

him a great life. A crawdad was also a pet in the room for a short time. God Squad G loved their pets this

year!

Thanks to Allison and Cameron Samson, their friend Miriam Ellis, and Collin and Dillon Lee for participating

in a great Youth Force this year! The God Squad leaders bragged about how hard our youth from the Village

worked on their projects.

And thank you to our congregation for the continued support of Youth Force! Philip Brooks

Prayer Concerns Missions Update

We will be gathering school supplies for Johnson

Elementary during the months of July and August!

If you would like to buy supplies, there will be a list

available at the lobby desk of the items most needed.

If you would prefer a monetary donation, please be

sure to note “School Supplies” on your check or
