4Join us for a

Summer of Fun at the 4-h education center at auer Farm!

June 20 –August 19

Our Summer Farm Academy welcomes children from pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade.

What happens at the Farm?

This summer, we’ll explore the natural world, in the barn, in the gardens, and on the farm’s rolling hills and meadows. We’ll take a hayride, create original craft projects, learn about plants and insects, visit the new chickens, goats and calves, and harvest blueberries to make a pie! Older children will learn about the food system, pick basil to make a pizza, and use sheep wool to create a unique piece of art.

When is it happening?

Children come for one week or more. (Each week is unique.) It’s a perfect mix of learning and fun, from June 20th through August 19th.

Two groups are now forming:

Farm Explorers (pre-K through entering 2nd grade)

9 am – 12 Noon $150/week

Junior Farmers (Entering 3rd through entering 6th grade)

9 am – 3 pm $250/week

Reduced rates for siblings are available, and ask about our scholarships.

For more information, or to register:• by phone: 860 242-7144, Ext. 10• by email: [email protected]

Space is limited, so please register early!

SUMMER FARM ACADEMY AD Will run the weeks of 3/15 and 3/22 [DUE Friday, 3/11, by 11]

Both ads are color, vertical, full page: 10” high and 7.25” wide. They would like the ad in pdf file (or InDesign formats are also o.k.)The ad should be sent to [email protected] and I left her phone number at the office! Sorry—Just looked on line and I’m not seeing the number I called… BIRDING ADI think using the brochure cover photo would be good. The copy should only list the two remaining sessions, March 26 and April 30.All the copy on the right inside page of the brochure is fine to use, but I would omit the last paragraph: “Register for one….etc.” since there are only two left. Also, please leave out the bolded line after the last workshop “Birds in Spring” which reads: “We encourage….”An abbreviated registration form is fine. It should read (similar to bro-chure copy):

Wetland Birds Saturday, March 26, 2011• 9-11am

What makes a wetland and why do some birds prefer this habitat? Our meadows and marshes are home to red-winged blackbirds, terns, wrens, yellow warblers and tree swallows. We’ll learn which birds we’ll find there, and why some birds only live in wetland areas.

Birds in Spring Saturday, April 30, 2011 • 9-11am

Why do people like to watch birds? Where do we look for them, and how can we identify them? Why do they sing? We’ll learn about how birds build nests, what different materials they use, and about a bird’s life cycle.

Birdingfor K — 3rd Graders

To register, send your child’s name, age, workshop date, and payment to:

Please call for more information at 860 242-7144, Ext. 10

or email us at [email protected]

• Come and explore Auer Farm’s extensive bird habitats using our child-friendly binoculars.

• Look at the diverse habitats of the Farm’s birds, walk the hills and meadows seeking native species. Return to the classroom to talk about our discoveries.

• Enjoy a special creative project such as nest-making, birdhouse design or diorama construction. Each child’s birding journal records the day’s findings.

Judy

Sometimes — although not often — I am left speechless. For instance, I am left speechless whenever I see someone who absolutely should not be wearing a tube top wearing a tube top, and I am left speechless when another driver bolts out in front of me only to achieve no more than 21.3 miles per hour for the next five miles in a no-passing zone. I am left speechless by people having loud conversations into cell phone headsets I cannot see, and just the other day I was left speechless watching a woman transfer all the ripe strawberries from two plastic con-tainers into one, which she then bought, leaving the other behind. When I told my husband I was writing about things that leave me speechless, he was…well, speechless — but after staring at me for a minute or two, he finally said, “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen you speechless.” Then wanted to know where they sell tube tops.
