4 Living in peaceWell, winter is approaching fast. The chill in the air first thing in the morning and again in the evenings is proof enough! As we walk through the streets of our beautiful village, the leaves falling to the ground are a reminder of what’s to come - stock up on your fire wood, it’s going to be chilly.

Our recent spates of loadshedding have forced many of us to arrange our lives around electricity! Please remember that we are supplied by Tshwane and not Eskom so all radio and TV announcements apply to Eskom clients only. Thanks go to the ILA as well as our useful Facebook page for keeping us updated. You can however bookmark the following link to keep track of our schedule and check it regularly as it can change at any time: http://www.tshwane.gov.za/…/Public…/Pages/Load-Shedding.aspx

Here are some useful tips to minimise inconvenience in the event of load shedding...

Think about communication: Ensure your cellphone is always fully charged when power is available.

Think about transport: Ensure your vehicle (car, bakkie, motorcycle, etc) always has fuel in the tank because petrol stations cannot pump fuel during power outages.

Think about cash: Ensure you have enough cash because ATMs cannot operate without electricity.

Think about access, security and safety: Release automatic electric garage door mechanisms and electric security gates so you can gain access to your property during a power outage and to avoid being locked out of or in your home. Keep temporary lighting readily available, e.g. battery-powered torches and candles. Make sure you put these items in places where they will be easy to find in the dark. Keep a torch (with fresh batteries) by your bedside at all times. Get a small LP gas lamp, as it gives good quality lighting for a large area.

‘Till next month

6 You said itThe opinions expressed in this readers’ column are not necessarily shared by the publisher of the Irene Town Crier. Readers’ views can be e-mailed to [email protected].

Dear Tracey and members/friends of Irene - The Village

Heartfelt thank you to those who responded to my plea for the young lad admitted to Lyttelton Manor High School, Grade 8. The gracious and gener-ous donations have assisted him and his family enormously. He has suffi-cient summer khaki uniforms to last a year or two, growth factor permitting of course. Also a brand spanking new pair of school shoes, which he so proudly donned the very next day of their delivery. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

With the financial donations we are able to purchase the tie and probably a new jersey. We will limp along with the other necessities when they arise. But it certainly still leaves me flabbergasted that Manor no longer has a second hand uniform shop. Anybody out there with kids at Manor willing to restart and run with this very necessary part of a school's life-blood? My gosh, my two girls (and thereby me) survived almost entirely on the willing parents to donate and/or receive a percentage on second hand shop sales. What on earth happens to all those items of uniform that are still far too good to toss or worse, collect cobwebs and fish moths in the deep, dark departments of one's cupboards. We will be most willing to relieve you of, say, the blue school blazer. Still on the urgent list: Manor sport bag and shorts and vest. Manor track suit. Blazer. He has managed to find himself in the school hur-dles and high jump, and very chuffed he is with these accomplishments, so a good second hand pair of running shoes/sport shoes would not go amiss either. Size 6.

Thank you, once again, to those kind folk who responded. I am still over-whelmed with the kindness of our Irene Village. And to all those who help in all the other spheres of the Village requests, I applaud you. Give yourselves a great big pat on the back. Nothing makes one feel better than doing some good for another less privileged than ourselves. You are good people and I love living amongst you.

See you on the Oval maybe, with your dogs and of course, your doggy bags/poop-scoopers. Ciao for now.

With gratitudeRos xx

S ing On!In 2013, Irene Dramatic Society produced the comedy Play On!

This play brought to life all the perils and pitfalls of performing theatre productions with non-professional playwrights. Especially when done with more pride than professionalism; when performed by an amateur company pleading for our pity while their prayers to St Genesius went

unanswered. And audiences loved it.

St Genesius is the patron saint of actors, clowns, musicians and tor-ture

victims. Now the spirit of St Genesius returns for the sequel, Sing On!

We see the same group of put upon actors, with the same playwright, trying to perform a musical written for them by her nephew, Monte.

They are doing this to themselves to get a R10 000 grant which is needed to

save their beloved theatre group.

Join us, Irene Dramatic Society, for more comedy, more disaster and more actors playing actors playing multiple parts at almost the same time. You'll laugh, you'll laugh some more and then you'll cry because

you're laughing so much.

Sing On! is written by Rick Abbot and directed by Anne Cary.

Dear Residents and ILA Members

Irene is a lovely to place to live with more than just beautiful homes; large, rambling gardens and gorgeous trees, it’s a place that has a sense of community that is so lacking in many surrounding suburbs and estates. Community is about knowing and caring about your neighbour or standing together when faced with challenges or feeling like you belong. Our village has something that cannot be bought or artificially instilled in its residents because it’s a result of many years of history, watching things grow and change and adapt but all the while remaining connected and concerned about one another. This month’s communication is about that need for community in our village.

Security

The ILA in partnership with EBS Security continues to deliver security to the residents and families in the village with great success. Should you not be a contributing member of the ILA, please make contact with Jan Swanepoel at 083 6076600 to join in standing together in securing our homes and our village.

Members are reminded to please change their lock box codes on a regular basis to ensure that any potential security breach is averted in addition to being aware of the manpower implications of consistent overactive alarms. Should alarms be faulty please could they be attended to with urgency to ensure that true emergencies receive the immediate attention that they deserve?

Moving or renting

We would request that members who are moving out of the village provide as much notice as possible of their move, if possible with the contact details of the estate agent or new buyer, in order for the ILA to be able to manage mem-bership and continue to provide security in the village. New owners/tenants are not always informed of the security provided by the ILA and the processes followed in the village. This leads to security risks and invalid membership data. Please ensure that your estate agent informs the new buyer of the

Page 13: Town Crier April 15

security arrangements and associated costs and, if possible, provides both the ILA and the new buyer with contact details. This will ensure a smooth transition that leaves everyone secure and unexposed on taking occupation.

Engaging with EBS Guards

EBS Security employs our guards and the services they provide are contractually agreed to with the ILA and are subject to a service level agreement and a set of standard operating procedures. The guards only accept instructions from EBS management and will therefore politely decline any requests or demands that are contrary to the standard operating procedures. Should you have any issue, request or suggestion to make in this regard, kindly take them up with the Jan Swanepoel, the ILA Village Manager. No abuse of the guards will be tolerated. Please also note that the guards are not allowed to live in Irene or to undertake any employment on their off days. Any solicitations for food, loans, tips or anything of this nature should be reported to Jan. Our relationship with the guards should be friendly and cordial and should not become overly familiar. We have residents who are very generous in providing food and drinks for the guards from time to time and this is much appreciated and welcomed by the guards and the ILA.

ILA signage

Should any member not have an ILA sign on their property, please contact Alyson on 072 714 3740 to arrange delivery of a new sign.

Shooting birds

Someone is shooting our birdlife with a pellet or shotgun! These are mainly drive-by shootings. Several hadedas have been found in the village, shot dead or seriously injured. One had a leg shot off and another had to be euthanased - it had been shot in the neck and could barely breath! Doves have also been found shot dead in the Concentration Camp cemetery.

Residents witnessing the shooting of birds, should immediately call Jan Swanepoel with a description of the perperator and Reg No. of the vehicle. If the bird is alive, please place it in a box and we will call Nick, a Free Me vol-unteer, to take the bird to their clinic.

Residents are reminded that it is an offence to shoot any wild bird or wild animal.

13

Page 14: Town Crier April 15

Lost animals

Once again we appeal to all residents to be aware that the ILA cannot accom-modate lost animals at the Oval. Please ensure that all pets are identifiable and that some contact details are available on their collars in order to return them home where they belong.

Electrical usage

It has come to our attention that several residents are experiencing an increase in electricity usage due to the installation of the Smart meters. Should this be the case, please contact Jan so that we are able to clarify the matter with the relevant authorities.

ILA AGM

The AGM will be held on Wed 13 May at 19h30, at Irene Primary School. Please see the separate notice in this issue, for details. All are welcome to attend this important meeting.

Winter

The evenings are definitely much colder now! Donations of hot chocolate, coffee, tea, creamer and sugar would be much appreciated, to help keep our guards warm during the night shift. Items may be delivered to Dawie, EBS Manager, at The Oval

We thank you for your loyal support and for making our village the wonderful place that it is.

18 Tee up, golf is good! It’s one of a few ball games that doesn’t require a standardised playing area and 2016 will be the first year that golf is included in the Olympics – it’s finally getting recognised as an official sport.

Golfers around the globe would agree that the game is demanding, requir-ing physical exertion and co-ordination. Athletic ability, strength, endurance, strategy and mental toughness are the attributes every good golfer learns. In addition to this, the significant health and wellness benefits are overwhelm-ingly evident.

With the equivalent of walking 18 holes being an 8 km walk or a 5 to 6 km run, walking the golf course across various terrains can burn up to 1 500 calories*. In addition to this, the average golfer will exceed 10 000 steps in a round which meets the recommended guidelines for daily exercise. Walking an 18 hole course three to five times a week will give you the optimal exer-cise needed for your heart, reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and if you pull your clubs along or carry them, you’ll burn even more calories. Any regular player can use golf to help them stay fit, improve muscle tone and endurance as well as lose weight and body fat. Without realising it, your fun morning or afternoon in a beautiful setting such as Woodhill, is helping you keep your body in optimal shape.

Page 19: Town Crier April 15

Of course, let’s not ignore or forget the mental fitness golf provides. A round with a group of friends is a great way to keep in touch, reducing stress whilst enjoying an open and natural environment and of course, creating a sense of community. Participating in golf days allows you the opportunity to meet new people and broaden your contact base.

Another notable study conducted by the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden)** found that the death rate for golfers is 40% less than of other people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status. This equates to a 5 year increase in life expectancy for regular golfers.

Now that we’ve established that getting in shape is fun and easy to do if you actively play golf, remember to treat it as you would any other sport. A proper warm-up is key and eating healthy to keep your body mentally and physically sharp for each shot is a must. Get out onto your beautiful course – walking 9 or 18 holes helps oxygen-ate the body, improve your posture and renew your spirit – all the things any good sport gives you!

So to all you avid golfers, make sure you drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep and practice, practice, practice because golf is teeing up to be the next big sport.

*Research conducted by Neil Wolkodoff of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences (Denver, Colo.) was used to show roughly how many calories were burned playing an aver-age 9-hole golf course. According to the article golfers who walk and carry their own bag burn 721 calories, golfers using a pull cart burn 718 calories, golfers walking with a caddie burn 613 calories and golfers riding in a golf cart burn 411 calories on average. **This study was published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports and is based on data compiled from studying 300,000 Swedish golfers.

Interesting facts about the Health benefits of golf

The World Golf Foundation and Golf 20/20 commissioned The Walker Research Group

to identify and report on the body of literature pertaining to the health and wellness benefits of golf participation.

Key Findings – Health Related Benefits:

* A walked 18-hole round, carrying a bag or using a hand/pull cart, isapproximately equal to a 5-mile walk.

* The total caloric expenditure for an 18-hole round is approximately 2,000 calories for walking while carrying clubs and 1,300 calories

when riding in a cart.

* Since walking is biomechanically more efficient than running, playing an 18-hole round of golf walking is roughly equivalent to a 3.5 to 4-mile

run.

* When walking 18-holes of golf, blood glucose levels fall by up to 20% for the young, 10% for the middle-aged and 30% for the elderly

players, and body weight is slightly reduced for all groups.

* Repeated golf practice enhances balance control and confidence among all age ranges.

* Older golfers tend to have better static and dynamic balance control and confidence than non-golfing older, healthy adults.

* Regardless of handicap, sex, or course played, golfers exceed 10,000 steps during a typical round of golf – which meets the guideline

for exercise recommended by most medical and clinical physicians.

25Blooming beautifulWe all know that first impressions last and your garden is no different. It’s the first feature of your home that visitors see and it’s a reflection of you. Beautiful gardens are the envy of neighbours. They help uplift the look and feel of a street and they can even contribute towards ensuring your property value continues to rise. Whether you own the home you live in or if you are lucky enough to enjoy renting a home in our beautiful village, please remember that your garden is an extension of your home and it’s a feature that deserves attention.

As we head into Autumn, one should start thinking about planting winter flowering bulbs. Visit your local garden centre and find out about what would work best for your garden. Namaqualand daisies, sweet peas, poppies, primula, foxgloves, hollyhock and larkspur are a few beautiful options.

Remember to protect your seedlings from birds by covering them with plastic netting or chicken mess if necessary. Be wary of planting the same seedlings into the same beds every year as this can cause soil borne fungal disease and will deplete the soil of nutrients.

Speaking of soil, be sure to nurture yours with dark compost in preparation for the cooler months ahead.

Bulbs should be planted as soon as the ground starts cooling down. Big bulbs can be planted around 20cm deep and small bulbs around 12cm deep. Try to leave the label on the bulb so that you can differentiate between the different flowers as they grow. If you are going to fertilise, never mix the fertilizer in the planting hole as it will burn the roots.

As Autumn progresses, gather fallen leaves, grass clippings and shredded pruning’s to add to your compost heap. Remember to turn the heap periodically to allow air to circulate, feed the organisms and decompose the organic matter quickly.

And last but not least, before the weather really cools down, clean out your water features. Check that your pump is clean and in good condition. A beau-tiful water feature is an extension of your garden and one of the aspects that most visitors will be drawn to.
