PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 245 - 15 Jan 2000 The use of antiasthmatics increased markedly in Northern Ireland from 1980 to 1997, report investigators in that country. According to their drug- utilisation analysis, the use of antiasthmatics increased from 19.84 defined daily doses (DDDs) per 1000 head of population per day in 1980 to 84.07 DDDs/1000/day in 1997. This represents an increase of > 300%, note the investigators. Most of the rise in the use of antiasthmatics was attributable to an increase in the prescribing of selective β2-agonists and inhaled glucocorticoids. Dispensing of selective β2-agonists increased almost 4-fold (from 12.7 DDDs/1000/day in 1980 to 44.9 DDDs/1000/day in 1997) while dispensing of inhaled glucocorticoids increased nearly 25-fold (from 1.3 to 31.3 DDDs/1000/day, respectively). The investigators also noted that there was a trend towards increased use of dry powder inhalers in recent years. Bell HM, et al. Changing profile in the use of anti-asthma drugs.
