The dynamics of change lies all around us as the college enters itssecond century. Of all the elements that higher education requires, thedirection we want the institution to pursue will be influenced by theimpact of change. The increasing economic distress our nation faceshas seen rapidly rising college costs. This is a major public policyissue. Morris College is well aware of the fact that individual familiesare struggling financially as they cope with rising personal debt. Weknow that our students have very limited resources. So, we realizethat increased revenue cannot come from sharply increased tuitionand fees. It will have to come, as it has for the past 100 years, from

Baptist family, alumni, friends of the college, corporations and foundations. In the dynamics of change is the historic event which took place in Washington, DC onTuesday, January 20, 2009. America witnessed its first African-American being sworn in asPresident of these United States. Speaking of the challenges before us, President Obama, nearthe end of his inaugural address, said:

“What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition,on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, sodefining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.”

This “new era of responsibility” is one to which we are inevitably drawn, for it is our passportto an even greater and more glorious Morris College. Surely, as members of the BaptistEducational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina and other members of the Baptistfamily, alumni and friends, we have a duty to this great institution. This change can only beaccelerated by our awareness of the responsibilities we have to this our college and almamater. Such awareness will bring forth a passion that enlivens the very basis of our foundingand purpose. From innovative measures to tackle the problems of running a college in a cost-effectivemanner, to preventive maintenance of physical facilities, to making adjustments inorganizational structures, to working effectively to maintain a balanced budget, to providinga high quality educational program, to continuing the college’s mission of offering anaffordable, cost-effective way for students to pursue higher education, we, at Morris College, have always carried a sense of responsibility and humility toward the task of educatingtoday’s students. We have been responsible even more with the resources you continue toprovide. Thank you so much for changing lives and changing the world with the support you give.Allow me to close by paraphrasing the concluding words of our newly elected president:“...with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth Morris Collegeand delivered it safely, financially stronger, and academically wealthier to futuregenerations.”

College Welcomes New Food Service Management

The New Year has ushered in many new changes and for Morris College one of the most obvious changesappears when you walk into Daniels Dining Hall. With an array of signs strategically placed throughout thefacility, the message is clear that the College has welcomed a new food service company. As described by President Richardson, the formula for student satisfaction includes, “…clean and safefacilities; adequate heating and cooling; hot and cold water; and fulfilling meal services.” There’s no doubtthat the Millennium Café, a component of Perkins Management Services Company, Incorporated, sufficientlyadds to the equation.

The Perkins Difference A rarity in the industry, the Perkins Management Services Company, Incorporated is a solely owned andoperated minority food service company founded by Mr. Nicholas M. Perkins. Mrs. Barbara Sessionserves as the college’s on-site Food Services Director. No different from the Morris College Family concept embraced by many, Perkins Management is muchthe same. The dynamic duo of Perkins and Session radiates not only with their “passion for food,” but theircommitment to ensure they provide Morris College with “the best in food service management and quality inthe variety of food available.” “We aim to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers, and webelieve that Morris College and its students deserve nothing less than our best,” Perkins eagerly states. “Apart of our vision is to consistently deliver service-oriented, innovative, and quality managed services.”

Something for Everyone True to its vision, the Millennium Café offers a wide variety of nutritional food choices from Traditions toNick’s Deli and Fresh-Off-The-Grill. The jam-packed spread of food in these concepts is the company’sapproach to meeting the tastes of those who desire anything from meatloaf or fish to a sub sandwich or thetraditional cheeseburger or hotdog. Other concepts created to appeal to the masses include Beginningswith its wide range of cereals and custom made waffles; Salad Sensations which aims to suit veggiefixations; and Sweet Street Desserts to satisfy the “sweet tooth” with baked goods including daily assortmentsof cakes, cookies, and pies.

Beyond the Palate While Perkins Management has established itself as a benchmark for food service management companies,it also seeks to impact students through its Beyond the Palate initiative. “We want our influence to gobeyond the food we serve,” Perkins said. “The Beyond the Palate program is our way to take an integralpart in the success of students by investing in them through providing scholarships and other programs.”

The decision to work with Perkins Management Services Company, Incorporated follows the December2008 departure of Quality Cuisine. “For more than thirty years, Mr. Walter G. Smith, Quality Cuisine Owner, and his staff provided exceptional service to the college, and we have greatly appreciated the servicesrendered and the level of support displayed,” says President Richardson.

The congregation’s membership and influencegrew under his leadership and a new sanctuary and Christian education building were erected. 20 Morris College UPDATE

Morris College salutes the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, along with the entire Baptist family, for their generous and magnanimous contributions.

This financial report reflects their financial gifts given, during 2008,in commemoration of the college’s 100th anniversary.

A total of $952,233.84 was given.

The college also received contributions from churches, pastors, organizations and others beyond the SouthCarolina Baptist circle. For example, during the Special Centennial Year Convocation, held in October of 2008,

Dr. Charles G. Adams, Senior Pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, and speaker forthe occasion, presented to the President of Morris College a $50,000 gift on behalf of his congregation.

We are indeed grateful to them and all of our supporters. The college’s 2009 Fall Newsletter will render a more detailed financial report

of the 2008-09 fiscal year which will include all donors.

A special thank you to Dr. Marion H. Newton and Dr. Ralph W. Canty, Sr. for serving so vibrantlyas drive directors. This drive was graciously endorsed and supported by the late Dr. Lewis P. Graham, Sr.,

then President of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina andDr. Luns C. Richardson, President of Morris College.

After Dr. Graham’s sudden passing on April 20, 2008, Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy, our newly elected president, stepped up to the plate and kept the momentum going.

To all of these fine Baptist leaders, we offer our sincere appreciation.

As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said,“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”

Your thoughtful support enables the college to continue building “youth for the future”as we enlighten their minds and enrich their lives.

Again, thank you for supporting the 2008 Centennial.

This is a big week for the MorrisCollege men’s basketball team. The Hornets, who stand at 7-6 onthe season, travel to face NCAADivision I opponent CharlestonSouthern University today beforereturning home Thursday for ameeting with one of the top teamsin NAIA Division I, Mountain StateUniversity. Morris broke above the .500mark for the first time this seasonon Saturday with their fourth-straight win, a 69-66 victory overVoorhees College at Morris’Garrick-Boykin HumanDevelopment Center. “All of our weeks are big whenwe play, but with Division ICharleston Southern, it means moreto us than the others did,” saidMorris head coach ClarenceHouck. “All the games mean a lotto us, but we’re preparing a littleharder for these because it’s aDivision I team and Mountain Statebeing ranked No. 3 in the nation inNAIA. We’re working harder, butwe’ll prepare for them just like weprepare for any of the other games. “It would mean a lot to us,”Houck added. “All the wins mean alot to us, but winning this one wouldbe one above the others, so we’dlove to win it.” Charleston Southern enterstonight’s contest at 5-13 having lostits last 10 games going back to a101-49 win over Covenant College. The young Buccaneers are led bysophomore guard Jamarco Warren, who is averaging 20.1 points pergame and four 3-pointers a game.

He is third in the Big SouthConference in total scoring, andsecond in the conference in 3-pointfield goal percentage. A pair of freshmen also figuresheavily into the Bucs’ game plan.Omar Carter is second on the teamin scoring, with 11.9 points pergame. He’s grabbing 7.1 rebounds,as well, second on the team tofreshman forward Kelvin Martin, who is averaging 7.7 boards. Morris will counter with a veteranbackcourt, led by senior point guardChristopher Owens, who said theteam has come together since theholiday break after the playersrenewed their focus on playing as ateam, as opposed to playing asindividuals. “Last year, we had a lot ofindividuals, but we’ve come a long, long way,” said Owens, who leadsthe team in scoring with 20.00points per game and is first in theNAIA in 3-point field goals with4.08 per game. “That’s kind of howthis season started, as well, and werealized that that’s not going towork out this year. “Over the break, we all calledeach other and talked about whatwe needed to do when we gotback. Everybody took it in, took it toheart.” Owens shoots 41 percent fromthe field and 41 percent from 3-point land, and is the team’s assistsleader, as well, with 3.38 per game. One of his favorite go-to guys issenior guard Nathaniel Thomas, who leads the team with 7.31rebounds per game, along with15.54 points. Senior guard JustinBeaufort averages 10.77 points pergame. The Hornets will also benefitfrom solid play in the post. Juniorforward Randall James leads NAIA

Division I with 4.48 blockedshots per game to go withhis 11 points, and theHornets as a team aresecond in the nation in thatcategory with 7.46 pergame. Mountain State, rankedNo. 3 among NAIADivision I teams, is 16-2 onthe season. The Cougarsdefeated Morris 105-48earlier this season. Like last year, however,Houck is counting onshowing the Cougars adifferent look the secondtime around. MSU defeatedMorris 101-69 at home lastseason, but had to hold onfor dear life to gain an 88-81 victory at Morris. “We’re playing well now,and the way the guys havegelled together, they’replaying more as a team nowand know their respectiveroles as team players,”Houck said. “We showedthem a different look whenthey came here (lastseason), and we’re going todo the same thing this time.Last year was our first timeplaying them, and theycaught us off-guard a littlebit. We’re looking to returnthe favor.”
