Important News: Back to School January 10th, 2011 January 21st, 2011 there will be school Talent Show The annual ISC Talent Show, hosted by the National Honor Society, will be held February 26th in the evening. Auditions will take place at ISC, January 25-27 from 2 to 4 pm. Library Donation Program Many people have expressed an interest in donating a book to the ISC library to help restore the collection after the loss of so many books. I have created a list of needed books to replace some of these lost books. Here’s what to do if you want to purchase a book for the library. 1. Go to the *main office* to see the list of books needed for the library. 2. Choose the book you would like to purchase. 3. Give Camille the money to purchase the book (exact change please) 4. Write your name neatly on the list next to the book you purchase. We will place a bookplate with “Donated by YOUR NAME” in the book when it arrives. Thank you so much for your support of the ISC Library. April Johnson, Librarian

Tomas Recovery Committee’s Progress Report December 16, 2010

We have some great news for you!!! To this date, the school has received generous donations from parents and community members at large for ANG 134,412 including an important grant of US$ 50,000 from the Office of Overseas Schools, U.S. Department of State, in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General in Curacao. We thank all those donors whose contributions will help in the ISC’s flooding recovery. Today, we drew the winner’s lucky number of the iPad! The winner is Family Flickinger!!! Congratulations to the Flickingers! Thank you to all students and parents who contributed in the selling of the raffle tickets. Special thanks to Boolchand’s who kindly donated this wonderful gadget as a prize! Tomorrow, we will have a pizza party for K-5A! Congrats to all students in K-5A who sold the most raffle tickets in the entire school!!!! Way to go! We estimate additional ANG 12,000 to go to the Tomas Recovery Fund. This additional amount is thanks to the raffle we just had today! Again, thanks to Boolchand’s, Mrs. Myriam Abady for coordinating this raffle and all students who sold their tickets!!! Remember! EVERY GUILDER counts!!! It could be ANG 25 or ANG 2,500! Have you made your contributions yet? Stay tuned for a “School-wide Father Son Cook Out and Camping” School Fundraising activity at Landhuis Pannekoek… More info will be sent to you in January!!! An after Tomas update from the Operations & Facilities Manager: Library: The library floor was cleaned –scraped from the old carpet/s debris- the original tiles have been exposed. 35 wooden shelves were treated with Microban for mold and will be painted during the Holiday break. K-3: In K-3 all the wood paneling was removed one meter from the floor, the walls took some time to dry, they were plastered where needed. Walls were sealed and painted, we had to fill the borders of the floors with cement since they were filled with wood –in order to attach the wall paneling- we had all the rotten wood removed and had to fill the border with cement. Some tiles cracked and are being replaced. K-3 will be done this week. K-3 toilets: The K-3 restroom is closed until further notice.

K5B: In K-5B the wooden cubbies that were attached to the walls were removed and treated with Microban, machine sanded and painted with oil paint. The walls were repaired where cracked or where the paint peeled off. The whole classroom got a new coat of paint, the classroom was operational today. 2B: is still pending for repairs, the gypsum boards need to be replaced. This will be done over the Holiday break. Band room: The wooden raisers in the band room were dismantled because they had mold, a dehumidifier has been placed in that classroom since there still is a lot of moisture in the classroom, the concrete floor is exposed after the carpet was removed, pending on floor decision. K-4’s: Dehumidifiers were also placed in both K-4 rooms since the walls were retaining moisture however no signs of mold. Music room: The music room has a rug on the floor tiles that were exposed after the carpet was removed, pending on floor decision. IT office: The IT office has tiles exposed after the carpet was removed, pending on floor decision. Teacher’s room: The concrete floor is exposed pending on floor decision.

Happy Holidays to you all and best wishes for 2011!

Schottegatweg O.100 Zeelandia Curaçao, N.A. Tel 599-9-462 1508 Fax 599-9-462 1509 E:[email protected] International School Curaçao Willemstad, December 16, 2010 PROGRESS REPORT ISC STORM WATER PLAN. Introduction On September 20, 2010, ISC had contact with D.O.W. to express their worries about the drainage of the school area when heavy rainfall occurs. On November 2, when hurricane Tomàs passed, 35 rooms flooded. The water level inside the school was 70 cm. In Biesheuvel 235 mm rainfall was recorded. For ISC a reason to take action and consulting MIC. Setting up a Storm Water Plan, not only is a necessity within the property area, but also up- and downstream of the school. A Storm Water Plan with adequate solutions to approach the authorities is necessary to convince the authorities that the problems which did occur, is mostly out of the influence of the ISC her selves. Upstream and downstream adjustments, in combination with adjustments at the school’s property can set up Risk Analyses of flooding the area. The Storm water Plan is also a necessary tool to plan further remodelling, extension, demodulation of the school’s property. Based on the plan MIC, can set up a short term action plan and a long term action plan. Funding can be planned based on action which need to be in place to avoid flooding problems in the near future and/or on the longer term action plan. M.I.C. will come up with a short term action plan and long term action plan, for the school area and the up- and downstream areas After that D.O.W. can be appointed to take action on these proposals and recommendations. Progress Report. On December 4, there was again heavy rainfall. During this rainfall MIC visited the school and the surrounding area, to see how the existing system is working and made photographs. Last week an inventory of the existing data and a field survey of the school area, the upstream area and the downstream area, was done. In the first place the field survey was concentrated on the up- and downstream area and the Elementary Middle School and Kindergarten. The existing details of the infrastructure and buildings are collected. All this information is put in a drawing (see

attachment drawing) and gives already, a good idea of the existing water drainage system. The rain, in the drain area, is gathered in the lowest parts of this area. These lowest parts are lower than 2 meter + SEA-LEVEL. The Elementary Middle School and Kindergarten is lying in one of these areas. The other two are lying, on the north side, along the Magrietlaan. These areas cannot drain naturally to the Schottegat and are not connected with each other. Therefore an outlet was created at the Wilhelminalaan and at the Magrietlaan. The outlet in the Wilhelminalaan exists of 5 PVC pipes with a diameter of 300 mm.

The outlet in the Magrietlaan is a bridge, 8m wide and 1.5m high.

After the rain, 6th December During the rain, 4th December At the Elementary Middle School and Kindergarten, several constructions are made for passing rainwater from the Koninginnelaan to the area below 2 meter + SEA-LEVEL.

Both pictures at the border of the playground Kindergarten During the field survey, on the 4th of December, while it was raining, was observed, that the water level in the channel along the Wilhelminalaan, where the PVC outlet is made, was higher than the water level in the area below 2 meter + SEA-LEVEL, on the other side of the road. So the outlet is functioning as an inlet for this area, when heavy rains fall. Prior to this event DOW dug a trench between GEMS and the Elementary Middle School and Kindergarten. This trench was functioning well.

Trench between ISC and GEMS during rainfall The outlet in the Magrietlaan was function well, but can use some maintenance. The constructions made for passing rainwater at the Elementary Middle School and Kindergarten was also functioning well. It is evident that the outlet in the Wilhelminalaan is not sufficient and probably positioned at a wrong location. Therefore we strongly suggest building a new, additional outlet in the Magrietlaan, next to CEMS. Furthermore we suggest connecting all areas under 2 meter + SEA-LEVEL. And last but not least, we recommend that rainwater coming from the Koninginnelaan and running through the Elementary Middle School and Kindergarten, will be diverted. At the moment we are looking into the water drainage of the High School, making a 3D model and making storm water calculations of the drain area. After the holidays, in January, a concept plan will be presented to ISC. Attachment : Storm Water Plan Maps
