The University of Sfax, Tunisia

The University of Sfax is located 270 km to the South of Tunis, Tunisia. Sfax, the city of olives, was founded in AD 849 (Islamic-Aghlabit) on the ruins of SYPHAX (Berber), and of Thaenae and Taparura (Roman).

The University of Sfax was created in 1986, but the first premises date back to 1974 with 3 institutions. The university has lived since its inception a major change in the number of students, lecturers and quality of education. It is living today a new era of major development and reformation. The University of Sfax offers a variety of bachelor, master, doctoral degrees in several areas:

1. Medical sciences and health

2. Economic sciences and management

3. Languages, literature, human and social sciences

4. Laws and legal sciences

5. Arts and music

6. Biotechnology and environmental sciences

7. Physical sciences and engineering

The 31 year old higher-education organization has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students’ academic record and grades. International students can also apply for enrollment. The admission rate does not exceed 10% which makes the university the most selective in Tunisia. The university provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, sport facilities and/or activities, exchange programs to study abroad, as well as administrative services.

The University of Sfax offers a vibrant ecosystem that nurtures and encourages innovation and entrepreneurship. In 2006, the university has created the Entrepreneurship and Placement University Centre (EPUC) in order to improve the entrepreneurial dynamic of the region.

EPUC has three main missions: - Promote employment of the universitygraduates- Promote entrepreneurship culture- Promote the valorization of researchefforts and scientific results

In 2012, the university has also created the Technology Transfer Office. It aims at developing and disseminating the culture of technology and knowledge transfer in order to improve the visibility and utility of research

results and projects. The aim is also to exploit research results through partnerships by strengthening the number of data repositories and their management.

In 2016, the University of Sfax has also created the Center for Careers and Certification of Competences (4C). The center prepares and guides graduate students to facilitate their integration into the labor market. It also tends to play the role of the preferred partner for any company wishing to recruit a particular professional who has obtained a university degree but has not yet accumulated a confirmed experience. The university 4C is the link between the student and the company. It also helps to certify know-hows in order to increase chances of

companies by strengthening and enhancing the professional qualifications of their employees.

120 startups were created since 2005.

UNIV-Expo

Since 1999, the Univexpo is the official annual exhibition organized by the University of Sfax. Participation is open to all Tunisian academic institutions, research centers, laboratories and national and international academic and industrial partners of the university. The event also allows new students applying for enrollment to clarify and rationalize their choices by contacting the directors of the university institutions and schools. They find onsite an orientation unit which answers their questions and concerns.

INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

A great effort in research output has been made at the University of Sfax:- More than 103 patents based on both technological development and biological researchhave been delivered between 2011 and 2018.- Around 1280 papers have been published in international indexed journals and morethan 430 papers in non-indexed journals in 2016.
