My message is one of thanks. 2016 began as a year with challenges, changes and excitement. Every new president is responsible for planning a year of events, an annual fundraiser, promoting

community involvement and club visibility, increasing club membership and a myriad of other duties. The president is guided by club by-laws, supported by district and state personnel, but there is no step-by-step manual to follow. So you surround yourself with wonderful people who share the same vision and principles of conservative Republican policies. I applaud the club’s executive board, our wonderful members and friends, who unselfishly volunteer their time and treasures, who attend and support us and our events! This year we’re also excited to have the support of our first intern, Alex Galvan, who works with the executive board and who is building our website. The website will help us reach out to the public using social media in a new way, to promote Republican candidates and to keep club members informed. In closing, I want to thank the Republican Party of Walker Party for inviting us to collaborate with them in putting out this newsletter. On to win in November!

A “standing room only” crowd came out to meet the City Council candidates running for the “At Large Position 1” and to hear from the runoff candidates who will face-off in the May 24th election. No one would have guessed having such a high turnout following early morning severe thunderstorms and rain totals of historical levels. We thank the community and the faithful Republican supporters who attended the April 18th meeting, sponsored by the Walker County Republican Women. The public heard from the following candidates, in their respective races.City Council At Large Position 1: John S. Republicans from each precinct of Walker County gathered for their respective Precinct Conventions at the Walker County Storm Shelter Auditorium on March 10, 2016. Each of the precincts elected delegates to the County Convention, and a few precincts adopted resolutions for submission at the County Convention.

The Republican Party County Convention was held on March 19, 2016 at the Walker County Storm Shelter Auditorium. Linda McKenzie, chair of the party, served as temporary chair and Judge Tracy Sorensen was elected permanent chair of the convention. Other officers at the convention were Stephanie Fors-Secretary, Earl Carter-Parliamentarian, and Mike Countz-Sergeant-at-Arms. Kudos to the Walker County Republican Women who provided delicious refreshments to participants. Refreshments included fruit, cookies, donuts, kolaches, water, coffee, juices, and other items. Also, thanks to Brian Aldaco and Megan Chapa for welcoming and signing in the delegates to the convention.

The main order of business for the convention was the election of 25 delegates and 2 alternates to the State Convention. Also, participants considered 23 propositions of which 10 passed and will be sent for consideration to the state convention. Most of the propositions dealt with topics of protecting human life, limiting the power of the national government, decriminalization of marijuana and gambling in Texas.

Candidate ForumThe Republican Party of Walker County hosted a Candidate Forum at the Katy and E. Don Walker Building on February 4, 2016. In attendance were 125 people to hear candidates and representatives from all local precinct races, the District 8 State Representative race and the Congressional District 18 race. Each of the candidates present were asked 2 questions each and then were given an opportunity for a closing statement. Richard Yawn, RPWC Vice-Chair, hosted the event as party chair Linda McKenzie was one of the candidates in the program. Austin Campbell, SHSU student and political science major, assisted by asking questions of the candidates.

“Join the WCRW and the RPWC”Walker County Republicans can join like-minded voters and help strengthen the GOP by joining the Republican Party of Walker County and the Walker County Republican Women if you are not already a member.

Membership dues are the most important source of income a local party has and you can assist by completing the attached membership forms for the Republican Party of Walker County and /or the Walker County Republican Women. Also, men can join the WCRW as associate members, so if you are not already a member you want to take advantage of that opportunity.

More members provide reliable funding to the local party and with steady and predictable income we can continue to promote Republican ideals and candidates. Of course, we will need volunteers to help staff the Headquarters and, as elections roll around, we will need members to assist with events and getting out the vote. If you are willing to assist, please let us know.

Grassroots volunteers and donors are the lifeblood of the Republican Party of Walker County and we need your support. Please donate today and sign up to volunteer. The Republican Party of Walker County and the Walker County Republican Women thank you for your support.

The 2016 Reagan Dinner was held January 28th at the Lowman Student Center Ballroom with over 200 attending the event sponsored by the Republican Party of Walker County. Prior to the dinner the Walker County Republican Women hosted a social hour and welcomed guests to the dinner. Party Chair Linda McKenzie welcomed the guests. Constable of Precinct #4 Gene Bartee gave the Invocation and County Tax Assessor Collector Diana McRae led the pledges. County Judge Danny Pierce introduced Representative Kevin Brady who talked about his role as Chairman of House Ways and Means Committee and his plans for reforms.

Mike Yawn introduced the keynote speaker, Chase Untermeyer, who served in the administration of three Republican Presidents: Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. His duties included Ambassador to Qatar, Director of the Voice of America, Assistant to the President, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Executive Assistant to the Vice President. He shared with us his experiences while serving in the Reagan Administration. Of particular interest was the way he gave his speech a local flavor by talking about James Baker who served as President Reagan’s chief of Staff. Mr. Baker’s grandfather, Capt. James E. Baker, was born in Huntsville, TX and raised in Dodge.

Events!

The weather cooperated, the donors were generous, and the teams were evenly matched. These ingredients made the LEAP Center’s 7thAnnual “Democrats and Republicans Charity Football Game” a recipe for fun, philanthropy, and fundraising.Although the game ended in a 77-77 draw, the real winners were the local YMCA and the John Holcombe Scholarship, two worthy causes that will split the $6,500 in funds raised by the event. The teams, clad in Bearkat orange and blue, consisted of both Democrats and Republicans, a mix of LEAP Ambassadors, community officials, and SHSU alumni. Several, incidentally, will be delegates to this year’s TX Republican Convention, including: Mike Yawn, Megan Chapa, Kaitlyn Tyra, and Alejandra Galvan.Paul Olle took some terrific photographs, including some exciting halftime action such as a sack race and a YMCA dance. And many donors were on hand, including representatives from Republican Party of Walker County, the Walker County Dem-ocratic Club, the Walker County Republican Women, Terry Stivers, Mac and Leanne Woodward, Dr. Thomas Haase, Ralph and Linda Pease, Sally Kelly, and Dr. Ashley Ross. Additional donors included Dr. Rhonda Callaway; the Political Science faculty; Student Legal & Mediation Services; Gay Nell Hall; Richard and Dorothy Yawn; Dean Abbey Zink; Justice Tom Gray; Bill and Carol Hyman; Stephanie Fors; the Audrey Biggar Law Firm; Smither, Martin, Henderson, & Blazek; Dr. Mitzi Mahoney, Heartfield Florist (Judge Danny Pierce and Cindy Pierce); Dr. John Domino; Gerald Skidmore; Dr. Heather Evans; and Judge Tracy Sorensen.
