,

Brethren,

Here it is June already. Time for me to be jealous of all of you that are fleeing this city

for cooler parts of the country. Maybe, in a few years, it will be my turn to flee. But, in

the meantime, it is my duty to stay here and keep things running as smooth as possi-

ble. Speaking of that, this Trestleboard is a little thin due to everyone deserting our

beautiful 100+ degree weather. This includes our Secretary and Treasurer, while that

may raise some suspicions on your reading it, rest assured everything is fine. Our Sec-

retary is visiting family and our Treasurer has fled the country to visit his grandchildren

in Germany. His son is stationed there.

You will notice that the June birthdays and Masonic Anniversaries page and the Secre-

tary’s report is missing. I forgot to get that information before our Secretary left on his

trip. I assure those of you affected by that, that you will have your dates represented in

the September Issue. There will be four pages of dates. There will be no Trestleboard

for July and August, resuming again in September. Every month will have its own page.

We are going to have a first degree this Thursday, June 7. Dinner at 6 meeting at 7. Our

Senior Deacon will be taking the East, for the first time, for this Degree. June 14 will be

our Stated meeting and I will be giving the report on Grand Lodge. June 21 is our

Awards Banquet and Meet and Greet, please plan on attending. June 28 we are doing

a courtesy 3rd degree for another jurisdiction, our Senior Warden will be taking the

East for this degree. Remember, first section starts at 5, dinner at 6, second section at

7.

Those of you left in town, I hope to see you at Lodge.

Craig, WM

From The East

As of late I’ve been asked about my being a Freemason and its similarities to religion. This is large in part due to the fact that I have a quite large Masonic ring on my finger and for this reason the topic comes up a bit. Many who ask

me wonder if Freemasonry is a religion. I start to explain to them what it is we do and they come away confused. I found some notable similarities and some distinctions between Freemasonry and Religion that might help clear up some questions anyone might have.

First and foremost, Masonry is NOT a religion or a substitute for one. It does demand that members have a belief in a Supreme Being, but that is all. Masonry doesn’t ask for details or require a faith system for its members. Yes, we do have rituals and prayers, but they relate to the matter at hand and not the practice of religion. During these prayers terminology is avoided to allow different faiths to join without causing dissension.

There is no Masonic God. Masons are not require to come to agreement on a defined God and each are allowed to see God how they prefer or profess. Masonry does not attempt to bring religions to-gether to create one composite Masonic God.

The volume of sacred law is essential to Masonry, but there is no required book as each member is allowed to use whichever book deemed holy by them. As Masons we do take specific oaths and ob-ligations. Oaths of a Mason do not pertain to any religion and each member is allowed to use their own sacred volume when doing so. Oaths pertain only to Masonry and will not interfere with any duty a member has outside of Masonry.

Furthermore, Masonry doesn’t allow any dogma or theology, sacraments or claim to lead to salva-tion for it’s members. Masonry is more concerned with modes of recognition and moral symbolism.

However, it is important to note that Freemasonry does support religions and religious practices for it’s members. Masonry expects it’s members to follow their faith and place their duty to God as they see fit.

Lastly the term Worshipful can be confusing to some as it has different meanings for different insti-tutions. Worshipful Master doesn’t mean we worship him as a one would worship a God, but rather, it means highly respected or greatly respected. It is purely a title of respect only. The term worship-ful interestingly comes from the Old English worchyppe, which basically means greatly respected.

I hope this helps anyone now and in the future understand the difference between Freemasonry and Religion and aid in explanation the distinctions between the two. I hope this month of June be a pleasant month for you all. God bless!

Most respectfully,

From The West

Sun City Masonic Investment Trust – Future Investing

When the Sun City Masonic Center was first established, a number of masonic related people con-

tributed their time and resources for the building and property. These people established an invest-

ment trust with the intention of having a place where Masonic related groups and activities could

be conducted. Today, the Sun City Masonic Investment Trust is administered by 5 Trustees elected

for individual rotating 5 year terms of office by members of Sun City Masonic Lodge. The Chair-

man of the Investment Trust Board is Randall Sturdevant. Members of the Investment Trust must

be members of Sun City Masonic Lodge.

The legacy which was established 30-40 years ago has developed into a Masonic Center which is

used by many groups and many of us enjoy today. Due to increasing expenses, the Sun City Ma-

sonic Center is not entirely self-sustaining and depends on donations and the proceeds from the

Trust investments. Unfortunately, the proceeds from the invested principal no longer provide a suf-

ficient amount to cover the ever increasing costs associated with the operation and maintenance of

the building and grounds.

The Investment Trust Board oversees the investments and provides, pursuant to the Trust Agree-

ment, a quarterly amount that is distributed to assist with the operation of the Sun City Masonic

Center. The principal of the Investment Trust was established through donations and contributions

by members of the Masonic groups using the Sun City Masonic Center. The Investment Trust con-

tinues to need donations and contributions to maintain and grow a Trust principal that will provide

for the future operating expenses of the Masonic Center.

If you, or the group you are with, desire to assist in furthering the legacy first established by those

who founded the Sun City Masonic Center, donations and contributions are always welcome. Do-

nations and contributions directed to growing the Investment Trust need to be specifically identi-

fied for the Investment Trust and directed for adding to the invested principal. Please note that the

routine donations and contributions made to Sun City Lodge No 72 assist the Lodge with routine

expenses but are not used to grow the principal of the Investment Trust upon which the quarterly

distributed amount is based. Individuals and groups interested in exploring the opportunity to

make a direct contribution to growing the Investment Trust principal should contact Randall Stur-

devant at 623.217.9426 or [email protected].

Masonic tradition calls on us to aid and assist all distressed brothers, withersoever dispersed. Sun city west High Twelve club

At the Club’s meeting on Friday, 11 May, there was a presentation by the local Salvation Army Officers regarding the

West Valley Corps activity in the Clothe A Child Campaign. This is a campaign that the Sun City West High 12 Club

financially supports as a club and through individual member participation. The Officers also spoke about the West

Valley Corps activity with afterschool programming and the interest in developing local youth programming at the

Salvation Army Corps Center located on the Avenue of the Arts Avenue in Surprise. Below is a picture of the Sun

City West High 12 Club President Jeff Samuelson with the Salvation Army Corps Officers and Club member Glynn

Ley. Glynn is an active member of the West Valley Salvation Army Corps Board of Directors.

At the May meeting, the Club voted to provide the Club’s Proxy to Kevin Hokerk Robinson for voting at the Interna-

tional High 12 Convention in June in Philadelphia. Kevin is the International Association Secretary and the State As-

sociation Secretary. He was present at the meeting to accept the proxy vote material.

The May meeting was the last monthly meeting before the Club begins the Summer Luncheon program. During the months of June, July, August, and September, the Club members meet for lunch on the 2nd Friday of the month. The June luncheon is scheduled for Friday, 08 June, 12 Noon at Lou’s Tivoli Restaurant, 12555 W Bell Road in Surprise. Contact Dave Miller (602.217.6136, [email protected]) to RSVP for the lunch.

Work is underway developing plans for a Club Holiday Party. If you have information that should be included in

planning the event, contact Dave Miller (602.217.6136, [email protected]). Any Master Mason is welcome to join

the Sun City West High 12 Club in breakfast and meeting on the 2nd Friday of the month, October through May.

Spouses are welcome to join in the breakfast meal and attend the meeting.

At the May meeting of the Chapter, the Chapter members successfully balloted on another application for member-ship. They also made plans for a Parent Appreciation Event scheduled for later in May.

Valley of the Sun Chapter had good representation at the Arizona State DeMolay Congress held in April in Phoenix. Below is a picture of a number of the Chapter attendees with several family members who were present.

At the beginning of May, the Chapter members travelled wot Chandler DeMolay Chapter. As a result of the visit, the Chapter members were able to take possession of two Chapter Banners, one of them being their own Chapter Banner which had been taken from the Chapter a week earlier when Chandler DeMolay Chapter visited Valley of the Sun for a Chapter meeting. Below is a picture of the members of Chandler and Valley of the Sun Chapters after the meeting and exchange of Chapter Banners.

In June, the Chapter will celebrate Father’s Day by attending a baseball game at Chase Field.

DeMolay is a Masonic youth organization for young men. To be eligible to join DeMolay, three simple requirements need to be met by the applicant: + You are a young man between the ages of 12 and 21; + You are of good moral character; and, + And you believe in a supreme being (all religions welcome). DeMolay Chapters confer two degrees for membership. The members engage in a variety of service and fun activities. Service events include working with adult Masonic groups and working in local community charity events. DeMolay members enjoy social activities with members of locally Masonic sponsored Rainbow Girl Assemblies and Job’s Daughter Bethels, as well as recreational events involving sports and electronic game challenges. The Chapter events and meetings are planned and run by the youth Chapter officers with guidance from the Dad Advisor.

Valley of the Sun DeMolay Chapter regularly meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at 4:00 PM at the Sun City Masonic Center. Currently, the following local Master Masons serve on the Valley of the Sun Chapter Advisory Council: Jim Almrud; Bryon Howe; Tim Hulstrom; Dave Lowry; Dave Miller; Craig Montgomery; and, Mike Rial. For further information about becoming a member of DeMolay or how to become a member of the Advisory Council, contact Dave Miller at 602.317.6136 or [email protected].

ARIZONA STATE DeMOLAY INSTALLTION OF

MASONIC BROTHER HARRISON CANTRELL

On Saturday, 14 July 2018, Arizona DeMolay will hold the 2018 Annual Banquet. The dinner event includes

recognition of outstanding achievements and the installation of the State DeMolay Officers for the coming year.

Making the event special for Sun City Lodge members is that a Master Mason of Sun City Lodge, Harrison

Cantrell, will be installed as the Arizona DeMolay State Master Councilor. It is not often that a DeMolay State

Master Councilor is a Master Mason at the time of his installation.

The banquet will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, 10220 N Metro Parkway East in Phoenix. Festivities

begin at 6:00 PM. Cost of the chicken dinner event is $35.00 per person. Members of Sun City Lodge are en-

couraged to consider attending the dinner and being present for the installation of Harrison Cantrell as State Mas-

ter Councilor. The dinner is open to non-Masons and non-DeMolay.

Below is a form that can be used to make a dinner reservation. For additional information, contact Dave Miller at 602.17.6136, [email protected].
