The transmission of information was revolutionized in 1832 when Samuel Morse perfected the telegraph. Using a system called Morse Code an operator could send and receive messages over huge distances almost instantaneously. Telegraph lines were strung up alongside railroads so that every major city and town was linked by the 1850s.
