CONCEPTTOWN GARDEN

Bradstone has joined forces with award winning garden designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes, to offer you the tools, inspiration and ideas that you need to create your own dream garden.

This pack contains site plans, planting plans, paving and planting options, hints and tips and much much more to help you create the garden of your dreams.

ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER DESIGN STYLES IS THAT OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD

The Town Gardens we have designed for you within these pages have been inspired by the 18th Century design aesthetic that focused on the creation of elegant classical spaces. These designs have been

specifically crafted to be equally at home within a period setting or a modern home.

The Georgian period was heavily influenced by ideas such as Palladian style and this has inspired Paul’s pared down approach.

Many Georgian buildings ooze charm through the wonderful restrained use of stone, while old Regency paving such as that at Bath exhibits a similar character. Paul has called upon Bradstone Bamburgh Mill and Cloisters paving to recreate this rich feel.

SUMPTUOUS STONE

GEOMETRIC LINES

Paul was inspired by subtle details from the period, such as the ornate bonding on metal work. He has recreated this look and feel with features such as the buttressed hedge.

SUBTLE DETAILS

Draws inspiration from paintings and fabrics of the period and also creates year-round interest.

No matter what the design inspiration, we all need somewhere to sit and escape the day to day of our busy lives.

SECLUDED SEATING

This type of garden relies on a focal point to give balance and order. Here, Paul has used an urn. These were very popular in the Georgian period and linked to classical history, a source for many of the era’s design influences.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A GARDEN DESIGN IS MAKING THE PLAN WORK FOR YOUR SPACE

Not only the layout and size of the garden but how plants and accessories will fit the garden too. In this design for the Town Garden, there are essentially four areas that need meticulous planning before you start. The size of

your garden is crucial. Measure the space you have available.

4

32

The designs that Paul has drawn up here are all based on a 5m x 7m garden, but on the next page you can find tips on how to adapt this to fit your garden. Work out where your paving will go. The paved area is crucial to the function of the garden. In this layout the paving runs against the house and covers ¼ of the length of the garden. For help and advice on different sized gardens see page 08.

In this layout we use edging to create a simple design feature that is infilled with Bamburgh Mill paving. After the paving has been added, divide the space into three equal areas. The centre section will become your lawn with borders on either side. You can work with smaller borders if you want a larger lawn, but always ensure some symmetry by making both borders the same size with lawn centred to the garden. Remember to make sure that borders remain at least 1m wide.

The lawn is bordered on both sides with paving stones. This is achieved using 300mm wide Bamburgh Mill flags to give definition and to add a practical mowing strip. When it comes to planting, you can find a full planting plan and plant list on pages 09 and 10. It’s important to check your soil type before buying plants and to plant in such a way that the garden sweeps up towards its boundaries with larger plants at the back of borders. We’ve suggested two strategically planted trees in this design too to give shade and height to the garden.

At the end of the garden there is an offset hedge. The two outer areas of the hedge give the suggestion that the hedge hides a longer garden behind. And decorative aggregates infill behind to give a suggestion of a continuing pathway. This area can also be used as a utility area.

THE VISUAL SIMPLICITY OF THE TOWN GARDEN BELIES THE CAREFUL SELECTION OF MATERIALS WHICH IS REQUIRED TO BRING THE STYLE TO LIFE

Paul carefully selected paving from the Bradstone range that best reflects the rich patina of Georgian originals. To ensure this style fits your garden harmoniously, whatever its age, select

decorative aggregates which best suit the stone or brick your house is built from.

These include, paving and decorative natural stone which are richly textural and when combined together create a elegant classical feel which creates that classic Georgian experience.

PAVINGTOWN GARDEN

Bamburgh Mill paving

Elegance and simplicity are key to this paving. Bamburgh Mill has been cast from an original 17th Century flagstones, so it effortlessly replicates the character and patina of hundreds of years’ wear. A natural variation in shades that reinforces its timeless character. Use Bamburgh Mill as the main body of the terraced area of the garden with 300mm x 600mm pavers to create the lawn border/mowing strip.

Paul’s plans offer two different laying options

The easy and elegant design features a 5m x 1.5m (approx.) terrace area and uses edging as a border to the terrace.

For the easy and elegant design (see page 08), you will require two 10.9m2 Bamburgh Mill patio packs and one pack of edging stones (cutting will be required).

The lawn/border edges of both designs are created using the 300 x 600mm pavers from the Bamburgh Mill patio packs.

Bamburgh Mill paving used to edge lawn

The paving can be used to edge the lawn or alternatively an edging stone full of character is ideal to complement the traditional feel of the Bamburgh Mill the paving. Visit www.bradstone.com to view Bradstone’s entire range of edging products.

Mellow Cotswold/Golden Gravel decorative aggregates

These two decorative aggregates complement the paving options superbly and create small maintenance free areas in the garden.

PAVING LAYOUTTOWN GARDEN

www.bradstone.com/assuredIf you want this look but don’t want to do it yourself visit:

1 Long garden

Using the principle that no more than ¼ of the garden is for paving, and dividing the remainder into three for lawn and borders, you can simply ‘stretch’ Paul’s design to fit your garden. For a very long garden, you could consider mirroring the designs to create a similar garden ‘behind’ the hedging. Just remember that longer borders will need more plants, so you will need to expand the planting plan.

2 Shaped garden

If you have ‘curvy’ edges to your garden, this shouldn’t cause a problem.

Simply lay the paving in the same way, run the lawn up what visually looks to be the centre of the garden, remembering to ensure that the focal point (the urn) remains central to the design at the end of the garden. This will result in the creation of two borders that help define your garden.

3 Wider garden

The same principles apply. Simply expand your lawned and border areas to fit the space available. Don’t go too wide on your borders or you will have inaccessible planted areas. Remember, just keep the symmetry.

We’ve added a useful grid on page 11 that you can use to sketch the layout of your garden to scale with Paul’s layout underneath as a guide.

HOW DO I ADAPT THIS TO MY GARDEN SHAPE?

Both paving options also feature a lawn border that is created using the 300 x 600mm paving slabs from your patio packs.

BAMBURGH MILL – ALSO USED FOR LAWN BORDERS

THIS LAYOUT USES PAVING IN A VERY SIMPLE YET HIGHLY EFFECTIVE WAY.

It’s an easy pattern to follow and there are no tricky borders or specialist cutting, but by using the suggested paving products you won’t lose that Town Garden feel. We’ve used Bamburgh Mill

paving in a random laying pattern. Simple yet elegant. With edging around the perimeter.

HERE WE HAVE SUGGESTED THE PLANTS WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL TO CREATE THE TOWN LOOK. SEE PAGE 10 FOR MORE PLANTING SUGGESTIONS.

OSTRAYA CARPINIFOLIA

This is a lovely small tree which is ideal for town situations and has all the subtlety of the period. Introduced to the UK in 1724, it is smothered in Catkins in spring. Max. height 15m.

VERBENA BONARIENSIS

A reliable short lived perennial loved by the Georgians and native to South America. Allow to seed freely through the planting scheme. Rich purple flowers summer into Autumn.

AUTUMNALIS ROSEA

Although introduced in the 1860’s, the blossom on this flowering crab could not be a better match for the flowers depicted in Georgian fabrics. Max. height 7m.

LINARIA ‘CANON WENT’

Let this charming Linaria freely seed through the planting scheme each year to create a wonderful natural feel.

INSPIRATION HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM THE RICH FLORAL PAINTING AND FABRICS OF THE PERIOD

A planting scheme has been created that is predominantly hardy herbaceous perennial and filled with fragrant blooms of the 18th century.

At certain times throughout the year, Paul will be online via our Facebook and Twitter pages to answer general questions and offer advice on his garden designs. There will also be seasonal advice on Paul’s blog at www.bradstone.com – so follow and like us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date.

STRUCTURAL PLANTS

These plants will provide the backbone of the garden shape of the garden.

Carpinus betulus, Hornbeam. Grown as a hedge, ideally 1.8m tall and no more than 40cm wide. Ostrya carpinifolia. Plant this nearest the house to provide balance of texture between it and the hedge. Prunus sub. ‘Autumnalis Rosea’. The winter cherry or Malus Floribunda, the crab apple.

BORDER PLANTS

This is a general plan and can be easily adapted. See ‘Paul’s planting tips’ on general tips for ways to create planting groups and plans. This plan arranges planting by height and type.

SHRUBS

All bee and butterfly friendly. Plant tall shrubs at the back of the border whilst low growers such as Lavender and Cistus can be mixed at the front with the herbaceous plants.

• Cotinus cog. ‘Royal Purple’

- smoke bush. Plums of flower during summer.

• Syringa meyeri ‘Palabin’ lilac. A new low growing form, so use near the front.

• Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vanille

Fraise’

• Cistus argenteus ‘Silver Pink’

• Lavandula angustifolia ‘Loddon

Blue’. Remember to prune lavender hard in late summer to keep it looking fresh.

HERBACEOUS PERENNIALS

Herbaceous perennials provide a rich tapestry of colour and come back year after year. At the end of year in October or November simply cut these plants back to the ground and watch them spring back the following season.

Verbascum ‘Jackie in Pink’.

Iris sibirica ‘Sparkling Rose’

Lupinus ‘The Chatelaine’. Lupin

Digitalis ‘Foxtrot’. Foxglove.

Salvia nemorosa ‘Ostfiresland’

Anemone hup. ‘Prinz Heinrich’.

Achillea ‘Moonshine’

Helenium ‘Lemon Queen’

Geranium mac. ‘Spessart’

Not shown on plan, but use the following plants to loosen the borders and scatter them through almost at random.

Verbena bonariensis

Linaria ‘Canon Went’

JUST LIKE THE GARDEN – BALANCE YOUR CHOICE OF ACCESSORIES BETWEEN ELEGANT SIMPLICITY AND INDIVIDUAL FLAMBOYANCE.

Perhaps the biggest and most important item in the design is the Urn. To capture the elegant but excessive feel of the 18th century, go for something really large. Depending on budget and what you fancy, you can find some very exciting cast-iron or original stone urns, or even in a very convincing reproduction resin.

Match to your bench choice or even look at Chinese inspired pieces and baroque inspired metal scrollwork.

Simple and elegant wood furniture would be a great choice but you can go a little opulent. Look at benches created from rustic and twisted wooden branches which was popular in the 18th century.

Ornate lanterns really capture the essence of Georgian style. Simple metal forms that take their inspiration from coaching lanterns will tie in really nicely with the overall feel.
