• Tourism in Spain was developed during the 1960s and 1970s, when the country became a popular place for summer holidays, especially for tourists from the British Isles, France, Central Europe and Scandinavia.

• In 2010, Spain dropped to the fourth most visited country in the world after France, the United States and China with 53 million visitors.

• Spain's tourism direct industry GDP was €62.1 billion ($81.8 billion) in 2010 according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the fifth highest tourism direct industry GDP.

Summer resorts and beaches

• This type of Tourism was the first to be developed in Spain, and today, generates the most income for the Spanish economy. The mild climate during the whole year has been attracting tourists.

• La Tomatina is a festival that is held in the town of Buñol, in which participants throw tomatoes and get involved in this tomato fight purely for fun. It is held on the last Wednesday of August, during the week of festivities of Buñol.
