Since 2006, Lake Trasimeno has been associated with Living Lakes, a network of 64 lakes all over the world which has been recognised by the ONU for its efforts in the field of the sustainable growth of important lakes, wetlands and other sweet-water bodies. As a recognition of the efforts towards adhering to the standards that guarantee quality management and services that respect the environment, a seal of quality has been created called the “Manifesto Ambientale”.www.globalnature.org
An efficient monitoring system to safeguard the quality of the environmentThe Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPA Umbria) collects samples to analyse the quality of the air, water and earth to ensure that they fall within the parameters established by the EU and the Italian government. The resulting data is a fundamental basis for the establishment of local environmental policy. In 2017, ARPA founded the Centre for Climatic Change and Biodiversity in Lake and Wetland Areas at Polvese Island which, together with some of Italy and the world’s most specialized institutes, study the effect of global warming on the flora and fauna of Lake Trasimeno. Furthermore, there has been scientific collaboration to study and identify microplastics in Lake Trasimeno. www.arpa.umbria.it
I Borghi più belli d’ItaliaThis initiative came about to highlight the great historic, cultural and environmental heritage inherent in Italy’s smaller towns and villages. In the Trasimeno area Castiglione del Lago, Paciano, Panicale and Passignano sul Trasimeno have been rewarded with this prestigious recognition. Corciano, not far away, is also a member.
Bandiera Arancione awarded by the Touring Club ItalianoIt’s the Touring Club Italiano’s seal of quality. Of the many charming historical towns around Lake Trasimeno, Città della Pieve and Panicale have been awarded this prestigious recognition.

CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO“On the border between Umbria and Tuscany sits a charming town built by centuries of history. Castiglione protects Lake Trasimeno, its image mirrored in the water.”
The town’s most important landmark is, without a doubt, Palazzo della Corgna (1). Originally a grand villa, it later became the Corgna dynasty’s court palace. Today it is the venue of many important cultural activities and hosts a museum that celebrates the main events of the della Corgna family in frescoes painted by the renowned artist Niccolò Circignani, also known as Il Pomarancio. The Rocca del Leone (2), a military fortress built in the late XII century over the remains of an Etruscan site, is connected to Palazzo della Corgna. The Rocca is a pentagonal building that was modified by Frederick of Svevia to reflect the astronomical sign of Leo. The tower that dominates the entire perimeter of Lake Trasimeno and its enchanting landscape was added in 1310. The remains of a church of probable Byzantine origin devoted to saints Filippo and Giacomo can still be seem inside the Rocca today. The walls of the castle are home to a lovely amphitheatre where, in summer, exhibits and performances of all types can be enjoyed.
Historical landmarksThere are numerous other buildings that well deserve your attention, starting with the church of San Domenico and its Museum of Sacred Art, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie at Casamaggiore, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Carraia and, finally, the church of Santa Maria Maddalena to admire the fine works of art done by Eusebio da San Giorgio. Another especially important and beautiful landmark is what was once the airport of Castiglione del Lago, both for the history it represents and the natural legacy it encompasses. A sweet water aquarium, a planetarium and an airplane museum will also soon be open to the public, a perfect place for everyone to enjoy some leisure time out in the fresh air.

CITTÀ DELLA PIEVECittà della Pieve sits perched on a hilltop at 508m above sea level and looks out over the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno. The landscape is so remarkable here that it inspired native painter Pietro Vannucci (a.k.a. Il Perugino, 1450 ca. 1523), who left behind some of his most memorable works: the Adoration of the Magi at the Santa Maria dei Bianchi (1), the Baptism of Christ and the Madonna in Glory between Sts Gervasio and Protasio in the cathedral, the Deposition from the Cross at the Museo Civico Diocesano di Santa Maria dei Servi and a fresco depicting St. Anthony Abate between Sts Paul the hermit and Marcello at the Church of San Pietro. The historical centre still features the original, Sienese-influenced layout from the early XIII century, including renaissance and neoclassical buildings constructed with a Roman flair. Worth visiting:Cathedral (2) Ancient Longobard parish church.City Tower (2) Roman-style, dating to the XII century.Palazzo della Corgna (3) designed by the architect Galeazzo Alessi, residence of Ascanio della Corgna.Santa Maria dei Servi (4) Church of the Ordine dei Servi di Maria, now the Museo Civico Diocesano.La Rocca (5) Fortress built in 1326.
Museum Route The tour includes stops at the main historic and artistic sites and monuments of the city. At the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi is the celebrated Adoration of the Magi (1504) by Pietro Vannucci. The Museum at Santa Maria dei Servi houses Il Perugino’s last work, the Deposition from the Cross (1517) and an exhibit of Etruscan relics (sarcophagi and funerary urns) discovered in the Tomb of San Donnino (Città della Pieve). The XVI century Palazzo della Corgna was designed by Galeacco Alessi and decorated with grotesques by Niccolò Circignano (a.k.a. Il Pomarancio) and his pupil, Salvio Savini. PACIANOKieran Mulvaney, author and environmentalist, described Paciano to the Washington Post as follows: My first impression, when I got here, is that if Hollywood ever needed to shoot a film in a medieval village, this would be the one. A visit to this lovely town should start in the heart of the historical centre, at Palazzo Baldeschi which houses the information office and TrasiMemo (1), located near the Don Aldo Rossi museum (2). As one walks through the old streets one is enchanted at every corner by the churches, decorations depicting the Madonna, the little balconies and small shops offering local delicacies and crafts, all of which, together with the City Hall on Piazza della Repubblica blend together seamlessly in a unique medieval way. Upon leaving there are several nice walks and cultural stops, like the Madonna della Stella Church (3) which houses a delightful Mannerist fresco cycle which recounts a star that comes to rest on the mantle of the Madonna. Coming to this area also gives the visitor a unique opportunity to discover precious yet often unknown cultural relics, to taste local delicacies and enjoy breathtaking views when walking along the Via Romea Germanica, which was traced in 1200 when it lead from Stade in Germany to Rome, and here connects Castiglione del Lago to Città della Pieve.
“TrasiMemo” and Museo “Don Aldo Rossi” The TrasiMemo-Trasimeno Memory Bank is a truly special sort of bank which preserves ancient and modern local heritage in several halls with exhibits and workshops. Nearby is the Don Aldo Rossi Museum, which is home to the ancient city gonfalon, made by the Bonfigli bottega in 1450. In the museum itself are XVIII century paintings that look like magnificent arras featuring gracious depictions of the Ladies.

Museum RouteThe route includes:- the church of San Sebastiano (4) With frescoes painted by Il Perugino (The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian, 1505) and Raphael (Madonna in throne with musical angels)- the Teatro Caporali (5) With its historical work by Piervittori;- the church of San Michele;- the Anita Belleschi Grifoni church at the Church of Sant’Agostino (6); - The museum of sacred vestments and objects at the Church of the Madonna della Sbarra (7);- the Mariottini collection at the Pinacoteca Comunale (8)
A natural terrace overlooking Lake Trasimeno, Panicale is the birthplace of artists and leaders and retains all the characteristics of a medieval castle, the structure perched on Mount Petrarvella. The three ancient squares on three different levels characterizes its layout like so many concentric ellipses. The main square hosts a XV century well (turned into a fountain in the 1900s ) and the impressive Collegiate Church of San Michele (1), while the XIV century Palazzo del Podestà (2) (home of the Historical Archives) was built on the city’s most panoramic spot on Piazza Masolino, and obviously boasts a breathtaking view. In addition to being one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Panicale has, since 2007, also earned the prestigious Orange Flag from the Italian Touring Club for its important cultural and landscape heritage, and for the many events it hosts: the theatre season, music festivals, food festivals, embroidery courses. The Renaissance left a significant artistic imprint here through such men as Il Perugino, Raphael and G. Battista Caporali, just to mention some the great masters of that era. The nearby Mongiovino Sanctuary (3) is considered one of the most important examples of Italian Mannerist art. Designed by Rocco da Vicenza, it houses works by Il Pomarancio, Lombardelli, Alfani and many more...

PASSIGNANO sul TrasimenoThis ancient fishing village, a real gem, is set on the shore between the blue waters of the lake and the green of the surrounding hills. Its location makes it a must for anyone travelling between Umbria and Tuscany going over the pass which gave Passignano its name: Passus Jani, or Passo di Giano, the mythical god of ports. Just outside of town visitors can go hiking, cycling, mountain biking or horseback riding. Pieve di San Cristoforo (1), adjacent to the cemetery on the outskirts of town, is the old parish church of Passignano and dates to the X century. The monumental church of the Madonna dell’Oliveto (2) is in the west of town and was built in the XVI century. The Rocca (3), or fortress, probably dates to when the Longobards were here in the V-VI centuries. It has a stunning view and is opened to the public for exhibitions, concerts and plays. The Rocca also hosts the Boat Museum. Perched on a hilltop just north of town is the hamlet of Castel Rigone, a charming blend of nature and culture ideal for visitors seeking an even more tranquil stay. It also boasts the Santuario of Maria SS. dei Miracoli, a masterpiece of Umbrian Renaissance architecture.
The Fortress and the Churches Museum RouteWithin the ancient medieval walls you can enjoy the very best views over the Lake from the top of the medieval fortress. Aside from lovely landscapes and a relaxing environment in the new panoramic coffee shop, there are also a variety of exhibition halls, including the River Boat Museum, which is part of the Atlante Linguistico dei Laghi Italiani. The route then leads to the Church of San Cristoforo, an old Parish church dating to the VIII - IX century embellished with precious frescoes, and to the Church of the Madonna dell’Oliveto.

PIEGARO
www.comune.piegaro.pg.it
The area of Piegaro encompasses various towns, each one steeped in history and blessed by nature: the castle of Cibottola, which still boasts much of its ancient walls and a seven-sided, 20 metre high tower, the beautifully restored Gaiche and Greppolischieto castles, the lovely town of Castiglion Fosco with its round XVI century tower, the XI century Abbazia dei Sette Frati (privately owned) complete with a Romanesque church, monastery and courtyard. Then there is Pietrafitta and its lignite mines where, 60 years ago, paleontological fossils of European importance were uncovered, now preserved in the Luigi Boldrini Museum of Paleontology Lake of Pietrafitta, a fisherman’s paradise (carp) and a haven for the fitness-minded (1). Monte Arale is 853 metres above sea level and the highest peak of the area. As you go up towards the old town of Piegaro, you will first come across an old church of the Madonna della Crocetta (XVI century) and then the ancient town walls and medieval towers. Of interest inside the town are the church of San Silvestro Papa and the lovely XVIII century palazzo Misciattelli - Pallavicini, home to an historic residence. Piegaro’s most interesting landmark, however, is the remains of the old glass factory, now the home of the Glass Museum (2).
The Glass Museum (2) In the heart of the historical centre of town, at the feet of an imposing brick chimney, is an ancient glass factory which today houses the Museo del Vetro, or Glass Museum. The building is a fine example of industrial archaeology and tells of the centuries-old history of glassmaking in Piegaro, an industry that flourished from the Middle Ages to the XX century. The museum lets visitors explore the production phases involved in glassmaking and the buildings connected to it, a look into the evolution of the craft over centuries of local history. It also displays some of the pieces resulting from the effort and tells stories about the owners and their workers. It’s a journey back in time in an industry that has a thousand facets, a trip to explore the technology, learn about the history and share the memories of daily life.1

TUORO sul TrasimenoTuoro is at the northern end of Lake Trasimeno, right on the Umbrian border with Tuscany. The district has created four routes to celebrate the fascinating history and art of the area. The Historic-Archaeological Battle Route over the open countryside encompasses the theatre of the fierce battle between the Carthaginians and the Romans. It comprises 12 rest areas equipped with illustrated panels and accompanying text in four languages that recount the famous battle in minute detail. The Hannibal at Trasimeno Museum (1) has also recently been opened, a fine example of applied multi-media technology. Then there is the nature trail that passes through lovely woods and leads to the Torre di Vernazzano (2), a tower that leans with a mind-boggling incline of 14°! The Campo del Sole (3) is an open air exhibit of 27 columns of sculpted pietra serena set in a monumental park on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. Last, but not least, is the Isola Maggiore route, a journey back in time to the days of St. Francis and the Renaissance on this tiny island, and the island’s fine tradition of lace-making the local ladies have passed down over generations. The route includes such lovely landmarks as the frescoed church of S. Michele Arcangelo, the island’s historical documentation centre and the Lace Making Museum (4), which houses very real works of art, masterpieces made with what is known as the Irish Point technique, patiently crafted, refined lace used to adorn everything from wedding dresses to baptism gowns.
Museo Annibale al TrasimenoThis museum offers the most interesting novelties related to the history, archaeology, geology and geography of the famous Battle of Trasimene, an exhibition that has adopted the latest methodologies and technology, as well as applied multi-media systems. More specifically, here you will find the latest studies on the archaeological map of the north-eastern area of Lake Trasimeno, along with the most popular theories about this battle and the other battles of the Second Punic War.

Since the dawn of man, Trasimeno has been at the centre of Italy’s historical events because of its strategic location between Florence and Rome. Gorgeous scenery created by the poetry of the green hills and the buildings of Etruscan and Roman origin can still be admired to this day. The former, for example, considered this lake as a crossroads that united the main cities of Cortona, Perugia and Chiusi, and relics such as funerary urns, the foundations of country homes, gravesites and churches built on the remains of ancient temples have been discovered here over time. The latest discovery was revealed in October 2015, an important Etruscan tomb found in San Donnino, just outside of Città della Pieve. Three urns and two sarcophagi containing intact skeletons were found inside and tests reve-al that they date from the middle of the IV century BCE to the early III century BCE. The relics can be seen at the Museo Civico Diocesano di Santa Maria dei Servi.

SANTA MARGHERITA
Born in 1247 at Laviano (Castiglione del Lago), Saint Margaret was a woman of incomparable inner strength and considered the “third light” of the Franciscan tradition. After various trying episodes, she moved to Cortona and became a Franciscan Tertiary. Her conversion, like a Novella Maddalena (Pope Benedict XVI), took place near an oak tree known as del Pentimento just outside of I Giorgi (Castiglione del Lago). She was a maker of peace between the warring local Guelphs and the Ghibellines and founded the congregation of the Poverelle and a hospital for the poor.
Fra’ GIOVANNI da PIAN del CARPINE
Born in Magione, Friar Giovanni was one of St Francis’ first followers. An explorer and missionary, he was sent out to travel throughout Europe to spread the Franciscan Order. He became famous for the long and perilous journey he undertook all the way to Mongolia to deliver a message of peace from the Pope to the Great Khan in 1245, several years before the more celebrated Marco Polo embarked on his journey. He wrote about his fascinating travels in his Historia Mongalorum upon his return. This painting is in the City Hall of the Consiglio Comunale and can be seen when City Hall is open.
SAN FRANCESCO
The founder of the religious order that
still bears his name, the Trasimeno area can be considered at the centre of an itinerary which links the places of the great saint. Starting in Assisi - Santa Maria degli Angeli all the way to the Verna Sanctuary outside of Arezzo and the Convent of the Cells in Cortona in Tuscany.During his wanderings, Saint Francis came to Isola Maggiore for a period of meditation in 1211. In memory of this visit a church and a convent were built, and there is a boulder, which can still today be seen, which they say bears his footstep. Not far from Castel Rigone is a pilgrimage site, a large flat stone that legend tells us is where the saint slept.
ANNIBALE (247 B.C. - 183 B.C.)
Some consider this Carthaginian general as the greatest general of all of antiquity. As you approach Tuoro sul Trasimeno, you can immediately get a sense of how ideal this place must have been for the ambush Hannibal lead which annihilated the battalions of the Roman consul Caio Flaminio Nepote. Known as the Battle of Trasemene, it was one of the bloodiest encounters of the Second Punic War. At dawn on 24 June, 217 BC, some fifteen thousand Roman soldiers lost their lives in just three hours of fierce fighting. The memory of this battle is kept alive in the Tuoro area with a fascinating archaeological route dotted with plaques.

PIETRO VANNUCCI “IL PERUGINO”
The best-known artist of his time, Pietro Vannucci, also known as “Il Perugino”, was, among others, also the teacher of Raphael. Born in Città della Pieve, his work can be found in the most important museums the world over. In Città della Pieve one can still admire his Adoration of the Magi featuring a procession of knights that disappears into the vast landscapes he loved to paint, in which the Trasimeno area is easily recognised. In Panicale there is the Martyrdom of St Sebastian depicting the saint in ecstasy as he is pierced by arrows, his face looking upwards to God in the heavens. Sought after by kings and noblemen, Il Perugino was the founder of a new way of painting, a style featuring clear-cut forms and colours rich with light.

ASCANIO della CORGNA
A great adventurer, Ascanio della Corgna’s name is tied to Città della Pieve and Castiglione del Lago, both of which are graced with grand palazzi belonging to his family, where many rooms are decorated with frescoes that depict episodes from his life. Ascanio della Corgna is a prime example of a strong and vehement adventurer with, nonetheless, a broad and gentle humanist streak. He fought in all of his era’s wars, even as far away as Lepanto, and was such an able swordsman that thousands would come watch him duel, as evidenced by a fresco in the family’s Castiglione del Lago palace.
GERARDO DOTTORI
Born in Perugia in 1884, Gerardo Dottori is a central figure of Futurism in art, the most significant Italian art trend of the XX century. He was one of the most important exponents of aeropainting, a special way of portraying mystical landscapes, mostly based on Lake Trasimeno and Umbria, and, as Marinetti himself wrote, “renewing the original intensity of Sacred Art.” Among the works still in Umbria is the frescoed assembly hall in the Municipal Building of Magione (in particular the one in which Father Giovanni da Pian del Carpine delivers a letter of peace from the Pope to the Great Khan during a long journey that took him all the way to Mongolia years before Marco Polo) and those with a religious theme in several churches of Magione, San Giovanni Battista, San Cristoforo (Monte Sperello), Santa Maria Annunziata (Montecolognola) and in Tuoro, Santa Maria Maddalena.
VITTORIA AGANOOR and Guido Pompilj
Vittoria Aganoor and Guido Pompilj are the stars of a romantic yet tragic love story that took place here at the turn of the XX century. She was an Armenian poet, he a local politician who saved Lake Trasimeno from drying up. When Vittoria arrived in Monte del Lago she wrote about the beauty of the lake in her poems. Considered the best known poet of the 1800s in Italy, her style recalls D’Annunzio and Leopardi. She married Guido but then fell gravely ill and died. He organised her funeral and then committed suicide, and in the note he left behind, asked to be buried next to her.
CESARE BORGIA
The Italian Renaissance left many impor-tant traces in Magione in, for example, the treatise of Niccolò Machiavelli in his The Prince. Here he cites the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione as the theatre of one of one of the best-known military conspiracies against Cesare Borgia, known as il Valentino. In 1502, he narrowly avoided a plot that had been organised against him by the lords of various cities in Central Italy intent on putting an end to his expansionary aims. When Borgia heard of the plot, he very handily befriended the very men that were against him and then, having gathered them together in a room at the Castle, killed most of them and exiled the rest.

FRANCO RASETTI
When it comes to peace, one of the most memorable figures of this region was Franco Rasetti, a physicist and botanist born in Pozzuolo Umbro (Castiglione del Lago), where an association dedicated to him has been set up with a permanent exhibition and a bronze bust. He frequented several universities, including one in Berlin where he befriended Albert Einstein and was one of the so-called Via Panisperna Boys, young physicists under the guidance of Enrico Fermi. However, when he saw that much of his studies were oriented towards weapons research he abandoned physics and turned to botany. “No good could ever come from the monstrous weapons of destruction being created,” is how Rasetti explained his decision, one that isolated him from the rest of the scientific community.
The Trasimeno region is rich with traces left by emblematic historical personages

The Park and its Islands
Parco del lago TrasimenoThe largest of the six Regional Parks of Umbria, is one of the most important wetlands areas in Europe for the presence of plant species, fauna and fish of great importance. The total silence and the nature that it encompasses allows life to go on here without having to turn to artificial methods of preservation. It is truly unique.
Aeroporto Eleuteri - Castiglione del LagoThis airport on the shores of Lake Trasimeno was named after the famous Umbrian aviator Leopoldo Eleuteri and is no longer in use (with the exception of small leisure craft during shows), repurposed during the last century as a pristine green area encompassing some 100 hectares. It is the starting point of a variety of walking and cycle routes. ENAC certified area.
Oasi Naturalistica La Valle - San Savino - MagioneThe naturalist heart of the Trasimeno area, shallow water and cane thickets make it an impor-tant resting and nesting place for thousands of migrating birds. Open all year round (9am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm from October to May, and from 4pm to 8pm from June to September). Visitors can enjoy guided tours, audio-guides tours (English and Italian), and nature walks on Thursday and Saturday mornings from 15 June through 15 September. The Oasis boasts two main trails with 3 observatories, an ancient distributary that is partially accessible, 30 binoculars, a bird ringing station that is open Saturday mornings and a refuge equipped with a kitchen and twelve beds.
Isola Maggiore Isola Maggiore is under the jurisdiction of Tuoro sul Trasimeno and is the only one of the three islands that has a stable population. It still preserves the unique atmosphere of a 15th century fishing village. In 1211 Saint Francis of Assisi came here at Lent to pray and fast in peace and quiet, and there is now a lovely chapel dedicated to his arrival on the island during a violent storm, marking the place where he landed and knelt down in prayer. One of the feathers in the cap of the island is the Irish-point lace made by the local women. The Isola Maggiore Museum Circuit indicates the most important places to see on the island: Museo del Merletto, Chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo, Casa del Capitano, Chiesa di S. Salvatore.

Isola PolveseThe largest of the three islands of the Lake, this one falls under the jurisdiction of Castiglione del Lago. It actually belongs to the Province of Perugia and is used all year round for tourism and environmental purposes. It is home to various historical buildings such as the Church of San Secondo, the Olivetano Monastery, the Church of San Giuliano and a Castle dating to the XIV century. The island also boasts the Porcinai Pond, an aquatic garden constructed there by Pietro Porcinai in the late 1950s. The island is a fine example of sustainable environmental management and many educational activities and research activities are organised there. It has a Hostel and centre with a meeting hall and classrooms. The island has a hostel, a restaurant - coffee bar and a bathing establishment.

Walking and Cycling Trails
Via Romea GermanicaThe Via Romea from Stade to Rome was first described in the early XIII century by the Abbot Alberto and is, practically speaking, a succession of itineraries, with precise data on the places and distances, as well as road conditions, of a round trip journey he made from Rome to Stade, in Germany, and back. In the Trasimeno region it covers an area that includes Castiglione del Lago, Paciano and Città della Pieve. www.viaromeagermanica.com
Sports and LeisureNot only can you relax walking, cycling and horseback riding (there are various horseback riding centres and stables), but the sports you can enjoy here are many and include golf, archery, tennis on land, or, on the water, kite-surfing, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing and SUP. Lovers of two and four-wheeled racing can go to the nearby autodromo and the crossdromo. The Trasimeno area is also ideal for fishing – both amateur and professional. There are many well-equipped bathing establishments along the shoreline.

The Fagiolina of TrasimenoCultivated here since the times of the Etruscans and the Greeks, this tiny bean thrives in the ideal climate and terrain of Lake Trasimeno. It can be easily recognized by its small size and various colours. The fagiolina is used by gourmets and great chefs in both traditional dishes and brand new modern recipes. The Trasimeno Fagiolina Consortium was founded in 2002 to safeguard its production and guarantee its quality, and since 2002 it has been part of the Slow Food.

Wine grapes have been cultivated here on the hills of Trasimeno since the days of the Etruscans. The mild climate of Lake Trasimeno and the slopes of the hills that surround it offer the vines perfect exposure to the sun. The district is known for such autochthonous varieties as Grechetto – a ‘white’ grape that makes straw-yellow wine with flashes of light green – and Gamay del Trasimeno – of the Grenache family, a ‘black’ grape that makes a garnet coloured wine of varying intensity.
Oil
Olive oil is one of the Trasimeno region’s oldest and most typical products. Vast expanses of groves cloak the hillsides and characterise the landscape, offering a fine quality extra virgin olive oil that has been certified and guaranteed by the DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin) Umbria seal and with the geographic Colli del Trasimeno denomination. The quality olive oils are made using mostly the Dolce Agogia, Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo varietals.
Trasimeno Fish
Fish has been a vital source of nutrition for the local people since time immemorial. Today’s professional fishermen work together united by a cooperative. The fish they catch are regina carp, eel, tench, royal bass, pike and silversides. The regina carp is best cooked in porchetta and is Trasimeno’s best known fish. It roe is used to make soups and as dressing for pasta dishes. The area’s famous “tegamaccio”, which gets its name from the crock pot in which it is prepared, is a delicious fish soup.

SaporiThis initiative was conceived as a method to qualify and raise awareness of local produce and products made in the Trasimeno area. Restaurants that take part in the initiative guarantee the quality and processing techniques which give the area cuisine it’s special identity and offer a menu that includes many seasonal traditional dishes. Most of the main ingredients are locally bred or grown and the aim is to create a collaboration between the various operators to offer quality food and services to locals and visitors alike.

Fattoria Palombaro farm is located at the entrance of the lovely Monte del Lago promontory. Set within the town’s walls perched on a sheer cliff over the lake and ringed by olive trees, the farm has been making the fine olive oil for which it is famous with serious passion and commitment for almost a century. The farm welcomes interested visitors with a guided tour of the traditional stone olive press, the ancient oil storeroom, perhaps the only one of its kind, and demonstrates the traditional methods used to make olive oil. A tasting of the two types of oil made on the farm, amabile and fruttato, drizzled on toast and accompanied by a glass of local wine is offered on a terrace overlooking the lake. The Fattoria also offers walks on the farm’s land for nature enthusiasts to discover the truly special magical environment of the olive groves.

The Trasimeno area is blessed with a favourable climate and gently rolling hills, an area that has a very long tradition of wine making and has now seen these wines rewarded with a DOC (Controlled Destination of Origin) called Colli del Trasimeno. The production area is extensive and includes the areas all around the lake where such prized white wine grapes like Grechetto, Trebbiano and Chardonnay are grown, but also some fine Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo and Merlot, not to mention the an autochthonous grape called Gamay del Trasimeno, which belongs to the Grenache family and has been grown here since the 1600s. There are also some fine rosé wines made within the district.
