Financial Report: January 1 - August 31, 2016

Financial update:

By the end of the coming month, we will have paid for the major sanctuary organ repair and maintenance, repairs to the restrooms (new flooring following water leak), and a major plumbing bill for repairing a faulty backflow valve. We are so thankful that our giving this summer enables us to cover these expenses.

Thank you so much for your faithful giving. If you have any questions regarding the budget or expenses, please contact Don Watson, treasurer.

The September 11th Potluck, with food samples from 1880’s and 1950’s and special quilt display, was a glorious begin-ning to our 150th Anniversary Year. It is an exciting time to be part of FBC, especially with Erika’s leadership and commit-ment to telling stories of the past and weaving them into the present. The year ahead promises to be exceptional with workshops, concerts and lots of stories.

The Church Board meeting on September 14th was an important one. It was agreed that four of the topics discussed warrant a Congregational Meeting sooner than the regular sched-uled Semi-Annual Meeting in January.

The topics that need congre-gational consideration and action are:

Change wording on Member-ship section of Constitution

Church Board Notes Next Meeting: Wed., Oct. 12

(first presented at the June congregational meeting),

Act on Stewardship Com-mittee and Church Board recommendation that we mount a Capitol Campaign to fund major deferred maintenance of the church home,

Affirm continuation of the covenant with AMOS minis-tries in Nicaragua for another four year period,

Approve the recommenda-tion of Church Board that FBC become a member of AWAB (Association of Wel-coming and Affirming Bap-tists),

The special Congregational Meeting on these four topics is scheduled for —

Sunday, October 30th after the 11:00 AM

Combined Worship Service

A light lunch will be provided.

Written materials are being prepared and you will receive them soon. Also, prior to the October 30th meeting there will be scheduled discussion sessions on the proposed deferred maintenance project and you will be encouraged to attend one of them.

The archives, I may have told you, are gorgeous. Church records were for many years hand-written in perfect calligraphy into a

book with a marbled brown cover. The long, narrow book holds meeting minutes, attendance lists, expense records, and community covenants. But there’s more: Old bulletins tell of a sermon series “introducing His Royal Majesty, the Devil” and warning listeners of his traps. There’s a menu from a 1930s Friendship Class banquet, handwritten on a tiny program and decorated with even tinier stickers; a slick, black program from the Requiem the FBC choir sang with friends from the First Presbyterian Church choir; a picture of the days when men all wore suits to church, and women all wore hats.

Thoughts from Erika

And these snippets and records – these are also stories.

We’ll spend the year reading them, hearing them, telling them. In some ways, it’s easy for us to think of the history of our church as a story God’s been telling in McMinnville for almost 150 years. So the stretch this year will be to think of our present as story also. Our own lives, our own faith journeys, our own week-in-and-week-out worship experience and committee work and volunteer service and dinner group conver-sation – those are all, also, the story of this church, right now. They are stories of formation and growth, forgiveness and reconcili-ation, intimacy and community, challenge and call. They are stories of good news, and we are going to learn to tell them.

I invite you to dive in to our anniversary year – the Storytelling Starter Workshops, the Book Groups, the Concert Series, the remembering and the imagining – and to listen to the lives all around you, and, above all, to your own life. It is the all story of God, here and now, and yearning to be told.

Sunday Berean Class — The Isaiah Seminar

Our 150th Anniversary offers us, as a church, the opportunity to study one of the Great Books within western cultural tradition. Many of the issues we are facing as a nation and world today surfaced in the social and political world Isaiah lived. A number of things are coming together this fall and year that underline the urgency for such a conversation: We are in the midst of an election cycle that is raising issues that matter. We are faced with questions like: How does one deal with the military power of the “big guy” in one’s geographical space? What is the role of religion in political discourse? Where does one set the bar for social justice issues? How does one identify leadership qualities that enable enduring value?

Join Us! each Sunday at 10 am, as we seek to clarify some of these complex issues by bringing together the wisdom of an ancient Prophet, the contemporary theologizing of

John Dominic Crossan, and the communal experience of FBC, particularly over the past 25 years.

6 week Brian Doyle Book Groups — begin the week of October 23rd

To be completed just before the author visits FBC on December 3 & 4.

Sunday Chapel Class — The First Paul, Reclaiming the Radical

Visionary Behind the Church’s Conservative Icon by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan

Ruminate Magazine says of Brian Doyle: “His lyrical prose, even when working with weighty, difficult topics, carries a timbre of grace that leaves you full-hearted and stunned.” You’re invited to join a book group to explore Doyle’s work with friends in October and November, and then to listen to him and lunch with him the first weekend of December.

A Shimmer of Something— Meets 10 a.m. Sundays at FBC (begins Oct. 23) No RSVP necessary. “Doyle surprises us, steering us away from the predictable and routine, saying all of those things that are un-sayable, and capturing our attention so that we can see what we were just about to miss.” —from the introduction by Jill Pelaez Baumgaertner

Grace Notes— Meets 12:15 p.m. Sundays at FBC (begins Oct. 23), No RSVP necessary

Mink River— Meets 12 p.m. Tuesdays at Pura Vida (begins Oct. 25) RSVP to [email protected]. “I’ve read no Northwest novel like it and enjoyed few novels more. Of this Oregon I am nothing but glad to have wandered. Mink River sings and sings.”

—David James Duncan The Grail— Meets 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at R. Stuart & Co. (begins 10/25), RSVP to [email protected]. “Like the wine Doyle writes of, these recollections are lay-ered with subtlety and depth… Perfect for wine aficionados and word lovers, this is a full-bodied, ebullient account.” —Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Children & Other Wild Animals— Meeting time & place TBD. RSVP to [email protected]. “In Doyle’s universe, language is too wild to be confined to a single genre, just as living things (human and otherwise) are too wild to be confined to separate niches. He makes us feel the aliveness of words, newts, hummingbiirds, infants, teenagers, in essays as fervent as prayers.”

—Anne Faidman

Paul is second only to Jesus as the most important person in the birth of Christianity, and yet he continues to

be controversial, even among Christians. How could the letters of Paul be used both to inspire radical grace and to endorse systems of oppression, condoning slavery, subordinating women, condemning homosexual behavior? Borg and Crossan use the best of Biblical and historical scholarship to explain the reasons for Paul's mixed reputation and reveal to us what scholars have known for decades: that the later letters of Paul were created by the early

church to dilute Paul's egalitarian message and transform him into something more "acceptable." They argue there are actually "Three Pauls" in the New Testament: "The Radical Paul" (of the seven genuine letters), "The Conservative Paul" (of the three disputed epistles), and "The Reactionary Paul" (of the three inauthentic letters). By closely examining this progression of Paul's letters - from the authentic to the inauthentic - the authors show how the apostle was slowly but steadily "de-radicalized" to fit Roman social norms in regards to slavery, patriarchy, and patronage.

Page 5 Mission Moments

This month, we are featuring Unidos Bridging Community, one of the organizations FBC donations support.

UNIDOS’ mission is to build bridges of understanding and support between Latinos and non-Latino

communities in Yamhill County.

Here are some of the programs we are highlighting this month:

Voter Registration and Education regarding the mechanics of voting.

"Latinas: Together in the Community," is a 8 session workshop for Latina women of Yamhill County to feel comfortable here in Yamhill County and have a stronger voice in their communities.

Some topics include: How to advocate for your kids in the school system. How to go to go back to school and get your GED. Accessing Healthcare. Latinx Young Professionals - the group's purpose is to build support, friendships, opportunity, and leadership to enhance their professional development and personal growth in the workplace. This network has the potential to empower them and their communities as they connect with each other.

Thanks for your support! Stay tuned for more developments from this dynamic organization!

The logo for this year’s campaign is similar to our own logo celebrating First Baptist Church McMinnville’s 150 year Anniversary. A coincidence? Both display a pinwheel design that symbolizes movement and the “Winds of God.”

We are missionaries in our world and our community.

The World Mission Offering, through International Ministries ABC/USA, provides

1) Opportunities for people of the world to learn about the Christian faith,

2) Work throughout the world for justice, peace, and an abundant life, and

3) Training for our missionaries and young people around the world.

World Mission Offering happens in October at FBC. Your Mission Education Team encourages you to give generously.

What’s Your Story? Come and tell it to the Story Project!

The Story Project helps to remind us of our shared journey and to strengthen and build the connections between people. By telling our stories, we create an invaluable archive for future generations at FBC. Each month, a new question will be posted. Come and answer that question, or tell us your own story

or recollection. Individual stories and one-on-one interviews are welcome. Selected recordings will be featured in a compilation for the 150th anniversary.

The Story Project is made possible, in part, though the Vital Worship Grants Program of Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, generously supported by the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc.

Youth Group Sunday Night DINNER

Hey FBC church family! We are meeting every Sunday night with our YOUTH and rotate our programs between worship & discussion, service projects and fun/game nights each week. We also share a meal every time we’re together because:

a) teenagers are always hungry and b) we think it’s important to sit together, look one another in the eye and have conversations and just enjoy being together, all of which

happens when we “break bread.”

So if you would be willing to provide dinner for us, or team up with another individual or family to prepare something, we would love that! You can help feed our youth AND get to know them better, a win-win. If you’re interested, contact Sean P. Williams, Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator — [email protected]. Thanks!
