the less than total formal atmosphere coupled with the formal swearing in ceremonies, and the very good entertainment and dancing. All in all, the night seemed to be a big success. It needs to be mentioned that most of the Bridge Officers have again stayed with the positions they held, and responsibilities they had, for another year. Thank you to them for being there for all of us. Some changes that not all may be aware occurred. Charlie Richardson moved to the position “Executive Officer”, Ron Terciak moved to the position “Immediate Past Commander”, Al Ponzio joined in the position of “Assistant Education Officer”, Larry Tobias joined in the position of “Assistant Administrative Officer”, Steve Mortonson joined in the position of “Assistant Treasurer”, Judy Berger joined in the position of “Assistant Secretary” and Jeanne Shaw joined in the position of member of the “Auditing Committee”. When all are combined, they represent a very, very good group of leaders for our squadron! It was promised to mention the donation that occurred for Ron Terciak. When it was explained to Ron what had transpired and that folks anonymously contributed, he was presented a bank check (which was approximately $3,400.00). He was, to say the least, totally taken aback, emotionally broke down and was truly immensely thankful and grateful. He wrote a letter to the members of the squadron (which is published in this issue of The Tidings) and, because the donors were and are confidential, he wrote a separate letter to those that contributed (the letter starts with “Dear My Anonymous Angel Donors”) and the letter will be copied and sent, by the banker via US Mail, to those that made a donation to this fund. Thank you to all for this. Continued in next column →

Just a reminder – our Membership Meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of the month (except not in January, June, July, August or December), with dinner for those that choose to dine before the meeting. The meetings are at Shell Point, with dinner in the Crystal Restaurant starting at 5:30 p.m., and the meeting starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Center (adjacent to the Crystal Restaurant). The Vessel Safety Check Inspectors are ready and willing to perform VSC’s on your boats, or those of your neighbors, friends, etc. The VSC’s are painless, take about 30-45 minutes, and, as we have mentioned, they are not punitive if some safety item is found to not pass inspection, as it can be corrected and then your boat passes and you receive the annual VSC sticker. No law enforcement agencies are contacted or involved. Please give this serious consideration and schedule your boat for an inspection of safety items. As a result of the January ABC class two couples have joined our squadron: Larry Flair and Sharon C. Curtis-Flair, and Randall Manning and Colleen Manning have successfully completed the ABC course and signed up. I am hoping they come to the Membership Meetings and the upcoming C&R’s and, if they do, let’s all give them a warm welcome and make them feel comfortable and a part of our squadron. The Bonita Springs Boat Show is fast approaching. We will have a booth at the show and will staff it, along with one or two other squadrons, for the four days February 28-March 3, 2019. Please keep the dates open, if possible, and more information will be forthcoming as to which day(s) our squadron shall have responsibility and a schedule will be prepared. From the Administrative Officer

Lt/C Nancy Chambers, S.

Updates 1-The squadron's new assistant administrative officer is Larry Tobias. He is a member of the fishing group we formed last year and among other helpful things will be working to keep that going this year. His enthusiasm will inspire many of you! 2-This month's C&R will be on Tuesday, February 12 at Three Fishermen in North Fort Myers. I won't change the date! - next General membership meeting and dinner will be on Tuesday, February 26 in the Crystal Room at Shell Point starting at 6. 4-March will be our yard sale so start collecting your fine quality used items now! I'll have a couple of collection days at the office soon.

www.scbps.com We've had our Change of Watch and are

now ready to keep the squadron's activities in full swing for another season. One tool that we can all use is our squadron website, www.scbps.com. Charlie Richardson, the squadron executive officer, is the webmaster. He keeps everything current with useful and fun information. Go to the site and check out the nice pictures from the COW taken by Bob Shaw or see other events from the past.

From the home page you can easily go to "squadron events" and the "calendar" to find out what's going on and when. You can also click on "tide and weather " to get the information you need to plan a safe day of boating and "links" will lead you to many useful and informative sites - check out "animated knots" to have some fun!

Continued in next column →

If you are interested in furthering your boating knowledge use "education" to find a list of classes currently being offered by the squadron. You can register online to take the class. Also, remind your non-member friends they can sign up for ABC or look at "membership" for more info on joining USPS.

I encourage each and every one of you to go to www.scbps.com and begin to use the site on a regular basis. Charlie works hard to maintain a great tool for us so we should all get in the habit of using it. You'll be happy you did.

On the water In December a 71-year-old Frenchman

named Jean-Jacques Savin set off to float cross the Atlantic by ocean current only in a barrel made of resin coated plywood that he designed himself. It's just under10 feet long by less than 7 feet across and is actually quite technical, for a barrel. He left El Hierro in the Canary Islands and thinks the trip will be about 3 months. Just look his name up on the internet for more information or check out his Facebook page. He is really quite an interesting character! ■

Thank you, in advance, for helping out with this annual event. The squadron Directories will soon be available. They are going to press within the next few days. A HUGE thank you to Wayne and Judy Berger for all the efforts put forth in keeping the information current and accurate and putting it all together for us. At $2.00 each they are a good reference for the email and telephone numbers (and other information) of fellow squadron members including all the Bridge officers and Assistant Bridge Officers. There is a meeting currently being scheduled amongst the Commanders, Past Commanders and some Bridge Officers of the four Quad Squads to discuss whether or not it would be possible to help the local members of the US Coast Guard who are currently working without any income due to the government shutdown. It is a concept in the very beginning stage and the meeting is to determine if the idea should move forward. All squadron members will be kept aware of what transpires as a result of the meeting (or meetings). Be Safe! Be Active! --Bill Behrens Commander ■

From the Exec Officer Lt/C Charlie Richardson, JN.

This is my first report since you elected me to be your Executive Officer for the 2019-2020 Squadron year. It has been thirty-one years since I held this office. I joined the United States Power Squadrons, in 1958 as a member of the “Norwalk, Connecticut Power Squadron”. Upon moving to Fort Myers Beach in 1981 I transferred my membership to the “San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron”. During the past thirty-eight years I have had many duties and held many offices including Commander and Squadron Education Officer. Teaching is my main interest. What does the Executive Officer do? Unlike the Administrative Officer who deals mostly with things within our squadron, (C&R’s, Events like the Change of Watch and other boating and social activities), the Executive Officer is mostly involved with things outside the squadron. Some of the areas under the Executive Officer are: Public Relations, Liaison, Cooperative Charting, Vessel Safety Check, Safe Boating Week and Boat Shows. I will be asking for assistance with these activities. We expect to participate in two Boat Shows, the Spring show (usually held in Bonita Springs) and the Fort Myers Boat Show in November. We will also be promoting Safe Boating Week in May. Ron Terciak has agreed to continue to lead our Vessel Safety Check committee and to handle the publicity for our classes. Thanks Ron. If you are interested in assisting with any of these events feel free to contact me. The best way is with email, [email protected] I also respond quickly to text messages (239) 634-0233. Our Squadron is off to a great start, to date we are in second place in the District with Vessel Safety Checks. Our inspectors are lining up their contacts to continue with inspections. Great work. I am also your Webmaster and am proud to report that our Website has received the Distinctive Communicator award for 2018. See you next month, Charlie ■

We graduated 9 students from our January ABC class and several will be joining us as Squadron members. We expect a full Local Waters class in January. Just keep in mind that many of the people who join our Squadron first come to know us through these courses. Please continue to spread the word about these courses to your friends. In terms of advanced classes, Doy McPhail started leading his 4 students through the new Boat Handling (formerly Seamanship) class and Charlie Richardson is starting Piloting toward the end of January. We have a few people who may be interested in enrolling in Advanced Piloting, so if you are as well, please let me know and we'll try to make the course available later this spring. ■

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ▲

Amazon Smile

Hello Everyone, the retailer, AMAZON, has a method by which they contribute to charitable organizations for any and all purchases you make with them.

Our squadron is an official charitable organization and if you take a few minutes and set this up Amazon will contribute .5% of the purchase price to our squadron.

They tie your setup to your login name and password. For the initial setup, and afterwards each time you login to Amazon. use the following: www.Smile.Amazon.com

Basically, you login to www.smile.amazon.com, follow the prompts to select your charitable organization (select San Carlos Bat Sail & Power Squadron) and when finished it will be completed and will apply each time you login to www.Smile.Amazon.com.

Near the top of your screen, when logged into Amazon, you will see a notation “Supporting: United States Power Squadrons”. If you click on it you will see Fort Myers Beach under United States Power Squadron (which designates our squadron receives the donations). Our treasurer is registered with Amazon on behalf of our squadron.

Also, please share this information with friends and relatives. If they do the same thing by selecting our squadron and logging into the “smile. Amazon” address this could be a meaningful source for some “extra” income for the squadron. Thank you, Bill Behrens

Past Commanders Column

Lt/C Ron Terciak, JN.

My San Carlos Bay Sail & Power Squadron Family, The word family is often used carelessly, and the word friend is likewise used sometimes without any solid basis. In the case of our squadron the word “family” has never meant so much to me. The word “friend” has certainly defined itself with all the people that are helping in so many different and wonderful ways. Since the onset of my illness in early September, 20I8, I have received cards, prayers, and strong words of hope. Carole and I have also received offers for rides to treatment, which we have accepted, and rides for food shopping. My boat has been cleaned and fueled in the event I might be able to use it in the near future. My bathroom has been outfitted for handicap use with new plumbing and a seat for the tub, both of which were an immensely needed help. I have had a walker lent to me, and company on Sunday afternoons to watch the Patriots. I have had food deliveries including “Boost” which I drink three bottles a day. The list of people stepping forward and helping with so many things goes on and on. The offers of help have been overwhelming and sometimes brings tears to my eyes knowing how many people, especially in the squadron, care about me. I just recently had a conversation with a squadron member and, when his generosity was offered and I began to protest, he answered perfectly when he said “Ron, we are family”. I do not know with any degree of certainty what my future holds for me, but you all have made the journey in which I am traveling much easier, and my strength and resolve to fight the cancer with all my might stronger knowing of your wonderful support to Carole and me. Words cannot adequately describe my deep gratitude and sincere thankfulness to all of the members of “my family”. Ron & Carole Terciak ■

When Audrey and I visited Ron and Carole at their home in Maine a few years ago, we had a great time. Ron treated us to a wonderful day on the Songo River Queen through the locks. Ron is an amazing captain, I would go anywhere with him in a boat. Ron and Carole also took us on his personal boat to lunch at an island restaurant. To top it all off they took us to a special restaurant for twin lobsters. We will always remember our time there. Charlie & Audrey Richardson Thanks to Ron, an outstanding example of a "servant leader"-- true leader and great friend, always ready to jump in and offer help, and bring people together to make everyone feel welcome. Melissa Butler Although we have just recently joined the SCBPS, we can easily say Ron has been the most helpful member of the squadron. Ron and Carole have invited us into their home and given us great advice.

Tim & Vicky Cordes

Ron, anyone who knows you can understand why we often mention you to our family (and others) as an example of someone who is unselfish, giving and ready with a genuine can-do spirit. You make the world a better place. You are without a doubt, one of the warmest, most congenial individuals that we have ever had the extreme pleasure of interacting with and enjoying some social banter. Lawrence and Lynn Tobias A note about Ron Terciak- to most of us Ron is the 'face' of our squadron. Not because he was the commander or other held positions, but because he was the first to reach out his hand to greet u. He welcomes everyone with a warm handshake and with sincere request to join 'his' squadron family - and it is truly his family. Probably making Carole jealous at times, but she knows how much the squadron means to him. And the stories of his adventures as the skipper on the stern-wheeler up north or his local sagas on his Grady White. Two of those stories that I recall: The day the free-spirited nudists chartered the entire boat! Another one is when his fuel leaked into the Grady’s bilge and that he discovered it while pumping out when the bilge pump failed. He said that the fuel had morphed the plastic housing of the pump into a Salvador Dali creation! God was watching over Ron then, as it could have easily exploded. Now God continues to watch over him. Godspeed Ron. Ted Schindler Continued on next page

Last summer, due to my decreasing eyesight and mobility, my boat needed attention. Upon visiting my boat, I found Ron completing an excellent cleaning. After thanking I asked "Why". Ron's response: "That's what friends do". That's our Ron.

Robert Amerine Since we brought our boat to the Shell Point Marina four years ago, we have been blessed with a most helpful and knowledgeable neighbor because a couple of slips over sits “Irish Rover” captained by Ron T. In addition to inspecting our boat “Madgical” Ron has offered advice and assistance on more occasions than I can cite. He has also taken us along for squadron lunches. So, it was heartwarming last week when my wife and I were taking tickets at a Shell Point concert to have Ron show up. We chatted briefly about his ordeal and treatment challenge. Knowing how much time Ron likes to spend in the marina and on his boat, we will not be surprised when he shows up earlier than we should expect. Madge and I are ready for that encounter, Chuck Ringbakk I’ve always thought Ron is the energizer bunny in the flesh. He never seems to tire as he endlessly works on Squadron activities. His goal is always the betterment of SCBSPS and for the continued boating education for us all. He welcomed Wayne and I immediately when we joined the Squadron and got us involved right away. He helped both of us to understand what was required of us when we held officer positions. Through classes, meetings, lunches, dinners, District and National meetings, and C&R’s, he makes himself available. He and Carole together are such a great team, always there and always reaching out. We are grateful for his friendship Wayne & Judy Berger Ron and I joined the squadron a few months apart, Ron 1/25/03 and me 4/15/02. We came up the ranks together, in 2006 when I became commander Ron was my Administrative Officer and my right-hand man. At that time the squadron was failing and we weren’t sure it would go on, but together we managed to get things back on track. As you all know Ron continued helping out the squadron for the next 13 years and continues to do so. Ron & Carole have invited us to his home and on his boat “Irish Rover” a few times and they have on my boat as well. We always have a great time together. I am pleased to call Ron My Friend. Thanks for everything, Ron. John & Marie Ragone

Ron, I'll never forget your kindness to me when I attended my first squadron meeting not knowing anyone there. You introduced yourself, introduced me to others, and made me feel totally comfortable and welcome. For that I'll be forever grateful. Also, in my dealings with you regarding squadron business, I've appreciated your help and advice, and always being available to answer any questions or concerns. You are an excellent leader and a valuable source of support. Most importantly, a good long-distance phone friend! John Swenson

Hi Ron, I was a transfer from the internet to SCB squadron. You were 1st person who contacted me, you asked where in Maine I was from since you recognized my 207 area code(we only have 1 area code even though we are almost as big as all New England put together and only have a million people and are actually outnumbered by moose).Told you I lived on Cobbossecconte Lake(also known as beautiful Lake Woebegone). You said you were from Sebago Lake area, about 90 minutes from me and you were captain of Songo River Queen, the 98' paddle boat every Maniac knows. You helped me to run my new Florida boat and showed me how to find my way to Marker 101.Every time I approach Sanibel Causeway, I stay far to port close to Sanibel lighthouse the way you taught me. You and Carole visited Jane and I every summer in Maine and we visited you @ Sebago Lake. Hope to see you both at our house again this summer for lobsters, steamers and a boat ride. Wishing you spectacular sunrises, superior sunsets and smooth sailing on the sea of life. Keep the faith my brother. Extra Extra. Read all about it. Ron Terciak. My GOOD FRIEND, mentor, guide and all-around squadron and boating buddy. Ron became ill with the dreaded cancer disease and, when diagnosed, he immediately launched into a fight to survive. Oh sure, he has had some ups and downs but he fights on, determined to win and send the disease out of his system and away for good. In the squadron Ron never sat still, always doing something to further the squadron and its members, tackling any job that needed doing, and is now striving to beat the cancer, send it totally away and return to doing all he can for the squadron and squadron members which he truly views as his “family”. As his squadron “brother” I am doing all I can to assist him in his fight against the disease and I know he will not quit, no matter what. He is, and will always be, a very important part of our squadron, as well as a highly respected USPS member at the District level and National level, and I wish him prayers and a speedy recovery from the cancer illness, and I, and many, many others look forward to his return as a full-time active squadron member and “family” member.

Bill Behrens.

Dear Ron - we learned of the Squadron and its existence from an education ad in our local paper. Being new to FL and its waters we decided to take these classes - and the rest is history. We became members and were SWORN IN BY YOU in February 2013. You took us in with open arms and for months and years - till this day - you always have a hug and a smile for us every time we meet. And for that, our dear friend, AND FOR YOUR TIRELESS INVOLVEMENT with your beloved Squadron, WE THANK YOU ❤ AND LOVE YOU - Luke and Eva Luke & Eva Cecil Hi Ron, Boating has been more fun since we met you. Blessings, Joe & Lee Aten Ron: Thank you for being so helpful and welcoming when we joined the squadron. Get well quickly and fully. Michael & Robin Kohl When Susan and I first joined the squadron, Ron seemed to be everywhere. He made sure we were welcomed and introduced at meetings and C&Rs. He was always available to answer questions or help with paperwork. One day, my doorbell rang and there was Ron, delivering our brand-new name badges! He provided a strong, competent and very welcoming presence for us when we were new and continued to be available for us anytime. Ron's friendliness and assistance gave us a very positive experience during our early days in the organization and continue to do so to this day. Rob and Susan Lysaght Ron the photographer... standing on the dock early in the morning with a smile on his face ready to take our picture as we emerged from our cabin. Ron the mentor... always ready with helpful advice for us newbie boaters. Ron the organizer... making sure everything was in place for the C & R’s. Ron the friend... welcoming us into the squadron and making sure we were included in the activities. Marsha & Ed Mehmel

My story is Ron came to our lakeside house in Maine and announced he was making me dinner, as we always had Maine lobster and clams. He said he was bringing everything and would take over my kitchen...WoW...After a day of jet skiing on our lake and enjoying a different water sport, he did in fact cook a fabulous dinner. Encrusted pork tenderloin, roasted asparagus and red potatoes and a fabulous berry pie for desert! We were in heaven.... Jane Aube Like Ron and Carole, we live at Shell Point. They are great neighbors. For example: A few years ago, my wife Dee and I were in the pavilion recovering from a serious auto accident. Ron came to visit and asked how he could help. We asked him to retrieve a few items from our sail boat. Of course, he did that and more, stopping frequently to cheer us up. He is so generous with his time and so willing to help. On one of those visits he recounted his recent sailing adventure to the Keys and back with Dave Lum. He had us in stitches with his tales of misery. Hey Ron, we bet you never thought you’d look back on that trip as the “good old days”. Best wishes, Dee Whited & Lee Moore Mr. Ron Terciak is what can be described as a man of substance. Always eager to help. Always there to talk. A friend always by your side or easily a phone call away. Few people in this world are friendly, kind, polite, sympathetic and a "Mench". Ron has these qualities and more. May 2019 bring good health and happiness to him and his family. Dr. Scott C. Schwartz Ron, you are the most enthusiastic and committed representative of SCBPS we have had the pleasure of experiencing in a long time. Every now and then someone comes along and just gets "IT". You have been that guy for us. We all know we can count on you, and we want you to know that we are there for you. Doy McPhail Only having been with the squadron for 5 years this February, I don't have a lot of history. Having been involved with other organizations in the past, the one thing that impressed me about Ron was that he always made new members feel welcome. One of our first C&R's was at Snook Bight for a lunch. Ron made sure we sat at a table with some long-time squad members. I really made a difference and kept us coming back. Ron was the first person to welcome us to the Squadron. His love for this Squadron and its members is very evident in his willingness to serve by giving his time and talents. We pray for Ron's full recovery. Al & Marianne Ponzio Ron is the face of our SCBSP squadron --- he has led our squadron through the good and bad times with great energy, much dedication and always keeping in mind our members. Here Ann's...…. Ron spells out reliable (always there for the squadron), optimistic (problem solving) and nice (sociable to all). Dave & Ann Lum

Ron, we met you when the San Carlos Bay Power Squadron joined the FMB Chamber. Each time we met, you spoke about the Squadron and your love for it was clear for us to see. You encouraged Scott and I to take the ABC Course and invited us to become members of the Power Squadron. Your clear love and dedication to SCBPS spoke to both of us and we are so pleased to have become a part of the San Carlos Bay Power Squadron family. We admire your passion for boating education and are honored to have become your friend. As you move through this difficult part of your life, please know that we are here to help with anything you need. We know you will be ship shape soon and we are looking forward to hoisting an adult beverage with you in the near future. Tight lines my friend, fair winds and smooth sailing are straight ahead! Jacki Liszak What can I say about Ron? He is the "soul" of our squadron. When we joined, Ron made us feel welcome, as he does with all new members. He has the personal skill to remember everyone's name. How many hats has he worn? Is there any hat that he has not worn? Everything from Commander to squadron photographer. What a great guy! Tony & Sylvia DiVenere "Ron was so kind to welcome us to the Squadron. He came to our table at the annual meeting and introduced himself. We're all looking forward to getting to know him better and wish him the best in getting well." Carolyn, Barry and Barrett Ahlemeier

Ron arrived at SCBPS about the time I began. He wasted no time jumping in to help the squadron operate. He encouraged me to teach Local Waters when the previous teacher left. We had some tough years when it seemed no one wanted to accept leadership. But Ron always stepped forward, leading the Squadron for a number of years! He never got discouraged, or at least didn’t show it. I want to thank him for his efforts over and above what anyone could ask! Bob Johnson

Ron is such an inspiration to us! We love his adventurous spirit, love of life, and of people. We appreciate the time and commitment he has given and continues to give even now to the Power Squadron. He is a fighter with a strong will to carry on and he motivates others to do the same. We are always happy to see Ron. He's that type of guy. He always has a smile and makes us feel welcome. He also goes out of his way to help others. When we first joined the Power Squadron and our name tags were ready, he would not allow us to pick them up. He insisted he deliver them to us. Service to others before self. It is our pleasure and gain to be privileged to know him. Steve and Priscilla Mortonson

When I joined the Squadron, Ron was the incoming Commander and he had the answers to my many questions, introduced me to the others and recommended the educational courses I should take. He and Carol were so friendly and his involvement and his enthusiasm were clearly contagious. No longer with a boat and with all my years of experience in deep water he counseled me to learn about the shallow waters of my new home. When he found out that I was now more focused on golf he invited me to join the golf league at Shell Point — to my surprise, and the surprise of others I'm sure — I was now playing in a men’s league. Brenda Battles and I were the only two gals. AND because of the way the league was arranged you were assigned a partner for the entire season and competed against the other paired twosomes. I thought he was brave to include me without seeing my game. Moreover, he was a man who put his money where his mouth was bc he took me as his partner the first year. I didn’t disappoint and we finished close to the top that year. The following year, my new assigned partner rolled with it bc of Ron’s stellar example and my new golf partner and I were off to a successful and fun season. Thank you, Ron, — you are truly a star! There are all sorts of nice things to say about Ron and we had a list of many examples. In the end, though, it all amounts to one thing. Ron is a heck of a nice guy and he'd do anything to help any one of us if he could. Let's keep him in our thoughts and prayers and will him back to good health. Howard and Nancy Chambers We have had many good memories with Ron and Carole. One story that comes to mind is when John and I had just purchased our Sea Ray 2003 and just getting used to using our boat. Ron, Carole, John and I were returning from our Ruskin C & R in October or early November 2003. On the way home, seeing that the gas was getting low, and not exactly sure if we had enough gas to get back to our slip at Deep Lagoon Marina, we stopped at South Seas Plantation. Of course, it was just after 5:00 pm and the Marina was closed. OK, so we said we will just hang out here! So, we all went into the pool at South Seas. No one else was around, if one can believe that! We then sat on the boat at night and ate lots of snacks left over from our trip and, of course, drinks. John put up the Isinglass and Ron and Carole slept up top. Next morning, we filled up the boat and off we went to Deep Lagoon. Looking back, after getting used to the boat, John said we would have had enough gas to return that evening to FMB. However, that nights experience turned into a great memory. Also, I must say that Ron LOVES cream puffs. Well, at least the ones I used to make! So, he wanted the recipe and I gave it to him. After he made his, he told me that something went wrong and they didn’t “puff”. I swore to him that I gave him all the correct ingredients and my exact method! We all laughed about those “unpuffed” Puffs! Thanks for all you have done for us and the Squadron…. Love Ya, Ron. Marie Ragone Ron —- just to let you know that we think of you often. We are so sorry that you are fighting this battle, but know that you are strong. I have always admired your enthusiasm and dedication for the power squadron as you have led us through some difficult times —- you are one of the reasons we joined! I hope you can find that same strength to continue fighting. May you be encouraged in knowing that so many are praying for you and Carole. Hang in there! AN INVITATION TO All QUAD SQUAD MEMBERS

A REMINDER FOR SOME – AN ANNOUNCEMENT FOR SOME – INFORMATION FOR ALL

(An informational email was previously sent out regarding this meeting, but the date and location were not announced at that time)

The below described special meeting is FREE, but registration (see below) is required.

The Quad Squads are encouraging all squadron members (and guests) who (1) have a carry-concealed permit for a firearm and/or (2) those that have a firearm in their home, to seriously consider obtaining insurance coverage specific to the self-defense use of a firearm. If/when a firearm is used by an individual, the legal issues, both criminal and civil, can become very intense and very costly, and without proper and specific insurance coverage, it could be devastating for the average person. That is why this upcoming meeting is being planned so as to provide focused information so members (and their guests) are properly informed and aware of the ramifications from the use of a firearm for self-defense. Accordingly, we have asked one of the insurance carriers to speak to the overall insurance issues and also discuss the various coverage aspects available, as well as discuss a comparison of the differences of the carrier coverages and costs. These aspects will be presented and discussed by an attorney at the upcoming meeting. The attorney is an expert on the legal issues, and insurance coverage aspects, regarding firearm use for self-defense, whether in one’s home or elsewhere. A special firearm insurance coverage meeting is scheduled for: Monday Evening at the Cape Coral Sail & Power Squadron Building February 18, 2019 917 SE 47th Terrace 6:30 p.m. Cape Coral, FL It has been requested that each Quad Squad squadron commander send this message out to their squadron membership so all of the members of the Quad Squads (and their specific guests) have an opportunity to attend this meeting if they wish to do so. It is requested that if a member is planning on attending, they register by notifying their commander (or designated person) of that fact and indicate how many will be attending, so as to allow proper planning for the meeting. Those members that previously expressed an interest in attending please register as described. Your cooperation will be very much appreciated. Please respond no later than Friday, February 1, 2019. Thank you. Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
