This year our benefit is dedicated to the memory of Cathey Magill, who lost her battle at the very young age of 42 on October 10th. For a long time Cathey had proudly posted on her blog that she was a breast cancer survivor ~ and through the power of her blog, she was personally responsible for generating dozens and dozens of donations to our silent auction the past number of years, donations coming to us from needleworkers all over the world. Cathey was married and, besides her husband, is survived by her son, Junior, who turned 18 months old on the day Cathey died. When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976, I was pretty cavalier about the possibility of my having to worry about this disease, thinking that by the time I was old enough to have to worry about it, they will surely have found a cure. Unfortunately, it’s even worse now. Then 1 in 20 women were being diagnosed ~ today it is 1 in 8. Today funding for research is needed more than ever. BCRF President, Myra Biblowit, says, “At a time when sequestration threatens medical research budgets nationwide, the role of the individual and the private sector could not be more critical. To eradicate this disease that continues to affect far too many women, men, and families across the world, we need a mass commitment.” I hope that you will join our efforts in bidding on the fabulous donations needleworkers from across the globe have made and donated to this benefit.

This year our benefit is dedicated to the memory of Cathey Magill, who lost her battle at the very young age of 42 on October 10th. For a long time Cathey had proudly posted on her blog that she was a breast cancer survivor ~ and through the power of her blog, she was personally responsible for generating dozens and dozens of donations to our silent auction the past number of years, donations

Kudos to Alice! There are so many people who contribute to the success of this event, including hundreds of needleworkers from around the globe whose work you are about to see, but there is one generous and kind woman who is, I know, uncomfortable receiving any kind of recognition, but I know that you’d want to know that this breast-cancer survivor, as she has done each year for the past number of years, has made and donated the first 50+ items that you are about to see. I know you will agree that she is an incredibly gifted needlewoman, a survivor whose gift with her needle is an inspiration to all of us. Thank you, Alice, for your unselfish donation of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours of needlework. All of us admire not only your strength, courage, and tenacity in beating this disease but your unparalleled talent and generosity in producing and donating your eclectic group of items for this event. As you will see as you view these donations, Alice alone is responsible for raising thousands! And this is an annual gift that she gives to this Benefit. I’m sure you’re not surprised to learn that she’s already working on next year’s donations.

Mark your calendars now and plan to be with us for our 16th Annual BCRF Benefit ~ and help raise funds for breast cancer research!

This event has grown considerably these past 16 years. The first year we raised about $1500. This year our goal is many times that. When it began, it was staffed by the Attic's staff, and still is for the most part at Saturday night’s party ~ but there are so many of you now who volunteer your time to help make this happen. It wouldn't happen without you, most especially three very special ladies. For weeks Angelica and Sheri, below, have been spending their Fridays in the shop recording/registering the donations, numbering them, and displaying them on the garlands, so that Carol, below right, can photograph them for these BCRF newsletters for all of you to see ~ and BID ON!

This year again the Silent Auction, with the help of dear Tess and her friends, will be held at The Gathering Place, 1837 West Guadalupe Rd., Mesa, which is now right next door to The Attic. It’s conveniently located a mile east of Loop 101 on Guadalupe Road. Final bidding (with wonderful Costco-prepared hors d'oeuvres and refreshments) from 6 ~ 8 PM on Saturday night, November 23. Bidding closes promptly at 8 PM.

Sheri & Angelica tagging donations.

Come Saturday night and see Tess’s “pink”

tree and help decorate the tree with the name

of a survivor, “In Honor of,” or someone you

wish to remember, “In Memory of.”

Thank you, Carol, for all of

the beautiful photographs!
