Find us on

In 1599, Sir William Temple, a renowned teacher and

philosopher, entered the service of the Lord Deputy of Ireland.

In 1609, Temple was made Provost of Trinity College, Dublin

and Master Chancery in Ireland and moved to this country.

Sir William Temple built his house and gardens on newly

reclaimed land here on the corner of Temple Lane and the street

called Temple Bar. In 1656, his son, Sir John Temple, acquired

additional land which, with reclamation made possible by the

building of a new sea wall, allowed the development of the area

we now know as Temple Bar.

In the 17th century “Barr” (later shortened to Bar) usually meant

a raised estuary sandbank often used for walking on. Thus the

river Liffey embankment alongside the Temple family's plot

became known as Temple's Barr or simply, Temple Bar.

Later this evolved into the present thoroughfare connecting this

whole area from Westmoreland Street to Fishamble Street.

A survey conducted under the

umbrella of the institute of food

Technologists has concluded

that Guinness really does taste

better in Ireland. The study

consisted of fieldwork carried

out over an 11-month period by

four researchers from countries

with a long brewing tradition:

Ireland, England, The

Netherlands and Germany. They

all used identical equipment, but

central to each test was a visual

analogue scale, scoring the

pint's taste on a scale of 0 to

100. The average Irish pint rated

74, while the average from all

other countries rated 57. The

four-man team did admit

however, that the 'craic' or

'ambiance of the Irish drinking

environment could influence its

quality judgements. A total of

103 pints were consumed in 71

pints across 14 countries, but

the researchers did admit,

however, that further study was

needed to backup their

preliminary findings. The

findings were published in the

journal of Food Science, a

monthly periodical of not-for-

profit group.
