Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Sarah Colfer, Founder of Little

Bevan for an exlusive interview

Did you grow up always wanting to be designer? Quietly independent, I knew that I wanted to develop my own business – but wasn’t sure quite what it would be. I came to designing children’s clothes simply as I felt I was answering a niche need. I’ve always made things, since a child, making toys, altering my mother’s cool 60’s dresses for my sister and I to wear, making colourful waistcoats and party dresses as a student. I named the business Little Bevan after my mother, who had encouraged me to be creative.

For many young people you may seem to have a dream job, what advice would you give to those who want to follow a career in fashion design?Be true to yourself, but also keep an eye on the commercial. As you develop your design idea, listen to what customers may need. Build up a good variety of work experience – you can pick up all sorts of tips for the future, but also make valuable contacts in the industry.

Where do you get your inspiration for your collections? The Little Bevan style is fresh, romantic and elegant and inspired by English vintage clothes. As a child I pored over illustrations by Kate Greenaway and the classic pictures of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. I love the swagger of the fashions from the Restoration period, up to the romantic luxury of the 18th century – as in paintings by Gainsborough and Lely. But I also love the tailored wit of the 1950’s!

What advice do you have for parents about choosing special occasion clothes? If you feel good inside a dress, you’ll look your best too – and this applies to all ages! Most children love dressing up – even the tiniest rise to the occasion! I had three 2 year olds following me round the cloisters and up the aisle on my wedding day. It’s so important that children and teenagers feel comfortable and so can then be free to be themselves (on best behaviour!). The best accolade is when they are so delighted with their ‘look’ that they just won’t take off their special outfit – I know one tiny boy who slept in his velvet pageboy suit for a month after!

How would you like the Little Bevan brand to develop? We have steadily built a reputation for producing enchanting and exquisite clothes, and established a unique position as a London couturier for children. I have now added a collection for teens and adults, called Bella Bevan, of cute cocktail dresses which complement the children’s clothes perfectly. I hope that we can continue to offer our special service for all ages as one of the most fun aspects of planning a very special occasion; and I’d like to take this little piece of London around the globe! If you could go on holiday anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?I have a real attachment to the Far East – I was born in Malaysia and have family based in Hong Kong – maybe that’s why I have a love of coloured silks. So, my ideal holiday would be to take my husband and little daughter on an adventure to explore the colourful and ancient cultures of Cambodia and Laos. http://www.littlebevan.co.uk/

INTERVIEW

Page 9: The Summer Issue - Hot Brands Cool Places August 2012

9

How did your previous experience help you in creating My Heart and Home?I trained as a textile and clothing designer and have designed children’s and teen ranges for a number of high street brands. That background combined with having three children of my own gives me a good grounding for choosing the product range I put together for ‘My Heart and Home’.

How did you make the transition from selling at weekend fairs to running a successful online business?Selling at fairs was an opportunity to start my business with very low overheads and find out about my target market, what my customers like and for them to meet me. I’m a big fan of building up a local customer base and supporting other local businesses too. When you sell at fairs though the one thing everyone asks is “Are you online?” and so investing in a website was the next inevitable step to take. I still sell at fairs as I love the buzz of the sale, having the customer contact and of course it’s a great way of building up a loyal customer base. People buy from people and hopefully by meeting and chatting with me they’ll remember to pop back and take a look at my site.

How do you know that a product is right for My Heart and Home?My range has a very distinctive look. Quintessentially English if you like. The range has a certain charm that harks back to a time of childhood innocence and freedom, something that tends to be lost or at least muddled in these post internet days. I try and choose items that fit this image and that are generally unavailable on the high street. I tend to go with my own instincts when buying and if I get excited by something I know my customers will too. It doesn’t always work, but you don’t know till you try!

What advice do you have for parents about choosing nightwear? When I choose the nightwear for my range or my own children, comfort is the number one consideration. All our pyjamas are 100% soft cotton and have been designed with comfort and wear in mind. However, practical sleepwear is available in all the high street stores and so my nightwear has to be about something different. Pretty detailing, unusual prints, traditional styling combined with overall comfort are what I’m looking for when selecting the nightwear. Bedtime should be fun and whimsical too. Little boys want to wear aeroplane pyjamas to bed and little girls do like to float about in fairy nightdresses. If it appeals to children and parents alike, it’s a winning combination at bedtime.

Do you and your family have a favourite bedtime story? It has to be the Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. I read it as a child and my husband has read the series to our three children. In terms of a family favourite, this is a classic that stands the test of time. What is your favourite form of relaxation?Walking our black labrador Brigg on the common whatever the weather! It really does clear my head after the school run and before the start of my working day.

12INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Louise Thomas Co-Founder

of Little Lucy Willow for an exlusive interview.

Page 13: The Summer Issue - Hot Brands Cool Places August 2012

What inspired you to start Little Lucy Willow?

A design for a children’s bed (our infamous:http://www.littlelucywillow.co.uk/Martha-Butterfly-Bed-Product-618.html) that led us to discover a lack of design led, quality furniture that was reasonably priced.

What advice would you give to parents looking to combine imagination with practicality when planning a bedroom?

We like to think that we offer inspiration for an imaginative children’s bedroom. Being a manufacturer means we can also make anything to fit so you aren’t so restricted by access or awkward spaces. We are happy to discuss things with our customers and often come up with ways round to achieve the desired end goal. One bit of advice I would offer though is map out the dimensions of the furniture on the floor by using perhaps a newspaper as this will help to guide you with what space you have once everything is in place.

How do you see the Little Lucy Willow brand developing?

Onwards and upwards! We are experiencing an exciting time as we now have our own dedicated factory based here in England and we are designing a whole host of furniture ranges that will mean we become the one stop shop for purchasing children’s furniture.

As the summer holidays are still with us how do you combine work with family life?

This is always a tricky one however we just seem to manage. Most of our business is online and the phones tend to be quieter at weekends plus our showroom is closed on a Monday so we cram everything in then. The rest of the time is a balance between mum and the mother in law!

As an adult what makes a perfect bedroom design for you?

Uncluttered, comfortable and cosy. Soft lighting is a must.

If you could go on holiday anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Maldives. Before family and business we didn’t appreciate it....we most definitely would now!!

INTERVIEW

Believe to achieve! It’s been an amazing summer of achievement and we have been presented with so many inspirational images of individual success.

We have also seen heartbreaking images of athletes who despite all their training and commitment didn’t quite achieve the goal they had set themselves; and yet others who may have missed out previously overcoming defeat and achieving success this time.

For many of us our ambitions may seem small compared to competing in front of a global audience and yet we can learn many lessons from the achievements of athletes.

1. Whatever your ambition have it very clearly identified. Devote time to it, enjoy exploring it, make it special, create an ambition board, paper or digital and write down what you want to achieve. Believe that it is possible.

2. Research it fully, look for role models, identify who else has achieved it and how did they do it. Many people who achieve their ambitions were inspired by others.

3. Identify coaches, mentors, people with experience who will support you.

4. Keep exploring your idea, or concept, refining it, modifying it making sure that your ambition is still as strong. Being brave enough to recognise that you may have changed your mind and don’t have the commitment to follow it through, but keep looking for something else that does inspire you.

5. Start small, identify the baby steps that you can take to get started, often ambitions fail because we set the initial bar too high.

6. Avoid negative people! While it is important to really explore all the pros and cons of an idea and to have a sounding board, find positive uplifting people to do this with.

7. Develop a time-line and project plan that is realistic and achievable. This can be applied to everything from clearing out your clutter, writing your first novel, achieving a new job role to achieving a sporting target. Try and use time more productively, this is often when athletes score highly, they use time when others may still be sleeping, watching television/ using social media. Keep a time diary and see how you use your time.

8. If you need financial support, prepare a sensible plan for sponsors, partners, or financial bodies, be creative, look beyond the obvious, again seek advice.

9. Get Started and keep going! One of the major reasons why we do not achieve as much as we are capable of is apathy, we may start with enthusiasm and then run out of energy, or we may lack the belief or motivation to actually get started.

Page 19: The Summer Issue - Hot Brands Cool Places August 2012

In both cases the key is that you really want to do it, that the ambition, or desire excites you, that it gives you a fizz of excitement when you think about it, or do it.

10. Most importantly visualise success, transport yourself to the future and rehearse over and over again achieving that new job role, creating a new and welcoming home, or see yourself crossing the finishing line! Smile and enjoy the moment!

To help you we have gathered together a collection of books from the practical to the magical, but all inspiring!

Business Model You: A One-Page Method For Reinventing Your Career Timothy Clark, Alexander Osterwalder, Yves PigneurSynopsis: A one-page tool to reinvent yourself and your careerThe global bestseller Business Model Generation introduced a unique visual way to summarize and creatively brainstorm any business or product idea on a single sheet of paper. Business Model You uses the same powerful one-page tool to teach readers how to draw “personal business models,” which reveal new ways their skills can be adapted to the changing needs of the marketplace to reveal new, more satisfying, career and life possibilities

http://eu.wiley.com Hot Brands Cool Places VerdictThis book shows readers how to take business model thinking and apply it to themselves. It shows how to value your skills and understand what you want to achieve. It also helps you create a vision for change and create a model and vision for the future. Business Model You, is a very different approach to re-inventing your career, we love the layout, style and case-study format of this book and if you are looking for a creative and innovative way to review your life and career here is an excellent place to start. Highly Recommended!

InGenius: A Crash Course on Creativity by Tina SeeligSynopsis:Is the ability to creatively tackle problems innate or can it be learned? Like most human traits, both answers are correct. Some people are inherently more innovative than others. But, just like maths, or writing, everyone can improve with practice. Tina Seelig, PhD teaches creativity every day in her courses on innovation at Stanford School of Engineering. After 10 years of experience, she knows that not only can creativity be taught, but that there are a clear set of tools, skills and approaches that can unlock anyone’s creative potential.Great ideas are needed to solve all the problems we face and to enrich our lives. Whether it is in the conference room, classroom or kitchen, new ideas open up a world of wonderful possibilities.

Page 20: The Summer Issue - Hot Brands Cool Places August 2012

With the tools presented in this remarkable book, we will learn how to pull out all stops to take on the challenges, big and small, that come our way, and to see that every word, every idea, and every moment provides an opportunity for creativity that will enhance our lives.

http://www.hayhouse.co.uk/

Hot Brands Cool Places VerdictInGenius is filled with concepts, tools, techniques and stories that reveal ways you can increase your own creativity, and the creativity of others. In the first half of the book she focuses on what you can do for yourself to increase your own creativity and in the second half how you can help change the local and cultural environment to increase the creativity quotient of your community. We loved the all round approach of this book, it’s very accessible, and really makes you think differently. Highly Recommended!

The Prosperous Heart: Creating a Life of ‘Enough’ by Julia Cameron with Emma LivelySynopsis: In The Prosperous Heart, the author of the international bestseller The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron, presents a twelve-week programme for using practical financial tools - in partnership with your creative heart and soul - to guide you to prosperity in all areas of your life. According to Cameron, true prosperity has very little to do with the amount of money you have in the bank, and everything to do with the ability to understand your own (and other’s) true worth and value.

http://www.hayhouse.co.uk/

Hot Brands Cool Places VerdictWe loved The Artist’s Way, and in The Prosperous Heart Julia Cameron adopts a similar approach to help you identify which parts of your life are truly valuable and how to apply a sensible approach to your finances. She also examines how creativity can help your success and how to take a more inspired approach to life. Highly Recommended!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/

Hot Brands Cool Places VerdictIf you have read or seen The Secret, or The Power, you may be familiar with the style and approach of Rhonda Byrne, but in The Magic Rhonda applies a step-by-step 28 day programme based on the laws of attraction and showing gratitude.

What we love about this book is it encourages you to start and finish each day with positive thoughts, to be grateful for people and things we often take for granted and apply this to every aspect of your life from money, health, relationships, career and much more. INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Stéphane Reynaud author of Stéphane Reynaud’s Barbecue - 150 recipes for everything grilled,

seared and baked for an exlusive interview.

When did you first find your passion for cooking?

When I think back, all the important moments of my childhood happened around the dinner table. It’s a place where everyone can talk and share their emotions. Dinner time reflects a lot of what is happening in day-to-day life. From a very young age I wanted to experience this everyday so that’s why I became a chef! What have you enjoyed most in your career?

For me every day is enjoyable because it’s new and different. I’m always working with new products, new recipes, new customers. It’s always a pleasure to meet new people. They are one of the highlights of my job.

What is the secret of a successful barbecue? There are many different tricks but at the core of a successful barbecue is good quality meat, good weather, good friends, and good wine! Your books always have a very personal feel. When you are writing a cookery book, where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration in my restaurant and in the cooking I do every day. I love writing cookbooks and am inspirited by my love of sharing recipes with others. The day writing becomes a job rather than a joy I think I will lose inspiration.

You have written about many different types of food, if you could choose a perfect meal, what would be on the menu?

I have written about all sorts of dishes but they all share the theme that they are for every day cooking and can be made in a home kitchen. I love traditional recipes that you can take with you throughout your life. As it is the holiday season, do you have a favourite holiday escape? I like to stay in my village in France at this time of the year. Locals say the summer lasts from August 10 to 15 (yes, it is often cold!), so I love those days where you can eat out for lunch and dinner. By the end of the warm weather my wine cellar is always empty!
