2. What advice would you give to a bride looking to choose a vintage dress?

Clients coming to The Vintage Wedding Dress Company usually have their own strong sense of style, unless the client already has a clear idea of what era or style suits them, we recommend they try on a selection of vintage styles. This will help to get a clearer idea of shape and the look they want to create. For example, if you want a sleek and glamorous look, you may want to go for a 30s or 40s style, or for a more relaxed, intimate wedding, short 50s style are increasingly popular.

3. In your wonderful Decades Collection, which is your favourite era and why?

I would have to say our current 1960s dress as the shape was based on my own original 60s dress! Very simple and classic.

4. What are your plans for the future, how can you see the brand developing? We currently we sell around 350 dresses a year – the spilt is pretty even between the original vintage and our vintage-inspired Decades Collection. We will however be moving into larger premises at some point this year as we cannot cater for the amount of brides that wish to see us for a private appointment in the space we currently occupy. We are also expanding into wholesale stockists for Decades Collection worldwide, which is very exciting.

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Charlie Brear, Founder of The Vintage Wedding Dress Company, for an exclusive interview

1.What inspired you to start The Vintage Wedding Dress Company?

I styled a huge commercial in Italy and we sourced 100 wedding dresses for one of the scenes (100 brides running through the streets) ... The director wanted huge 1980s dresses but whilst sourcing I found so many beautiful dresses. It was a light bulb moment really ....a girlfriend was getting married and I was looking for something to ease me out of the long hours of being on set .... within a week I had the name, the website registered and had spent a large sum of money on my first lot of stock!

5. What advice do you give your brides about planning for their special day?

Every Bride wants to feel special and unique on their wedding day and with women being more fashion conscious a vintage gown or vintage inspired offers the alternative to a traditional wedding gown We encourage our brides to be themselves on their big day .....Their very best selves.

6. Describe your perfect honeymoon destination.

I have been very spoilt over the last 10 years with work and trips to beautiful hotels and destinations but I think for the sake of naming one it would be The Datai Langkawi – as this was our honeymoon destination.. Situated on the northwestern tip of Langkawi Island, The Datai is nestled inside an ancient tropical rainforest, with a secluded white sandy beach facing the calm Andaman Sea. It is a beautiful Hotel and the service is amazing … but it was such a special trip for us that I definitely remember it through very rose tinted glasses!Thank you so much for taking part in this interview.

INTERVIEW Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Stephanie Staub, Founder of Little Eglantine for an exclusive interview

Special things for Little People

Page 11: Hot Brands Cool Places The Wedding Issue

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Stephanie Staub, Founder of Little Eglantine for an exclusive interview

1. Your childhood sounds fascinating, looking back what did you enjoy the most?

I was born in Paris but spent most of my childhood in the Loire Valley. The memories I am most fond of are the cultural abundance of the Parisian museums, the Parisian sense of fashion and the peace I found in walking for hours in the woods and fields in the Loire Valley.

2. Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

It is a secret! But I will let you in to this one! I look at the colours nature provides us with, I mix in the memories of a walk in old Oxford along the Thames or a visit to the Windsor Castle; I add into it the charm of Rigny Usse castle, which also inspired Perrault to create the Sleeping Beauty. And last but not least, the elements and desires of the brides-to-be.

3. What does your typical day look like?

Every day is a journey into the unknown! I love spending as much time as possible in helping my clients to find the perfect design and fabric for their wedding, which means drawing and rearranging proposals until it reaches their full satisfaction. I also attend the questions and feedback of our workshop and the fabric’s providers.

4. What are your hopes for Little Eglantine?

My hope is to keep our creative level up; to be able to propose new beautiful dresses every year which live up to our customers’ expectation.

5. As this is our wedding issue, what advice would you give to Brides about their special day?

Relax! Delegate as much as you can and take one day off with your fiancé the day before the wedding!

6. Where do you think is a perfect honeymoon location?

I enjoy Mauritius in bloom in December, its natural beauty and the friendliness of the people. I also enjoyed China with its fading cultural history and recommend going there before all ethnic cultural heritage is affected. (A trip down the River Li is something you will never forget).

Thank you so much for taking part in this interview.

1. You met your husband Paul in Rio De Janerio and then went on to travel the world before setting up Apostle; that sounds a very romantic beginning to a company. How much of that free spirit have you been able to retain in your day-to-day working life?

Not enough but as much as we can! Our travels have given us experiences from which we draw on a daily basis. That curiosity about the world we live in is something we hope to pass on to our children. We have seen so many beautiful places in the world and we believe that through Apostle and our passion for purity we can do our bit to protect the amazing planet we live on. We still love to travel and do so as much as we can, but with a company to run and three young children we can’t get away as often as we would like. Having said that, we are off to Italy tomorrow! What have been your business highlights?

Launching Apostle and seeing our very first sale was a wonderful moment. Getting to launch was an arduous process and seeing what had just been an idea spring into life made all the hard work worthwhile. Also theamazing feedback we have had from customers and people involved in our industry has given me a real buzz.

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Emma Denham, Co-Founder of Apostle, for an exclusive interview

What are your hopes for Apostle as it grows?

That we will help people to understand that natural does not mean a compromise. It really is possible to buy fantastic natural products that work. We would love to persuade the traditional beauty customer that they can find pure, natural alternatives and support some amazing innovative businesses at the same time.

It is also incredibly important to me that as Apostle grows it continues to be known for purity, quality, integrity and great customer service.

Page 23: Hot Brands Cool Places The Wedding Issue

INTERVIEWWhen are your essential items when you go travelling?

I never go anywhere without a Lip Balm (currently Bamford’s lovely Pink Grapefruit, Peppermint and Rose Organic lip balm), a great moisturizer (Antipodes Divine Face Oil on this trip), a Swiss Army penknife and a cashmere wrap for chilly evenings and snuggling up with little children.

As this is our wedding issue, what advice would you give to Brides about their special day?

Don’t make any changes to your skincare routine too close to your wedding. Often a change to natural from non-natural brands can lead to a detox reaction in your skin from all the active ingredients and this can take a week or two to calm down.

Plan in advance to get your skin in great shape with products which are suited to your skin type. Get into a routine of cleansing morning and night and exfoliating twice a week to remove all the dead skin cells and keep your skin fresh and bright. This will also help the moisturizers you apply afterwards to penetrate further.

Finally, planning a wedding can be a very stressful time, so take a little time out to relax. Run yourself a bath before bed, add a relaxing bath oil, light some candles, pop on a face mask and lie back and relax. Even if you only have 10 minutes it can really help. And remember, nothing beats a good night’s sleep and plenty of water!

Where do you think is a perfect honeymoon location?

Well, we spent a week on safari in the Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania, a week at Fundu Lagoon and a week at Chumbe Island, both just off the coast of Zanzibar. Three amazing weeks of wildlife, diving, relaxing and eating - I can’t imagine anything more perfect than that.

Thank you so much for taking part in this interview.

Sarah Gristwood takes up the story in 1919, when Princess Patricia of Connaught revived the tradition of royal brides marrying in Westminster Abbey, and goes on to examine the weddings of the Queen Mother (1923), the Queen (1947), and Princess Margaret in 1960. Lastly, Tracy Borman brings the book right up to date, with accounts of the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer through to the fanfare that will celebrate the nuptials of Kate and William.

Every kind of wedding features – from those attended by great public celebrations, to the many that took place in private chapels, parish churches and even in secret.

Fascinating anecdotal details are revealed in the course of this most informative and entertaining overview of royal weddings through history, some amusing, some poignant, some bawdy. The Ring and the Crown places the royal wedding of the heir to the throne in historical perspective, and it does so with carefully selected illustrations that help make the authors’ insights come even more vividly alive.

www.thesleeproom.com James HareChoosing a wedding dress that is beautiful and unique is probably at the top of every brides list. When choosing the fabric for your wedding dress think about, style, design structure and comfort. There is a big difference between buying a dress from a retailer and choosing the material that is tailored towards your personality and exclusive taste. It maybe that you are one for sticking to the tradition and opt for a white silk/ ivory dress that screams white wedding. However there are various materials around that would make your dress extra special and unique. Vintage lace and 1940’s inspired designs are very popular this season.
