THESTYLEMATE

No man is an island …

… is a line from the piece by British poet John Donne, which has earned

almost eternal status as the title of novels, songs and films. But even if no man is

an island, everyone desires islands: They are places of longing. When we think

of islands, we think first of the smaller and larger land elevations in the seas and

oceans, lakes and rivers. But in the figurative sense, islands can also be special

places in cities and regions. Islands always stand for the exceptional; often for

peace, relaxation and isolation. Anima, the garden that André Heller conjured up

from the desert near Marrakesh, is one such island. This edition of STYLEMATE

focuses entirely on these islands. This includes proper islands, and special places

and hotels form islands of relaxation for travellers. Travel with STYLEMATE to

these special places. We’d be delighted if reading inspires you to want to

see these islands in person.

ISLANDS OF LONGINGISLANDS ARE ALWAYS SOMETHING SPECIAL, REAL OR MYTHICAL PLACES OF LONGING, OFTEN A LITTLE

UNCONVENTIONAL. THEY ARE PERFECT WHEN THEY ARE OPEN TO NEW THINGS, WITHOUT GIVING UP THEIR

INDEPENDENCE. WHOLLY INCOMPLETE ISLAND HOPPING.

“Island people all have the same mentality,

anywhere in the world.” Vincenzo Apuzzo

knows what he’s talking about. His par-

ents come from the Italian mainland, from

Sorrento near Naples, but he was born on

an island, specifically in England. Togeth-

er with his Swiss wife Stephanie, he has

travelled the world, spending many years

living in Asia before finally landing on Sar-

dinia. Here in the North-East of the island,

in Palau, the two now manage a small but

successful diving centre. Each day during

the season, he takes guests on his mod-

ern diving boat to the best places in the

“La Maddalena Archipelago” National Park

and the “Lavezzi” Marine Park, which is part

of Corsica. Sea bass, which gather in large

numbers and impressive sizes at a site near

Corsica, barracudas, moray eels, crayfish,

bream and mullets are the highlights, when

divers explore the underwater fauna and

flora against the setting of the impressive

rock formations. “Nature is our capital,” says

Vincenzo, who everyone here calls “Winnie”.

Although he has already lived here for ten

years, he has remained an “outsider” on Sar-

dinia. A fact he doesn’t take too seriously –

it’s part of the island mentality.

Château Pétrus on the island

Marco Fonnesu is no outsider. On Santa

Maria, one of the small, scarcely populated

islands of the Maddalena archipelago, his

family has owned “La Casitta” for 28 years.

Here – in the heart of the conservation area

– he has developed a first-class resort from

two villas, which were originally only intend-

ed for private use. His intention is to make

a connection with the proud tradition of the

island of Sardinia as a luxury oasis for the

mega- rich. Although Marco sets great store

by the “inner wealth” of his visitors, a little bit

of external wealth doesn’t harm in light of the

high demands he places on his services. La

Casitta offers six bedrooms, just enough for

a small group with bodyguards. Guests can

either arrive by private yacht or helicopter. If

you don’t have either of these to hand, Marco

can collect you from Porto Cervo, the holi-

day resort for the rich and beautiful on the

Costa Smeralda founded by Aga Khan IV. at

the start of the 1960s. La Casitta is not just

for sleeping. It is also a top-class restaurant

for up to 100 guests. It goes without saying

that regional products are transformed into

culinary delicacies wherever possible. But

Sardinia does not provide the oysters, served

here to Leonardo di Caprio, (former) super-

model Eva Herzigova, property billionaire

Thomas Barack, football superstar Cristiano

Ronaldo and others who do not want to read

their names in a magazine. Neither does it

provide the Château Pétrus or the Tignanello

in the wine cellar of La Casitta.

Stephanie and Vincenzo Apuzzo: “Island people everywhere have the

same mentality.”

Simona and Roberto Pierro combine the taste of the world with regional products at the Restaurant La Gritta.

With La Casitta, Marco Fonnesu has realised an

island dream – for him and his guests.

Truffles and sea

Regional is not always enough. Even head

of the La Gritta restaurant, Roberto Pierro,

whose fantastic cuisine creates dishes to

tantalise the tastebuds according to the

Michelin Guide, combines Sardinian sea-

food with summer truffles from Piemont

and a simple sardine with Turkish angel hair

( Kataifi), which he prepares sugar-free, of

course. Robert learned to cook in Piemont

(which explains his love of truffles), worked

as a chef in Spain, Switzerland and the

USA, before he moved to Sardinia and the

restaurant’s kitchen, which belongs to his

wife Simona, who in turn took it over from

her father. They both love Sardinia – an easy

thing to do given the breath-taking view of

the Caribbean-like Mediterranean from the

terrace of La Gritta. The Apulia-born chef

quickly got to grips with Sardinian cuisine

(“there are only a few typical products, meat,

cheese, tomatoes”). And prepares the pasta

typical of Apulia, Orecchiette (“little ears”),

with mature Sardinian ricotta – intra-Italian

fusion cooking if you will.

Open islands

The fact that islands gain in appeal when

they are opened up to the world can be

seen in the Balearics. Nowadays, Palma

de Mallorca is one of the most important

holiday destinations in the world, “because

it offers everything, city, shopping, beach,

sport”, enthuse Thomas Holzleithner and

Hardy Egger, the editors of this magazine

and owners of Lifestylehotels. In the city

with its 400,000 inhabitants, you can mar-

vel at the magnificent Palma Cathedral from

the 16th century, buy souvenirs – for friends,

family and yourself – in international brand

stores and local designer shops, sunbathe

on one of the beautiful sandy beaches or

DAS KRONTHALER, a fascinating Design

& Alpine Lifestyle Hotel on Lake Achen in

Tyrol, spans a very wide range: Optically, it

affords a majestic panoramic view over the

Karwendel and Rofan mountains, over the

picturesque rooftops of the town of Achen-

kirch to the Seekarspitze and the iridescent

Lake Achen. It invites you to hike, ride and

ski. In the hotel complex, the circle of holi-

day joy closes with the best and the most

up-to-date – from the natur[e].spa.BOXX

health and spa centre, to sports events and

seminars, to the hairdressing salon and

boutiques that are included under the name

LustBOXX. Over its 750 square metres, de-

sign meets contemporary character in life-

style accessories and fashion and in ethnic

and traditional dress by the Luis Trenker

brand.

With perfect indoor and outdoor offerings,

it’s no wonder that Günther Hlebaina, the

owner of DAS KRONTHALER, was also

looking for perfect and integrated sound

technology for the music in his rooms. He

found it in the 360 degree “pandoretta°” au-

dio system, manufactured by Graz-based

sound experts, POET Audio. It plays the

music that guests have programmed on

their smartphones wirelessly, without any

cumbersome cables to the loudspeakers.

Currently, there are three “poet-one” sys-

tems in the Kronthaler chalets. The “poet-

one” is the little sister to the “pandoretta°”. It

plays music on each of the three speakers

in a radius of 180 degrees. In the ZeitLOS

989 bar, a “pandoretta°” system with sev-

en loudspeakers and a 360 degree radius

also provides a sophisticated and sonorous

sound experience. As the wireless 360°

flagship, it is also the eye-catcher in the love-

ly ambiance of the bar. At the Kronthaler, the

sales philosophy of POET Audio can also be

experienced in its diversity: Firstly, the direct

contact with customers, secondly, selling

through trade or here through the Lust-

BOXX. “Guests can listen to the sound of

the POET Audio equipment at several points

in our hotel. This is a test run, so to speak,

as we also want to sell this equipment in the

LustBOXX,” says Hlebaina, looking into the

near future. POET is installing one of the

first POET boutiques in the LustBOXX at

the end of June.

In Hallstatt, the World Heritage Site in the

heart of the Salzkammergut, the Hallstatt

Hideaway offers the service of a hotel in

a private atmosphere with its five private

suites. Home away from home – contem-

porary design in historic architecture. The

“pandoretta°” acts as a piece of art – the

platform is made by the Neue Wiener

Werkstaette, a leading manufacturer of

fine furniture – and can be controlled

by a guest’s mobile device without the

need for any settings. “Through the

exceptional sound experience of the

’pandoretta°’, the sensual perception

of the room is broader,” says Silke

Seemann, the owner of the Hideaway,

enthusiastically. The personal music

selection of the guest is combined with

the breath-taking panoramic view of

the lake and the mountains, allowing

guests to experience an emotionally strong

POET Audio concluded a successful

crowdfunding project in mid-June 2016.

(which have between two and 2,000 inhab-

itants) as tax havens – a term which sounds

a bit shady nowadays – but they are also

garden paradises. The racy luxury sports

cars which characterise the streets de-

spite the narrow roads which barely permit

speeds of over 40 mph can be attributed to

the tax havens.

Islands are places of longing, real and liter-

ary. But they are not always paradises. It’s

true that the Count of Monte Christo found

both his treasure and his happiness there in

the novel of the same name by Alexandre

Dumas, just like Jim Hawkins in “Treasure

Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. But they

both then wanted to escape from there.

And managed it too. It’s uncertain whether

anyone managed to flee from Alcatraz, the

prison island in the San Francisco Bay. Clint

Eastwood managed it in the film – perhaps.

A good 50 years after the prison closed,

Alca traz actually became a place of longing

– for over a million visitors a year who enjoy

getting the creeps here.

One of the Maddalena Archipelago islands

upstream of Sardinia was also a type of

prison, but a very comfortable one. Italian

freedom fighter, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who

was one of the most important figures of the

Italian “Risorgimento” unification movement

spent his twilight years here. But he spent

them very luxuriously on an estate, which he

bought along with the island. Thus complet-

ing the circle: Just like Alcatraz, the Garibaldi

House is now a much-visited museum. It is

just a short boat ride from Santa Maria. “Pre-

viously, islands were often a punishment,”

says diving centre owner Vincenzo Apuzzo,

whose father had to serve his military service

on Sardinia, “Today, it is a blessing to be able

to live here.” STOP

take a refreshing dip in the sea, eat in one of

the 18 Michelin-recommended restaurants

and round off your evening in one of the hip

and happening clubs.

Local and international – Svenn Rudow, the

director of the Hotel Tres (see separate arti-

cle) also loves this mix. The Norwegian uses

shrimps from Scandinavia for his Mediterra-

nean Smørrebrød – for one simple reason:

He considers them the best in the world.

But of course, it is served with Spanish

wines, including those which are pressed

on Mallorca.

Islands stand for the extraordinary. On

Lewis and Harris, the main island of the

Outer Hebrides in Scotland, it’s the tweed,

which is only available in its original format

here. Its very own law, the Harris Tweed Act,

and its own authority, the Harris Tweed Au-

thority, guarantee it remains. But you don’t

have to travel to the island to see the quality

of this handwoven sheep’s wool for your-

self, because it is also available at Triennale

del Design in Milan, used by Ermenegildo

Zegna or Margaret Howell.

CLEAR. WILD. FREE. EAST TYROL’S NATURE: POWERFUL & GENTLE.

Almost every therapist subscribes to the

idea that contact with untouched, varied

nature and movement in a beautiful land-

scape are two of the most effective ways

of putting people back on the right track in

body and mind. For East Tyrol, this balanc-

ing, beneficial effect is particularly special,

as it comes with the alleged “shortcom-

ings”, which are in fact its very special

assets: Compared with other Alpine des-

tinations, East Tyrol is fairly limited in size.

How ever, this also means: It is a refuge

for those who are visiting this jewel. And:

East Tyrol is quite fragmented. You won’t

find the massive trail with all the trimmings

heading towards the summit here, with

all-inclusive goings-on. But: There are

lots of separate valleys, summits (name-

ly 266 three-thousanders!), white-water,

mountain villages – every corner hides

a separate little paradise. This makes

East Tyrol incredibly diverse – Whether

ambitious climbers want to take on the

high-Alpine routes with cult status or

stressed-out high achievers need some

gentle downtime to chill out in the slop-

ing but silent nature: East Tyrol has it all.

Even food lovers are well served here in

the truest sense of the word – whether

it’s rustic or refined: East Tyrol has over

200 managed chalets and a good

dozen gourmet restaurants waiting for

you. The cuisine combines the best

from the Alps with the finest from the

neighbouring alpine upland. Whether

on foot, by bike – and by the way: Fans

of both road and all-terrain will find the

perfect routes here – whether on wa-

ter or into the ice-covered mountains

(a top tip is the Obstans ice cave):

Between the Lienz Dolomites and

the Carnic Alps in the south and the

Hohe Tauern National Park in the

north, you can find it all.

Challenges & more

If you fancy a festive experience of a dif-

ferent kind, then you’ll love one of these

events: In August, the Free Solo Masters

takes place in Lienz (14th–15th). The East

Tyrolean extreme mountain climber Peter

Ortner (Cerro Torre ascent with David

Lama) developed the FREE SOLO climbing

wall: 9 modules, each 2 metres high and 3

metres wide, are hoisted and held like an

accordion by a crane. The incline of the

wall and the resulting difficulty of the climb-

ing routes can be varied in any way. At the

Free Solo Masters, climbers try to climb

a wall without rope protection and assis-

tance. There is then only one way down:

Free fall. But in a giant airbag. On 16th July,

vintage tractors meet in Kals and from 22nd

to 24th July, the VW Bullis will show they’re

not afraid of Austria’s highest mountain at

the 11th Großglockner VW Bulli meet up.

Then it becomes extreme from 22nd to

24th July on the Großglockner Ultra Trail

in Kals: The course (110 km!) runs main-

ly into the high-Alpine terrain, sometimes

over 2800 metres high. Every participant

must be extremely fit and sure-footed to

master the trail by the book. Extensive ex-

perience in long-distance mountain com-

petitions is a prerequisite for taking part.

It will be less steep, but very very skewed

and funny at the OLALA street theatre fes-

tival in Lienz (26th–30th July 2016): Under

the title “BENEJUX”, Belgian absurdities

and Dutch madness will provide a whole

heap of surprises and fun. Shows of be-

tween eight seconds and ten minutes can

be attended in mini-theatres either on your

own or in small groups ... all attractions

are interactive and you only need to bring

yourself. At the beginning of September

(10th September), it’s down to the nitty

gritty with extreme sport at the Red Bull

Dolomiten mann relay race in Lienz. The

motto “When suffering is fun” is to be taken

seriously here. 103 teams from 16 nations

will set out to run, paddle, paraglide or cy-

cle as hard as their body and equipment

can handle – or not ... STOP

Morning Glory and Hill Bill

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Sim-

ply jump on a bike and cycle away. At the

Bikepark Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, you’ll find

your path no matter how long you’ve been

riding: From the “Morning Glory” for begin-

ners to “Hill Bill”, which carries you over

carpets of roots, surprising you with dar-

ing drops – pure thrills, even for seasoned

bikers. Nature has created the best con-

ditions here for the ultimate bike experi-

ence. And where it has left gaps in the

adventure, the Bikepark has answered

the call and created North Shore trails

following good old Canadian tradition,

with ingenious wooden constructions,

which will get the adrenalin pumping

through your veins as you conquer

them. You give your all, take the jumps

fearlessly and beat your personal

bests ... until exhaustion leads you

to your four-poster bed or to the Sky

Relax zone of your hotel, alpslodge.

And what does the Life.Style.Bar here

have to offer?

2.

30 big ones stare back at you

3,203 metres above sea level: The

joy of the summit, a view over the

landscape and the endless energy

of the high alpine world. On the

Kitzsteinhorn, great latitude is wait-

ing, accessible even to you, even if

you only run or cycle a little in your

everyday life. The secret behind it?

You only need your strength from

the top station of the glacier cable

car. For the last 200 metres of the

climb. Secured by a rope, guided

by qualified mountain guides, you

can taste the adventure without

ifs or buts. The incredible pano-

rama awaits you at the summit:

You look out into the vastness – and 30

gigantic mountains stare back at you. The

mountain calls and it means you! Thirsty?

Do you want a taste of something fresh, with

high-alpine ice? At your hotel, the Lederer´s

Living design hotel in the heart of Kaprun,

the best place to start the ultimate summit

tour, they know exactly what you need.

3.

Full concentration on the apple

Did William Tell hit the apple on his son’s

head? Would you hit it or would you pre-

fer to practice archery some more? The

bowstring is tight, and the universe seems

to hold its breath for a moment, before the

arrow is unleased ... mankind domesticat-

ed the bow 14,000 years ago; and now you

want to, too. To do it with ease. You should:

Under the guidance of the experts of Wild-

kogel Outdoor Life, with their professional

equipment – whether you’re big or small,

left-handed or right.

When you lower the bow after hitting the

target, your spirit lingers in a state of order.

Concentrated. Focussed. You’re overcome

by a hankering for the taste of that sum-

mery, sour apple on the head of the young

boy. You return to the Wildkogel Resort in

Bramberg. You look for the magical apple

tree between the chalets and find yourself,

as if guided by an invisible hand, directly at

the bar ...

4.

Barefoot in the waves

You’ve never been so close to the element

– speed across the water barefoot and be

carried along by the exhilaration of speed

... or perhaps you prefer one or two boards

in-between, on a monoski or two? The

Wolfgangsee lake offers you a way to en-

counter the water in an unforgettable way.

Roland Ballner, manager of the Cortisen

am See hotel, teaches you what you want

to know, steers you, guides you and praises

you if you want to challenge yourself. Close

to the waves, you sense yourself and your

unimagined strength – through the slalom

buoy course or simply tour the expanse of

the lake. “Water”, you think and smile, while

you enter the picturesque Cortisen boutique

hotel, a colonial style country house. You

reach for the glass ...

5.

Give me five

Are you dreaming of the XXL Freeride Tour?

Get up on the saddle of your enduro bike

and off you go! From the Thomsn-Rock.

Hotel in Hinterglemm, you are just five min-

utes from fulfilling your dream. You and your

bike are poised at the starting point of the

BIG-5-BIKE challenge, where the Reiter-

kogel, Schattberg, Kohlmais, Zwölferkogel

and Asitz mountains await you, urging you

to conquer them. In front of you are 60 kilo-

metres of incomparable trails and imposing

views. On the way up, you’ll mobilise all your

energy – on the descent, it’s fast, but with a

relieved whoop. It is true, even if you can’t

yet believe it – you were there! Take a look at

www.big-5.at. There are snapshot stations

at some of the 13 checkpoints, which keep

you on course, where you can document

your extreme trip as you pass by. Then you

can get the complete opposite – ultimate

peace – at your home base, the Thomsn-

Rock.Hotel.

6.

The Drachenwand before your eyes

You get a waft of the scent of the freshly

trimmed greens from the first tee at the foot

of the Drachenwand. But the only monster to

conquer in your vicinity is the golfer within you

with his penchant for precision, if not perfec-

tion. You think about the par of the hole lying

in front of you. A hole-in-one, that’s the aim ...

just don’t hit it a dud ... and you drive off.

The 19th hole is not what entices you after

your game. It’s your luxurious hideaway, the

Iris Porsche Hotel next to the Mondsee lake.

It takes no more than 30 minutes to reach

15 golf courses from here – the right course

to suit your golfing passion is out there. Your

need for green is not even sated in the evening

and you long for the first gulp ... sparkling, ex-

otic, with a touch of kiwi ...

7.

The Steinbock in your sights

Beneath you – your bike. In front of you –

nothing but nature, air, freedom ... and the

alluring challenge of climbing to the Stein-

bockalm cabin under your own steam. Fully

Float and glide over the water

In keeping with your wishes and objectives,

in tune with your body? When you try out

stand-up paddle boarding on Lake Achen,

you are testing yourself and your balance.

Floating like an ice cube on the water, you

move almost silently over Lake Achen. The

board, which is now your entire world, mea-

sures almost three and a half metres and

holds you on the surface. Using the carbon

paddle, you are immersed in the water of the

mountain lake and the feeling of total relax-

your paddle with smooth elegance; the

paddle blade creates delicate air bubbles in

the lake with every stroke. For a moment,

you think about soda water, about spar-

delicate tingles on your tongue. Then you

hear your guide, Walter Kern from the DAS

is talking about the indescribable feeling

when you’re stand-up paddling. You’ve got

to give it to him …

And above, the sun floats by.

The day starts drawing to a close – and you

still have adventure in your blood? Then

the mountain calls out to you again – and

this time, it’s the Kanisfluh massif. Majesti-

cally, it sits enthroned above the Bregenz

Forest and, with its bare rock faces, it

seems forbidding to those who want to

scale it. But you are staying at the Sonne

Palma: Pulsating living in a city, which has

been populated for more than two thou-

sand years. The Hotel Tres is located in the

heart of the old town, near Paseo Marítimo,

the fashionable seaside promenade, and

the famous fish market. Connected har-

moniously by a glass stairway, the remains

of a 16th century town mansion merge here

with a 1950s building. “A little treasure, hid-

den in the heart of the old town,” enthuses

a guest.

Whether you want a single room with a

view of the cathedral or a suite with its own

jacuzzi and roof terrace; every traveller will

find their perfect sanctuary here from the

seven room types. Cool white has been

combined with natural shades, the lit-

tle mosaic tables and fleece-covered

benches provide splashes of colour, in

front of the typical rolling over-bed tables

that complete every room at the Tres.

Breakfast in bed, while browsing through

travel guides without them disappearing

The charming city hotel is made of two neigh-

bouring houses – the villa and the hotel. De-

veloped in around 1900, modernised over

decades with as much love as style, the

Auersperg’s appeal comes not only from

the 55 tastefully decorated rooms & suites in

their stylistic mix of classic to modern. It also

appeals with its beautiful paradise of an ur-

ban garden and its exclusive city spa on the

rooftop with sauna, steam room, yoga and

massages. The sun terrace with its fantastic

view at the Kapuzinerberg hill also offers pure

relaxation.

Bettina and Mark Wiesinger focus on all as-

pects of quality, authenticity and comfort in

their hotel – now in its 3rd generation: Oiled

wooden floors (some more than 100-year-

old originals), customised carpentry from

regional craftspeople, natural leather, linen,

the bathrooms in Rauriser marble and the

Smørrebrød under the palms

When you return from a long day of strolling,

shopping or swimming, you’ll be immersed

in an atmosphere of peace at the Hotel Tres

– both in your room with king-sized bed and

on the newly designed Mallorquin patio, a

green oasis in the shade of a palm tree that

is more than 100 years old. Shielded from

the hustle and bustle outside the hotel,

guests experience an almost private island

of peace here.

Svenn Rudow, the hotel’s manager is the

reason that, of all things, you can snack on

a Scandinavian Smørrebrød – rye bread

job and the inhospitable weather of Norway

for Mallorca, “It was actually only meant to

be a sabbatical year. I’ve been here twelve

years now.” Rudow’s Scandinavian touch

characterises the hotel – in culinary terms

too.

It is not just the patio that is a popular meet-

ing point for hotel guests. At a lofty height,

pure pleasure awaits you on the roof-top

terraces: The view is breath-taking, whether

you look towards the sea, the cathedral or

the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range

in the north-west of the city. If you’re look-

ing for refreshment after a hot day, you can

find it in the roof-top terrace pool or in a cool

drink. If you want to turn up the heat, then

you can take a sauna. The day is rounded

off on a sunbed under the starry sky. STOP

Whether it’s Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck,

Palma, Paris or London: Cities are exciting

experiences that might also wear you out a

little. In the Middle Ages, the German say-

ing declared “Urban air makes you free” but

nowhere is it written that it will also provide

relaxation and city travellers don’t expect

that either.

But there are oases of peace in cities as

well; hotels that are retreats, which invite you

to relax, in which the city becomes quiet, all

but remaining on the outside. The Hollmann

Beletage in Vienna, the Hotel Tres in Palma

de Mallorca and the Hotel & Villa Auersperg

in Salzburg (see text on this double page)

are hotels like this. You know exactly which

city you’re in, because these hotels match

their city. Because they are the city in its

most beautiful form. But at the same time,

you can forget it as well. Because the hustle

and bustle of the cities disappears in the

ambiance of these hotels.

Of course, you can find hotels like these

elsewhere too. For example, there’s the

ful design classics – a passion of host Mark.

Service is also top-quality – both generally

and specifically: Families who are travelling

with small children can send a baby and

child service list in advance – and all the im-

portant things will be ready when they check

in. While parents enjoy the highlights of the

festival city, a babysitter will lull their little

ones to sleep. Those who love socialising will

make extensive use of the elegant lounge to

chill out. In the A* Bar – which is also open all

through the day – there are delicious, toast-

ed sandwiches, homemade soups, Austrian

delicacies and homemade cakes – between

7:00 and 24:00, the majority of which are

organic. This also applies to the “most im-

portant” meal of the day: “Our breakfast is

organic, from regional companies which use

sustainable production methods as a matter

of conviction and – just like us – only offer

the absolute best quality!”, says host Bettina

Wiesinger, describing the culinary part of the

hotel’s philosophy. In the warm season, it’s

best to enjoy it in the garden – a blossom-

ing island shielded from the hectic hustle

and bustle of the city, lovingly and expertly

planted and designed: A little paradise. In

the heart of Salzburg. STOP

Here, guests are welcomed by 26 newly

renovated rooms, considerably larger than

the average in Vienna, and exceptionally

friendly and helpful staff. You quickly feel at

home, the Beletage radiates an extremely

pleasant warmth with its primary colours –

dark brown and orange. The high- quality

wood furniture and top-quality leather are

harmoniously and liberally distributed. Very

original surprising effects, such as the

bathroom in the wardrobe, await you in the

rooms. Instead of flourishes or pictures, tiny

details, clear lines and an airy atmosphere

captivate here.

Finally, guests return full of wonderful im-

pressions of their tours of Vienna and enjoy

it when they can then rest and chatter in a

completely relaxed fashion.

There are also cosy retreats, like the sauna

and the idyllic courtyard terrace. In the

mornings, there is a very extensive break-

fast, which is chocolatey and cinammony in

the winter and surprises with lime tart in the

summer, served at the table or in bed – until

Because, what is the greatest happiness

on earth? Wealth? Love? Power? Health?

Or the island? Happiness is fleeting like a

prison escapee, volatile like a con artist and

as predictable as an earthquake. In Vienna,

they say that happiness is a bird, but one

which does not stay long in the same nest,

sitting on fragile eggs and dying as soon as

you trap it in a cage. For some, the greatest

happiness is a warm apple pie, or a wide-

tyred sports car and for others, it’s a cosy

get-together. But what do all the mega-rich

do, those whose every pore flows with mon-

ey? People, who have more than the gross

national product of an emerging nation? Do

they buy themselves a football club, a Lear

jet with airport and then a yacht the size of

a skyscraper as well? No, the really rich buy

themselves an island.

Islands, if you’re not Napoleon, the Count

of Monte Christo, Odysseus or Robinson

Crusoe, are the greatest happiness, aspi-

ration, paradise. Private places, not easily

accessible and gently lapped by water – or

tossed about by the storm.

WHAT WOULD YOU THINK IF I GAVE YOU AN ISLAND RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW? WOULD YOU LIKE IT? AN ISLAND

JUST FOR YOU? NO, IT’S NO JOKE, AND IT’S NOT AN ISLAND SOMEWHERE ELSE, ON A PLANET LIGHT YEARS

AWAY. PROMISE.

Islands have no everyday routine. You are

distanced from the normal routine of the

system and that brings people together.

Like on mountain peaks, you quickly be-

come friends on an island. My last islands

were Zakynthos, the Ile de Aix, Iceland, Sylt,

Heligo land, Ponza, Goree, Brac , Waiheke

Island, the museum island of Oslo and a

number of others. There was always this

blessed feeling inside of being detached, lib-

erated and yet protected. On the Ile de Aix,

there are wonderful oysters, on Zakynthos

tor toises, admittedly only to look at, and on

Ponza, outstanding fish. And every island is

a little bit different and a little bit peculiar.

If you believe in evolution, we all come from the

water, developing from single-cell organisms

and ancient fish. Perhaps this is why we love

islands, because the sea (or a lake) reminds us

of an archaic primitive state. Of amniotic fluid?

Well, not everyone can bear the contemplative

island life, some need the acoustic hullabaloo

or need to demonstrate that they’ve cut the

cord with water, by challenging the sun to a

duel and frying until they pop like sausages.

THE LAST ISLANDPardon? Am I getting side-tracked? Don’t

worry, I haven’t forgotten your island.

You’ve had it for a long time already. No, not

some island in the Caribbean, populated

by meerkats, made of floating trees. And

not some island of plastic refuge in the Pa-

cific. It’s much closer than that. Invaluable

and also not for sale. If you find repose,

are at one with yourself, have craggy cliffs

and soft sand dunes, then you yourself

are an island – just like everyone. And

this island, which you yourself are, this

heavenly island – I want to give it to you.

Discover yourself. STOP

ISLAND OF TWO FACES

“Hiddensee has given me a gift in old age,

new and young, and its magic rejuvenates

me every time, my feet touch its beloved

soil.” This is what writer Gerhart Hauptmann

once had to say about his summer residence,

the island on which he is now buried. The

fountain of youth that became the land of the

great poet is a tourist magnet with a long tra-

dition, which has managed, nevertheless, not

to descend into mass tourism. Descended

upon by artists in the early 20th century, loved

and shaped by them; a very natural holiday

region, extremely popular among artists

and intellectuals in the GDR era and fully in-

tegrated into a national park shortly before

the reunification. One of the last resolutions

of the GDR government was to set up the

Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National

Park. This means there is no chance for chain

hotels, miles of restaurants and fun parks on

Hidden see in the future. This has retained the

charm of the island, where you can shake off

the stress of everyday life and rediscover a

long-forgotten sense of time.

Slowing down

One of the keys to slowing down everyday life

on Hiddensee is the fact that the island is car-

free. The 18 square kilometres can easily be

/ HIDDENSEE /

THE SWEET LITTLE ISLAND, WEST OF ITS LARGER SISTER ISLAND OF

RÜGEN IN THE BALTIC SEA, IS CUTE AND SMALL, BUT HARSH AND

DRAMATIC IN ITS DIVERSITY. AN ISLAND OF CONTRASTS.

explored by bike, on foot, or by horse-drawn

carriage. If you really need an engine, then

you can take the island bus. And yet, you can

reach the mainland very quickly by helicopter

in an emergency. It’s just … without an emer-

gency, there’s no urgency.

The island is so manageable that you can

hike through the woody highland of the Dorn-

busch region to the lighthouse in one day,

then lay in the sand on the west beach and

still cross the purple flowers of the heather.

And in-between, you can enjoy refreshments

at the Klausner in the Dornbusch region or

at one of the Vitte guesthouses. Make sure

it’s something with sea buckthorn, which is a

common vegetation in this region.

Away from the main tracks through the

island’s villages, you really do travel alone.

About 1,300 people live year-round on the

island – hundreds more arrive every day on

the tourist boats. They surge through the

cultural centre in the north, the little par-

ish of Kloster, which has everything but the

monastery, after which it was named. This

was destroyed back during the Thirty Years’

War. Today, most make a pilgrimage to the

Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus.

For 150 years, Hiddensee has been a re-

fuge to artists, some – like Hauptmann – built

their own houses here: The Danish actress

Asta Nielsen built her famous semi-round

“Karusel”, which houses exhibitions today,

and painter Oskar Kruse had his summer

residence, the Lietzenburg Art Nouveau

villa. Next to these splendid buildings, the

thatched-roof houses of the locals are in-

deed also picturesque, but look very differ-

ent and somewhat humble. In the southern-

most locality of the island, Neuendorf, the

buildings are actually all landmarked.

Island in motion

Vitte is at the heart ... the largest locality

with 600 inhabitants is the headquarters

of the island’s administration, the island’s

cinema, the sea stage and is also a har-

bour town, like Kloster and Neuendorf.

Talking of harbours: Hiddensee also has

two faces for seafarers. All three harbours

are on the bodden – the eastern side of

the island, where the water laps quietly

away and the waterways have to be con-

stantly dredged so that they don’t silt up

and make the island inaccessible. In the

west and the north, on the other hand,

the Baltic Sea surges – in the north, so

powerfully that some of the beaches

have to be protected with stone walls.

In his multi-award winning debut novel

“Kruso”, Lutz Seiler portrays the island of

Hiddensee at the time of reunification from

the perspective of the seasonal workers

(known as Esskaa here). Professors of phi-

losophy and doctors of sociology wait ta-

bles here, having arrived on the island for

various reasons. In Kruso, “those who are

here have left the country without crossing

the border.”

The two heroes of the summer and autumn

of 1989: Alexander Krusowitsch, known as

Kruso, and his partner-in-crime for the sea-

son, Ed(gar) Bendler, both pot washers at

the famous Zum Klausner guesthouse in

the Dornbusch region. Kruso organises a

parallel society through the network of sea-

sonal workers away from the tourist world, in

which he supplies the numerous illegal GDR

escapees with secret places to sleep and

soup, using alcohol and persuasion to try

and convince them against their intentions.

Not as part of the system, but quite the con-

trary. For him who lost his precious sister

to the Baltic Sea, it’s about rescuing the

stranded from drowning. Possibly. Because

in time, he is enraptured more and more.

Ed Bendler, student of German studies, is

The famous lighthouse in the Dornbusch region – seen

from Bodden.

The water still breaks away parts of the island

– mostly in the area of the “Toter Kerl” – and

deposits them elsewhere. In this way, the

Neubessin tongue of land grows by several

metres per year and the southernmost part of

the island, the Gellen Peninsula, also extends.

What are developed here are bare sandy ar-

eas, reserved solely for the seabirds: Cranes,

geese, ducks and the odd little tern. Clearly,

with ambition, the part of the island that is ac-

cessible to people can be explored in a single

day. But only if we’re not talking about the ac-

tual essence of the island. Because there is

nothing else like it when the last tourist boat

has left the island and only those who really

love Hiddensee are left. STOP

only focussed on survival in the moment,

later inspired by Kruso. A close friendship

develops between the two of them – not

just because of their shared experience of

loss. One of the things that unites them is

a love of poetry. When the borders open,

their colleagues leave Klausner and a

life-threatening flight over Hiddensee to

the nearest Danish island Møn becomes

pointless, the two men stay and try to

hold the fort. Until their battle for life or

death.

The novel is rooted in historical facts –

however, its branches extend into sur-

real worlds. Almost obsessed with details

– even unsavoury ones – Lutz Seiler paints

a portrait of the island of Hiddensee and a

missing society. He actually experienced the

life of an “Esskaa” himself – as a pot washer

in Klausner, in the summer of 1989. STOP

Giant trees were moved, exotic plants

aligned, bungalows built and fantastic

sculptures as landscape citations placed

in between. In front of the gates of Mar-

rakesh, there is a free shuttle bus, which

runs directly into the garden paradise of

Andre Heller in the nearby Ourika Valley.

Four times a day, the bus takes visitors

from the Parking de la Koutoubia carpark

behind the mosque of the same name

to Anima. Viennese architect Carmen

Widerin also designed the living space as

a series of colourful bungalows, located

in the heart of the splendid garden. Heller

invested about 10 million Euros in the de-

sign of the garden, which was previously

a bare desert. Iron cages had to be built,

to move the 100-year old cacti. During a

tour, guests encounter a Noah’s Ark called

Hope, an extra-terrestrial sculpture guest,

a stele of Keith Haring as well as the men-

tioned cacti, heads from Cameroon, a lily

pond, the gate of hands to the Islamic gar-

den and much more.

Art and nature in Hombroich

In actual fact, Hombroich is known for

something quite different. Namely, its mis-

sile base. But since the 1980s, the Museum

Insel Neuss-Holzheim has been managed

by a joint foundation. The magnificently re-

natured parks and meadows on the North-

ern bank of the Erft, where free-stand-

ing exhibition pavilions can be found, are

down to Karl-Heinrich Müller, the Düssel-

dorf-based art collector. He acquired the

island in 1982 and started to realise his

concept with visual artists. Over the years,

an extensive art collection has developed,

with pieces by Hans Arp, Alexander Calder,

Paul Cézanne, Eduardo Chillida, Lovis

Corinth, Jean Fautrier, Alberto Giacometti,

Yves Klein, Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse,

Francis Picabia, Rembrandt van Rijn, Kurt

Schwitters, art of the Khmer and artwork

from ancient China. The “Haus für Musiker”

was completed in 2014 following the plans

of Austrian architect Raimund Abraham.

The museum has the motto of “Art Parallel

to Nature” referring to Paul Cézanne.

Monet, Jackson Pollock and Tadao

Ando on Naoshima

Who doesn’t know the pumpkin sculpture

by Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama? The only

thing that is not widely known is its location,

as it has since become the emblem of the

Japanese island of Naoshima. Star architect

Tadao Ando built a real temple of art here. In

actual fact, the entire island is studded with

objets d’art. At the end of the 1980s, me-

dia mogul Soichiro Fukutake needed more

room for his collection of modern art. And the

Benesse Corporation publishing house want-

ed to make a mecca of art from Naoshima,

an island south of the Honshu region. In the

open air, sculptures and installations were

created, together with the two art museums

Chichu and the Benesse Art House in 1992, in

which the extensive collection is housed with

pieces by David Hockney, Jackson Pollock,

Yves Klein and Jasper Johns together with

a hotel. In the largely underground building

of the Chichu museum by Tadao Ando, the

walk-through neon “Open Space” installation

by James Turrell and Walter de Maria casts a

spell. A couple of the “Water Lilies” oil paint-

ings by Claude Monet can also be seen here.

And Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture “Diego

sur stele 1” welcomes guests to the reception

of the Benesse House.

5. VIENNA

Viennese fashion in the

Bisovsky Salon

Susanne Bisovsky’s fashion line “Wiener

Chic” has been a secret tip for many years.

The busy fashion designer has specialised

in folkloristic themes, which she implements

in a contemporary fashion. Fashion icons

such as Iris Apfel, Suzy Menkes and Peggy

Siegal are now among her fans. The focus

is on the Viennese girl and costumes from

the melting pot of a wide range of nations

and cultures, which have gathered in Vienna

over the centuries. And because Bisovsky is

thoroughly creative, her salon in the seventh

district is also a total work of art. Over the

years, she has beautifully arranged every-

thing she has collected and fitted it into her

concept: Tin cans with flowers, porcelain

dancers, lace of all kinds and of course, lots

of vintage furniture. Her “The Electromag-

netic House of Three Viennese Girls” instal-

lation could be seen on the Swarovski stage

of the Swarovski Wien store until mid-June.

James Bond architecture in Lanzarote

A pool that looks like it came from a Bond

film, futuristic sculptures on the roundabout

and architecture from the 1970s. Thanks to

an initiative by architect César Manrique, the

island has been in pristine condition since

the 1960s. In keeping with the look, even

some of the road markings are missing –

site preservation is really taken seriously.

The Spanish painter, architect, sculptor

and conservationist Manrique decided to

convert his home island into one of the

most beautiful places in the world after his

art degree in New York in 1964. Only the

traditional architecture of Lanzarote was

to be allowed. In 1968, the government

even issued a ban on billboards. Later,

Manrique discovered five lava caves when

building his house, which were converted

into living spaces. In 1974, the El Almacén

multi-purpose cultural centre in Arrecife

was opened as an international meeting

point for art lovers. The Fundación César

Manrique is now housed in the home of

the artist.

Island of the future on Pingtan

They built the famous Ordos Museum

in Mongolia and are in the running for

the George Lucas Museum in Chicago.

But one project by Chinese-American

architects MAD ranks foremost. In

Pingtan, an entire island is to be cre-

ated, which will be adorned with art

from all over the world. The Pingtan

Art Museum is to be China’s largest

private museum, aiming to strengthen

the cultural connection between the

island and the mainland. The bridge

alone, which is to connect the artifi-

cial island to the mainland, is to be

over 5 kilometres long. Over 1,000 objets

d’art will be permanently on display over

approximately 40,000 square metres. The

museum itself has been under construction

since this year and will be built from a mate-

rial mixture of sand and shells – eco-friendly

and historically aware. Because the island

was previously a solitary little fishing island.

Perhaps this is why it looks so much like a

ray.

Paris in Venice

What makes a Parisian observatory in

Venice? The Louis Vuitton Foundation is

showing the “Building in Paris” exhibition

by architect Frank Gehry and artist Daniel

Buren, in the Espace Louis Vuitton in Ven-

ice. Until the end of November, architecture

afficionados will be able to see the 3D mod-

els and drawings of the project by Gehry in

the exhibition space, which has previously

attracted over a million visitors to Paris. Part

of the exhibition was designed by Buren,

who designed a special installation espe-

cially for it, which includes the glass roof of

the Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia and con-

glass canopies. The exhibition runs along-

Page 15: THE STYLEMATE 02/2016 Islands of desire

The soft, gentle light generated by WIRO and RAY helps to create the right mood. Do you want a cheery morning at 3000 K,

or a 1800 K candle-like light? Either way, we have it covered in less than a second. The secret? The combination of a trendsetting design and an innovative LED technology

provides an especially warm colour temperature - whether at the city’s hottest bars and restaurants or in your private home.

The LED luminaries of Wever & Ducré set the right light for a cosy atmosphere. Keep shining.
