Time fl ies when you’re having fun, which is probably why you, like me, are sat here wondering where on earth

the summer has vanished to? Looking back at the past few months we can begin to comprehend why this is. London erupted in euphoria for weeks of Olympic and Paralympic Games, bringing the nation together in times of otherwise economic doom and gloom. Countless festivals dotted around this tiny island of ours made noises which could be heard across the pond. The Queen emphatically celebrated her Diamond Jubilee whilst Prince Harry showed the world his crown jewels and now, here we are, with another academic year ahead of us.

For many of you, this means the start of a brand new and exciting chapter in the book of life. Maybe you are making the bold leap into university, or approaching the end of your educational career, either way, whichever stage you are at, we are here to guide you through. NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS 2012 - BBCThis cult music programme come quiz is an icon of British television. Since its birth in the nineties, the show has continued to be a popular hit on the BBC, mixing

scathing sarcastic comedy with the beautiful world of music. The show has seen it all from controversial guests, infamous walk-outs and for the past few series, no permanent host, adding an extra spice to each broadcast.

Famous Walkout: Cheeky chappy Simon Amstell, the host of series 19-22, took Ordinary Boy’s frontman Preston to breaking point in 2007, after mocking his then wife’s autobiography. Preston threw a bit of a strop, walked out, with a lookalike member of the audience replacing him.

Rumour Has It: His wife was in fact backstage having issues with their dog and called for help!

What a night! The three words which instantly spring to mind when looking back at what truly was ‘The Ultimate House Party’. After many months of planning and many weeks of waiting, the special night fi nally took place this summer, which for one person in particular, was a night that will never be forgotten. Ed Sheeran, double Brit Award winner, with a platinum selling debut album, countless singles in the charts and an overall popularity which can’t be put into words, made the dreams of one north London student come true this May; performing an exclusive secret garden set in the presence of her closest friends and family.

It may well be the case that you had already heard of this amazing prize we at The Student Pocket Guide were giving away. Way back in the summer of 2011, just before the meteoric rise of Ed Sheeran had begun, we were lucky enough to catch up with him on his UK tour to arrange a competition that couldn’t be matched: a one off house gig, with provided drinks and cleaners the next day. What followed was a infl ux of interest and popularity with what was on off er. The eyes of the nation’s newspapers were caught, the voices of blogs and websites were heard and competition entries soon tipped the hundreds and then thousands, out

of which, one person would be chosen, for one very special night. Hannah Goodwin, 21 years old of Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, was this lucky person who played host to this once in a lifetime occasion. Here is how it went!

Simply put, it couldn’t have gone any better. Great people, great setting and of course, an unforgettable performance by Ed Sheeran. The months of hard work came to fruition with everything coming together perfectly; even the sun came out to catch a glimpse of the nation’s favourite red head!

Many of Hannah’s friends had no idea what was going on when we fi rst showed up at her house. “Why are there cameras here?”, a few of them whispered to each other. And when Ed casually walked through the front door, then out into the garden, you can imagine the utter shock splattered on their faces! After mingling with the crowd and greeting Hannah and her family, Ed exchanged a few words with us sat on a bench at the back of the garden, in front of an eagerly listening crowd. “You know what?”, he begins, “I’ve done so many back garden gigs. It was actually how I used to make a living; going around student houses with a bag of CDs making £100 a time.”

We went on to discuss his recent time spent in America on tour with Snow Patrol; a tour which he unfortunately had to cut short by a few shows in May. That aside, Ed went on to explain how things over there have compared to his journey in the UK. “It’s very similar to how things were last May in Britain. We’ve started creating a small buzz over there, so hopefully it builds.” His focus since has shifted back to the UK, having played a series of shows and festivals. Many of you Ed Sheeran fans I am sure would have seen his brilliant performance at BBC Radio One’s Hackney Weekend on TV, or, if you were lucky enough - at the show, which was a highlight it seems for so many artists this summer. There is always one venue

or festival, however, that is a particular favourite that lives long in the memory for many artists. For Ed, this was Reading 2011. “It was mental. I played the Festival Republic tent and it was so good. Very, very fun!”

As the conversation went on, we spoke about Ed’s love of cucumber (randomly), future records he’s been working on and Lego building amongst a host of other things, including the possibility of a headline arena tour. “Arenas are diffi cult to do because you have to hold a crowd for one and

a half to two hours; and I don’t have a band so I’d be doing it on my own. As soon as I have enough songs to be able to do a good set, I’ll play an arena tour!” One thing we didn’t have to wait to see was his latest tattoo! As he showed us and everyone there, he explained the story behind his latest addition. “I grew up next to a cafe called ‘The Dancing Goat’, which my best friends own. I walked to school with them every day for like seven years, so I thought I’d get a goat!” We spoke a little more then closed the interview to a rapturous applause, which signifi ed the moment that everyone had been waiting for, Ed’s intimate set.

The garden was lit with outdoor lamps and candles, which coupled with the sunset, just as the gig was in full fl ow, created a perfect serene atmosphere. Out came the classics of ‘Lego House’, ‘The A Team’,

The “My my, my my” of ‘Give Me Love’ resonated around the garden, with everyone smiling as they repeated Ed’s famous lyrics. You could sense everyone there trying to capture the moment; realising that this really was a once in a lifetime occasion.

Then came the highlight of the night. ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’, which even for Ed, was something special. As Ed began the second single from his debut album ‘+’, in the corner of his eye to his amazement, was Hannah’s brother, Niall, rapping and singing every word. Even the camera crew had to remove their headphones to believe what they were hearing! The rest of the song soon became a word-for-word duet, with both guys going at it full fl ow, rapping lyrics, “I’m always doing shows if I’m not I’m in

the studio; truly broke, never growing up call me Rufi o; melody music maker, reading all the papers;

they say I’m up-and-coming like I’m... (You know the rest!)”,

which received the biggest cheer of the night.

It was the perfect end to a mesmerising set. The fi nal chord was met with a great cheer, and as Ed stepped down from the top of the garden, he left a crowd ecstatic from what they had just experienced. “I’m kinda lost for words. I can’t

describe how happy I am!”, Hannah told

us afterwards. Her brother, Niall, was also left a little shell shocked. “I don’t realise what I’ve just done, I’ve just sung with a guy

two Brit Awards! Amazing”, he told us with a look of disbelief at what just happened. Everyone congregated in the garden with drinks and food, still buzzing about with a childish excitement. Photos were taken with Ed; CDs, arms, legs and shoes were signed, and all attending had their fi nal chance to have a few words with the man of the moment, rounding off an unforgettable night.

Seeing an artist of Ed’s calibre in an environment of such intimacy was a real privilege. It was an experience that we will never forget and one that we are truly thankful for. And do you know what the great thing is? You can watch the nights events unfold on our website

Uni is a lot of fun. It’s an experience which will last long in the memory, safely fi led away under the category - ‘Times of my life’. For many young people, it’s also stage one of adulthood; the fi rst move from dependence to independence. To make sure you get the most out of this new chapter in your life, we have provided some ‘basics’ to help you not only stay alive but thrive at uni… and come out the other side with a degree and the good times behind you!

You’ve got to make friends. New ones. However shy you are or excruciating you fi nd this, it has to be done - end of!

So, get yourself to Fresher’s Week, gatherings and events. Force yourself to speak to the people around you. If you fi nd this diffi cult, fall back on common courtesy: names; background; studies etc. After all, everyone is in the same boat. It won’t be long before you meet that friend for life!

Unless you’re teetotal, you’ll be drinking. As much as we don’t want you to be a party-pooper, make sure that when you’re out and about you are with a group of people you can trust. There’s no harm in making the eff ort to feel safe and you’ll have a much better night knowing that someone is looking out for you.

Overdoing it on the drinking front, however, can cause you serious harm. Here’s how to ‘soften the blow’:

- Drink plenty of water. Even if you’ve only had a few, make sure that you drink some water before you sleep. Being dehydrated isn’t good for your body, especially your head!

- Eat before you start! A sandwich, bowl of pasta, chips – food will help.

- If you’re sick from drinking, be glad. See it as your body giving you a helping hand! After all, alcohol is a toxin. If a friend is looking like they’re about to hurl, make sure they’re not alone. You don’t have to share the experience – you can be holding your nose with a hand on their back! Just be there.

Remember - You’ll always feel better after you’ve been sick!

Having a healthy and balanced diet is essential to feeling good!

As we all know, money isn’t exactly pouring out of your pockets when you’re a student! That’s not to say you can’t eat well. Stock up on carbohydrates like pasta, rice and potatoes. Cheap, cheerful, and also halfway there to a meal!

Top tip: Do your food shop later on in the evening and look out for ‘reduced’ labels. You can be sure to fi nd yourself a bargain or two!

Drugs can kill, make no mistake.

It’s a very risky path to choose which can not only ruin your chances of getting a decent degree but also your physical and mental health.

At university, you are very much your own person. This of course is a good thing, however, you must remember that you alone are responsible for your actions. If someone

off ers you drugs, make life easier for yourself and say no. You know it’s the right thing to do. If you have a friend who’s taking drugs, stay close. You never know when they might need you. If they or anyone else is in trouble – get them to hospital, quickly. An early emergency phone call to the ambulance service could save a life.

Even if you’ve tried drugs once, it doesn’t mean you have to again. Stopping is admirable. And clever.

University if often very hectic so make sure you fi nd the time to chill! It’s not wasting time or being lazy; it’s something for you to enjoy. Taking time out is key to staying on top things, especially your studies. You can’t be fl at out, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to making the most out of the following day.

Prolonged punishment of your body through lack of sleep can make you disorientated, function poorly and unenthusiastic. There’s a reason why sleep deprivation was a torture method administered during the Second World War!

Try and recognise the signs – If you’re sitting in a lecture hall, struggling to lift your eyelids, then you probably missed out on some Z’s the night before. Make sure that you get an early night so you can wake up refreshed and motivated to blitz the day ahead, (and make up for the previous one!)

If you’re really knackered, try and get into the habit of having a couple of 5-10 minute power naps to get you back on form for your studies.

Most importantly: Try and sleep at night time. If you’ve got yourself in a routine where you’re regularly going to sleep at 3, 4 or even 6am after a night out, give yourself a period of ‘normality’ and feel your body and mind bounce back.

Aside from meeting new people and having fun, there should be an end product at university or college - a degree.

You’re there for the qualifi cation, so don’t waste the fi nancial investment and years of your life, a) doing something you don’t want to do and b) by not even trying. That’s not to say you should become a hermit and feel guilty for enjoying your social life; far from it. Taking yourself and your studies seriously is paramount if you wish to succeed. Set yourself a

target grade and do all you can to achieve it (i.e go to lectures!)

If you’re struggling with your work or not enjoying what you study, don’t be afraid to speak to your tutor, it’s what they’re for. Also, remember that changing your degree is always an option available to you.

Getting to know your classmates will help. Studying with a friend will keep you in good spirits and naturally motivate you to get more done. See it as you’re in it together!

Sausage and Mushroom Crumble

line up the sausages on a rack and place under a medium heated grill to cook for 5-6 minutes, turning occasionally.peel and slice the onion and garlic, then fry in a saucepan in oil for 3-4 minutes until softened and beginning to colour.brush off any dirt from the mushrooms and roughly chop, leaving them chunky.add the mushrooms to the pan with the onions and fry for another 3-4 minutes.cut the cooked and golden sausages into bite-sized pieces and add to the onion and mushroom mix with the tomatoes.bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes so all the flavours combine before dumping it into an oven-proof dish.preheat the oven to 180°C.rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs and then stir in plenty of salt, pepper and dried herbs of your choosing (Oregano or mixed Provencal are great).scatter over the mushroom and sausage base so that you can no longer see the tomato.bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and crumbly on top but bubbling underneath.serve with some fresh green veg. serves 4

Damien O’Brien is one of the boy wonders in the modern magic world. He has dazzled celebrities around the globe, from Nelly to Peter Andre, Alexandra Burke to Ke$ha; performed at the Brit Awards, T4 on the Beach, Wireless Festival and the London 2012 Olympic Games! But how did it all start? He explains how he went from gigging in London’s south-east pubs, to where he is today...

“I got into it when I was about 13. A friend who lived opposite me was always practicing, not silly kids stuff but proper tricks. It’s weird - once you learn one, you have to learn more; it’s really addictive.”

When asked about the fi rst trick he learnt, it is one that is still very clear in the memory, which, as he tells us, left a mark (or two) on his house. “I had about 30 cards stuck all around the house; the windows, ceiling, everything. My mum would just be screaming and shouting at me!”. The more Damien practiced, the more seriously he took it. The nerve-wracking ventures into the pubs of London’s south-east soon followed, and with a little perseverance came his big break. A break which came via a little fortune.

“I kept at it and then found out one night that there was going to a big party in London, with loads of celebrities; the whole thing. I managed to blag my way in there by showing the bouncers some magic! I gave out a load of business cards and after that I started getting calls to play at the Brit Awards and stuff . It was crazy!”

That one night has propelled Damien into the limelight, which makes us rather grateful to have spent the day with him in our hometown, Norwich, puzzling our East Anglian comrades! He has also kindly given you guys a trick-of-the-trade so to speak, which you can use to dazzle your new mates at college or university. Take it away Damien...

OK. So the trick I am giving you to fool your friends is pretty simple but always gets the job done! Here it is in four easy steps:

1) Firstly, make sure you have a pack of playing cards to hand. Before you start the trick, take a peek at the bottom card in the deck, let’s say this is the Ace of Spades.

2) Now you’re ready. Get one of your friends to chose a card from any position. Whilst they are showing this card to their friends, cut the deck in half, placing the top half of the deck to the right and the bottom half with the Ace of Spades to the left.

3) Ask your friend to place this card back on the top half of the deck. Complete the cut by placing the left hand pack with the Ace of Spades at the bottom on top of where they have just placed their card.

4) Now the rest is easy. Pick up the complete pile of cards and have a casual fl ick through. Once you come across the Ace of Spades, the card directly beneath it will be the one your friend picked out!

There you have it. You could try and spice it up a bit by claiming that you have been reading their mind, or simply fi nd it as I’ve shown you. However you decide to play this trick, if done right, it will fool everyone and most likely win you a few drinks at the bar!

The second album ‘A Moving Picture’, will be released this October, and after the immediate success of fi rst single, ‘(All Along The) Watch Tower’ ft. Ed Sheeran, Devlin is sure to be in for more of the same. We caught up with him to hear his side of things whilst also discovering what his worst chat-up line is!

things to fall into place behind the scenes. But, now we’re ready. I’ve got another sin-gle coming out after this one and then the album’s out. I can’t wait man! Just to be back in the charts, competing and selling records is nice.

How did the single come about with Ed? I met him on Example’s tour about two or three years ago; we were both supporting him. We just really clicked man. I admire his talent and he’s just a nice fella.

Has he taught you anything on guitar?Haha nah. I take my hat off to anyone who can play guitar, it’s so intricate. My hands are too big and clumsy I think!

I really like the short movie approach with the ‘(All Along The) Watchtower’ music video. Is that cinematic feel going to be an ongoing theme with your future releases and videos? Yeah defi nitely man. It was the treatment which came through that made it. The director Corin Hardy had loads of ideas about shooting it as a short fi lm. I was elated about it and yeah, we’ve set the bar now so I think I better come up with some good videos!

You had a great acting line-up in that video as well, Neil Maskell (Football Factory) being one. Yeah we had Jaime

Winstone (Kidulthood), Tilly Vosburgh (Eastenders) and George Russo (Turnout) as well. All of them just made it so much easier. It put me at ease, you know?

Did you feel a little pressure acting in front of them? I was nervous mate! I turned up and there’s a room full of 20 people who you don’t really even see. They just turn it on like nothing matters! I’ve got a new found respect for actors as well. So yeah, it was diffi cult, but I enjoyed it.

What can we expect from the rest of your album? Just me. I’m trying to keep as close to Devlin as I can. I feel we’ve grown, the music’s grown; I’ve lived two years of life in the mainstream now so I feel

like I’ve improved and am just a bit further down the line now. I’ve got a bit more to talk about and a bit more freedom. You can expect me. If you’re a fan of me, then you won’t be surprised.

Obviously with your debut being such a success, do you think it’s added a bit more pressure and expectation on your shoulders? Defi nitely bruv. You couldn’t have said it any better! It’s been a long while and the second album can be a jinx for a lot of people. But now I’m glad; Watchtower has been circulating well. Of course, there is pressure, but hopefully we can go gold again or even better.

What is Devlin’s worst chat up line?

Did you get the chance to have a break and get away from it all in-between making the two records? I did. I got to spend time with friends and family but really I’ve just been writing behind the scenes man. I’ve written so many songs but obviously only 13, 14 got used for the album in the end. We just tried to give ourselves as many options as we could.

You have a UK mini-tour in November. Are you playing any venues you haven’t before? I think I’ve been everywhere before but it’s just nice to get back out there and do my own gigs. I’ve been doing festivals and other gigs, but just to do shows for you, knowing all your fans are there is something I’ve missed. It will be good to get back out there to my fans and give them some new music.

We’ve had a couple of questions sent in for you. Jade asks, ‘What new music have you been listening to recently?’ Gotye. I really like Gotye. I think the geezer is amazing, he’s so diff erent. I like the style of his music; it’s 50s with a bit of modern thrown in it. Maverick Sabre, I really like what he’s doing. Apart from that I’ve been trapped in my little bubble!

This one is from Ben. ‘What was the spark that really made you focus on music?’ I think it was London City. Me and my management team were just depressed before it took off . We were thinking nothing’s happening; we’ve got no money in the kitty and then when London City got a lot of attention and record labels started ringing up, I think it really dawned on me that I could make a career and a living out of this.

Finally, one of the videos on SPGtv features the ‘Best and Worst Chat-up Lines’. What is Devlin’s worst chat up line? Tell a girl: “You’re an eight, I’m a ten, you’ve had a squeeze, now grab your coat!” That’s pretty raw!

Posters are underrated symbols of our livelihood. They are expressions of who we are, collectively as humans, but also as individuals. For decades they have defi ned the progression of our modern existence and to this day remain an integral part of portraying diff erent cultures, politics, art and our personal interests. They communicate, explain, explore and tantalize our attentions, bringing people together yet dividing them apart.

But what do your posters say about you? We’ve all had them. Our childhood bedroom walls may still be stained with the bluey residue that once held up our worshipped icons. Girls, maybe your walls were papered over with pop culture and boy bands, or the latest heartthrob of a blockbuster movie about vampires (a certain Mr Cullen no doubt). Boys, maybe yours were slap dashed with posing Baywatch stars, cars, footballers or a cheesy ‘funny but not funny’ chess piece reading ‘Pawn Star!’. Stereotyping, I know, but so many personal traits can be established through which artistic sheets of shiny paper we have placed on the walls of homes.

There are some which have more than stood the test of time; ones which most of you will be familiar with. The black and white ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’, with the 1930’s New York construction workers casually eating lunch on a scaff olding beam has resonated through time. War time propaganda, including the infamous ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ have equally survived the years. Of the modern day, movie posters stand tall, with the likes of Trainspotting, Pulp Fiction and Scarface becoming iconic cult symbols whilst current bestsellers include everyone’s favourite Canadian, Justin Beiber, and boyish console games.

Black Professional FootballerLong before the time of Viv Anderson, the � rst black footballer to represent England’s national team, Arthur Wharton made history by becoming the world’s � rst black professional player. With Anousheh Ansari however, you need not look any further back than 2006. On September 18th that year, Ansari became the � rst female ‘space tourist’ for her ride on the Russian Soyuz TMA-9 capsule which took her to the International Space Station. She was also a� ributed to being the � rst Iranian and the � rst Muslim woman in space. How you ask? She paid a small fee of around $20 million. Pennies.

misha b.Who needs X Factor? Or re-phrased: Who needs to win X Factor? Misha B didn’t win and by all accounts is looking like she never needed to. Since the release of her debut single ‘Home run’ back in July, the Mancunian has stormed into recognition and emerged as one of the UK’s ho� est young breakthrough artists. We caught up with her as she discussed busking on the streets of Manchester, her new single and the naughtiest thing she ever did at school.

Hi Misha! How are you? I’m great thanks, just touched down in Manchester! Can’t complain.

Have you been missing it? Yeah de� nitely. � ere ain’t no place like home!

What are you up to during the next few weeks? I’m gona be in the studio � nishing o� my album. On top of that, I’m on the

road performing at various di� erent venues across the country. Today, I’m playing at � e Baths Hall in Scunthorpe.

How has the touring been going since the release of your debut single, ‘Home Run’? � e support has been mind blowing! You know, this week for me has been so great. We got A-listed on BBC Radio 1; the support and feedback around the single has

been amazing, like from people who I never even knew had listened to the single; tweeting about it, tweeting links as well. � e support has been there, which has been really, really, really, REALLY fun for me!

Can you tell us about your new single ‘Do You � ink of Me?’ Yeah, it’s one of those songs that everyone can relate to. It’s di� erent to my � rst single, it’s got a di� erent feel to it, a li� le bit slower but with an upbeat hopeful feeling.

Lyrically, what is it about? Everyone has been in a situation, where say, you’ve fallen out with your best friend or you’re not with your partner anymore or you may have lost someone. It’s all about wondering if they’re thinking about you.

Before X Factor, you did a lot of busking and performing on the streets of Manchester. What was the most bizarre experience you had whilst doing that? I think the � rst day was the most bizarre! But having random people come up to me and cry because they were so moved by it, was for me, a really humbling experience. It’s the one thing that I can say I’m very proud of; ge� ing over my stage fright and performing to people.

Have you completely overcome stage fright? No, not completely. I don’t think I’ll ever be completely over it but I’ve learnt how to manage it now.

Have you busked since X Factor? Yeah, I actually went back to Manchester and did a bit of busking with one of my friends who busks! How was it? Yeah, it was great! It was great to see that she is still doing what she’s doing and not giving up her aspirations or anything.

So, we’re a well-behaved student magazine. Were you a well-behaved student? Yes, I was! Very, very, very well behaved. I’m actually at the college that I used to go to before X Factor right now! I used to study music, but before I came here I studied health and social care.

What was the naughtiest thing you ever did at school? I came in with my glasses on. � at’s not very naughty Misha... Yeah it is! You’re not meant to wear glasses inside! Say it had been raining and stu� , I’d come in wearing fully blacked out sunglasses. Did you get shouted at? Haha yeah. “Misha, get those glasses o� now!”

Rebel! Who are you enjoying at the moment in the UK music scene? I’m really enjoying Maverick Sabre, also Rita Ora, Labrinth, MIA...

� ere have been a lot of rumours about collaborations with your album, Missy Ellio� being one. Can you shed a li� le light on this? All of it is still up in the air. At the moment, I’m just focusing on � nishing the album and the collaborations will hopefully come a� er.

Is there a date in mind you have for � nishing the album? It should be out towards the end of the year, maybe as early as October!

Have you been trying to tackle many di� erent genres or are you just sticking to one main theme? For me, the album is just a celebration of music and that’s it really. It will be heavily soul, but with other musical elements in there. You’ve got some RnB, a bit of dance. Feel good music really!

We have a question sent in for you from Becky. She asks, “When did you � rst realise that this was something you wanted to do?” When I was 15. I thought to myself, “Where do I want to go from here?” My passion for music was coming through and then I just started working towards making my dreams come true. Busking helped, and then X Factor came along as an opportunity, so I took it, and this is what happened.

What was it like � rst hearing that you had been accepted on X Factor? Oh my gosh! I actually didn’t believe it at � rst.

How did they let you know? � ey rang me. If they didn’t ring, you knew you didn’t get through. I just thought it was a friend playing a prank on me!

Good stuff. Did you enjoy playing at V Festival? Yeah it was amazing. It was a bit weird; I wouldn’t usually think that it would be my vibe, but I went down OK and had a good crowd so it surprised me a bit!

I saw you met Baby Spice as well... Yes, I did! There was this super, super VIP area which wasn’t really part of the festival, so there was a lot of people back there who I met. I played a little acoustic set to them all, like an open mic set-up.

Nice! So, at the moment you’ve been working on the debut album. How is it coming along? I’m a good chunk of the way into it now, about three quarters of the way through. I’m coming to the fi nal stages of it, like making sure it’s all recorded properly. There’s still a lot to do but it’s getting there!

Will you be including tracks from any of the EPs that you’ve released over the past year or so? Yes, there’s going to be two or three. It’s good, a few of them have been re-recorded.

Could you talk us through the tracks (‘Home’ and ‘Ready to Question’) you played for us at Larmer Tree Festival? I wrote them both with Nick Atkinson who I’ve been working with

for quite a long time. We meet up in his bar and play songs sometimes! ‘Ready to Question’ I wrote recently and I guess it’s about religion, how it works and why people believe in certain things. We were having a hung-over chat and decided to write about it! ‘Home’ I wrote about three years ago. I didn’t really fi nish it because I had no reason to but then I moved to London and fi nished it there.

How has the move to London been for you? I didn’t know London that well so I haven’t actually moved to a very nice part! It’s a bit of a culture change but it’s lovely and I’m really liking it now.

You have a couple of tours lined up which you must be excited about? Yeah, we’ve got a UK tour in November and we’re starting to trickle out European tour dates as well. We announced Brussels yesterday and we’ve got about three more to announce too.

Are those dates sworn under secrecy? A little bit! They are the obvious European cities though, so I hope no-one is going to be too disappointed!

You’ve played in Belgium before with Gotye... Yes I did! I did two nights there with him.

How was it? It was amazing. It was when he had a number one with ‘Somebody I Used to Know’, so he was literally the biggest artist in the world at that point and I was touring with him! He’s such a nice guy as well. He’s from Brussels, had the biggest song in the world yet no-one would know who he is walking down the street, but come the night time, he’d sold out 3000 tickets two nights in a row. It was a really good tour to be a part of.

I guess you and him are quite similar in regards to how the two of you started to get recognised, by plugging yourself on YouTube and stuff like that. Yeah defi nitely. I was writing and producing myself until a team that I clicked with, got it, and that’s literally how it happened. I could have signed a deal about three years ago but I didn’t want to sign it when I didn’t know who I was. But you know, things changed, and I dragged it out for as long as I could and it worked.

I quite like your banter on Twitter. My banter? What about it?!

I just think you’re funny! Haha, I’ve got the bantz! It’s weird, you can’t please anyone on Twitter, you’ve just got to be yourself.

It’s quite a rare thing with artists. Yeah, I didn’t wana just have a Twitter account to post things like, ‘I have this song out’ or ‘Come see me - I’ve got tour tickets here’.

I’ve got a couple of tweets that I’d like you to clear up for us. One was, ‘How come only Polish men ask me to marry them?’ Haha! Well, since I said that I’ve actually had a few marriage proposals from other nationalities. But it’s weird! I don’t know why! I was looking at it the other day, and most of my marriage proposals are from Polish men. Maybe I’m a hit in Poland!

Is this all through Twitter? Yeah on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. Always asking me weird questions! But they’re all friendly, it’s fi ne. Quite funny!

The other tweet is when you said you’d punched Fearne Cotton in the face! Haha, yeah! She’d played my songs a few times and I saw her on Oxford Street, went to give her a hug and smacked her in the face! It was by accident; I just fl ew my arms out and hit her across the face. I don’t think she remembered who I was so hopefully that’s a good thing. I don’t think I’d have my songs played if she knew who I was!

I’ve seen a lot of your pet ferret as well... Oh Ferris! He’s great, I’m going to get another one actually. I got him from a friend who couldn’t look after him anymore because she’s living in a fl at and was going to take him to a home. I thought, ‘No, no - I’ll have him!’ It’s great, it’s like having a cat.

He’s going to be pretty famous. I’ve made him a Twitter account actually and a Facebook! It’s gona happen!

What’s his page like? Well, I’ve got the name up but haven’t got any pictures up yet. I don’t know how

to upload a profi le picture from a phone!

You should get an old-school camera out and do it. Yeah, maybe I should!

At Boardmasters earlier this summer you took part in a Surfers Against Sewage meet. Did you manage to have a surf? Yeah, they wanted to take me out in the sea but it was dead, so they put me on a machine which is very different to actual surfi ng! It’s not actually like that in the sea where it’s a bit inconsistent. On this you could stay on a wave for hours if you wanted to! This was right after my gig so there was a crowd of people watching me fall fl at on my face and drown!

One fi nal question. The world is supposed to end this year... What would your famous last words be? Probably, “I’ve lost my phone”. I say that every half an hour! If you knew me and heard me say “I’ve lost my phone”, you’d see that everyone just ignores me and never says anything because they know it’s in my bag or in my hands. I’m going to have it engraved on my tombstone!

Let me take you back to 1962. Production was � nished on the very � rst Bond � lm Dr. No, critics and fans of the novels were eagerly awaiting Sean Connery’s performance as the master-class spy and the American producers (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) were banking on the action � lm to become the blockbuster of the year. No one could have ever predicted the immense success the � lm would be and that it would be the precursor for the longest � lm series ever in Hollywood history. 50 years and 23 � lms later, James Bond has continued to be pure Hollywood gold and, despite its incredible highs and downright lows, the series is the second most successful series ever (only behind Harry Potter). In the half-century history of James Bond, only six actors have portrayed the spy on screen in the o� cial � lm series and each have had their own approach and responses to their screen times.

1962-1967 & 1971: Sean Connery was the fi rst and is still widely considered to be the ultimate Bond - his mixture of dark humour, his womanising nature and his ability to beat any villain up to within an inch of their life are all considered to be how Bond should be portrayed. Whilst being negatively received during production of Dr. No, Connery received positive reviews when released and this continued. However, this praise began to decline with the release of Thunderball, the fourth offi cial fi lm. Whilst the fi lm was praised for its underwater sequences and visual eff ects, Connery’s portrayal was seen as tiresome and that he was not bringing any new characteristics to the character. With this in mind, Connery stated his intention to retire from the character whilst fi lming You Only Live Twice in 1967 - his fi fth turn as the agent.

1969: A search began for a new actor and before long, a young Australian model was chosen - George Lazenby, a man with no previous acting experience whose only claim to fame was advertising Fry’s chocolates. Lazenby was reportedly a troublesome actor to work with as was noted by co-star Diana Rigg who claimed to have eaten a clove of garlic prior to their romantic scene in order to annoy Lazenby. As a result, Lazenby’s solo turn in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service still receives mixed reviews today with many praising his ability to mimic an English accent but criticising his style of copying Sean Connery as a womaniser with a little added cheek. Shortly after production began, Lazenby announced that he would only portray Bond once due to his belief that the series would become outdated in the 1970s. As such, Connery returned to the role once more for Diamonds Are Forever in 1971.

1973-1985: After this, Connery refused to return again for fear of typecasting and Roger Moore was cast instead, becoming the second Brit to portray the secret agent. Moore was previously famous in the UK for his portrayals of Simon Templar in The Saint and Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders! Moore’s performance received (and still receives) mixed reviews with many either praising or criticising his tongue-in-cheek manner. Many fans and critics consider his second turn in The Man With The Golden Gun and his fi nal fi lm A View To A Kill as some of the worst fi lms in the Bond canon. Despite these reviews, Moore went on to portray Bond for the longest period, a total of 12 years and 7 fi lms (and even became the fi rst Bond in space thanks to his fourth fi lm Moonraker). However, during A View To A Kill, Moore expressed that he felt he was too old to continue in the role (at the age of 57) and gracefully stepped aside.

1987-1989: Welsh-born stage actor Timothy Dalton was cast for the next entry The Living Daylights though he had been previously considered to replace Connery in 1968. Dalton turned this fi rst off er down feeling he was too young for the role, at the age of 22. Dalton received positive reviews with many critics noting that he was portraying the role more seriously and more akin to the novels. His second turn in Licence To Kill became the fi rst fi lm not adapted from any Ian Fleming novel and was praised for its ability to portray Bond as vengeful and hard-edge. However, this harder Bond displeased many American audiences which caused falling box offi ce grosses, making The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill two of the lowest grossing Bond fi lms in the series.

1995-2002: After the downturn of the series, Bond was revived in 1995 with Irish actor Pierce Brosnan taking on the role in GoldenEye, when Dalton offi cially announced his reluctance to return. Brosnan was initially signed on to play Bond in 1987 but had to refuse after his program Remington Steele was renewed for a new series. Brosnan received positive reviews, noting his ability to mix humour with action and womanising. Many critics also believed him to be a similar Bond to Connery without the backdrop of the Cold War. Even though GoldenEye was critically acclaimed, Brosnan’s subsequent fi lms received mixed reviews overall for its growing reliance on action and special eff ects. Brosnan played the role for four fi lms, ending in 2002 with Die Another Day when he left considering himself too old (at the age of 50).

2006-present: In 2006, a reboot of the series was planned, showing Bond starting out as a secret agent. Many actors were considered for the role including Henry

Cavill (who will be seen portraying the new Superman in Man of Steel) and Sam Worthington (Avatar). However when Daniel Craig was cast, there was

extreme negative backlash, many criticising his blonde hair, his shorter stature and desire to play Bond as arrogant and naïve. But with the launch

of Casino Royale, Craig received near universal critical acclaim, with critics believing him to be the most accurate Bond compared to the novels and

triumphing Connery in the role. This acclaim continued on to its sequel Quantum of Solace, marking the fi rst time that any Bond fi lm had a

direct sequel. Whilst Craig continued to be well received, the sequel itself was not considered as strong an entry as Casino Royale. Craig is still portraying Bond and will be seen on-screen for the third time in 2012’s Skyfall.

Be Beautifulon a BudgetCosmetics are expensive, fact. With foundation regularly costing £20, good shampoo and conditioner coming to over £5 and even moisturiser costing near the same, prices soon add up. One day last year, when my bank balance refl ected a Millennium Dome scale crisis, I decided to start making cosmetics myself and here I am to share my wisdom.

Instead of forking out on exfoliators and body scrubs, make your own. For a base, take equal parts of sugar to olive oil and add some scents. Honey is fragrant, but I prefer to add lime and lemon juice for that ‘wake me up’ zesty smell. Not only is this a smart beauty product, but also put in a nice jar with some ribbon makes a thoughtful, cheap present.

There are dozens of recipes for conditioners; egg whites, mayonnaise, honey (my favourite), but to give your hair a little extra shine, pour on two tablespoons of malt vinegar and rinse thoroughly. Somehow smelling of a chippy makes the shine less attractive!

Run out of dry shampoo and haven’t got time for a shower? Combat grease with a little baby powder or talcum powder on the roots for blonde hair and a dusting of bronzer for brunettes. Job done.

Be Beautifulon a Budget

Not only are they delicious, but strawberries should be your new beauty staple. Save yourself money on expensive teeth-whitening toothpastes; mix a little mushed strawberry with your toothpaste and brush. Their acidic nature has been proven to whiten teeth. Baking soda is more commonly suggested, however, this can be a little harsh on your teeth.

Here’s another strawberry trick! Replace acne products with ¼ cup of fresh strawberries and ¼ cup of yoghurt. Spread on your skin, leave for 15 minutes and rinse. Strawberries contain salicylic acid, which is an ingredient commonly found in skin treatments.

A quick Google search will give you hundreds of facemask recipes, but my favourite is with avocado. This is great for those of you with sensitive skin. Mix avocado, yoghurt, honey and a little cream; spread on; leave for 15 minutes and wash off . If you’re on a really tight budget, using olive oil on your skin has similar eff ects – although I’m not sure the smell and texture would be quite as nice.

Pick up some cheap rose petals, pack a cup tightly with them and pour boiling water over the top. Leave until the liquid is cool, strain the water out, refrigerate and you’ll have yourself a cheap, scented toner.

If you’re a nail-varnish abuser and have been left with stained nails, soak them in hot water with a slice of lemon and watch them brighten up. Lemon juice can also help sort out patchy fake tan.

If you’ve had a night out on the town and are feeling worse for wear, all you want to do is get better, pronto! For an eff ective detox, make yourself a hot water and slice of lemon in the morning; both refreshing and cleansing. If you have puff y hangover eyes, try the classic cucumber slices on your eye lids. Slices of potato also work great.

When a friend suggested this to me, I was skeptical. If you struggle to walk in heels, rub a little vodka on the balls of your feet and you will see miracles. Don’t ask me to explain how this one works but trust me, it does!

Remember, no amount of products will help you if you’re loading your body with takeaways and fi zzy drinks. Drinking plenty of water, green tea and getting your 5-a-day is unrivalled for health benefi ts, so pay as much attention to the inside of your body as you do the outside!

With all these cheap or, even bett er, free accessories, you can make all sorts of interesti ng and personal things that will make such a diff erence to your look. Glam up that plain Alice band with a few feathers or gems. Or why not make the ring of your dreams by adding some sparkling jewels to it?!

Grab a plain pair of heels and glue a few studs or jewels to the side of the heel. This will get all your mates asking where you brought them from! It’s such an easy way to transform your old heels.
