From the President

Daniel JohnsonBoard President

I could not be more proud to serve as the Board President for The Steamer Virginia V Foundation. Looking back, it has been a monumental year. Heron Scott completed his first twelve months as Executive Director and has exceeded our expec-tations for his vision, passion and leadership. The Board completed a strategic planning process that focuses on expanding our programs to introduce more people to this historic treasure and strengthening our business practices and fundraising to ensure the ship will be enjoyed for generations to come. As stewards of a rare wooden historic artifact that requires continuous care and regular haul outs, we have completed a long-term restoration plan for the vessel. While we still carry some debt for past major renovation, I am pleased to report we have raised the funding necessary to pay for our 2015 and 2017 haul-outs – a first in our history. Our vision is to become the region’s premier maritime icon with robust programs and a diverse engaged membership en-suring a bright, sustainable future for the SS Virginia V. There will be challenges that confront us in our endeavor; however, with good planning, a talented crew and engaged supporters we are on steady course toward this goal.I look forward to continuing that work with you in the year ahead.

Heron ScottExecutive Director

From the Director In 2014, the Virginia V reached more people than ever. We welcomed aboard more than 20,000 visitors to experience the magic of our beloved ship. That is well above our 10,000 visitor goal and a spectacular increase beyond our 5,000 visitors in 2013. To accomplish this, we completed over 30 underway trips and another 30 dockside events on the vessel. We invested in keeping the ship open on weekends with Dock Manager Ed Brown offering consistent tours to visitors at Lake Union Park. We crafted strong partnerships with MOHAI, NW Seaport, and CWB to produce joint events like the American Alliance of Museums party and the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. And finally, we took the Virginia V on several epic journeys around Puget Sound including Port Townsend, Bainbridge Island, and Tacoma. Programmatically, 2014 has been very special as well. We’ve started a new summer internship program with the Ballard Maritime Academy using the Virginia V as an educational and training tool for young mariners, worked with MOHAI to deliver an annual youth summer camp experience, started a dockside yoga class, and produced three musical events on the ship with a local non-profit partner. All of these events contribute to the Virginia V brand and mission of the Steamer Virginia V Foundation and set the stage for more growth and opportunity in the years ahead. I also cannot say enough about our incredible team of volunteers that run this ship. In 2014, over 3,500 hours of service have been dedicated to supporting the Virginia V. This is an awe-inspiring, humbling number. Volunteers oil the engine, clean the ship, greet visitors, and perform countless other tasks that keep this remarkable vessel looking and functioning as good as she does. Thank you volunteers for a great year and a job well done! Members and supporters of the Steamer Virginia V Foundation, thank you for your dedication. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in 2015.
