Welcome!

On behalf of the Virginia Beach Education Foundation (VBEF), I wish to congratulate the recipients of the 2012 -2013 Building Futures and Schoolwide Grants.

In total, the Education Foundation is awarding $72,000 to support 58 grant projects. The funding comes from donations large and small, from corporate underwriters and personal donations made by teachers and community members directly to the Foundation or through United Way contributions.

Over the past 10 years, VBEF has awarded over $1 million in grants to Virginia Beach teachers and schools to fund projects. Tens of thousands of children have reaped the benefits of our collective commitment to improving educational opportunities for students. As a result, our students have become more civic minded through the many service learning projects and collaborative activities supported by our grants. It is truly an example of the “pay it forward” philosophy.

Through the Building Futures Grants Program, the VBEF provides teachers with awards of up to $1,000 to cover the costs of materials, supplies and other expenses needed to implement short- and long-term programs, activities, experiments and other innovative learning opportunities for students. In varying ways, each grant supports the school division’s strategic plan for student success, Compass to 2015, by helping students develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, sustainability and global awareness.

On the pages of this booklet you will find descriptions of this year’s 58 grant projects. They range from literacy programs and the development of sustainable habitats and gardens in school courtyards to student-led technology academies and leadership development programs. Throughout the year, the Foundation will share with you photos, videos and personal stories from students which highlight the impact these programs are having on the children of our community. I encourage you to share these stories with others as examples of the outstanding teaching and learning supported in part by the Education Foundation.

I offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to those of you who educate our children as well as to the individuals, businesses and organizations that generously contribute to the Virginia Beach Education Foundation and allow us to support innovative student learning.

In gratitude,

Neil L. Rose President
