Clear, Crisp Run at Local Trade Fairfor Young Enterprise TeamsEight teams from local school sixth forms, donnedmarket trader caps at the Stone Farmers’ MarketTrade Fair on Saturday 7th February, as part of thenational Young Enterprise business competition.

Competition and calibre was high this year withproducts ranging from interactive printed children’sbooks; scented candles in vintage china-ware,reclaimed vinyl records moulded in the form of bowls,clocks and notebooks; branded clothing; essentialschool stationery packs; hot drink ‘cup coats’; andstencils for food and beverages.

Young Enterprise, the largest business andenterprise education charity, plays a huge part innurturing our next generation of entrepreneurs. Thecurrent programme began in September 2014 andteams have already submitted a business plan,attended marketing and finance workshops, and takenpart in a Dragons’ Den style pitch.

“All teams performed phenomenally well, despite thecold,” explained Stafford and Stone Area Board ChairSarah White, “this kind of challenge really does highlightsome of the rising talent we have in our local schools.”

The teams were judged on the financial information ofthe business, the aesthetical presentation of their stand

and product display, with key evidence of progressrequired, and an interview with a panel of judges.

Congratulations were extended to Team Cygni fromBlythe Bridge High School for winning the BestBusiness Plan Award and to Team Write fromSt.Dominics in Brewood for winning the best TradeStand on the day. Certificates to the winning andrunner-up teams, plus certificates of attendance, werepresented by honouree guest of the day and recentlyelected Leader of the Stafford Borough Council, PatrickFarrington.

Two special commendations went to Matthew,managing director from Team Cygni, and Darcy fromTeam Revolution, Stafford Grammar, for the mostentrepreneurial boy and girl.

The judges on the day, Roger Mason, John Haine andJane Hemmings (from Yarnfield Business Park whohosted the YE Dragons’ Den) were amazed at thepreparation and confidence shown by some of the teamrepresentatives during their interviews.

The Trade Fair is just one of a number of organisedevents aimed at building and testing the businessknowledge of the participating students. The next keymilestone in the competition will be the submission ofan official company report, followed by the formal areapresentation evening.

In past years, the Stafford and Stone area teams haveproduced exceptional results with the winning teamsfrom the last four years all reaching the County orNational London Country Finals in the competition.

A trader has moved to a bigger unit at StaffordIndoor Market thanks to increasing demand forhis musical instruments.

Kevin Smith originally soldwatches and batteriesfrom his stall but startedstocking a small rangeof acoustic guitars overtime. His business hasgrown and as a result he’snow enjoying trading froma larger unit capable ofhousing more guitars.

The new ‘Watch and Guitar Surgery’ has a widerrange of acoustic guitars, watches and batteriesavailable.

Kevin used to own a bar in the town centre which

regularly hosted live music events. He says he’shappy to be going back to his roots andhelping people develop a love for music by sellingthe guitars.

The Watch and Guitar Surgery is open Tuesdays andThursdays 9am - 4.30pm and Fridays and Saturdays9am - 5pm at the Stafford Borough Council runindoor market.

Situated on Eastgate Street between theShrewsbury Arms and County Staffs Club, theClub first opened its doors back in 1943, overthe years the club has under gone numerouschanges , including the addition of a functionroom in the late 1980’s and is available to hirefor events and parties We wavier the cost or givediscounts for charities and fundraisers.

The club is filled with memorabilia from daysgone by and is home to a number of groups andassociations the Royal Air Force Associationmeet monthly the Royal Artillery Association,Naval Association, Engineers Association andStafford Camera Club as well as meetings heldby the Philanthropic and Charitable fraternalorder of the ‘Buffs’ - The Royal AntediluvianOrder of Buffaloes. We also have pool, domino,darts and crib teams and would welcome moreteams to use the club facilities.

Louise Lovatt the stewardess of the club said,“Over the recent years we have seen a declinein membership for a number of reasons onebeing our ageing member’s and decline of socialclubs in general, look at the St. Leonards SocialClub (MRI club). The Club is a great place andwe would like to encourage people to come andsee us and try us out. Our town centre locationmakes us a great place for meeting up duringthe day for a coffee or for a night out, with socialclub prices too. We have some fantastic eventson throughout the year for all ages, from the

annual summer fair to gentleman’s evenings andpamper days. We have live entertainment twicea month on a Saturday night which you also canhave a quick game of bingo in the interval and afun quiz.

Families are welcome at the club at all times.Membership is open to everyone membership ifyou wish to join after giving us the once over isonly £2.50 to become a club member and £17 tobecome a branch member.
