John’s eagerness for change, Musa’s help with the
exterior spring clean & Linda’s help with
coordinating the timing of the project, this update
would not have been such a smooth one with
such a fresh, welcoming outcome. Sincere thanks
to you all! Mychelle Taylor & Maureen Simpson.
A message to past catechism children from
Mychelle Taylor It always warms my heart when I see the children (some now young adults!) whom I had the privilege of sharing our Catholic Faith with through catechism, serving our parish on the altar, ushering, standing for election onto the PPC or coming up to receive communion. Some now engaged, others married & still others about to bear their own children. These are fine young parishioners, living out their faith. Not only do I applaud them but their parents too for the continued commitment to honour the promises they have each made to God on receiving the sacraments. May God bless you abundantly and thank you for sharing your special talents with and being an active part of the St Dom’s community. You make me so proud! Mychelle Taylor x

AN UNFORGETTABLE PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND
By Jenny Meilhon
A group of St Dominic’s Saturday walkers recently
returned from a pilgrimage to Poland led by Fr Pawel
Kaczmarek of Centocow Mission and Fr Brian
Southward. There are no words to describe this truly
amazing, uplifting and spiritual experience, where we
were privileged to visit places, which the ordinary
tourist would never gain access to. We stayed in
convents and monasteries throughout the trip,
attending mass each day in private chapels. Deeply
moving were our visits to Niepokalanow Monastery,
the home of St Maximilian Kolbe; the room in which St
John Paul II stayed in the Ursuline Convent in
Zakopane, and Auschwitz/Birkenau where St
Maximilian Kolbe gave his life for that of another man.
We saw the hometown of St John Paull II at Wadowice,
the convent and church of St Faustina of Divine Mercy
at Lagiewniki and stayed in a lodge in the Gorce
Mountains which had been visited by St John Paul II.
We also had fun – rafting on the Dunajec River,
riding the cable car up the Kasprowsy Mountain, on
the top of which is the border between Poland and
Slovakia, plus a visit to the Hot Springs at Bukowina
Tatrazanska.
Two of the highlights of our trip were attending
the Pilgrims’ mass at St Anna’s in Warsaw, and joining
the pilgrims on the last two days of their walk to reach
Czestochowa on 15 August, the Feast of the
Assumption of Our Blessed Lady. A total of
approximately 380,000 people walk from all over
Poland each year. The Warsaw Group that we joined
walked 280kms in nine days to reach Czestochowa and
the chapel of the Black Madonna in the Jasna Gora
Monastery where many masses are celebrated. Young
and old, including children in pushchairs, go on this
pilgrimage, each group praying and singing along the
way and accompanied by many priests.
It was a truly moving experience to witness the faith
and joy with which the Polish people make this
pilgrimage. We were privileged to join them for about
16kms along the way.
This unforgettable journey will live in our hearts
forever. Thank you Fr Pawel and Fr Brian!
Another pilgrimage to Poland is on the cards for
2020. If you are interested, please contact Fr Brian
Southward on 082 210 9742.

The Community Services Committee had a pretty busy
month. These are some of their activities for August:
Mike Ronald and his family donated their jungle
gym to Community Services, which we donated to
Genesis Crèche in Molweni. Morrell, with the help
of John and Peter very kindly agreed to
deconstruct and reconstruct it. A huge thank you
to you all. The children love the gym.
Francis, Hazel and Pauline visited Itemba Elisha
and blessed them with comforters donated by
Theresa and her family of Our Lady of Mercy
parish in Kloof. Itemba Elisha is a home for the
aged, sickly and homeless children. Thank you
Theresa.
Sabrina accompanied the children of Winston
Park Primary School to Genesis Crèche where they
blessed the crèche with more than 150 tins of
foods, as well as clothing for the children. The
school children spent time playing with the crèche
children.
Anne, Lisa, Josh, Laraine and Sabrina took the pre-
schoolers from Siyathandwe Community Centre to
Ushaka. Thank you must go to Sr Urlich and the
Precious Blood Sisters for their donations which
covered the entry fee. Thank you ladies for
providing the picnic lunch and the transport for
the children. The children were amazed by all the
fish and thrilled by the dolphin show.
Francis, Hazel and Pauline travelled to the
KwaNyuswa DIC each Tuesday afternoon to help
the children who attend this centre improve their
English, grow their general knowledge and
introduce them to various life skills. This week
Hazel prepared an exciting cup-cake icing
exercise for all the children.
Francis, Rosanna and Sabrina go to the Bethlehem
DIC each Wednesday afternoon to help the
children who attend the centre improve their
English, general knowledge and life skills. Francis
involved her children with singing and playing a
matching game, which they all enjoyed.
Thank you to John Snook who responded to our
appeal for a sewing machine for an orphaned
young male in the Embo area. Watch this space
for a pic when we hand it over to him. Bless you.

Donations appeal
Community Services is appealing for toothbrushes
and toothpaste for the month of September. These
will go into the Christmas gift boxes which are made
up for under-privileged children in the Valley.
There will be a box at the entrance of the church
marked Community Service for you to pop them
into. Thank you in advance for your support.
A REASON TO ADORE JESUS
“Eucharistic adoration is not simply for the person
praying in adoration, it is for the entire Church, and for
the entire world.
What happens in adoration may be likened to what
happens when someone receives a transfusion.
It is as if God places a very tiny needle into the soul
of the adorer, and by means of an attached tube,
transfers his very life into the soul of the adorer.
As in a hospital, the tube brings medicine and
liquid and helps to heal whatever disease the person is
suffering from.
This is happening on the spiritual level, bringing
spiritual healing.
But it is not just the soul of the single adorer that is
affected. Through the mystical communion of all
believers, that transfiguring and healing divine energy
is passed through the single adorer into the entire
mystical body of the Church, purifying the Church.
When we go into adoration, we are disposing
ourselves to become nodes, conduits, for the
purification of the entire Church, and through the
Church, of the entire world.
So it is not a meaningless action, or even an action
aimed at one's own personal purification.
It is the essential action to bring Christ's Eucharistic
purification into the entire body of the Church, to do
reparation for all sins and abuses, and to begin to heal
them.” (By the author of “In Sinu Jesu” (a monk in a Benedictine monastery in Ireland)

The Last Laugh
What time of day was Adam created? Just a little before Eve.
Why are atoms Catholic? Because they have mass.
Why didn’t Noah ever go fishing? He only had two worms.
Did Eve ever have a date with Adam? Nope — just an apple.
What’s so funny about forbidden fruits? They create many jams.
Why couldn’t Jonah trust the ocean? He just knew there was something fishy about it.
What kind of man was Boaz before he married Ruth?
Absolutely ruthless
Who was the greatest moneyman in the Bible?
Noah. He was floating his stock while everyone else was in liquidation.
