Several deputies with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office juvenile division recently facilitated a talk with a group of middle school students about the dangers of using social media, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

During the lecture held March 16 at N.P. Trist Middle School in Meraux, Capt. Mark Jackson, Lt. Michelle Canepa, Det. Don-ald Shreve and Det. Joe Warren were accompanied by an agent from Louisiana

Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Bureau of Investigations Cyber Crime Unit.

Students in sixth through eighth grades were educated on the risks involved with cyber-bullying, or using technology to

harass, threaten, embarrass or target another person.

Students were given informa-tion on how to recognize cyber-bullying, as well as advice on how to respond to certain situ-ations that may arise.

Trist Principal Denise Pritchard also took part in the lecture.

“We have been having more and more problems arising from social media pouring into our schools,” Pritchard said. “We have been spending a lot of time investigating things on social media that are disrupting learning time so we wanted to bring in some professionals to offer their expertise in this area

away on March 13, 2017 in Slidell, LA at the age of 60. Born November 19, 1956 in New Orleans, Lou-isiana to Harry and Mae Morgan. Pamela always tried to do the best she could for everyone. Her life was not perfect, and she encountered many humps in the road, but was always dressed for every occasion. She loved shopping for a cute pair of heels, crafting and creating elaborate floral arrangements.

She will be fondly remembered for the fun times out on the water, whether she was sun tanning on the beach or screaming “Here fishy fishy” trying to catch her a big redfish. Pamela will be forever remem-bered for her enthusiasm and bubbly personality.

Her spirit is carried on by her mother Mae Morgan, sister Tammy Morgan (Alice Avery), brother Keith Morgan (Patricia Moran), half-sister Marsha Morgan, 4 sons Dustin Gisclair (Christie Bene), Brad Boudreaux, Travis Troxclair (Jessica Troxclair) and Nicholas Troxclair, 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

St. Bernard Recreation Department kicks off 2017 soccer season

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division receives bullet proof vest

St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department kicked off the 2017 Soccer Season with games this past weekend at Carolyn Park, Hannan and Kenilworth. There are 710 children participating this season ranging from ages 4 to 14. The teams consists of 5 year old boys, 6 year old boys, 7-8 boys, 9-10 boys, 5-6 girls, 7-8 girls and 9-10 girls. The Co-ed teams are 4 year olds, 11-12 year olds and 13-14 year olds. The soccer season ends April 8th with playoff games to follow. Come out and support your zones.

Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Chalmette recently donated a bullet proof vest to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office Re-serve Division, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Each year, Gethsemane holds an Oktoberfest on the church grounds which features German style food, live music, games and crafts. Steven Brandt, a church council member, said pro-ceeds from the annual event are donated to worthy causes in the parish.

“This year, we decided one of the organizations we wanted to help was the Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division,” Brandt said.

The Second Chance bullet proof vest, which cost approxi-mately $500 and was specially fitted, will be used by Reserve Dep. Monica D’Antoni, Sheriff Pohlmann said.

Anyone interested in joining the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division can call Capt. Charles Borchers at (504) 278-7628 or Sgt. Eric Eilers at (504) 278-7799 for more information.

Lieutenant Governor Nungesser traveled to Missouri and Washington D.C. for tourism and seafood advocacy

Shine Productions to host a “Shine Variety Show” at Docville to benefit The Community Center of St. Bernard

Lieutenant Governor Nung-esser will spent last week trav-eling to Branson, Missouri, and Washington D.C. to support his agencies within the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tour-ism.

On Monday, March 13, Nun-gesser addressed a group of more than 300 tour operators and travel writers to promote

Louisiana at the Travel South Domestic Showcase held in Branson, Missouri. Nungesser spoke to the group about the importance of sending their tour groups to Louisiana and why they should showcase Louisi-ana to their clients. The group was greeted with a warm Loui-siana welcome thanks to a mu-sical performance by John Gray and the program concluded with a traditional Louisiana sec-ond line.

The rest of the week Lt. Gov-ernor Nungesser was engaged in Washington D.C. with the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) and the Louisiana Seafood Marketing and Promotion Board, which he heads, and testified at the U.S. International Trade Com-mission (USITC) Sunset Review

on retaining current shrimp anti-dumping orders.

Nungesser also had the op-portunity to meet with sever-al lieutenant governors from throughout the country who were in attendance for the NLGA conference throughout the week.

Lt. Governor Nungesser was also able to give a personal testi-mony to the USITC in favor of re-taining the current antidumping orders that have been placed on shrimp in the U.S. The seafood industry employs nearly 43,000 people in our state. Louisiana shrimpers catch over 50 million pounds of shrimp annually, with landed values typically exceed-ing $200 million.

Before the orders were im-posed, unfairly traded imports from Brazil, China, India, Thai-

land, and Vietnam inundated the U.S. market and drove prices down to dangerously low levels for the families and businesses that rely on shrimping for their livelihoods.

The USITC instituted orders on dumped shrimp which have kept significant volumes of un-fairly traded shrimp out of the market since 2005, allowing the domestic industry to compete fairly. Lt. Governor Nungesser testified to keep those orders intact to protect our Louisiana families livelihoods.

Thursday night, March 16, Lt. Governor Nungesser was one of ten lieutenant governors selected to attend the White House St. Patrick’s Day recep-tion with President Trump and the Prime Minister of Ireland, Enda Kenny.

Shine Productions, will hold a “Shine Variety Show” for a good cause on Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. with all proceeds benefiting the literacy and food bank initiatives for The Com-munity Center of St. Bernard. The show will take place at the Docville Farm and promises to be a fun fundraiser. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Cafe Aquarius in Chalmette or by calling (504) 301-8770.

Barry Lemoine and the Shine Productions’ troupe are orga-nizing this event to help others and showcase the local talent. “The fundraiser will help in the Community Center’s mission to feed hungry families and hungry minds through nutrition and lit-eracy,” Lemoine said.

Lemoine said the show will be fun, fast, and sometimes poignant. “The show will also showcase the beginning of a new work, “A Love Song to St. Bernard Parish,” with a monologue performed by Will Schnedier and accompaniment

by the band Cypress Pop Trio.” The Silver Linings, a senior sing-ing and acting group will also debut.

The variety show is an hom-age to Shine Productions earli-er days as a fledgling company when Shine would hold “Friday Night Live” variety shows on the first Friday of every month at Nunez Community College. “That was 15 years ago, and now there is so much new tal-ent to showcase in St. Bernard,” Lemoine said. “It will be fun and nostalgic and something St. Bernard folks should enjoy it.”

This evening of music, come-dy and dance featuring some of St. Bernard’s best local talent, such as Will Schneider, Krystal and Keith Gonzales, Cypress Pop Trio, David Hennessy, An-nelise and Arianna Cassar, Jack Jackson, Sara Felt, Pam Wegenner, the members of the Silver Lining Singers, Abagail Coker, Elena Ozuna, and several surprise guests.

Community Center vice chair,

Kim Melerine said they are ap-preciative of the community support since the center has re-opened. “The variety show will be a night to come together and have some fun and fundraise. All proceeds will help those in need in our community.”

“A special thank you to Shine

Productions for putting this to-gether and the Meraux Founda-tion for hosting this event,” Mel-erine said.

For more information visit Shine Productions or The Com-munity Center of St. Bernard on Facebook or call (504) 301-8770.
