PretzelMania Brings Fun to Beginning of Lent The Annual PretzelMania event helps open our Lenten observances here at St. Andrew’s and reminds us of some of the traditional fasting disciplines used during this season. It is a time for

the people of St. Andrew’s to enjoy some fellowship and get creative in their pretzel making skills. A special thanks to Jamie and Don Bezold, our PretzelMania coordinators, who lead us in this fun and educational event.

St. Andrew’s Supports Education Foundation Fundraiser The people of St. Andrew’s were well represented at this year’s Ft. Thomas Education Foundation Annual Fundraiser. The annual dance and social provides needed funding for our local independent school district while offering an evening of fun to local residents.

Thank you to all of our members who support this annual event through sponsorships and auction item purchases.

2 The Ingathering of Mite Boxes will take place on

Easter Sunday, April 1st.

The 1st Letter of Timothy describes what type of person we should be. We are to be people who “Do good, are rich in good works, generous and ready to share”. (1 Timothy 6:18) Our Mite Box Offering will do two things. It will help people in our area who are food insecure have enough to eat. The proceeds from our Mite Box Offering will be given to St. Paul’s Church to support their food pantry. Our offering will also help us become more fully that type of person that the Epistle of Timothy describes.

If you do not have a Mite Box and you wish to make a donation, please make your check payable to St. Andrew’s Church/Mite Box Offering.

I hope that each of you will support this project. Thank you.

Holy Week Traditions Help Prepare for the Joy of Easter… Easter is fast approaching, and to help prepare for this joyous celebration the church provides special events in the week leading up to Easter to help bring focus to the end of our Lenten discipline. Palm Sunday is the last Sunday in Lent. The day commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem with a blessing of palms and a procession in which the whole congregation carries palms. The day is also marked by reading the story of Jesus’ passion (the word used to describe Jesus’ death comes from "suffering," which is one old meaning of passion). Some of the Palm Sunday palms are kept and used to make the Ash Wednesday ashes for the next year. This year Palm Sunday falls on March 25th and services will be held at 8am and 10am. Maundy Thursday is the Thursday in Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter). The day is a time for remembering The Last Supper. The name comes from the Latin word "Maundatum" for "commandment" as Jesus said, "I give you a new commandment; that you love one another." This is marked with footwashing as an optional part of the worship service for those who wish to follow Jesus' example. At the conclusion of this service, altars are stripped of any ornamentation and crosses are removed or veiled to mark the solemnity of the occasion. Maundy Thursday falls on March 29th, and the parish liturgy for the day will be held at 7pm. The Holy Week Prayer Vigil is a new custom at St. Andrew’s Church. This prayer vigil before the Blessed Sacrament continues from the end of the service on Maundy Thursday to noon on Good Friday. The vigil takes place in Bethany Chapel. The vigil is divided into 30 minute intervals. A sign up sheet will be posted if you are interest in this special Holy Week devotion. Good Friday is a time for remembering Jesus’ death. This is the second day of special observance for which fasting is recommended. One should use discretion in deciding how best to observe this day. There is no celebration of Communion after the Maundy Thursday liturgy until the Great Vigil of Easter

on Saturday night. On Good Friday there are two special litur-gies of the day. The first is the Solemn Collects of Good Friday which this year takes place on March 30th, at 12noon. The second liturgy of the day is a service of the Stations of the Cross. This liturgy focuses on depictions of 14 incidents in the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ death, from Pilate’s house to being placed in the tomb. They are used for the service called the Way of the Cross, which visits each station in turn with a brief reading, response, collect and on some occasions, a meditation. This is particularly appropriate for Good Friday and is held at St. Andrew’s Church in conjunction with the Ft. Thomas Ministerial Association. This year the liturgy is held on March 30th, at 7pm.

The Great Vigil of Easter is the central liturgy of the Christian Church. All other celebrations in the Church year flow out of this service and are informed by the commemoration celebrated in the readings and the prayers of this Feast. In Northern Kentucky, we celebrate this Feast with our lar-ger Episcopal Church Family. The service moves from year to year among our four local congregations. This year the Great Vigil will be hosted at 7pm, March 31st, by Grace Episcopal Church, 7111 Price Pike in Florence, across from Boone County High School. Our Bishop Pro-visional, the Rt. Rev’d. Mark Van Koevering, will preach

and celebrate at the service. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Updates from the Vestry

Vestry Leadership - After thanking David Wilshire, Dick Rice, Doug Smith, and Terry Fenhoff for their leader-ship last year, the Vestry welcomed new members Doug DeSola, Keith Gilles, Len Nobel, and Sue Swain. We also welcomed Kelsey Hoover who will fill an unexpired term. For 2018. the Vestry has elected and confirmed Keith Hahn as Senior Warden and Jerry Kohls as Junior Warden, and Keith Gilles as Parish Clerk. Membership Development Commission - The Membership Development Commission met on Feb. 26th to review the preliminary results of parish survey, and work on intentional steps we can take to welcome and con-nect with visitors to our church family. The Survey remains available for completion. If you have not participated, look for the link in the Weekly eBulletin.

The committee is also exploring an option that will allow streaming and archiving of our Sunday services. Parishioners can access it when they are out of town, or even out of the country. It will also be available to shut-ins or those who missed weekly services due to emergency circumstances. Once installed, this will be

accessible from the St. Andrews website. Diocesan Matters - The Diocesan Convention was held at Emmanuel Church, Winchester, on February 24. The

Convention elected the Rt. Rev. Mark Van Koevering as the new Provisional Bishop to lead the Diocese the next several years. He will be in place in March and will begin visiting the Parishes. A Michigan native, Bishop Van Koevering studied agronomy, genetics, and plant breeding at Michigan State University. His academic background took him to do work in the Peace Corps in Thailand as well as time teaching in China. His first experience in Mozambique was in the midst of war, where he promoted peace and reconciliation in conjunction with the Mennonite Central Committee. He was ordained deacon and priest in the Church of Wales, and served in parishes there, as well as serving as a priest in the Diocese of Niassa in

Mozambique. He was called from Wales as Bishop of the Diocese of Niassa in 2003, and served as the diocesan bishop there until 2015. In his time there, he saw the diocese grow significantly, with 200 new church plants in

his tenure. He empowered and helped to form local leadership in parishes and initiated comprehensive, holistic social development. Late in 2015, he was called as the Assisting Bishop of the Diocese of West Virginia and has been serving in that capacity since December 2015. He is married to The Rev’d. Helen Van Koevering, and they

have three grown children; Jake, Matt, and Kylie. Buildings & Grounds - The Vestry had an introductory session with Detective Tony Jansen from the Covington Police Department to begin a review and assessment of building security approaches. The Vestry continues researching and analyzing security options, including cameras and access. We continue in our patient monitoring of the parking lot situation, including receiving a bid we solicited. The parking lot committee is examining all options, even some which have not been considered and investigated. The prudent use of our funds, especially in light of other costly repairs and maintenance, demands that we make stra-tegic decisions that will have realistic opportunities for funding. We have engaged Episcopal Church Foundation and will begin meeting with our consultant, Linda Buskirk, from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in March to initiate the proc-ess in considering a capital campaign. The first step is a discernment of our long-range needs. The parking lot committee, the finance committee, the vestry, and the rest of the congregation will all be involved in this process. AED Class-Staff from the Northern Kentucky EMS will hold a review class on our Automated External Defibrillator at St. Andrews on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. The defibrillator is a very important piece of equipment used for cardiac arrests. Review classes are required every two years. Eight participants are re-quired and St. Andrews will pay the participant fee. The class is two hours. Dinner will be provided, A sign up sheet is available in the Parish Hall . Please sign up by Friday March 16th. For more information, contact Charlene Rasche at 513-304-6510 or Dick Rice at 859-441-0341.

Easter Song

By George Herbert

Rise, heart, thy lord is risen. Sing his praise

Without delays,

Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise

With him may'st rise:

That, as his death calcinèd thee to dust, His life may make thee

gold, and, much more, just.

Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part

With all thy art,

The cross taught all wood to resound his name Who bore the same.

His stretchèd sinews

taught all strings what key Is best to celebrate this most high day.

Consort, both heart and lute,

and twist a song Pleasant and long;

Or, since all music is but three

parts vied And multiplied Oh let thy blessèd Spirit bear a part,

And make up our defects with his sweet art.
