Theatre Group The Sound of Music

When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she’s dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern captain, and they marry. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. Please sign up and pay at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Place beginning Sunday, November 10. Deadline for signing up is Sunday, December 15.

FROM THE PASTOR

Two things I’d like to share with you. The first is the exciting news that I announced at our all congregational dinner last week. Thirty-nine members of the congregation came together to commit a leadership gift of $2,177,00 to the Rekindle the Gift campaign. This includes one family who made a million-dollar commitment. This is a fantastic kick-off. Now it’s time for the rest of us to make our commitments. Our goal is $3.1 million, but honestly it will probably require more than that to complete the Peel house project. Not significantly more, but as our contractor works with subs the price is coming in higher than the architects’ estimate. I think we can more than cover it with this campaign if every single one of us makes a commitment.

Full participation is the goal of the Rekindle the Gift campaign. We want everyone to turn in a commitment card at the level they are comfortable with. Volunteers on the response team will be following up with each of us and make arrangements to come and pick up our commitments if we are unable to return them in worship on the 17th.

This is such an exciting time in the life of our church. Thank you for engaging and being part of God’s work among us!

The second thing I want to share with you is an update on my son, Sam. So many of you have asked about him and shared that you are praying. It is really encouraging to have a whole congregation supporting our family during this difficult time. Sam is very sick; he has pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). He had to return to the ICU in Denver last Monday. The good news is that Sam seems to feel good and has good energy, even though it masks the underlying heart disease that he has. He will be given a central line and on a continuous IV drip medication for at least a year, likely longer. So, he will be on both oxygen, and this new medication in addition to two oral medications. Victoria and I will have to become experts in mixing his new medication and running it through the pump.

Obviously, this is a game changer for our family and it’s hard to even know what it all means. Mostly we are focused on learning what we need to take care of our son, for as long as we have him. We trust God and know that Sam is God’s beloved child and has been entrusted to our care. We are grateful for good doctors, a great school and a loving congregation. We appreciate all the support and encouragement of the people of First Lutheran. When you ask, ‘How’s Sam?” I always want to say, “He’s fine,” even though that’s not entirely true. But we are ‘hanging in there.’ Keep those prayers coming!

Peel House Campaign Update Tad Goodenbour

We are heading down the homestretch on the Peel House

Capital Campaign. The dinner last Thursday night at the Doubletree World Arena was just a wonderful evening. Deacon Joan and the choir were magnificent as usual. The former residents of the Jewett/Giddings/Parish/Peel House provided us with some never-before-known history of the Peel House as well. Thank you to all who attended.

For those that were not at the dinner, I wanted to share what I talked about at the dinner regarding the $1 million gift that has been pledged by an anonymous family. First, this is true philanthropy. They have committed 1/3rd of the campaign goal and request no mention, no publicity, nothing……. nothing except that their gift be used as leverage to help meet the $3.1 million goal. In this context, leverage means providing inspiration to all members to give at a level that we may not otherwise have done. That inspiration can come in two forms, transactional and spiritual. Transactional is where you give because you are getting something in return. Spiritual is where you give because God has moved you to give. Two forms of inspiration, same result and both difficult to objectively measure but neither of which would have occurred absent their gift.

All members should have received a proposal letter with a commitment amount you are asked to prayerfully consider. Please know that whatever amount you decide is accepted with gratitude and thanks. It is the anonymous donors’ objective that our campaign goal be reached with the participation of all members, and if the inspiration to a member is the prospect of a match, or it is the spiritual reward of knowing he or she did all that they could and more, then their lead gift will have achieved the purpose they desired. We thank them again for this gift and the inspiration and challenge that it provides.

Just a reminder, the Statement of Intent that you received to memorialize your Peel House Capital Campaign commitment can be returned to Services on Saturday November 16th and Sunday November 17th. We will have volunteers that will visit and collect unreturned Statements of Intent on the afternoon of the 17th. If you would like to make other arrangements, please contact Teri at the Church prior to Friday the 15th. I look forward to celebrating with you on Celebration Sunday, December 8th.

Book Discussion Group

Selection to read: Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery; the classic coming-of-age tale of Anne Shirley, originally published in 1908. It is a sentimental and charming story we’ve probably all read when we were much, much younger. Set in the fictional Canadian town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, this story of a spirited and unconventional little girl will win your heart and make you smile. Book selections for next year to be determined.

Come to Bethlehem Children’s Christmas Program

Everyone in preschool – 5th grade is encouraged to attend. Bring a new, unwrapped toy to be donated to Christmas Unlimited. There is a mandatory dress rehearsal on Sat., Dec. 7 from 9 – 11:15 am. Preschoolers will need to bring a clean, white t-shirt that hangs to their knees.
