PRAYER OF CONFESSION Rev. Todd Atkins-Whitley God of the wind and the sea, You invite us to be brave, but we are more familiar with fear. You invite us to trust you, but we’d rather trust wind and gravity. You invite us to believe in ourselves, but we have never been good at that. You invite us to move—to change and take a risk— But we stay planted where we are, afraid of the ways growth might hurt. Forgive us for our self-doubt and fear. We believe, despite our unbelief. Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE One: Peace be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us greet one another with waves and smiles

and pass the peace of Christ using the chat feature.

OPENING HYMN My Hope is Built on Nothing Less (See page 4.)

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 14:22–33 Luke Ruhlin

TIME WITH CHILDREN Pastor Todd & Marty

    SERMON Pastor Eric

ANTHEM Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) Joel Houston, Matt Crocker Gabrielle Goozée-Nichols, vocals & Salomon Lighthelm

You call me out upon the waters The great unknown where feet may fail And there I find You in the mystery In oceans deep My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name And keep my eyes above the waves When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters Your sovereign hand Will be my guide Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me You've never failed and You won't start now

So I will call upon Your name And keep my eyes above the waves When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders Let me walk upon the waters Wherever You would call me Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander And my faith will be made stronger In the presence of my Savior

I will call upon Your name Keep my eyes above the waves My soul will rest in Your embrace I am Yours and You are mine

TIME OF PRAYER Pastor Todd Sharing our Joys and Concerns (Email your requests to Pastor Eric or type them in the chat window.)

    All: Hear our prayer

Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer (using these words or the words most familiar to you)

Our Loving God, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

During this time of virtual worship, we invite you to give online: http://bit.ly/donatetodcc. Offertory Faithful Todd Beaney

    BENEDICTION Pastor Eric

POSTLUDE He Walked on Water Clifton Davis

This summer, we will dive deep into this topic Unraveled: Seeking God When Our Plans Fall Apart. We will explore nine different stories found in scripture about unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations. These are stories where God meets us in the unraveling—the loss of control—and creates something new. We hope you will join us this summer.

    Announcements

If you would like to submit a prayer concern or joy for next Sunday’s Zoom Worship, please email it to Pastor Eric at [email protected].

To keep up-to-date on news and announcements during this time of social distancing, please read your email from DCC thoroughly! All communication related to church news and events will be communicated via email!

Visitor Info Session: Thursday, July 30 On Thursday, July 30, at 7:00 p.m. DCC will host a virtual “Visitor Information Session” via Zoom for anyone who is new to the church and interested in learning more about the DCC community and membership at DCC. Within the DCC community, we have three groups of people that make up our community • visitors • friends of DCC (regular attendees) • members The difference between those who are friends of DCC and members can be summed up in one word: commitment. In our individual lives, we commit ourselves to a lease or

mortgage; we commit to complete a training program; we commit to a lifelong partner; we commit to a contract. Membership is a commitment to God’s local church.

If you consider yourself a “visitor” or “friend of DCC” and are interested in learning more about membership, we hope you’ll join us. If you attended the visitor information session back in March before shelter-in-place, and would like to attend this session, you are invited too! We hope to have a joining ceremony to welcome new members during one of our upcoming virtual worship services later in August! Please RSVP to Karen Kawaguchi and Joyce Klassen, our Community Life Co-Commissioners.

Compassion Camp Wednesdays through August 5, 10:30am–11:30am

This past week we started our first week of Compassion Camp! Open to kids incoming Kindergarten through grade 5, Compassion Camp will help us explore what it means to have compassion for others, ourselves, and the world. The theme of the first week was “At the Table” looking at one of Jesus’ stories found in Luke 15:11-35. Remaining weeks include:

    • July 15—To the Neighbor: Mark 2:1-12 • July 22—For Myself: Mark 12:28-31 and Deuteronomy 6 • July 29—Along the Way: Ruth 1:1-22 • August 5—With the World: Leviticus 25

Kids can join any of the weeks that fit their/your schedule. Click here to register or email Pastor Todd to receive the Zoom link.

Parents and youth should also check their email for information about upcoming hikes this month with Pastor T!

Ingathering Sundays – Feeding the Hungry The Outreach Commission has decided that the best way for us to continue our Ingathering tradition on the 3rd Sunday of each month, when we would ask our children to bring our canned and packaged food offerings forward to the front of the church, is to invite our worshipers to make a virtual food offering online. For Ingathering Sundays from April through June, those offerings were designated for the Food Banks that serve Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. But now we will start to spread it around to other organizations who are feeding the hungry. We have chosen Sister Parish as the Ingathering recipient for July, White Pony Express for August and Loaves & Fishes of Contra Costa for September. We will continue spreading the food around in this way until we are able to worship together in person once again. On Sunday, July 19, our Ingathering offerings will go to provided much-needed food relief for our Sister community in San Antonio, Quiche, Guatemala. Our goal is to raise $2,000 for this purpose. Pedro and the other community members were originally reluctant to accept donations of money. However, they've now decided that the need is great enough for them to accept a donation of money from DCC with which they will begin to check in on the elders in the community who are shut-ins to provide some much-needed basic food supplies. With any remaining funds, the San Antonio Sister Parish committee will work with the community to decide how to use the funds, with a focus on creating a renewable and sustainable food source within the community.

Summer Backpack and School Supplies Drive It’s time for our annual Summer Backpack and School Supplies Drive to provide new backpacks stuffed with school supplies for children of homeless, formerly-homeless and at-risk families now living in Hope Solutions (formerly Contra Costa Interfaith Housing) and Shelter, Inc. facilities who we want to help get a good start in school this year. We don’t know when they will physically be returning to school, but we want them to be ready when they do. With our need to continue to shelter in place as much as possible, we are offering options requiring less shopping than in past years.

Hope Solutions invites us to select and purchase complete backpack kits, including a standard selection of school supplies, with Preschool kits @ $20, Elementary School kits @

$30, and Middle/High School kits @ $40. The assembled backpacks with school supplies will be delivered directly to Hope Solutions. Shop and purchase online by July 27th at Hope Solutions 2020 Backpack Drive web page.

Shelter, Inc. is asking for donations of new back-to-school backpacks – all sizes, from preschool through high school – and separate school supplies of your choice. You can just give a backpack or backpacks or just give some school supplies, or both, it’s your choice. Shelter, Inc. will fill the backpacks with the appropriate school supplies. You or your children probably already know what school supplies are most in demand, but if you need help you can find a long list on the Shelter, Inc. 2020 Back-to-School Drive web page. Shelter, Inc. wants all donations delivered to their office in Concord by Friday, July 24, so the Outreach Commission will be collecting donations for Shelter, Inc.’s drive at DCC on Friday, July 24 from 9 until 11 am, for same-day delivery to Shelter, Inc.

Shelter, Inc. is also asking for $50 gift cards (Target or Kohl’s) for back-to-school uniforms and shoes. Please mail gift cards to Shelter, Inc., P.O. Box 5368, Concord, CA 94520 or bring them to DCC for the backpack and school supplies collection on July 24, 9-11 am.

If you have questions, or want to report your participation in DCC’s back-to-school backpack project, please email Doug Leich.

    Youth Group Summer Clothing Drive

As we find ourselves still sheltered-in-place, Youth Group 8th grader Luci Beaver is organizing a summer clothing drive. She writes:

Hi! We are collecting clothes, shoes, jackets, and possibly books. Please make sure the y are all in good condition, clean, and folded. We are on the lookout for good organizations to give things to during this pandemic and we already have some in mind.

Once we determine the best organizations to give to, we will be in touch with more information about drop-off and where to bring it to. In the meantime, please collect some of the things below that you would like to give:

    • shoes • clothes • jackets • possibly books

Please, again a reminder, have the items clean, folded, and in good condition. Please make sure everything is ready to donate—we will not be going through clothes.

If you have any questions about participating in this opportunity to exhibit DCC’s hallmarks of generosity and hospitality, you can reach Luci through her mother, Laura at [email protected].

How do you create a new habit? They say it takes 21-days of practice to create a new habit.

As we undergo learning to be anti-racist individuals and an anti-racist church, we invite you to consider the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County’s 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge.

Simply choose one of these challenges and give it a chance!

    • America & Moore: Diversity Education, Research & Consulting (three slightly different 21-day plans to choose from)

    • 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge© by Debby Irving: Racial Justice Educator and Writer

    • Michigan League for Public Policy (includes information on Midwest First Nations intersectionalities)

Folks who began their challenge on July 1 or anyone who starts this now or who has done some personal or group study to get to know their own privilege is invited to an online program called Cultural Mindfulness: An Interfaith Gathering to Explore Racial Justice, Cultural Competency, and Continue Our Work to be held on Wednesday, July 22 at 7 pm on Zoom or Facebook Live. (More information soon.)

You can read more information on this initiative here.
