The Ssscoop Issue 2 Summer 8 December 2016 Our National qualifiers We have not one, not two, not three but four swimmers who have achieved National qualifying times. Ellie Fry and Sean Beck produced outstanding swims in the Open Water State Championships at Champion Lakes on Sunday 20 November. In the space of 8 days Lennard Booth achieved national times in the 100 Fly, 200 Breast and 200IM. Joshua Spencer produced a National time in the 200 Backstroke at Qualifying Meet 2 on Sunday. His time of 218.85 is almost three seconds faster than the qualifying time of 221.60. Also on the weekend, Sean Beck swam a 13 year old National time for the 200 Fly – he will be 14 by Nationals in April so will be looking to improve on his time at States. Well done to these amazing swimmers and Coach Chris! Coach’s report We are very proud that our swimming program has been steadily increasing in numbers. This has resulted in LeisureFit Competition Swim recently been allocated additional lane space. This has meant we can open some new sessions for some of our squads. Keep your eyes on the email to be sure to secure a spot in any new sessions. Some exciting times have been swum over the last few weeks as the Senior squads lead into Senior (12&O) State Championships on the 19th-22nd December. Twenty seven swimmers have swum senior state qualifying times including some swimmers recently achieving their National times for next year. As we congratulate them, we should not lose sight that the biggest meet for them is less than two weeks away and wish them and the club all the best for States. We also need to mindful of the other 120 swimmers in the program that are continuing to improve their skills and achieve their swimming goals. Big thanks to Shannon and Calum who have been working additional hours to help keep all the squads on track during this busy time. We have 47 swimmers participating in the Summer League final on Sunday and we look forward to putting the best foot forward for the club. Scream for your team and have a great fun meet. Chris

Additional coaching support As you have witnessed in recent months our program has grown from strength to strength in both participation and performance. This is not surprising as we are gifted with great facilities, qualified coaching staff and a very supportive and active committee and volunteers. It is our intention at South Shore to provide our swimmers with the very best opportunities to enable them to realise their full potential in and out of the pool. With this in mind, when the needs arise, we will be bringing more coaching staff into our program to ensure that all the swimmers are receiving adequate support and instruction. Very soon you will be seeing Calum Macgregor on deck assisting Chris with some of his sessions. Calum is an ex international Great Britain swimmer who has ten years of swimming coaching experience from novice to the elite level. In recent times, he has held the position of Head Coach at Tuart Hill and Kwinana where he significantly increased membership and participation. We are very fortunate to have Calum assisting with the program and using his knowledge and experience to help our swimmers, coaches and program reach even higher levels of success and participation. We ask you to support Chris, Shannon and Calum as they work together on pool deck. Club night Friday 16 December There will be no Club Night next Monday. Our next Club Night 8 – Christmas Club Night – is next Friday, 16 December at 6pm followed by the usual sausage sizzle. The program is:

Visit from Brett Slocombe The Performance Squad was lucky enough to have a visit on Thursday morning from Brett Slocombe. Brett was one of the two Sports Physios on the Australian Swimming Team who travelled to Rio this year. Brett was also a Sports Physio on the Australian Sprint Kayak team in London 2012 and again on the Australian Swimming Team at Beijing 2008. He has been one of the WAIS Sports Physios for more than a decade and he has worked with most of WA’s top swimmers over the years including Eamon Sullivan, Blair Evans, Tommy Sucipto, and others. Brett gave a presentation on his experiences as a Physio on the Australian Swimming Team, followed by a workshop on how to activate for training and competitions. South Shore hopes to continue to build on our relationship with Brett and his team to ensure our swimmers have the best possible support to achieve their goals. Thanks to the coaches for arranging Brett's session.
