We would like to cordially invite all the fathers and sons of our parishes to a Father and Son Banquet. You will be served a delicious home cooked meal and we have a magician that is sure to entertain both young and old. We will have prizes for the kids and our magician can make balloon animals, hats, shields, etc. We will also have prizes for the dad with the most kids, oldest dad, youngest son, dad who traveled the farthest, and godfather with the most godchildren. I promise you, it will be a wonderful evening. Invite your dad, sons, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and godchildren to join you.
If your dad or sons live too far away to join us, we will adopt you for the evening so don't let that hinder you from joining us. A free-will donation will be accepted.
There will be more information to follow in the coming weeks. Please join us and help us establish this as an annual event.

St. Augustine & Holy Family’s Operation Olive Branch
Luke 10: 1-2 Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.
You are one of the laborers called
by God for this harvest.
What better way to answer the call to spread the good News of Jesus Christ?

“A LIFE-CHANGING
EXPERIENCE FOR
COUPLES”
HOW DO COUPLES WHO CAN
PRAY TOGETHER GET THAT WAY? Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s “Couple Prayer Series” for married or engaged couples begins Friday, Feb 12. Experience first-hand why couples who not only attend church together weekly, but who also pray together daily, have a divorce rate of less than 1 in every 1000 marriages. For registration information, please call the OLMC rectory @ 810-384-1338 or visit the OLMC Parish Office. As one young couple said, “This was awesome. To come to God together as a couple surpassed any
expectations we had.”
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Each year from January 18-25, many Christian denominations will celebrate a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This week used to be called Christian Unity Octave. The word "octave," meaning eight days, denotes a Christian week. Since the early part of the last century, the week has been taken up by many Christians the world over. It is a week in which we all pray for unity of not only our faith and works, but furthermore a week to pray that we all may be one in our solidarity. This year's theme will be "Called to Proclaim the Mighty Acts of the Lord" (cf. 1 Pt 2:9). How might your parish celebrate this important week? After all, we are praying for unity, which is what Jesus wanted. Perhaps you might invite another denomination's minister to come on a Sunday morning and offer a reflection after Communion about what the churches in your community are doing to help those on the fringes of society. Or invite all the churches in your community to a joint prayer service and potluck meal. Start small if you have never done something like this and then plan to make a gathering like this a yearly celebration. For more information about this week, visit www.geii.org.
3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
"So that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received." St. Luke began his Gospel by explaining why he wrote it. His intention was to provide a written account "of the events that have been fulfilled among us." But he didn't write simply to make a historical record; he wrote in order to bolster the confidence of the Christian community. He wanted to offer them a resource for realizing that what they had been taught was legitimate. This is why he investigated "everything accurately anew" and wrote it down "in an orderly sequence." This passage helps us understand the relationship between sacred tradition and sacred Scripture. As Catholics, we believe that the Bible is an essential part of divine revelation that goes hand in hand with the teachings that were established by Jesus and passed on by his apostles. The "Catechism of the Catholic Church" tells us that the church "does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence" (#82). Here, Luke emphasizes that what he writes is a confirmation of what was already being taught. This fact should help us appreciate the gift of the Bible. This inspired collection of books exists to help us practice our faith and to bring us into a deeper understanding of the revealed word of God. Although the Bible is not the only source of revelation, it does help us to have what Luke calls "certainty" regarding our faith. We do hear Bible readings at Mass, but we would do well to read the Bible on our own as well. Let us not miss the opportunity to hear God's word speaking to us every day.

Fish Frys are a major Parish Fundraiser
and assist with various operating
expenses.
We know that there never seems to be
enough hours in a day and that
volunteering often seems to be a
challenge to our time. However, we
would ask you to prayerfully consider
helping at one of the Fish Frys this year.
Since being moved to the Life Center, the
number of meals we serve has increased
and we need help for the Fish Frys to be
successful.
There will be a board in the back of
church where you can sign up to help or
call Melanie Loper at 810-310-1991. If
you are unable to meet your commitment,
we ask that you notify Melanie at the number above.
We thank you in advance for serving
your parish in this capacity. Remember,
the more hands the lighter the load.
God bless you
and God bless your Lenten Journey.

| Precious Blessings |
In Kindergarten we do a lot of counting. We count by ones, tens, fives, and twos. We count how many people want what kind of milk. We count objects and dots and match sets to number cards. We count on graphs and we count the days that we have come to school. My favorite counting, however, is our daily counting of our blessings. We count our days using arrows. On each arrow we write the number day it is, and then we take turns adding a blessing. In the beginning the kids are unsure of what a blessing is, so we talk about how blessings are gifts from God and they can be anything we are grateful for. Initially the children are unsure and we have a lot of repeat blessings, but as the year progresses the children begin to come up with their own special blessings – things that mean something to them. Our blessings have included family members, pets, special people in their lives, their favorite food, and God. I love to watch their little faces as they ponder what their blessing will be. They know that this is a special time and they will have to wait 13 more days until they can give another blessing, so they really think about it. What’s even more precious is after someone has given a blessing the rest of the class will comment on how sweet or nice that blessing is. Listening to the blessings of five and six year olds is a blessing in itself, because it allows me to stop and think about life in a much simpler way and to appreciate all the Lord has given me. And when I count my blessings St. Augustine School is among them. I attended this school for two years before going to Holy Cross High School. My siblings all graduated from here and my three children are graduates of St. A’s. I have been blessed to work here for many years. It is a second family to me – a second home for my children. I know how blessed my husband and I are that we were able to send our children through this school and on to Cardinal Mooney. It wasn’t easy, but it was a sacrifice we would make again in a heartbeat. Being able to live our faith and talk about God’s blessings each day is a gift. Thank you to all of you for supporting our school and giving us this gift. This Sunday we kick off our annual celebration of being a Catholic school. Please join us for breakfast and then take a walk through your school, because without you we couldn’t do what we do. And please know that we count all of you among our blessings!

St. Augustine Usher Ministry Needs Your Help
A great way to grow spiritually is to volunteer for a Parish ministry. One such ministry is being an Usher. The Usher Ministry plays a vital role in enhancing the worship experience during Mass. Ushers greet worshipers as they enter church, assists and directs worshipers during Mass, and they tidy up the church after Mass.
St. Augustine is in critical need of Ushers at all of the Masses. All would be welcome to the Usher Ministry. Your commitment would generally be one Mass per month.
