LESSON 1A

The First Paragraph in the Bible

• 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

• 1:2 Now the earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. 1:3 God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light!

The Last Paragraph of the Bible• 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things

for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!”

• 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say: “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge.

• 22:18 I testify to the one who hears the words of the prophecy contained in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 22:19 And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.

A WARNING AGAINST FALSE SPIRITS: ACTS 16

• 14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul. 15 And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. 16 It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, “These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” 18 She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment. 19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized (Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities, 20 and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews, 21 and are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”

• adopted belief in a third experience—the "baptism with the Holy Ghost and fire.“

• As early as 1891, Parham claimed that glossolalia—speaking in unknown or foreign tongues—should accompany this baptism in the Holy Spirit.

• Speaking in tongues was the initial evidence of "the baptism of the Holy Spirit.“

• He viewed himself as the "projector" of the Apostolic Faith (also called Pentecostal or Latter Rain) movement, though he opposed officially organizing the group

1901 TOPEKA KANSAS

• Revival at Bethel college and seminary.

• Presence of HS was indicated by physical healers.

• Tongues is the physical manifestation of baptism of the Holy Spirit.

1906, Azusa Street , Los Angeles

• "I sat on the platform in Azusa Street Mission, and saw the manifestations of the flesh, spiritualistic controls, [and] saw people practicing hypnotism at the altar over candidates seeking the baptism.“

• There were no hymnals, no liturgy, no order of services. Most of the time there were no musical instruments. But around the room, men jumped and shouted. Women danced and sang. People sang sometimes together, yet with completely different syllables, rhythms, and melodies.

• At various places, some would be "slain under the power of God" or entranced.

2. Charismatics

• Around the middle of the 20th century, Pentecostal-like experience broke out among members of many other Christian churches, eventually including Roman Catholicism.

1994, TORONTO BLESSING

• The Toronto Blessing has become known for ecstatic worship, what is termed as being slain in the Spirit, laughter, crying, healing from emotional wounds, and healing of damaged relationships.

• "Holy laughter" as a result of overwhelming joy was a hallmark manifestation, and there were also minor instances of participants roaring like lions. 0]

• More than 300 of the visitors testified that they supernaturally received gold or silver fillings in their teeth during the meetings

TORONTO BLESSING REACTIONS

• The laughter portion of these meetings was endorsed by Benny Hinn, Oral Roberts and Pat Robertson

• In his book, Counterfeit Revival, Hank Hanegraaffclaims that the revival has done more damage than good, and that the Toronto blessing was a matter of people being enslaved into altered states of consciousness where they obscure reality and enshrine absurdity. Hank Hanegraaf also stated in a 1996 Washington Post interview that "It's nice to feel all these things, but the fact is, these feelings will wear off, and then disappointment steps in. I call it post-Holy Laughter depression syndrome."
